I just returned from another photography workshop at Iceland where we've been visiting some spots off the beaten path as well.

This shot was taken at one of my overall favorite locations in the North of Landmannalaugar.

Sugar gliders were popular yesterday, so here are some babies. Might be the younger versions of the sugar glider paratroopers we saw yesterday.

Oh, here's a description of a sugar glider:

The sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small, omnivorous, arboreal, and nocturnal gliding possum belonging to the marsupial infraclass. The common name refers to its predilection for sugary foods such as sap and nectar and its ability to glide through the air, much like a flying squirrel. They have very similar habits and appearance to the flying squirrel, despite not being closely related--an example of convergent evolution. The scientific name, Petaurus breviceps, translates from Latin as "short-headed rope-dancer", a reference to their canopy acrobatics.

Many years ago had a neighbor whose toddler kid was scratched by their cat -- deep cut to the thigh -- and it was a really bad infection, he was hospitalized, they were thinking of possibly amputation (?). Very bad.

The other is that those of us who follow the news really closely, know that every last person in American public life is horrendously corrupt, like staggeringly corrupt, that they commit serious felony crimes on a daily basis, and that they never, ever get held to account. Why remember stories that ultimately don't matter?

141 In Iceland, you don't *have* to name your child from an approved list, you just can't name them something that hasn't been used before, unless it's approved by Mannanafnanefnd (Naming Committee).

The laws they follow in their ruling basically say:

The name can not cause the named any harm or trouble.

Boys must be named boy-names and girls must be named girl-names. Basically, you should be able to tell a person's gender by their name.

The name must follow Icelandic grammar rules and alterations.

This stems from a 1996 law, which many apparently feel is now outdated.

Actually lots of countries/cultures formally limit names. I'm agnostic on the matter, though lean a bit towards the restriction side.

But then we'd lose the Lookout Masuku (one of my favorite independence-period Zimbabwean names, and there were many), and such like. Brazil goes in for cool unusual or classic or historic first names (Ulysses - you oughta hear how that's pronounced in Portuguese - Achilles, Jefferson, Washington, Roosevelt, etc). Part of that is rebellion against the sameness of Brazilian names (seems half the country is either Joao or Maria). Also the reason for nicknames ("Pele" was Edson de Nascimento, which really isn't that common, but most of the stars whose nicknames you've heard are named Joao).

Uh, at one point of my career I was in charge of Communications for SUBPAC, the guy who would be in the link of the chain to end the world. Being under THAT stress turned my hair grey at 25....

So, yeah.... being able to talk down a Nuc Sub Driver who was CONVINCED his equipment was not broken... but ours was (even though we could talk to every other sub?).... taught me patience.
