Fry Self Portrait.jpg

Self Portrait
Roger Fry

I have never heard of this guy, but I saw the original at The Courtaud Gallery last week and I was struck by the warmth of the colors and the odd, almost startled and puzzled expression of the artist. Unfortunately the reproductions I could find online were a pale reflection of the original. Luckily I took a crappy photo of it and you can see the difference...

Climax from "The Big Hat" (1942):
P. Marlowe: "Okay, Fry. Give it up. I know it was you.
Roger Fry: "Alright, alright, Marlowe. You got me. But, you gotta understand it wasn't me. I didn't want to kill her. My brother...Alphonse. He was the brains behind it all."
Marlowe: Loony. I shoulda known. You got no brother, Fry. Go peddle your monkey grease to someone who cares.
Small disembodied voice: Show him, Roger.
Roger Fry: Okay....okay... Just-

Posted by: Tonypete at April 13, 2022

***
The classic style does, yes! I wear mine with the forebrim snapped down like the IJ fedora. The cattleman's crease keeps the profile of the crown sort of squarish. It looks (to me) more authoritative, as though you're not apologizing for your hat, you're wearing it.

The same details of a thin ribbon edging the brim and a narrow ribbon around the base of the crown were found in the Stratoliner model, but Stetson offered the same look in other models. I have a vintage Royal Stetson that has been creased like an IJ fedora. It looks like a Strat in all but the name on the sweatband.

The images I see look like a lower-crowned version of the ten-gallon hat John Wayne wore in his early Westerns. Western hats in movies have evolved from broad-brimmed to curled and shorter-brimmed like Roy Rogers' hats and those worn in '50s-'60s TV Westerns, and now back to broader-brimmed models.

Take advantage of Obamacare since it's there . My COBRA would have been $1260 with no issues. Obamacare depends on your expected income. If it's below 13500 they will throw you to Medicaid. If it's 13500 and above the subsidy is on a sliding scale depending on your income. Your other option is an indemnity plan with a supplemental policy. That's what I did I beginning. Ran me about $500 month.

277 COBRA shouldn't depend on health issues. It's basically allowing you to continue on your former employer's plan. But you have to pay the full amount, whereas before, your employer paid for a good chunk of it. It's meant to provide a bridge until you can get new health insurance kicks in.

It's expensive, to be sure. One of the nice things is, you can do it retroactively. So if your new insurance starts in a month, you can slide until it kicks in. But if you have a medical emergency before then, you can send a payment for your COBRA benefits, and you'll be covered.

We better pass an anti-lynching bill before this shit gets out of hand. Next thing you know there will be folks wandering around Chicago in the middle of the night looking for gay black men to pour bleach on, amirite?

William Walker. "Filibustering" in an older sense, it was a thing for a while before the Civil War. Nicaragua was the shortcut cargo used before the Panama Canal (there was an actual canal attempted at one point). It's all a pretty crazy period of history, basically forgotten here (but very much NOT forgotten there).

338 Art story: I have a friend who has a Leroy Neiman original sports painting. It is a picture of Randy Matson doing a shot put at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Neiman painted this live on the TV broadcast of those Oympics. I remember watching him do the painting on TV. My friend's late husband was at the Olympics, and having studied fine art, talked to the artist about his work. Neiman enjoyed what he had to say so much he gave my him the painting. My widow friend had no idea how valuable that painting was until I showed her that Neiman sports paintings have sold for more than a million dollars. I would guess that signed painting is worth at least $100,000.

343 Thank you for posting this. The Courtauld Galley in London is our favorite art museum. It has great paintings from the impressionists (many very familiar ones) and from other times that Mr. Courtauld liked. He ran a major chemical company and often used his money to buy paintings that were not yet popular.
One especially nice thing about the Gallery is that it is not crowded. You can stand near a painting and look at it without other people pushing you aside. I have a picture of me standing next to Van Gogh with his ear bandaged.

If YOU are an artist does your self portrait match what YOU think you look like?
Or what you really do to others?
Back before photos Royalty and Nobles would commission portraits of their potential arranged marriage prospects...romantic "Love" wasn't even a consideration. Even among the merchant classes. Class married class, Guild married Guild.
"Betrothed" might never even meet until they met at the border enroute to the wedding(where the wife to be had to strip, remove all old clothes and be garbed in "Local" stuffs)
How many of those Portraits used some "Artistic License" to guild the Lilly's?"
