It's the final weekend of campaigning for the first round of the French Presidential elections.

The French presidential elections are run in what we'd call a "jungle primary" system; everyone runs all at once, and then the top two finishers go on to run against each other for the prize a few weeks later.

The general pattern has been that LePen can always win one of the top two slots, but cannot actually win the presidency, because everyone that isn't a committed National Front voter (now a National Rally voter) will flip to support whatever candidate LePen is running against. And so you'll have French Republicains or Socialists or whoever voting for Hollande or Macron to keep LePen out of office.

Instapundit wonders if a left-right coalition has now had enough of the establishment that they will unite to take down Macron in France.

He thinks the left and right might have so many grievances against the establishment -- some of them in common -- that they're willing to join together to vote LePen in. (It should also be noted that LePen is a more economically liberal, or softly socialist, than American supporters might realize.)

He also wonders if the same left-right coalition isn't coming to America.

It is, on both sides of the partisan divide: the NeverTrump Neocons are obviously now just adherents of a highly partisan and stupid Belligerent Boutique Liberalism, who now call people "racist" in addition to slurring them as "traitors."

And on the right side, actual conservatives are sick to death of being fucked over by mega-corporations and told by the establishment GOP that corporate citizens are the only real citizens.

And blacks and Hispanics are getting sick of the Democrats pushing a program of very weird Surburban Wine Mom sexual freakery as the height of Social Justice.

The usual establishment move is to call its opponents on the right bigots while mobilizing those on the left to attack the right. The elites present themselves as anti-fascist and anti-racist, but this is merely a way of defending their class interests. In the United States, they talk a lot about white supremacy, but nobody really thinks that the United States is in danger from white supremacists -- whenever you hear of a white-supremacist "hate incident" nowadays, odds are it will turn out to have been faked.
The left is pushing "trans rights" and "transphobia" as a way of accusing their opponents of bigotry, but shockingly, the black and Hispanic voters that Democrats have always depended on aren't super excited about being in the vanguard on these issues.
Those voters are also pretty unexcited about the inflation, unemployment and crime that have resulted from Democratic spending, overregulation and "depolicing." Politico reports that Democratic focus groups are finding crime fatigue, pandemic fatigue, cynicism about politics and frustration that the Biden administration hasn't delivered what it promised.

John Sexton writes about polling showing that LePen could, possibly, win this time.

Though I don't believe it. The vain suburban bourgeoise French Wine Moms, like the American ones, will always vote in a way to cultivate their own sense of Propriety and Social Standing, and so we'll always see communists voting along with "capitalists" (as capitalist as people get in France) to vote for any candidate other than Le Pen.

You might wonder how Eric Zemmour is doing. Well, a quick look at the polls (sondages in France, if you want to google for it) says he's got between 9.5% and 11% support. That's not as bad as it may seem, because remember, the premier tour (first round) of voting is a jungle primary where maybe a 8-12 serious or semi-serious candidates are running, the two winners will probably get 21-25%.

But it's also not up at the level to get the ticket to the second tour.

Zemmour says the polls are always wrong since 1995, and I can't say he's wrong.

Here's a recent speech: "After everything that the Ministry of Education has forced you to submit to, it's a miracle that you're here [at Zemmour's rally]. Congratulation to you. You have resisted the propaganda. What force of conviction, what analytical minds!... I'm very sincere, I often wonder how you made your escape from indoctrination."

I expect them to go further than that. I think they'll try to simply decree rightwing votes as invalid per se. Really. It'd be a kind of insurrection to resist the will of the Inner Party. Just like Jefferson Davis. And we didn't allow him to vote in 1864, did we?

Another they might try is to challenge enough Republican electees to avoid us having the majority at first, while this is being decided. Of course they'll use the old ways of cheating, but be sure they'll come up with some new ones. They're always a step ahead.

I wish our side could steal a jump on them, but that's not who we are.

I spent one Winter working on Union Pacific's right away with trains zipping past. In the right conditions you can't hear or feel the ground vibrations of fast moving trains. All it took for one us to become hamburger was to get too close to the track when a train flew past. At speed you can actually be pulled in to the train as it forms a suction.

Will Smith is in the position of many people - someone suffering abuse at the hands of a narcissist spouse/partner. The types of people narcissist prey on will generally not leave them except under extreme circumstances, and even then, they may not leave. It's more likely the narcissist dumps them.

He had a messed up life. He grew up with an extremely abusive father and he feels intense guilt for not protecting his mother from him. Jada probably uses that against him to make him feel he has to protect and treasure her at all costs.

Same thing Meghan Markle is doing with Harry. Taking advantage of his issues with his mother's death, among other things.

Why would he care if she spilled a secret like that? He has a son who wears evening gowns, a wife who publicly talks about having sex with their son's friends, etc. It's not as if Will Smith would be embarrassed by the revelation of a gay affair; he's immune to embarrassment.

Coming out as a polyamorous gay man would probably just help his career now. He'd be celebrated as "brave" and "bold" and offered more movie roles and given more awards.

It is likely.
The trains on that line are kind of quiet though if not for the fact that they are constantly blowing their horn at that exact spot (or at least they were when I was in the region.) But the horn is not like in the rural areas where they rattle the windows - it was loud but earbuds would cover it.
(coincidentally, I would bike on Valley Rd. parallel to the train at that very spot, so I am familiar.)

This is kind of smaller scale, but the trend has been kind of similar between Will Smith and Michael Jackson. Go back 20 years and Smith looked like a normal dude. Lately in his movies he has been getting that smooth skin look that makes me think of de-aging. Tom Cruise does it better in his movies. Kind of also lends an androgynous look.

Coincidentally, I just finished watching a video of Matt Walsh roasting polyamory TikToks. All the comments I've read so far are about how people the commenters knew who were in those relationships were actually miserable or how they dabbled in it in the past and how awful it was. There were horrible outcomes - divorces, traumatized kids.

But don't worry, polyamory is cool. It's not hurting anybody, right?

And why bother getting married? Just be single and sleep around. But they want the benefits of marriage without the commitment.

And then another video came out showing her laughing at something Chris Rock said soon after the slap, related to the slap, I think. Then she released a statement about something something a time for healing without even acknowledging his existence.

I don't think Will is gonna ever win that competition. Rock didn't looked phased at all. More shocked he did it.

I agree. He showed class and composure in a very unexpected awkward situation. And he refrained from pressing charges, which I think was the right thing to do. It was just an effeminate embarrassing slap, and not pressing charges doesn't add fuel to the fire. The focus will continue to be on the hapless Will Smith.

320 305 I should note I don't say that as a gloat. I like Jonah. I found this place because of the Corner. I hate what events have turned him into or revealed him to be. I think that's probably what VDH refers to when he speaks of Ace's cruelty. He's a relentless mirror, and he won't allow Jonah to look away (and he can't- i.e. his nonsensical tweet in which he responds and takes the bait while stating he isn't). He knows what he is, and that's broken him. Ace, like the dread pirate Robert's, left him that one perfect ear (Twitter) and he can't not listen.

That is always the case when rabies is suspected, and it is always suspected when the animal does weird stuff like biting people during the day. Rabies is very serious, and is endemic in the DC region (I think the raccoons all have it.)
