First World Problems [Joe Mannix]

Annoying Restrictions

I like listening to white noise to help me fall asleep. I have found that the sound of rainfall, waterfalls, the forest at night, etc. all help me fall asleep quickly and wake up rested. There are machines that play these sounds, but those seem silly when we live in a world where YouTube is a thing and I have a TV set in my room. There are limitless options for this on that platform, with thousands of hours-long videos that just play these sounds set to a static, black image (essentially, no video).

There is a problem with this, though. When the TV is on, it isn't actually dark. Even if you crank the set's backlight all the way down, it still not fully dark. Beyond this, using your TV set this way will also wear it out a lot faster. Backlights do not have an eternal lifespan. It would be far better to be able to just turn off the screen while leaving the set itself on and working.

Well, it turns out, I can! Sort of. I discovered an option in the menu on my TV that allows me to turn off the display part of the set, but I couldn't find it again. I did some digging and found that the screen disable option is only present in certain music streaming apps on my smart TV. My discovery of it in a non-approved app was a bug. I figured out how to exploit that bug reliably. Mission Accomplished, and I can turn off the screen while listening to stuff that helps me sleep.

But why does it work this way? Why do I have to exploit a bug - an exploit that may vanish with a future software update - just to access a useful feature? I suspect it might be a licensing thing where maybe the app developer can choose to not expose the option, but I don't know.

What I do know, however, is that I hate arbitrary, poorly-conceived and deliberate restrictions on things that make them less useful or harder to use for no practical reason.

I play Skyrim, still, 10 years later. Its just a fun, good game, and the new mods coming out make it amazing and extend the play life incredibly.

Except... Activision bought Bethesda. And has proceeded to crap all over the company. And Microsoft bought Activision/Bethesda, so now they're doing regular updates that break the game.

And buy break the game, I mean they make nearly every mod -- the best and most creative ones -- not work any more. So that Skyrim blows up and won't load.

This should NEVER EVER HAPPEN and it is catastrophically stupid of the company to do it. The problem is that the engine is kind of limited, and brilliant coders found a way to allow the engine to do amazing new things that were never even possible back when Skyrim came out. And those are the things that they keep breaking.

36 French polling agency projections show President Emmanuel Macron and right-wing rival Marine Le Pen leading in the first round of France's presidential election.
If borne out by official results, the two will advance to a presidential runoff on April 24 with strong echoes of their last face-off in the 2017 election. The projections show Macron with a comfortable first-round lead Sunday of between 27%-to-29% support, ahead of Le Pen, who is expected to capture 23%-to-24% of the vote.
But the second round is likely to be tight.

Everything without exception should be easily back portable, of its not an upgrade. if I cannot play Heroes of Might & Magic III on your new wonder zowie operating system, then your new operating system is a downgrade.

Its not even that tough to figure out, they just don't want to do it because then people wouldn't be forced to buy new versions of their top selling software.

This is why Knights were turned into a revenue generator rather than an expense: you had to pay to maintain your status as a knight, and the entire culture was built around having lands and properties, which again kicked taxes back to the liege. Problem: knights need money and get bored without war, so they started causing local trouble, so you needed to find way to keep them entertained.

This deeply bothers me about modern tech. Its impossible to repair, beyond very simple things like "replace the cartridge". And that's on purpose but also a result of tech. I used to be able to rewire stuff when it went bad, solder parts in etc. You cannot do that with modern electronic equipment. The wires are like spiderweb, everything is packed in too closely to safely work on, and the parts are rarely available.

Its all designed to just throw away which breaks my miserly heart with all the lessons I learned on thrift and reusing things from my youth. Its like sacrilege to throw something away and buy a new one the way I was raised and taught, but that's the absolute standard today

As for the dishes, while I do clean up most times, if I'm cooking for 7 (like I do) and 7 people eat, 1 of those 7 not named me should be chomping at the bit to volunteer to clean up b/c they got the benefits of my cooking...it doesn't ever happen, but I do get helpers when I ask, so I guess I'll take the still acceptable option.

Sounds like you might end up having to call supervisor for a different way to get in tomorrow and get a new phone if you can't get this one happy. If it is not a gradual thing of the battery not holding a charge for long or having to fiddle the connection to get it to charge it may well be the software panic bug that a hard reboot will fix if it will cooperate that long.

Need transition group metal for that. Right? I've made my share of hapto-bonded metal compounds.

The recent synthesis of the benzene ring infinity compound showed the rings had local aromaticity, not extended pi-bonding. All P=pI bonding with the carbon atoms.

Yep. Funny story: a prominent chemist who held himself out as an expert on the topic of some litigation gravely intoned p-pi d-pi backbonding as his explanation for some phenomenon. In fact, the whole point of using that ligand class was that it DIDN'T exhibit any such backbonding; that's why it was chosen.

Yeah, he obviously hadn't read even the papers cited in the litigation. The sad part was, that I was only person in the courtroom who knew he was full of shit, but it was too "inside baseball" to bring up.

239 The results of the French Election were pretty much what polls predicted, surprisingly. Macron 28% (FAR from a majority) Le Pen, 23%, Melenchon (socialist) 21%, Zemmour (Le Pens biggest competition from the right) 7%. A lot of small parties making up the balance.

So the runofff will be Macron vs LePen, and the biggest question is, what will the socialists do? They are furious at Macron for a lot of the moves he has made the last couple of years.

This is why I have enjoyed reading depositions. More often than not, the attorneys don't understand their own questions, and the deposed are often full of bullshit.

It's very easy to provide the defendant attorneys with demonstrable facts which condradict 'expert' witness.

Since Bangalore is about halfway around the world, that would make it more convenient for the Americans who have to do their own jobs between 0800 and 1600, though. A first-world solution!

But you still have all the fun of 3 seconds of audio delay, 24-bits-per-second audio quality, and talking with some dude named Vishwan who insists that you call him Victor, and pronounce both D's in Wednesday.
