The Sun is a strange and dynamic place. No shit Sherlock.

Sunspot Activity on The Sun Is Seriously Exceeding Official Predictions

Weather predictions here on Earth are more accurate than they've ever been; trying to predict the behavior of our wild and wacky Sun is a little more tricky.

Case in point: according to official predictions, the current cycle of solar activity should be mild. But the gap between the prediction and what's actually happening is pretty significant – and it's getting wider. Sunspot counts, used as a measure for solar activity, are way higher than the predicted values calculated by the NOAA, NASA, and the International Space Environmental Service.

lA NY court fins in favor Trump golf courses. Quite the slap against former NYC Mayor.

A New York Supreme Court judge ruled that New York City cannot void the golf course contract with Trump Organization, saying former mayor Bill de Blasio was interpreting the contract in a way not as written.

The de Blasio administration notified Trump Organization on Jan. 15, 2021, that they were terminating the company’s license for a golf course in Throgs Neck of the Bronx borough.

The city initially claimed that the Jan. 6 event at the Capitol was the reason behind this decision. But de Blasio officials changed course and stated that the city was canceling the contract because Trump Organization was incapable of attracting professional tournament quality events to the Ferry Points golf course.

The city cited the decision of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) to support its decision.

“The PGA’s decision to cancel the 2022 PGA Championship at a Trump-branded golf course demonstrates that a key purpose of the License Agreement has been undermined,” the city argued. “We believe it is clear that neither the PGA nor any similar tournament event organizer will wish to associate its event with the Licensed Premises as long as it is associated with the Trump brand.”

The Senate is working on a Bi-Partisan bill. Shocking. And it appears Big Tech isn't too happy. This could be good. Although I am not holding my breath.

If you want to know how worried an industry is about a piece of pending legislation, a decent metric is how apocalyptic its predictions are about what the bill would do. By that standard, Big Tech is deeply troubled by the American Innovation and Choice Online Act.

The infelicitously named bill is designed to prevent dominant online platforms—like Apple and Facebook and, especially, Google and Amazon—from giving themselves an advantage over other businesses that must go through them to reach customers. As one of two antitrust bills voted out of committee by a strong bipartisan vote (the other would regulate app stores), it may be this Congress’ best, even only, shot to stop the biggest tech companies from abusing their gatekeeper status.

Fed-up managers declare WFH is over, as 77% say they’d fire you or cut your pay for not coming back to the office

About three out of five managers believe that remote work is on the wane and workers will be back in the office full-time by the end of this year.

And they’re apparently prepared to use some tough tactics to get workers back at their desks.

About 77% of managers said they’d be willing to implement “severe consequences”—including firing workers or cutting pay and benefits—on those who refuse to return to the office, according to a recent survey by employment background check company GoodHire of 3,500 American managers.

It's not nice to fvck around with Mother Nature.

British bug-engineering company Oxitec is at it again. According to a new LA Times story, the company is planning to release millions more of its controversial gene-hacked mosquitoes in California in an effort to reduce the population of the nasty bloodsuckers.

Oxitec’s new bug, called OX5034, is made from mosquitoes captured in Mexico. When males mate with females in the wild, a special gene inserted into its genetic code will kill future generations of female mosquitoes, effectively curtailing the insect’s ability to reproduce. The company said only female mosquitoes bite, so they’re releasing males, nixing the fear about being bitten by a modified bug.

Carlos Ortiz, 47, allegedly went to Nic’s on 6th Avenue on March 27. He began to physically attack customers and struck numerous vehicles with plastic signs before striking someone with a sign. Witnesses told police he said he had a gun and threatened to shoot one of the victims.

When a female employee tried to get Ortiz to leave, he struck her with the sign and pushed her against a wall. He then chased after her when she tried to run back inside. Ortiz reportedly broke the mirror off of someone’s car before going inside the store where he hit the female employee and then punched a man in the face.

69 Yeah, those managers wanting to crack the whip to herd the cattle back to the office, well, that says more about them than it does their distributed employees.

Results are the ONLY metric which should matter. If the Team is getting the Results, all is well. And if individual employees are producing the results, all is well. If not, deal correctively, as needed. Coaching, not cancelling.

But how lost is the feeling of a "manager" who doesn't have the line-of-sight control over his or her Team minions? I'll wager that the same percentage of "managers" who want to use that whip, are the same percentage of "managers" to sought those positions for much the same reasons a sociopathic cop seeks the commission and badge. Mandatory fun corporate meetings are all on Zoom, so I can mute and not share my video and still get useful work done without drawing attention to myself!

Some work is not suited for remote setups, I get that. But mine definitely is. And the tech industry is reading the writing on the wall, and mostly resigned to the fact that a lot of workers like being remote. Plus, it gives them a HUGE hiring pool that was not accessible before. People can live where it is cheap and work anywhere.

State of Oregon rules for its own workers was that all essential workers that remained workin in the offices were required to wear masks, even while in their cubicals, but managers and other employees with offices with doors were exempt while at their enclosed offices.
When essential workers asked if they could use the various conference rooms as offices since they all had connectivity and doors, they were told that was not possible because conference rooms were needed in case there was a need for group meetings.

And now they don't understand why workers don't want to come back to the office to work, and are considering sanctions for those that decide not to

They would give me their grocery list, a collection of paper food stamps, and some very crumpled 1 and 5 dollar bills. "Make sure we don't go over!"

They always went over, and I made up the difference from my $2.65/hr pay.

155 Progress notes on the B-26K.

1. Landing gear painted. Decided not to install the brake lines, for the moment.
2. BLU-23 napalm tanks were painted and then had some grunge put on them.
3. Added some of the gray insulation to the inside of the canopy and used a bit of scrap PE to simulate the upper canopy center console. Put the Eduard canopy masks on and glued the cockpit and observer canopies on.
4. Installed the resin 8 machine gun mount from Quickboost into nose and then glued the whole nose to fuselage. And yes there is plenty of weight in the nose to ensure the kit sits properly.

If you work from home, you are on call 24/7. No owner wants to hear you are at dinner, or you are sleeping, or that you want to spend a moment with your family.

It's as if they believe that because they pay you a salary for your work, that they now own your house where your office is...the office that you, the employee, pay all the connectivity for, the electricity, the heating, and the mortgage.

Best deal these owners ever got, but it doesn't temper their 24/7 demands - it seems to fuel it.

1. Masking no longer required in airports and on planes.
2. The White House ceases their mask on-again/off- again policy and goes to no masks required all the time, everywhere in the White House. The game of protecting Joe from having a positive test, let alone getting sick, for political purposes, needs to end.

I guess it depends on the work situation, and for non-awful work situations, on the individual.

I do not answer work calls after 5.30 (6 at the latest) and never on the weekend, and, with some exceptions, I don't respond to client emails after 6 or 7. I may work like on ox, but I don't have to make myself available to people 24/7.

Of course, I realize I can only say this because I have a reasonable work environment. But some of my colleagues feel they have to constantly be at their clients' beck and call.

201 A lot of office jobs, especially tech ones, were moving to work from home years ago, but a number of managers and execs stopped it - Marissa Meyer being one of the most notable ones.

COVID led to broad adoption of work from home...and it turns out the technology to allow large numbers of people to work from home has gotten MUCH better.

So there are two concerns around it one real and one...very leftwing.

1) Do people still put in as much effort from home? You do have to manage differently but...I'd actually say yes. At least for these office/tech type jobs.

2) You can't subject people to all the leftwing corporate crap as easily when they are home. Sure you can tell me the corporate policy on pronouns and make me go to online diversity meetings...but I don't have to sit next to a tranny and call him "her" from home...

213 No way, it is true that mistakes were made, but our hands were tied because we trusted experts, and, besides, at this point what difference does it make?

All it takes is one prosecutor, anywhere in the US, to bring a case against Fauci for a death/injury of someone forced to take the clot shot.

Two things are going on, one is there is either a chemical or temperature threshold that kills the gene altered females and allows the males to live and be released, and this same (or possibly similar) threshold makes the males sterile.

IIRC it is a chemical treatment that prevents the inserted lethal gene from expressing until the chemical is withheld, that way the gene altered mosquitoes can be bred successfully, but also the final generation can have the females excluded because their genetics become lethal during development. Further, if the mosquitoes are not fully sterilized, they tend to have only male offspring that survive, and they are not toxic to bats and other mosquito eating fauna.

Finally, there is no concern about genes getting into the wild species since the dangerous mosquitoes in the new world are invasive species anyways

It's actually about 1/16 of an inch less than that in precise measurement, but it's still a 2 x 4. Just like 3/4" plywood is about 1/16 of an inch less than 3/4", and on and on. However, once in place, the measurements tend to even out for the full assembly. 16" CMU is 15-5/8", plus the 3/8"
joint, and it's 7-5/8" thick.....

Nobody is going to call it what it really measures. Not in the office, not in the field.

335 I press and can apple juice in quart jars, it is very nice to have on the shelf, and generally I water it down because it is so sweet.

Another trick is to make apple jam instead of jelly. Peel and core your apples, and instead of extracting the juice run them through the shredder like you were making carrot salad out of apples. Then cook the shreds like you were preparing pulp for jam. It makes the jam much brighter in taste. You can do this with pears too. Pear jam is heavy and kind of muddy in flavor in general, when you use the shreds it is very delicate and tasty

341 No one should count on wild game for sustainence in the Burning Times.

Swarms of mostly suburban hunters, hungry and desparate to feed their families, will range far afield, poaching and scavenging their way down to the roots.

Nice to think that the ranchers and landowners will stop them, and they certainly will make a dent and slow them down. But in the end, the poaching will be 24/7, innumerable and overwhelming as an invading force. (and yes, many will turn to theivery, thuggery, rape and murder)

I think Rural Defense is going to have to rally around a strong Sheriff, deputize all eligible and willing adults, and roadblock & patrol as many roads in/out of the county as possible. Lots of Drumhead Trials, and rapid imposition of sentencing. People are going to have to be afraid to GO into those Counties, unless invited.

Individual homes and even ranches, are just targets. Gonna take a lot of rallying and developing rapid response systems. Gotta rain hell down on intruders, and that by the metric shit-ton.

352 Tammy Al-thor, I built a dryer out of a small chest freezer that the neighbor was throwing away. I pulled out the compressor, punched a couple of holes the size of soup cans for intake and exhaust, and I used a fan from a junked computer, and a 200 Watt ceramic "reptile heating lamp" for a heat source. I built racks out of window screen and 3/4" lathes.
The only bought things were the screen and the heat lamp.

It looks as if the international clearing of credit is going to be done in Gold instead of US Dollars, which is a problem since there is far more gold credited to accounts than there is actual gold in vaults.

If I owned paper gold or gold shares, I might think a bit on my position on owning it. I also wonder about defaults on all these massive loans and if that would keep inflation under control

The dollar's reserve status is the only reason the US govt. has gotten away with this insanity for the past few decades. The reason the dollar has reserve status is not "cause we're the US", which it seems a lot of our leaders believe.

Yes, it was set after WWII because we were king of the hill then, but it wouldn't have been sustained without providing benefit the rest of the world. That benefit was a stable currency (the dollar is stable), and a stable economy, and perhaps most important of all, a stable and rule-of-law financial system.

The dollar and US govt and economy provided that. In return we got print a lot of money and run huge deficits without much consequence. The reason is it "exports" the inflation that would normally result.

392 But, after the '08 Crisis, the Fed started printing like crazy. Then that accelerated wildly in 2020 with the Coof shutdowns and huge Coof relief payments.

Then, add in the Ukraine response and the sanctions, where they just started cutting off access to the financial system for people they didn't like. This undermines that faith in dollar and financial system stability.

We only painted the harrows because the powdercoat company didn't have ovens big enough for them. We had good luck with it, but we also bought the toughest coating we could get. We started out with a hammercoat but that had pinprick spots that would start rust, so we went to a solid coat.
The owner grew up running farm equipment and was particular about finish and durability.

If you can't trust your neighbor to at least NOT SHOOT YOU? And if you are so afraid of what others will do or say, you no longer speak your mind?

Our very very complicated way of life... ends.. because if I can't trust the lights to stay on, and my water to work.... and planes to be on time... (all three things which have impacted me in the last couple of weeks)... then we have real problems.

Yes, and you can call trust "certainty". It's not so much blind faith, but having a system that guarantees you will be paid and have contracts enforced.

International trade is a relatively long term process. Somebody in Country B wants to purchase some products from Country A. When the producer in A commits to producing that product, he thus puts himself on the hook right then for a lot of costs.

He ain't gonna do it without a guarantee that he's gonna get paid. That's what the US dollar reserve and financial system enabled. He knows he's gonna get paid, and has a mechanism for enforcement. And the currency is gonna get paid in is not going to be worthless when he does get paid.

See the whole letter of credit/bills of lading system. Producer A gets a letter of credit from some "trustworthy" financial party, a bank that's good for it. That LOC tells the producer and the producers home bank that yep, you're gonna get paid, no matter what. You produce and ship the goods, we're covering it.

That all depends on trust, stability, and certainty. The US economy, financial system, and dollar provided that.

I remember a Perry Mason episode dealing with fraud in international shipping and the payment system. A murder resulted, of course.

Anyway, the scheme was steal the goods and re-sell them, and put dummy cargo on the ship. The captain would then have an "emergency" which required him to jettison the cargo to save the ship. Insurance would take the hit on the shipment, and they'd get the profit from selling the real goods.

I've just had the strangest transformation of opinion. Like flipping a light switch. I've loved Donald Trump. His rallies were stirring and patriotic, joyously American. He stopped Hillary cold!! His first three years as President were the best administration of my long lifetime. The border! The regulations rollback! The energy policies! The foreign policies! Melania! ('Nuff said.) So much good done!

But I think he's lost what little edge he had. It's not just the endorsement of Dr Oz. It's what it represents about him. The other day when Ace was all never-Trumpish I was harshly objecting (not out loud; I don't argue with the Boss) all the way - oh, that Ace! But Trump really is so bad about judging people!

I'm thinking, President Trump would not be good for us. Not again. Not anymore. We need a real, serious swamp-drainer who won't fold to a Fauci, fall for the bamboozlers, but say and do all those good things Trump was saying and doing. Is there such a person who could win, and have us tired of winning again? Not that I know of. But it isn't Trump.

I'll re-evaluate in the sober morning, but that's where I am at the moment.

440 I finally went to back to work downtown after more than 2 years of working from home. I don't care one way or the other. Whichever. Both have pros and cons. But I think the last 2+ years are definitive proof that this whole commuting to a central office thing is unnecessary for many people. I'm not sure why there is an urge to return in many cases.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at April 11, 2022 01:07 AM (KFhLj)

People in and around NYC do not want to start commuting back to Manhattan again because they might just get killed thanks to the progressives' war on criminal justice; you know: Arrest, trial, conviction, sentencing, jail/prison term. The only people progressives want to send to jail are people who protest against big 'Sugar Daddy' government, like the January 6th protesters. Even though progressives probably do not support the death penalty, oh how they'd love to publicly hang those January 6th protesters.

I tend to agree that a second Trump presidency will not be good. I think Trump's presidency over-all was a failure because he listened too much to his family and didn't comprehend how wide and deep the swamp that is the Deep State really is. And while loyalty is generally a good thing he was too loyal to those in his administration who undermined his agenda. Trump was a model for other non-politicians to run for higher office. I just don't see any non-politicians running for office who are worth a damn. While many seem to be on a high with pushing DeSantis to run, he's a politician, too. I simply do not trust political animals in government any more.

We know enough about him to know that there can't be any chance in hell he would be that fucking stupid again. He faced tough business people in his time, but I don't think he ever faced pure fucking evil. He saw it now, and if there is a slim chance in hell he hasn't figured it out then yeah, I'll be the first to tell him to take his wind bag speeches and press them in his ass. There has been nobody like him in my lifetime, he was an outsider and had some shit to learn. The left robbed him of the chance to use what he learned, because I think they knew. Not voting for him at this point just gives the left what they wanted, to make him toxic. Yeah, not falling for it. Fuck them.

That's not my point as I'm not comparing Trump to other people, I'm just comparing Trump to Trump. Of course there aren't any other names of people who might do better that I can name, but that doesn't detract from Trump' faults (and mean tweets is NOT one of his faults). I just think the political class is so far entrenched today that the whole concept of We the People running the show is lost forever. Trump was a step in the right direction to reestablishing that concept, but a wobbly baby step nonetheless. Trump set a path, will anyone follow?

We used to not-so-laughingly joke about Republican candidates needing to beat the margin of fraud to win. But after 2020, the margin of fraud is a sliding scale on a state-by-state basis, with machines pre-programmed to spit out enough votes for Republican candidates to lose. Even Trump couldn't beat that.

518 I couldn't read all of that Fortune article MH linked to about "work from home is over." What are people going to do who moved hours away from their office, because the company subscribed 100% to the Coof Hysteria, and now demands they come back? I guess they'll have to find new gigs. Might or might not be difficult depending on the field.

I'm trying to connect with a remote editing/writing gig myself, to supplement my income in retirement. So far no nibbles. Maybe Indeed dot com is not all it's cracked up to be.

519 512 I wonder how far right Marine le Pen is. Since we cannot trust the press.

All I know is from listening to the rant above. Sounds good.

521 It should not be a problem, as I think he will be out of town this weekend himself.

Now see?

When I worked at the Tulane book store, I took my daily half hour break between when Miss Stella and Mrs. Barbara took their breaks to watch their "stories".

Everybody was effectively "on break" for three hours every afternoon.

Named for Miss Cindy's Grandmother.
