Passover and Easter Saturday! Thread before the Gardening Thread

passover-seder-elijah.jpg

What were our observant Jewish friends doing last night?

I am assuming that all the firstborn among them made it through the night.

Happy Passover or Easter Saturday!

Things are crazy out there. I thought that for a little while, we might try getting away from the immediate with some old stuff - stories, quotes and music that remind us that the current craziness does not represent the total sum of existence. Except for this. The brain trust takes Elon Musk to the movies.

Now, back to more timeless themes. Starting with the Jews and Passover. Here's Dennis Prager, explaining in a short video the meaning of the statement below:

prager 10.jpg

* * * * *

I have had a hard time finding Passover music that I understand. But I get this. Don't give up too soon. I know they're kind of nerd-ish. But they don't need Auto-Tune.

Here's a different thought: Were there Jews who had something in common with Lot's wife? Jews who didn't leave Egypt?

his weekend, millions of people will sit around Seder tables and memorialize the exodus of the Jews from Egypt.

Guided by the Haggadah, or Passover text--one of the most popular Jewish books ever written--Seder participants are led along in a series of prayers, texts, and activities. We talk and talk and talk about the miracle of liberation; we parse the details of its unfolding, enumerating the many miracles involved; we go over whether we are supposed to commemorate the blessing of freedom only in this life or also in the next one; we assert in words and song the gratitude we feel for being the lucky descendants of those who escaped from slavery.

One thing we do not generally discuss, however, are the Jews who didn't leave.

"Now when Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although it was nearer; for God said, 'The people may have a change of heart when they see war, and return to Egypt,'" states Exodus 13:17. But it is in the next sentence that a mystery emerges: "So God led the people round about, by way of the wilderness at the Sea of Reeds. Now the Israelites went up chamushim out of the land of Egypt."

Wait--what? The Jews went out of Egypt how? What does "chamushim" mean? It is generally translated as "armed," but nearly all commentaries note that its definition is, in fact, uncertain.

Into this breach arrives the legendary medieval Torah commentator Rashi, with a startling assertion. After acknowledging the "armed" option, Rashi offers, with casual sangfroid, another idea: That "chamushim" relates to the Hebrew word for five, and the text should be understood to be saying that only one-fifth of the Jewish people chose to leave Egypt. . .

This interpretation did not sit well with some scholars . . .

But Shemot Rabbah finds Rashi's explanation perfectly reasonable, and even adds to it: "There were sinners among the Jews who had Egyptian patrons, and they had wealth and honor there, [so] they didn't want to leave." In other words, they liked the good life in Egypt.

This, of course, flies in the face of what is commonly understood to be the definition of slavery. Jews who stayed behind were not inexplicably choosing a life of torture; they simply did not want to give up on the comforts of the life they knew. In the later words of Rav Yehuda Henkin, they were "disinclined to trade flesh-pots for freedom."

I've been thinking a lot about these Jews lately.

I think about them when people refuse to accept that beloved blue-chip organizations--the ACLU, the ADL, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International--no longer fight for their own founding values. . . .

Read the whole thing. What do you think?

A Christian Redemption Story for Easter

From Angola Prison. A good storyteller makes a difference.

"The Farm"

The first time I saw the inside of a prison was in 1999; I was 16. I hadn't knocked over a fruit stand or been caught stealing hubcaps, I was just an unsuspecting teenager playing piano for a Louisiana gospel group.

One Wednesday evening in October, my pastor and leader of the band gathered us up after prayer meeting and told us we had been invited to come sing at Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary. We were all wide-eyed and slack-jawed."

The Farm," as it was known to most, had a long reputation of being not only the largest, but also the bloodiest prison in America. For those of us who had grown up hearing stories, this was like bein invited to sing in the Roman Colosseum with ribeyes tied around our necks. . .

G.K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936)

An unusual, kind of quirky man who had an impact on how a lot of Christians think. He did radio programs for the BBC. His wife and secretary accompanied him, which likely helped him avoid getting lost on the way to the radio station.

Reminder: Save those physical classic books!

* * * * *

GKC Quotes:

Every great literature has always been allegorical, allegorical of some view of the whole universe. The Iliad is only great because all life is a battle, the Odyssey because all life is a journey, the Book of Job because all life is a riddle.

* * * * *

Modern people, especially urban people, think that anything which has got itself printed has somehow passed an examination and received a diploma; has somehow, in fact, shown itself to be true.

* * * * *

The whole point of the Christian theory is that pain is so real that even God Himself could experience it.

* * * * *

The whole secret of mysticism is this: that man can understand everything by the help of what he does not understand. The morbid logician seeks to make everything lucid, and succeeds in making everything mysterious. The mystic allows one thing to be mysterious, and everything else becomes lucid.

Part of a longer quote.

* * * * *

To love anything is to love its boundaries.

* * * * *

So far from it being self-evident to the modern mind that men are created equal, it is not self-evident that men are created, or even that men are men.

* * * * *

The fairy tales said that the prince and princess lived happily ever afterwards: and so they did. They lived happily, although it is very likely that from time to time they threw the furniture at each other.

Repeating some great Easter music

BBC had some music suggestions. Here's one:

Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov: Russian Easter Festival Overture

This 1888 overture is named for the Svetliy prazdnik or 'Bright holiday', as Easter is known in Russia.

An avowed atheist, Rimsky-Korsakov wrote that he wanted to capture 'the transition from the solemnity and mystery of the evening of Passion Saturday to the unbridled pagan-religious celebrations of Easter Sunday morning'. The piece paints vividly the explosion of light and colour at the end of a long, hard Russian winter.

Religious and pagan themes are entwined at the very heart of the work: Rimsky-Korsakov borrowed themes from the Obikhod, a collection of Orthodox chants that since 1848 had been a mandatory part of the liturgy for every church in Russia.

These austere motifs shine through the wild textures of the orchestra, no more so than at 8'35 when a solo tenor trombone ('a piena voce') evokes the chanting of a priest.

Well, in the secular world of the US, we celebrate the Declaration Of Independence. Similar principles, devinely guided, and if we ain't progressives we consider ourselves "the lucky descendants".

I still believe that, in spite of evidence to the contrary.

26 We had a nice Seder and this year no leftovers (hooray), growing grandsons are a good thing, and I don't even have tsimmes left over. I am pleased. I always laugh to myself during the part of the Seder that says "today we are slaves" which is read with not one iota of tongue in cheek by people who will later bemoan the idea that AAs can't get past their slave history. I'm surprised they don't write their own Haggadahs.

54 I could accept that interpretation of "chamushin"; a recurring theme of the Prophets is that only a Remnant will be saved, often taken to mean a tenth. When Elijah has defeated the prophets of Baal, he laments that he is the only one left Faithful, and yet the voice tells him "no; there are still 7,000 who have not bowed their knee to Baal." (1 Kings 19:1

It's a constantly recurring story; the majority falls away and does what they will, but a small minority stays faithful and is saved.

63 NYT publishes Op-ed saying to give up God.

This is unbelievably easy to see through. The NYT isn't saying give up on faith. Oh Hell no, their entire readership is very much faith driven.

The NYT observes only one commandment. "Do as thou will"

Not even close. The typical NYT reader is driven by strict observance of a behavioral code. The code just doesn't make any rational sense, and it's not written down. But, just like baseball except for much, much higher stakes, their is a vast unwritten rule-book all the same. Violate that one, and you'll get plunked just as hard as any up and in fastball, by your assumed own team no less.

This is obvious. The NYT op-ed is just doing the same old song and dance, another nibble at the edges. They can't get you to accept their god until you give up your god. That's all their is to it.

75 Abram was born in Ur of the Chaldees. You can Google map it.
Posted by: Roy at April 16, 2022 11:45 AM (Ti+Tv)

Fun fact, there has always been some controversy over which ancient "Ur" that was. Although it is most commonly said to be the famous ancient city of Ur in Southern Iraq, there is also a city in southern Turkey now named Sanliurfa, which for over 2,000 years has claimed to be the original Ur-Kasidim (Ur of the Chaldees) There are also several other ancient sites in the general area which may have been named Ur.

What's interesting about them is that 2 generations later, when Jacob is sent to find a wife from among his father's kinsman, this appears to be the area that he travels to. Not 1,000 miles away to southern Iraq.

97 "That "chamushim" relates to the Hebrew word for five, and the text should be understood to be saying that only one-fifth of the Jewish people chose to leave Egypt"

Another recurring word/theme of interest is "remnant". It seems people are constantly failing (as they become institutions, especially), but God manages to "reserve" a few, even if they are hidden in caves.

"Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him." I Kings 19

Noah was perhaps the prototype of a small remnant, obeying God as the world turned evil. Moses came down from the mount and the people had already made a golden calf to worship ... seems like a trend.

Same when Jesus came for Israel, the people mostly accepted him, but the "organized church" would not let go of their power, and had fully sold out. imo most institutional churches have the same problem today, too big, too centralized in distant locations.

There is indeed power in numbers ... One fifth of early America perhaps led the American Revolution, so maybe a faithful fifth of devoted/involved Americans can defeat the current Evil Empire in DC?

I'm positive that at least the rank and file, as in the folks around you and me every day that spew this shit, are not satanists. Why do I say that ?

Because an actual evil deity, I'm sure, would at the minimum coordinate his cannon fodder on at least a couple common points, to control them if nothing else. Yet two minutes spent with any of these tools, where you actually hit them with hard questions and stomp them down when they go on their immediate "shriek at any personal resistance" gambit shows that they don't even agree with each other.

I don't think any over-arching entity organizes them, because they aren't under any kind of control. They're not even anarchists. They're just over eighteen children living in a world where they have no real resistance.

Their god is godless, moral anarchy. And that is a powerful contagion. People might dislike how often I bring up the "sociology=theology" posters and statements by my former rabbi, but how else does he justify CRT, LGTBQ, and abortion? All of these and the quite frankly, paganism, taught by his ilk, are serious tenets of their new theology. I suppose Auslander is one of them.

I do, however, recognize that living in a very exclusive community and looking Amish level "different" does not appeal to everyone. Among my patients were a few escapees from Monsey and Lakewood. Most just live their new lives and do not go apeshit with hatred.

Russian Easter Overture was my gateway drug to classical music when I was yet a mere lad. To this day decades later, the Russian and Eastern European composers of the 19th century are my favorites: Smetana, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak.

And that scene from Martin Call is one of my all-time favorite movie scenes in any genre. It really nails how that fictional trading firm, which totally is not supposed to be Goldman, in a day changed the housing mania into the subprime mortgage crisis.

How people react to that question tells me all I care to know. There are visceral reactions, from certain groups of Democrat and Republican voters, at the very mention of the Citizen ignoring, let only willingly disobeying, the State.

Full disclosure, I'm not religious in the slightest. I also believe "religion is the opiate of the masses". The thing is, I believe the masses need opiated on on something, and Western Christianity is a better drug than Socialism or Communism. You might say I'm mildly pro-religious, although I don't personally partake.

One of my suspicions of religion, especially organized religion, is the unquestioning agreement with every tenant - top to bottom - as evangelized by it's spokesman. I can't find any one person whom I completely agree with on anything. How could I ? I constantly examine, critique, and make minor revisions to my own.

I don't trust anyone who can spout 100% agreement on any philosophy. I don't know why you would be surprised when one that can do such spouting suddenly spouts something different. They're a mouthpiece. Nothing more.

In that light, perhaps it would be clarifying to understand that satanists aren't so much encouraged to worship satan, I realize that's counter intuitive, as to worship *themselves* (i.e. each one's highest holy day is their own birthday) which probably doesn't take much encouragement.

It might as well be. We'd have to tear down at least half of the existing Federal structure if we went back to interpreting the documents as written. And it's not like they're a mystery. I'm convinced the Founders all died with carpal tunnel, and probably wrote down thoughts while they were in the out-house.

And yes, there are several nuggets inside those documents that I would have never ratified. I'm an anti-Federalist to the core.

Saw an announcement in the local weekly paper for a foreclosure auction. All of the property dimensions were listed in "vara" units, i.e. northern boundary is 47.25 vara long. Had to look that one up.

It's a carry over from when Texas and the rest of the US Southwest was owned by Mexico and is 32.9682 inches in length. I assume the property deed had the measurements in vara and they had to list it that way because that's the legal definition on record.

It's winemoms and retired lefties. They get involved in their churches, get elected to leadership, then they get into the leadership of the diocese/Presbytery and then the national/international church. Once there, they make the policy for the church, and more importantly, the seminaries. After that, it's about 10 years before there is a big split in the denomination, and about 70% of the denomination splits off into a new sect, but the media will act like the remaining sect is the "mainstream" church.

256 I'm very late to this thread, in fact it may be dead.

And I haven't read most of the content. But it looks as though it's a religious theme, so I will just post a couple relevant thoughts:

Roy Schoeman is a convert from Judaism, in fact he doesn't refer to himself as a convert, but rather a post-Messianic Jew. He is now a professor of theology at a Catholic university. He posts a lot of content about Catholicism's Jewsih roots, the liturgy, the vestments, the sacraments particularly. He has some good youtubes up about Holy Week this year.

Posted by: kallisto at April 16, 2022 03:44 PM (GYsNo)

257 And regarding my own Catholic faith, and our current pope who has left us puzzled, if not irate at times:

A friend said she was worried he was going to greenlight abortion. I don't have that same fear, I'm more inclined to believe he will ok homosexual marriage in the church.
But this past week the Pope traveled to Malta and had a specific message about advocating for life in all its stages.

And I also found out he made a statement about transgenderism being "demonic".

I stopped badmouthing him some months ago when I checked myself and realized we should be praying for him, not constantly trashing him. So maybe the prayers of millions are bearing fruit.
