The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“We’re seeing a huge boom in senior homelessness. These are not necessarily people who have mental illness or substance abuse problems. They are people being pushed into the streets by rising rents."said Kendra Hendry, a caseworker at Arizona's largest shelter

Quote II

"It's going to help save lives, reduce crime and get more criminals off the streets. If you commit a crime with a ghost gun, expect federal prosecution."***Pres. Joe Biden

Shut your pie hole you addled old man. The first charges to be dropped are always the firearm charges.

*

Quote III

“And I said some things that hurt people and I feel terrible about that. The gay community has been incredible to me my entire career. And I mean my entire career, from before I got started in this town. Actor Sam Elliot

Can't venture off the rez?

*

Quote IV

“I went behind the podium to collect my fifth place trophy and they kind of blatantly told me that Lia would hold the fifth place trophy and that I could pose with the sixth place trophy for photos and I would be mailed a fifth place trophy.” Reily Gaines

We've been watching Western Europe, the USA and NATO spouting off about Russia vs. Ukraine. Where does Turkey fall into this geopolitical clusterfuck?

Turkey: Beware of Islamists Bearing Gifts
'Russian Oligarchs Are Welcome in Turkey'

Then there was what turned out to be a myth about the success of Turkish drones used by the Ukrainian army inflicting "huge" damage on the invading Russian columns. Drones, regardless of their capabilities, cannot be game-changers in a conflict with such vastly asymmetrical military might. The West must send jets, tanks, anti-aircraft, anti-armor and anti-ship missiles, and other weapons to Ukraine to repel Russia's Chinese-backed aggression -- fast -- or the US and Europe will soon find themselves enmeshed in wars even messier to fight.

What else does Erdoğan -- who is and always has been ideologically anti-Western -- think he can win from the West by his hoax charm offensive?

Erdoğan seems to think that just because the madman of Russia did something mad, he, the president of Turkey, can once again fool the West by posing as a pro-Western ally. Let's do a reality check....

Precise legal reasons do not matter when it comes to DTS. Orangeman bad and must be destroyed at any cost.

In a rare moment of focus on the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, the House Select Committee recently took a break from prosecuting political dissidents to claim the violent protest was premeditated. Yet House Democrats impeached Donald Trump on Jan. 13, 2021 on the basis of claiming that riot was spontaneously triggered by the president’s speech at the White House that day despite the first violent action occurring before Trump finished speaking.

“The president of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” GOP Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney said in a statement announcing her intent to impeach. “Everything that followed was his doing.”

The committee Cheney now serves on as vice chair, however, has embraced a new theory with claims the Capitol assault was a pre-planned attack by far-right extremists.

May I suggest buttered popcorn and a dark-roasted beverage that isn't Starbucks? Barista vs. Big Guy.

Tensions flared during a meeting between Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and workers in Long Beach, CA on Friday, closing out a tumultuous first week for the returning executive.

Madison Hall, a 25-year-old barista and union organizer, says that the 68-year-old billionaire repeatedly bristled at and cut off their questions about Starbucks’ handling of the growing union movement within the company.

“If you hate Starbucks so much, why don’t you go somewhere else?” Schultz told Hall, they recalled.

Hall, who has been leading the unionization effort at the Second and Covina store in Long Beach, was offered a last minute invitation to the gathering by their manager on Thursday evening. The event took place in a conference room in a building near the Long Beach Airport, and was pitched to them as “an opportunity to meet with senior-level management,” with little other context.

Alice Cooper played to an audience of 40,000 in Sydney, Australia, the largest crowd to attend a rock concert in the country's history. After the show Cooper was placed under house arrest at his hotel until he posted a bond for $59,632. That amount was the sum that a promoter claimed to have paid Cooper for a 1975 Australia tour he never made. The two settled when it was found that the promoter did not fulfill his part of the agreement either. via thisdayinmusic.com

It's nice to see a cheery vet story. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A homeless dog that brought comfort to U.S. soldiers overseas will now get a chance to live the cozy life in America with one of those soldiers.

The three-year-old mixed breed became like family to Sergeant K. and his Army unit in Kosovo last year, after they found him looking for food around their base.

His daily visits and wagging tail soon became the highlight of their day, delivering comfort to those far from home.

Sgt. Kelsey bonded with the pooch he named Duke and wanted to get him to a better life, out of danger.

I'm not aware of this being any sort of measurable crime statistic, it's just one of those "we're going to ban it because we can get away with it" deals. Plus it will give them an excuse to divert some feebs away from old-and-busted, obviously racist law enforcement activities like keeping LA streets safe enough for mail trucks.

90 Another dependable method to get mail delivery suspended is loose dogs running around. It only takes one dickhead to ruin it for dozens. They will often just skip whole blocks. Kind of a peer pressure thing.

Mail delivery is not nearly so important as it once was, but lots of parcels still being delivered, important stuff.

One of the more ridiculous assertions we'll hear from internet wags "Stealing mail is a Federal crime!" as if they will charge anybody these days. They let murderers go, swiping somebody's box off a porch won't rise to the level of anything, near as I can tell.

137 Cannon, warships, privateers.

In those days, the ships crew would share in the spoils of war. You could certainly own cannon as a private citizen, even own a warship, certainly. The government could compel you and crew to show up and provide your services in times of emergency, however.

Arms and ammunition were expected to be kept in a state of readiness. That way, when an alert or muster was ordered, all able bodied men could go directly to the source of trouble, versus making a beeline first to some centralized armory.

Smaller Cannon were known as "Swivel guns" and would be effective on smaller craft, even keel boats or large canoes. Basically a very large blunderbuss or shotgun muzzle loader. Could be filled with anything, including lengths of chain.

Nobody, not even Democrats, should believe anything Biden says about anything. Jackass has been talking bullshit for 50 fvcking years in Washington. He is a total douchebag par excellance, always has been, but that's not news.

241 Happiness is a choice.
Peace within your heart is a choice.
Love is a choice.

Or you can choose to be miserable and angry and resentful.

But. Depression is personal. It cannot be taken away from you. It's all yours. Until you give it up. And choose to try to be happy. Every day. And then, perhaps, you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Or not.
Posted by: nurse ratched at April 11, 2022 10:45 PM (U2p+3)

I agree. (Clinical depression of course needs medical treatment, but I assume that is not what you are talking about.)

There are happy people living in abject poverty and horrendous circumstances around the world. And there are miserable wealthy people with easy lives. Some people like being happy. Some people will let go of their unhappiness only if you pry it away from their cold dead hands. Oh well.

Of course it's hard work!
I see patients every day, all day, and the vast majority of them have some degree of depression these days. Covid, politics, the state of Seattle, war..... the constant drumbeat of hysterical newscasters screeching about the latest disaster...
Of course these things take their toll on even the healthiest of folks.

Posted by: OrangeEnt at April 11, 2022 11:01 PM (7bRMQ)

That was the rationale. But General Motors no doubt made out like a bandit on the few Liberators actually produced. A double-barreled derringer in 9 mm would have made more sense. Two shots at the Kraut, not one. And if the Gestapo finds a dead Kraut with 9 mm slugs in him, it's not automatically a given that the Resistance was responsible.

314 The Liberator cost barely over $2 in U.S. WWII dollars.

Union Switch & Signal, makers of stamped out railroad and camping lanterns. They only had to change the dies, and the Liberator didn't even have a rifled barrel.

It did though, hold (IIRC) six rounds in the grip. No, not in a magazine. A dump-well, inclusive of the 1" longer than barrel length ramrod, with which to punch out the empty case from the chamber. And then seven reloads, if you were that much of a kommankoziegruppen.

Even a classic two barrel derringer, would take far more machining and fitting than the Liberator, with attendant greater costs. Now, could U.S.S. have engineered a stamped steel derringer? Likely. Might have cost as much as three or four dollars, too!

387 I have met a couple of people who refuse to even try to be happy and I concluded that they were comfortable in their misery. It could be that they had been miserable for so long the thought of giving happiness a try was frightening (fear of the unknown).

I kind of get it. When I had my physical deformity, the thought of having it fixed was a little scary and it seemed less scary for my body to remain the same.

Depression steals your life. It also can make you unwilling to fight against it.

I don't know how much of it is "learned helplessness" and how much of it is depressed levels of brain chemistry, or both.

Martin Seligman's work on Learned Helplessness is a very interesting study on motivation, and how it can be blunted through experiences.

Learned helplessness refers to the maladaptive passivity shown by animals and people following experience with uncontrollable events. Learned helplessness also refers to the cognitive explanation of this phenomenon. The individual learns in one situation that responses and outcomes are independent, represents this learning as an expectation of helplessness, and then generalizes this expectation to other situations in which outcomes objectively can be controlled to produce passivity.

'Twasn't a "suppressor", but rather, the Cutts Compensator. Known today as a Muzzle Brake. And, as you've observed, it was effective. Very much so. The ported barrel on my 11.5 oz Taurus Total Titanium .38 Spl. snubnose revolver makes it very controllable and a recoil pussycat. But no suppression of noise or blast. Just as loud, and louder to those at the firing line. Less recoil though!

442 Grump the military version of the Thompson of course, like the PPsh-40 in the USSR, had substantial changes to materials and manufacture to save time/$$$. And design - no vertical fore-grip, bolt on the side, no long finned barrel.

But some of that may have been for practical/field purposes, I'm just spouting off stuff I think I know about it.

I never knew about the Reising, the SMG the Thompson replaced, until a place I volunteered put one on display. Similar, pretty, but I think proved too failure-prone in field conditions, vs. the Thompson. And they had their debut in Guadalcanal, about as harsh a field condition as you could ask for.

Well right now they are giving bikes away, but not the vintage ones. I did a 1200 sportster last year for a dude. Its a 100th anniversary model, fairly low millage in really nice shape. He got it cheap because of a trans problem, and it was just one gear was bad, so I did a few new gears, all new bearings in the trans, did some nice pistons, new bore, freshened up the heads, new drive belt, and it was mint. He came into the shop last week and tells me he wants to sell it because he bought a bigger bike. He was asking$1800. It was steal.

479 Today was... interesting. Cold & damp, then light rain turning to snow (and it was 75F a couple days ago!) Been very windy for the last week.

Lights all around house were flickering occasionally today, then about 1/2 the house lost power. Checked panel and no tripped breakers. Then it came back with more flickering. Then it was ok until snow turned back to rain. Off. Then on again. Snowed like crazy for a couple hours and lights have remained steady so far. Wind has slowed, I think.

Called power company but who knows when they'll get here? Probably tomorrow. Ugh!

Pretty much any Jap bike, from about '67 to '75, is going to be in the Sweet Spot of the early import era.

Do take care though, that they're either fully restored, or at least properly preserved. Current tires, brakes, fluids, carbs and cables, are paramount.

481 These people...

Last week, American intelligence officials reportedly assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin may use the Biden administration's support for Ukraine as a pretext to order a new campaign to interfere in U.S. elections. Though AP reported that "it is not yet clear which candidates Russia might try to promote or what methods it might use," Russian state media seem to be in agreement that former U.S. President Donald Trump remains Moscow's candidate of choice.

Thanks for the tips, Jim. Most likely I'll never get one. Sold my MGB last month, so you always want something to replace a classic. Oh, so you're older. Well if you want something small, honda made this thing called a rebel some years back, it was a 250 cc, looked like a little harley, well if you squint real hard anyway, but they were kinda cool looking for what they are. Not sure what used ones sell for, but a chick customer of mine had one as her first bike, and she moved up to a harley and sold it pretty cheap, like silly cheap. I got no clue what those go for these days used, but it was light, and reasonably fast.

You got to be a true believer to use ape hangers. Anything above shoulder height starts to get brutal. Wilt Chamberlain, in his autobiography, claimed to have had sex with 20,000 women. Ah, the halcyon days before AIDS, when a simple shot would clear you right up.

To be fair to ol' Wilt, he did travel across the country -- a lot, so mayyyyy-be. If he had a cell phone camera back then, he'd have had his own pr0n channel, probably a pay site, because you know how athletes burn through their playing career money.

Wilt The Stilt takes on a whole new meaning.

AJ the son is the worst main character in the whole series.
Worst as in most loathsome.

I'm sure he had a few doubles and triples thrown in there, too, you know.

ONT Maths Problem: Wilt Chamberlain unknowingly gave us the most interesting math problem ever posed. Naturally, readers worked out how many women Wilt Chamberlain needed to sleep with to reach 20,000 by the time his statement was published. Apparently, if Chamberlain started his count at the age of 15, he would have needed to sleep with 1.4 women every day until he was 55. On the face of it, that seems impossible and it's about to get more implausible.

Tom Fitzhugh says that Chamberlain had not started scoring when this 1955 photo was taken. According to his close childhood friend Tom Fitzhugh, "I don't remember him having a date. He was probably a virgin when he left high school." If Tom was right, that means Chamberlain needed to up his number to 1.5 women per day for 37 years in a row.

Friends of Chamberlain said he loved threesomes. Perhaps his predilection for multiple partners helped boost his gaudy numbers.

The overall story arc is essentially the relationship between Tony and the therapist Jennifer Melfi. It begins in the first episode, and ends in the penultimate one.

I love how Tony's Mom and their relationship is explored. Too bad Nancy Marchon died while they were still filming, wonder where it would have went?

#5 or #15? Unless #5 is photoshopped . . . .

But, yeah, #15 never happened. It's waaayyy too convenient. These hate crime hoaxers need better writers who can actually pen believable dialogue.

I really appreciated her work in the series.
There is one scene where Tony stumbles off her porch and falls flat on his face. She has this fleeting expression of joy(?) At his pain, then turns it into faux concern before going into the house.

She created a truly cruel character.

Only ace can be more cruel.

550 G'mornin', folk,

I see I made the Top 10 commenters list again this week! Between 50 and 60 comments a day . . . my gosh. Minor league beside TJM, for instance, but amazing for me.

Up early to work out; it will probably rain this afternoon and tomorrow. Just 3 more days to stagger through, and then I am off for Good Friday. Are you?
