I've Been To One World's Fair, A Picnic, And A Rodeo, And That's The Stupidest ONT I Ever Heard!

Just a fair warning here. I'm going to open tonight's ONT with a bit of NSFW content:

NSFW.jpg

Commentary

Watching a film about communism, I realised I had been lied to as a child in China

It's an interesting story. She grew up in China, then moved to the US and discovered freedom, now she lives in Europe. Still, I wonder where she really stands, I'd love to have a conversation with her, to find out what she means by, and what she thinks “freedom” means. I wonder if she's a progressive, it's not a bad bet, she seems to be a perpetual student. She talks about the trappings of western life, but that's a result of prosperity, not freedom (and yes I realize that the later usually leads to the former). If she is a progressive, does she realize that it's a totalitarian ideology, just like the Maoist one from her childhood, only with guilded trappings. I dunno, it seems like it could be an interesting conversation.

Turning Point?

A Victim Too Far: How Transgenders Will Bring Down the Lefty Marxists Who Want to Destroy America

Will the tranny madness be the straw that breaks the Marxist left's back? I dunno, I truly thought it would have happened before now. I'll tell you this, however. If it does happen it won't be because of any organized “conservative” resistance, it'll be because the loony left gets too extreme for itself. How many blacks are all in on making transgenders the civil-rights-issue-of-our-time? Most of them still believe that racial equality is the only civil rights issue going on, being told to abandon that for a dude in a dress will not sit well with them. How many women are going to be willing to (figuratively) suck it up and deal with dangling male genitalia in their private areas? Sure, some of them are gung ho for it, but many aren't. And what happens when the wheel turns another notch and it's on to normalizing pedophilia? It would be the ultimate irony if the left destroys itself rather than the right defeating them.

On Russia

This first link is quite long, I'm not even through it all myself, but it is very interesting.

Finnish Intelligence Officer Explains the Russian Mindset

Authoritarian rule has followed Russian rule since the Mongol era. It hasn’t changed since then. The name of the leader has changed but authoritarian rule itself has always remained the same. Russia sees itself as the heir to the Soviet Union, as it is in some respects.

There are 11 time zones in Russia. These huge distances also affect Russia. From the Polish border to Moscow, through to the Urals, is a plateau that is easy to attack with both horses and tanks. That is what has been done. Napoleon attacked, the Germans attacked, and so on. That idea is also in the genetic inheritance of the Russians, that someone is always attacking. “We will be conquered.” They have no shelter, no mountains, no rivers. There are no lakes between the east and the capital. Geographically, Russia has always been easy to conquer, which also influences their thinking.

It's pretty interesting stuff.

Here's A Solution To Groomers That I Can Get Behind

Indonesian court sentences teacher to death for raping 13 students

“This guy was grooming girls and then having sex with them”, trans groomer apologists will claim, “we just want to talk to trans children to let them know they're OK the way they are”. Sure thing, Spartacus, and if you pull this leg it plays Jingle Bells. So, fair trade. You can talk to kids all you like about sex, but when we catch you with your pants down whispering “Don't tell your mom about this” you get a quick .45 round to the back of the head, deal?

Thursday Night Poll

red pill.jpg

OK, Morons, which is it? Red pill or blue pill? On the surface it's a no brainer, if I could take all my current knowledge back to the early 70s when I was 6, I'd be worth billions today. No question. OTOH, I think I'd take the blue pill. I like who I am today, and I wouldn't want to give up my wife and kid hoping to do better by going 'round again. What say you?

The Real Thing

Cola Wars in Mexico

It's in a Leftist rag, but the article is interesting. I like the response of the Mexican politician, when told he should get rid of Coke because of its corruption: “We have a way to get rid of Coke. We will drink every last bottle.”

Whoops

The Final Countdown

Disclaimer: The woman survives, the asshole husband is in jail, so all's well that ends well. I just couldn't resist the above title when I saw this story. And yes, I did sing it when I read the article.

Husband told wife to close her eyes and counted down from 10 before slitting her throat

Sleep Lost: None

Man Jailed for Murdering Toddler Killed by Inmates

I'm supposed to be against vigilante justice, and I suppose I am, but I have a hard time being emphatic about it.

Oh no anyway.jpg

OUTRAGE!

Chinese outrage, but it's still problematic.

P&G apologizes after sparking outrage with social media post claiming women's feet smell '5 times worse' than men's

The story is trivial, but of course P&G did the requisite shuck and jive apology, etc, etc. What gets me is who cares? I mean honestly, why would you care. A company makes a claim in an ad “Women's feet smell!”.......so? So what? Really, if it pisses you off don't buy the product, that'll teach them as well as anything. The sheer hysteria today “Sexist! Racist! “Boycott!” of absolutely nothing of consequence and thus absolutely everything seriously boggles my mind. My wife calls it a Muppet flail, after Kermit.

Flail.gif
Muppet flail

Sometimes it seems that all of society is stuck in one giant, never ending Muppet flail.

Putin's official spokesman today admitted that the heavy casualties taken by the Russian military have been a "Great Tragedy". It appears that this is why Putin is redoubling his efforts to bring in troops from various middle eastern countries like Syria; even if he does, I don't this will work out well for him. Arab armies in serious combat have shown that they generally break and run as soon as they face any heavy opposition.

Not irony, all but certain. The "right" defines itself in opposition to the left. Without the left, there is no right. Think of the GOPe, Conservative Inc. And how they looner the left gets, the less they push. Why? Because without the left, they cease to be relevant.

73 I am amused all the stories on "understanding Russia" that then focus on a thousand years of history. I know the history myself, and the reality is much simpler.

Putin is a traditional paternal autocrat. He wants to do what is good for his country and what is good for him...Most certainly not in the order of course.

America has been antagonizing him since 2014. America is weak. Putin has a reasonable claim for war - since Ukraine/US have broken the agreements they have with him on autonomy for the Russian enclaves and no NATO in Ukraine.

Its really that simple. No Biden? No War.

93 Need Horde advice. Would you respond to this survey? I received a "random" email from the US Census Bureau asking me to fill out a 20 minute survey, approved by the OMB. It looks legit.

This is what it asks: "To support the nation's recovery, we need to know how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected people's health, employment and education. We need your response to measure the effects of Covid-19 on individuals, families and communities across the country. The survey asks how childcare, education, employment, energy use, food security, health, housing, household spending Child Tax Credit payments and INTENTION TO RECEIVE A COVID-19 VACCINATION have been affected by the ongoing crisis. While your participation is voluntary, it is very important (They said I might get up to 3 reminders to fill it out.)

103 Springtime in Texas... and Oklahoma.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned before that I was out at the shed, talking to the neighbor, while his granddaughter was buzzing around our yards on the mower.

Suddenly, she runs up to her car, grabs a cute little pink pistol, and runs off. Told the neighbor, I bet your kids all put in some range time. He confirmed. Then six shots ring out.

I wandered over. They'd found a rake and dangling from it, still wiggling for a few moments, was a water moccasin with four big holes in it. Pretty good shootin'!

Never go mowing the tall stuff without a sidearm!

Ah, burgers are served. BBL.

119 Greg Yudin, a professor in Moscow with some very insightful commentary on Russian public opinion, has some cheery thoughts in New York magazine:

In many respects, the attitude that Putin himself developed but also imposes on society is that nuclear blackmail is okay. And it was like that even before the war. But when the war started, I think it got even worse. Because there was just this deep belief that the more we're bragging about the ability to start a nuclear war, the more concessions we will get. The belief is that the United States is weak and is not going to start a nuclear war over some country in Eastern Europe or Europe in general. And for that reason, we just have to be strong enough, and that will be enough for them to give us whatever we want.

The biggest patriotic holiday of the year in Russia is May 9th - Victory Day, celebrating Russian victory in WWII.

Putin badly wants a victory by then. The next month is likely to be very, very interesting.

I've had two. The majority of the time the first one doesn't work permanently, and the doc has to go back a few years later and burn the sh*t out of the inside of your atrium. The whole point is to slow down the nerve impulses (they travel slower through scar tissue) so that the "beat" impulse from the pacemaker gets there before the one from your nervous system, and you stay in rhythm. It sounds like a big deal, but it's really not.

188 My favorite Russian fairy tale is about the hard working farmer who was out working in his fields, when the Archangel Michael suddenly appeared to him saying, "Nikolay, the Lord has noticed your hard work and piety for these many years, and he has decided to reward by granting you anything you desire! There is only one condition on this reward; whatever is given to you, your neighbor Ivan up the road will be given double the amount."

So Nikolay ponders this wondrous offer for a bit, and finally says "Oh servant of the Most High, I have decided. I ask that you make me Blind in one eye."

197 USA has had the benefit of oceans for defense, also the benefit of being a new land, after the "Western development" across Europe. So those WASPy guys escaping religious and royal tyranny had a new land to start afresh.

BUT, we also have been constantly under attack, at least from the spiritual point of view ... which includes the attack on the one nation that recognized man's God Given Rights. A Republic, if you can keep it. We need to be a little more Russia like, in that determination ... but instead leaned toward "let's open our doors to the world, and allow any 'free thinker' to dominate US".

Language, Borders, Culture. Learn it, advance it, protect it. Or lose everything to evil tyranny.

269 I skimmed the Finnish IC guy essay, he does make some interesting points. Also sheds some light on what functional mechanisms keep the Russian state together, though this seems to be an area that could use a much better understanding.

What I find most interesting about the Ukraine invasion is that, for all Russia's talk of shared cultural Russian-ness with the Ukes, they do not appear to have considered the risks that some of those Russian attributes could be turned against them.

pretty true for all centralized power. Checks and balances, good concept ... separation or powers, yeah, great theory. Only specific powers listed allowed for federal government to control .. yeah, worked kinda/sorta, for a little while.

Now ... Technocracy (run by ? oligarchs and puppets) might cancel you for not loving the trannie, or denying global warming, or supporting liberty. They've extracted trillions, really plan to own everything ... you will own nothing, they say it out loud.

When the story first came out, I predicted they would be found to have been Iranian agents. Late breaking today - both men had Iranian passports, and also connections to Pakistan. My guess is that they were positioning themselves for an assassination at some point.

360 I was watching a video from a Russian leaning source that claimed to be a news report from Mariupol. It was interesting as they had someone who was clearly an American as the "reporter" though no one I've seen before.

The point of the video was to show some Russian leaning people giving out food to the locales - the person leading the effort was an Donbas Russian leaning pol who I saw discussed back in 2014...so she's real, and locales complaining about the Azov Battalion people committing atrocities in Mariupol...who might be actors, bought off, or telling what they saw.

Its interesting to see the other side's propaganda. Clearly they are trying to get some air time in western countries since it was in English. And to give them some credit they didn't pull something from a video game. I can't tell from the video if they are really in Mariupol or in Donbas somewhere. But...that part of Ukraine did support Yanukovych before our coup.

Probably too much for a 6 year old...but give it a few years....especially if you have a good relationship with your parents.

This would be good fodder for an SF movie. Your kid claims an alien invasion or something is coming up because he lived it and was sent back. You laugh about it...and he tells you tomorrow the news is going to report a new comet with some weird name...and tomorrow they do...

And when people engage in deep pessimism and cynicism, they will refuse to embrace happiness if it gave them a big wet smooch on the face because that would contradict their attitude to life.

433 I've been hearing that there is a general disruption in air travel because crews are just not showing up. Staging mass "sick-outs", where they all call in sick at the same time. Refusing to work any shift they don't absolutely have to. Generally just saying Fuck You to the airlines. Not enough to be a full on strike, just.... disrupting.

It's not just Hollywood. It goes back well before that. In fairy tales the fair maidens are fair, witches are ugly, heroic knights are strapping and handsome. Societies all over the world have been sending messed up messages to people about how to pick a partner.

At least, the Bible emphasized good character as the main thing.

They just have to be eye candy or trophy bitches, and they can get get anything they want. I knew one gal at work who was ridiculously hot, and I think she must have gotten some good advice or had parents who cared or something, because she knew how to handle herself intelligently. That's what I mean by "breeding". Kind of like finishing school or whatever they called it. She knew how to act with "poise and confidence" and all that stuff, kind of a lost art.

533 As Thomas Sowell said, "Each new generation born is an invasion of civilization by barbarians who must be civilized before it's too late." The left are busy "civilizing" them in their own warped values, which are more akin to those of pagan times when human life was cheap, and pedophilia, slavery and rape were just the way of the world.

We thought the fall of the USSR would vanquish the communists. Instead they merely shifted tactics, never loosening their grip on our children. We should have treated them the way we treated the Nazis after WWII.

No, the left won't go away without a serious push from some kind of organized resistance. Only question is, is it too late?

Yep. He's one of the 'little people' who had such a tremendous negative effect. He just didn't kill Archduke Ferdinand and Sofie, he killed millions in WWI*.

One thing I did not understand about Princip was that he was not executed for the assassination, back when Europe was still executing murderers and traitors. He died in prison in April, 1918 of malnutrition and the effects of tuberculosis. Don't know why, but I always just assumed he was executed.

* Interesting tidbit from Wiki: From February to June 1916, Princip met with Martin Pappenheim, a psychiatrist in the Austro-Hungarian army, four times. Pappenheim wrote that Princip refused to accept responsibility for the consequences of his actions and that he claimed to believe the World War was bound to happen regardless, and that he "cannot feel himself responsible for the catastrophe".

Crazy thing is, most of the 19th century European despots were pikers by 20th century standards. Read Sean McMeekin's superb history of the Russian Revolution (you can tell he's not a fan). Apparently the czars only executed about 6000 prisoners during the last few decades of their reign. The commies exceeded that within the first few months of taking over.

If you read the book, you'll be amazed at 1) the remarkable (and scary) parallels to the present moment and 2) how lucky Lenin was. As the author says, he was very fortunate in his enemies, who were worse than the Keystone Cops. Kerensky in particular was a world-historical fool.

619 Replacing Putin as an objective just confirms how unserious and ignorant anyone focusing on that is. Moscow being paranoid/extremely touchy about Ukraine's military status and alignment is obvious plain vanilla Russian security thinking, and it's hardly crazy. There is not a robust strain of Yeltsinesque* casual indifference to historical Russian security concerns in Russia, ready for its turn. FFS.

It's like the incredibly boring and generally stupid (sorry) but endless taffy yanking about Biden being replaced. There's zero material difference between him and any other Dem in that position, on issues of importance. Zero. And that's all that matters.

* Yeltsin had neither the disposition nor time nor energy to deal with external security issues very much, due to circumstances, and was on these things quite the outlier in his approach

629 Miklos the dismissal of Russian concerns since 1991 has varied from casual to distracted to purposeful (and somewhat reasonable, as with Poland and the Baltics) to outright cavalier, if my understanding of the Geneva talks last year is accurate.

Every competent and smart and non-iron-rice-bowl-guarding person in the field I knew in 1991 had one reaction: expand NATO? WTF? REVISIT the entire topic of NATO.

Related, anyone confronting a typically mindless rah-rah cheerleader for Ukraine and acting like this is one of the crises this same person completely pooh-pooh'd when prior ones, which were the real thing, came along, one question to fry their circuits.

I've been mulling this over. Maybe you look at a daytime nap as a gift, and nighttime sleep as a job requirement?

802 Pixy is tied up in a loooooooong Friday afternoon/evening meeting, is my guess.

Posted by: m at April 08, 2022 05:05 AM (2Q+cC)

803 Went to my writing group meeting out in the 'burbs last night, so I didn't get to bed until fairly late, for me. Friday night is my time to catch up on sleep, it seems. Just got to stagger through one more work day.

Doesn't seem right here without at least one cat for company. It's like trying to play a piano that's had a blanket stuffed into it: muffled and deadened. I've not been cat-less since 1983, and before that from '81 back to '65.

807 And the writing group meeting was sort of pointless. The two guys left in it besides me don't really have anything to teach me, and they resist *my* suggestions. It's time to move on . . . but to what? The Book Thread on Sundays has more zing to it.

I need to look at my "More Stories" Word document with notes and ideas, and see if something strikes my fancy as a new project either long or short.

We don't. We try not to be *over*-influenced by the people we read, but there's always an influence. If you mean by their opinions and advice rather than their work, well, you develop an instinct over time that tells you what works and feels right for you for a given story and bunch of characters. If the advice fits and improves things, fine; otherwise it can be safely ignored. But that instinct takes time to develop.

Would make an interesting Sci-Fi story, for any of the authors amongst us?

824 Black trans was an issue in Charlottesville yrs ago before things spun completely out of control. Allegedly, the police were not doing enough to find a missing teen.

Also, an alleged issue at a franchise Chick-fil-A located in SE Pennsylvania right before BLM marches began in the county years ago. Public radio tried to drum it up as a major issue but it faded into the mostly peaceful marches.
