Barry Lear Cordelia.jpg

King Lear Weeping Over The Dead Body Of Cordelia
James Barry

Well...that was painted in 1788. I love the look of Lear...old and stunned by events and maybe reflecting on his own role in the tragedy unfolding around him.

Curry John Brown.jpg

John Brown
John Steuart Curry

This was painted in 1939, and amazingly, the model that Barry used for Lear and Curry used for John Brown has miraculously gotten younger, and his hair isn't as gray! Or he dyed it, which is sort of embarrassing.

He's certainly a controversial figure, that both left and right appreciate in different ways. Over the years, I've grown to like him more as a true imbodiment of the original American Revolutionary spirit...when inalienable human rights are violated by government, and peaceful, legal attempts at redress have failed, more extreme measures are required.

132 New COVID panic thread over at DU, due to the newest variant, surge in infection rates, whatever. These people will never let it go, and I hope it bites the left in the ass.

Covid infections are up by 68%, over the past two weeks, in my county Genesee County, MI. I see no end to this. I'm SO glad I bought those boxes of masks. Despite what people say of the effectiveness of wearing a mask when others aren't, wearing one does keep my from touching my face until I can hand sanitize and/or wash my hands.

Masks are quite effective even if only one person wearing one Depending upon the type of mask & whether it has a tight fit! Not giving up my N-95's anytime soon!

I have a small stash... About six weeks ago the grocery store had boxes of N95 masks at the entrance and asked that you only take three at a time. I grab three each time I went over a two week period so I have those plus a package I bought earlier in the paint dept. at the True Value. I find that the absolutely best way to avoid Covid is to become a hermit.

"At the age of 55, Brown moved with his sons to Kansas Territory. In response to the sacking of Lawrence, Kansas, John Brown led a small band of men to Pottawatomie Creek on May 24, 1856. The men dragged five unarmed men and boys, believed to be slavery proponents, from their homes and brutally murdered them. Afterwards, Brown raided Missouri – freeing eleven slaves and killing the slave owner."

As gruesome as that is, I also think that scene is one of the most hilarious bits of dark comedy ever done. Remember how in TA it was the "Queens Children" who were killed? In Theater of Blood, a very over-the-top gay character played by Robert Morley is the "queen".

I've long thought that Vincent Price must have loved making that movie more than any other - a disrespected actor gets to kill all of his critics in the most horrible (and literary!) ways possible. What actor wouldn't love that?

But he was one of the last people in America to stand up for art as an idea. He was adamant that art should be for normals, not art people. He didn't like modernism for similar reasons to why I despise it. And he opposed the use of art as political propaganda.

Of course he lost that argument, and the human-hating Satan-artists and their butt-ugly dreck won forever, but he tried.

264 212 186 In the Vincent Price movie Theatre of Blood, a theater critic gets a modified version of Titus Andronicus[i/] treatment. He gets served up as dinner his little dogs.
Posted by: Anna Puma at April 22, 2022 10:13 AM (8BmLM)

As gruesome as that is, I also think that scene is one of the most hilarious bits of dark comedy ever done. Remember how in TA it was the "Queens Children" who were killed? In Theater of Blood, a very over-the-top gay character played by Robert Morley is the "queen".

I've long thought that Vincent Price must have loved making that movie more than any other - a disrespected actor gets to kill all of his critics in the most horrible (and literary!) ways possible. What actor wouldn't love that?
Posted by: Tom Servo at April 22, 2022 10:19 AM (trdmm)

Vincent Price worked on the Yale Record, Yale's version of the Harvard Lampoon, while he was in college. He did have a sense of humor, which seemingly merged with his dark side while making ToB.

Probably new focus. They're now part of a religion that gives them purpose and directs their energies into something specific that provides them some kind of meaning.

Birkman is some sort of personality test, and you get grouped into different colors - Blue, Red, Green, maybe Yellow. I wasn't paying much attention. I think mine pretty much revealed that I like to be left alone, and I like to leave others alone. But no one seemed to take the hint from what the test revealed.

365 I watched a surveillance scene on Tucker's last night. It was Atlanta and black dude gets out of nice GMC or Caddy SUV. Locks it up and another black teenager walks up and shoots in the back at point blank range. The 'Teen' then rifles his pockets and makes off. Another black dude drinking Value Rite gets up, shakes his head and wanders off. Then two more teens show up to rifle the dead mans pockets. At no time did any of these guys think about stealing the nice, new, shing SUV. Amazing.

The only tests I recall taking for a job was as part of being examined for ministry. I recall Myers-Briggs and an intelligence test, and a couple of others too, but not a color test-which seems like an odd sort of test for a job-more like one you'd find in a Woman's Magazine.

Sorry, I didn't explain it well. The Birkman is a standard personality test, but unlike Meyers-Briggs with letters (INTJ, or whatever the heck they are), they use colors instead. The test itself has nothing to do with colors. It asks you stuff like "Do you like group projects, or would you rather slit your own throat?" but at the end of it, they assign you a color based on your results. Same shit, different marketing tool.
