In a rare moment of focus on the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, the House Select Committee recently took a break from prosecuting political dissidents to claim the violent protest was premeditated. Yet House Democrats impeached Donald Trump on Jan. 13, 2021 on the basis of claiming that riot was spontaneously triggered by the president’s speech at the White House that day despite the first violent action occurring before Trump finished speaking. “The president of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” GOP Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney said in a statement announcing her intent to impeach. “Everything that followed was his doing.” The committee Cheney now serves on as vice chair, however, has embraced a new theory with claims the Capitol assault was a pre-planned attack by far-right extremists. Tensions flared during a meeting between Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and workers in Long Beach, CA on Friday, closing out a tumultuous first week for the returning executive. Madison Hall, a 25-year-old barista and union organizer, says that the 68-year-old billionaire repeatedly bristled at and cut off their questions about Starbucks’ handling of the growing union movement within the company. “If you hate Starbucks so much, why don’t you go somewhere else?” Schultz told Hall, they recalled. Hall, who has been leading the unionization effort at the Second and Covina store in Long Beach, was offered a last minute invitation to the gathering by their manager on Thursday evening. The event took place in a conference room in a building near the Long Beach Airport, and was pitched to them as “an opportunity to meet with senior-level management,” with little other context. FJB Posted by: TexasDan at April 11, 2022 10:17 PM (aMA7g) I'm not aware of this being any sort of measurable crime statistic, it's just one of those "we're going to ban it because we can get away with it" deals. Plus it will give them an excuse to divert some feebs away from old-and-busted, obviously racist law enforcement activities like keeping LA streets safe enough for mail trucks. Another dependable method to get mail delivery suspended is loose dogs running around. It only takes one dickhead to ruin it for dozens. They will often just skip whole blocks. Kind of a peer pressure thing.
Mail delivery is not nearly so important as it once was, but lots of parcels still being delivered, important stuff. One of the more ridiculous assertions we'll hear from internet wags "Stealing mail is a Federal crime!" as if they will charge anybody these days. They let murderers go, swiping somebody's box off a porch won't rise to the level of anything, near as I can tell. Posted by: Common Tater at April 11, 2022 10:24 PM (z7fHM) 91

Cannon, warships, privateers.
In those days, the ships crew would share in the spoils of war. You could certainly own cannon as a private citizen, even own a warship, certainly. The government could compel you and crew to show up and provide your services in times of emergency, however. Arms and ammunition were expected to be kept in a state of readiness. That way, when an alert or muster was ordered, all able bodied men could go directly to the source of trouble, versus making a beeline first to some centralized armory. Smaller Cannon were known as "Swivel guns" and would be effective on smaller craft, even keel boats or large canoes. Basically a very large blunderbuss or shotgun muzzle loader. Could be filled with anything, including lengths of chain. Nobody, not even Democrats, should believe anything Biden says about anything. Jackass has been talking bullshit for 50 fvcking years in Washington. He is a total douchebag par excellance, always has been, but that's not news. Well said. But, depression can be hard to reconcile with. I tend to struggle with this daily. One just needs to try. Every day. Posted by: COMountainMarie Of course it's hard work! I see patients every day, all day, and the vast majority of them have some degree of depression these days. Covid, politics, the state of Seattle, war..... the constant drumbeat of hysterical newscasters screeching about the latest disaster... Of course these things take their toll on even the healthiest of folks. Don't let the bastards get you down. Don't give them that power. Find something to smile about. Every day. Disney, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, announced that their family would match up to $250,000 in donations to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBTQ advocacy group, during the organization's annual gala in Los Angeles last month. The Liberator cost barely over $2 in U.S. WWII dollars.
Union Switch & Signal, makers of stamped out railroad and camping lanterns. They only had to change the dies, and the Liberator didn't even have a rifled barrel. It did though, hold (IIRC) six rounds in the grip. No, not in a magazine. A dump-well, inclusive of the 1" longer than barrel length ramrod, with which to punch out the empty case from the chamber. And then seven reloads, if you were that much of a kommankoziegruppen. Even a classic two barrel derringer, would take far more machining and fitting than the Liberator, with attendant greater costs. Now, could U.S.S. have engineered a stamped steel derringer? Likely. Might have cost as much as three or four dollars, too! It also can make you unwilling to fight against it. I don't know how much of it is "learned helplessness" and how much of it is depressed levels of brain chemistry, or both. Martin Seligman's work on Learned Helplessness is a very interesting study on motivation, and how it can be blunted through experiences. Learned helplessness refers to the maladaptive passivity shown by animals and people following experience with uncontrollable events. Learned helplessness also refers to the cognitive explanation of this phenomenon. The individual learns in one situation that responses and outcomes are independent, represents this learning as an expectation of helplessness, and then generalizes this expectation to other situations in which outcomes objectively can be controlled to produce passivity. https://tinyurl.com/ysxcaa6m Posted by: Kindltot at April 11, 2022 11:46 PM (xhaym) 408

Just as loud, and louder to those at the firing line. Less recoil though! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at April 11, 2022 11:50 PM (QzJWU) 414

Grump the military version of the Thompson of course, like the PPsh-40 in the USSR, had substantial changes to materials and manufacture to save time/$$$. And design - no vertical fore-grip, bolt on the side, no long finned barrel.
But some of that may have been for practical/field purposes, I'm just spouting off stuff I think I know about it. I never knew about the Reising, the SMG the Thompson replaced, until a place I volunteered put one on display. Similar, pretty, but I think proved too failure-prone in field conditions, vs. the Thompson. And they had their debut in Guadalcanal, about as harsh a field condition as you could ask for. I only have a couple of pix of him on it, and from the front so I'm not sure exactly what is was. I rode on it with him plenty of times, but I can't identify it.

ONT Maths Problem: Wilt Chamberlain unknowingly gave us the most interesting math problem ever posed. Naturally, readers worked out how many women Wilt Chamberlain needed to sleep with to reach 20,000 by the time his statement was published. Apparently, if Chamberlain started his count at the age of 15, he would have needed to sleep with 1.4 women every day until he was 55. On the face of it, that seems impossible and it's about to get more implausible. Tom Fitzhugh says that Chamberlain had not started scoring when this 1955 photo was taken. According to his close childhood friend Tom Fitzhugh, "I don't remember him having a date. He was probably a virgin when he left high school." If Tom was right, that means Chamberlain needed to up his number to 1.5 women per day for 37 years in a row. Friends of Chamberlain said he loved threesomes. Perhaps his predilection for multiple partners helped boost his gaudy numbers. Posted by: RickZ at April 12, 2022 02:55 AM (ldL4g) 540
