THE MORNING RANT: Solomon Islands Welcomes Chinese Navy To South Pacific; North Carolina Announces Incentives For Vietnamese Unicorn Factory EV Factory

*****

China’s South Pacific Hegemony Keeps Growing

About six weeks ago I wrote about the South Pacific nation of Kiribati not only aligning with China, but also allowing China to build an airstrip that is closer to Hawaii than California is to Hawaii.

Well, more bad news, China is continuing to expand its control over the South Pacific. Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia are about to have Chinese naval ships docking in their neighborhood.

Solomon Islands inks security deal with China, ignoring Australian protests

Solomon Islands has initialed a security deal with Beijing, paving the way for China to take its first major stake in the Pacific and testing Australia’s century-long influence over the region.

The Solomon Islands are just to the east of New Guinea, and only 1,100 miles to the northeast of Australia. That’s about the same distance as Los Angeles to Seattle – not a significant nautical distance.

If finalised, the draft agreement would allow Chinese navy ships and defence forces to be based in Solomon Islands to protect billions of dollars in Chinese infrastructure investment in the developing country.

Take a look at the map below. With the waters of Kiribati and the Solomon Islands now subject to Chinese military control, China can be as dominant in the South Pacific as it wants to be.

Solomon Islands - Kiribati map.JPG

Lieutenant General Greg Bilton, the Australian Defence Force’s Chief of Joint Operations, told reporters in Canberra on Thursday that any stationing of Chinese navy vessels in the Pacific nation would “change the calculus” for Australia’s defence forces.

Changing the calculus doesn’t change the fact that Australia’s Navy is highly distracted by enforcing the culture war.

“Members of the Australian Defence Force have been told to use the term partner instead of husband or wife, and ask colleagues, ‘what is your pronoun?’”

…as is the US Navy.

US Navy Removes Gendered Pronouns From Its Ethos [Post Millenial 10/22/2020]

The Navy has now removed gendered words including "brotherhood" and "man" from its official SEAL ethos—changing them to "citizen" and "warrior" instead.

The US Navy has also had an awful run of mishaps and collisions the past few years. This rather significant story somehow didn’t receive much attention a few months ago.

How could the USS Connecticut sub crash into an undersea mountain? [Navy Times – 11/03/2021]

How could a $3 billion Seawolf-class boat, considered one of the Navy’s most formidable and advanced, crash into an undersea landmass?

The Navy has yet to explain what sort of damage the secretive sub sustained, but it was enough to force the ship to surface and limp back to Guam for repairs.

The Japan-based U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement last week that it is determining whether anyone will face disciplinary action for the mishap.

I am deeply concerned that a military confrontation with China in the Pacific Ocean is not too far over the horizon. I am also deeply afraid that we will not be prepared for it.

North Carolina Throws $1.2 Billion At Proposed Vietnamese EV Factory

Just 10 days ago I wrote about all the collapsing electric vehicle makers that fleeced investors with crazy promises regarding production volume and consumer demand. Some are still struggling to bring their very first car to market.

But there is an infinite supply of suckers who just want to believe in EV fairy tales. The latest is an EV startup, Vinfast, from Vietnam. It has seduced the usual collection of gullible elected officials, including North Carolina governor Roy Cooper.

Incentives package worth $1.2 billion draws electric car plant to NC [Richmond Observer – 03/31/2022]

Don’t worry, you regular investors have the opportunity to lose money too.

Vingroup plans U.S. IPO for automaking arm in late 2022 [Reuters – 12/04/2021]

Vinfast only built its first gas-powered car in 2019, in Vietnam.

I have known plenty of people who got the auto dealer bug. They were desperate to own a car dealership, and kept pinning their hopes - and upfront investments - on foreign manufacturers who were promising to bring their cars to the USA.

Some like Daewoo did briefly arrive in the USA before failing. Others like Chery and Crosslander just kept pushing their arrival back another couple of years, while never actually making it here. And none of them were startups trying to open all-new factories. They were actual car manufacturers with functioning plants, just struggling to make their existing cars street-legal in the US.

If North Carolina wants to attract foreign companies to come build manufacturing plants in the Tar Heel State, I’d recommend they focus on something like Taiwanese microchip companies rather than Vietnamese unicorn hustlers.

Or, if they're willing to gamble on startups, gamble on *American* industrial startups. There are probably guys who would love to start a stamping plant but don't have the capital. I wouldn't like that approach much, either, but it would be better than hurling tax incentives and money at foreign entrepreneurs.

oh yeah, places like Chesapeake Bay and Southern Louisiana are naturally sinking basins (that's why rivers flow to them) Southern Louisiana especially is sinking at about a rate of 3 feet per century, which is why it's turning back into ocean. Now, back when we didn't try to stop the Mississippi from flooding every year, that used to add about 3 feet a century through flood deposits. But we've built all kinds of dams (like Three Rivers) to make things "Better" now, and stop all those nasty floods that used to happen every year.

A really interesting idea that has been around for a century has been to build a canal to the Mediterranean that could flood the Al Qattara depression. This huge new lake might just add enough moisture to the air to turn a lot of Egypt back into farmland rather than Sahara.

172 I guess the big question is if China invades Taiwan before or after the US midterm elections.

I lean to the Chinese invading Taiwan before the midterms. Biden could conceivably declare martial law and suspend elections--even though Lincoln during the Civil War and FDR during the existential struggle that was WWII did nothing of the sort. We're talking about Biden--more specifically Biden's handlers, who aren't bound by pesky conventions, traditions, or constitutional requirements.

What's kind of fascinating is that the M-3 Lee was used by the US Army, and a version using a British turret design was called the M-3 Grant and sold to the British government.

For several reasons, not the least of which were light armor, weak guns, and a very high profile, these were completely outmatched by the German Panzers and quickly replaced by the M-4.

Daewoo is GM now, I think. They're under the Chevy brand even in Korea. Daewoo Motors had a joint venture with GM, which is how their cars came to America (like Geo before it). Daewoo was one of the larger blowups during the Asian Financial Crisis because of relatively reckless management and gross over extension of risk exposure. That conglomerate broke up in the aftermath and IIRC, GM ended up controlling Daewoo Motors.

That's all from memory, though, so salt is advised.

296 MrBallen shares a story from 2014 out of Nigeria.
https://youtu.be/JT3y8ZTgrtY

In Nigeria, there's still a substantial amount of people who believe local "magicians" are powerful. The most powerful spells they sell are made of human body parts. That creates a market for human body parts.

A supplier of those human body parts was discovered when a local "okada" was kidnapped. An okada is an independent motorcycle taxi driver. There are a lot of them, but they're close knit. When this okada was kidnapped, his disappearance was noticed and they called him on his personal cell. The okada had a business cell and a personal cell. The kidnappers took one, but not both. The okada was able to describe his location well enough that a posse of 40 okadas were able to find the general area.

When they arrived, they were fired upon. They scattered, but came back in even greater numbers. They found a warehouse with live people who had body parts hacked off them.

Turns out, locals had complained to the local cops about hearing screaming from this location every night, but the cops refused to investigate and told the locals to fuck off (probably dirty cops).

306 When they arrived, they were fired upon. They scattered, but came back in even greater numbers. They found a warehouse with live people who had body parts hacked off them.

Turns out, locals had complained to the local cops about hearing screaming from this location every night, but the cops refused to investigate and told the locals to fuck off (probably dirty cops).

308 The reports of screaming dated back 10 YEARS.

Unfortunately, the okada was never found. The police bulldozed the warehouse but didn't investigate further. One person was found on site with a pocket full of human tongues and sim cards. The crowd beat him to death.

Absolutely insane story.

Speaking of cars. I just got a cx 5. Nice ride, slightly smaller cargo area, slightly more space in second row. I wanted a rav 4 but the wait for one with a sunroof was like 9 months. They had a Cx5 I liked on the lot. (I had two rav's in a row, last one for 16 years.) The cx5 has a high compression engine, cylinder cancelling (so I am a little leery of it) torque vectoring awd. Mileage 24 and 30 advertised. Getting 29 combined actual.

333 Me, reading this, and my first reaction isn't to worry about Chinese military presence in the Solomon Islands in terms of military impact, but rather environmental.

The Chinese are absolutely fucking filthy in the way they do things. Fisheries totally eradicated, pollution, garbage, smoke, smog, etc. Their environmental laws are non-existent, and their give-a-shit when it comes to following international norms on this sort of thing doesn't even register.

I'm not really worried about our capacity to push them out of the Solomons if it came to actual war. I'm worried about cleaning up the mess the filthy bastards are going to leave behind.

Rented a car at Love Field a few years ago, driving to the northern suburbs, going down Preston Road the entire front bumper fell off and I drove over it. I put it in the back seat and drove back to Hertz. I wound up paying for it because I didn't get the insurance from them and I didn't carry collision on my car. Lesson learned there.

339 The naval academy reinstated celestial navigation training in 2015, BUT THAT WON'T STOP US.

If China does nothing overt at all, they're still going to seriously foul the Pacific. Ask any Somalian: after a Chinese factory ship passes, the ocean is empty. They practice a no-holds-barred, take no prisoners form of fishery, and do not comply with any international quota.

It is their way.

342 Joke around, but this is a complete disaster. The US and any allies just lost military control of the South Pacific.

The CCP will do what it typically does---end up taking the islands in payment for unpaid debts---and they will OWN the South Pacific. It's just a matter of time.

My late father fought in the Solomons 80 years ago with distinction, and I'm glad he is no longer around to see this.
