I'd Rather Have A Bottle In Front Of Me Than A Frontal Lobe-ONT

Oh lord, I'm old. This makes me laugh, but it makes me laugh in a kind of horrified self deprecation. Not only do I identify with this, but I've lived it, except in my case it was Wham! Or Culture Club or something like that. Imagine Dragons? Isn't that what kids listen to?

Keen Political Instincts

Romney suggests cutting retirement benefits for younger Americans

Hey, that's a good idea. Campaign on taking stuff away from people. That should go over well.

Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney has addressed the vexing question of how the US copes with its ageing population, suggesting that retirement benefits may have to be cut for younger Americans.

In comments to the Senate budget committee on Wednesday, the Republican senator from Utah said that the spiraling costs of retirement programs had to be tackled to bring national debt under control. Romney raised the politically controversial idea of cutting benefits, but only for younger generations before they reach retirement age.

“For younger people coming along, we got to be able to find a way to balance these programs or we’re gonna find ourselves in a heap of trouble,” he said. He added that he was not in favour of raising taxes as a way of balancing the books, but was open to adjusting “long-term benefits not for current retirees”.

Look, don't get me wrong. I can't believe that I'm typing this, but Mitt is right. The whole thing is going to collapse at some point. The thing is, I think it is impossible for anyone to reform it. It can't be done. It's too large, and too many people feel that they have the “right” to “their money” that they put into SS. It's political suicide to propose cutting SS or Medicare, however.

There is one way that it might possibly work. Pick an age, say, 45. Everyone over 45 gets exactly the same benefits they've been promised. Everyone under 45 will get no SS benefits (and honestly, few of them expect any), but we will also stop taking the withholding tax for SS from their paychecks. It might work, I have no idea of how the numbers look, but it'll never happen. Ain't no way govt is going to give up access to one thin dime of your money. Not happening, no way, no how.

Puck!

Well, the NHL season is in the home stretch to the Stanley Cup Playoff, and Daily Faceoff takes a look at What are the common ingredients in recent Stanley Cup champion teams?

Over the past decade, they identified the following:

So if we extract all the strongly correlated characteristics of recent Cup champs, we get a team that:
– Is among the heaviest in the NHL
– Has at least one top-10 scorer
– Has a top-10 goalie
– Ranks among the league’s best in CF%
– Has a great penalty kill
– Has at least one player with a Stanley Cup ring
– Made at least one trade-deadline move
Let’s get literal and see which teams, if any, meet all these criteria.

Care to guess which NHL team meets all of these criteria? Place your guess in the comments.

Answer (highlight to see): The Calgary Flames, baby! Stanley Cup here we come!

French Fighter Jet Joy Ride Goes Très, Très Wrong

He didn't want a joy ride in a Rafele. To each his own, but that's the part that gets me. His friends got him this incredible, bucket list type ride, and he didn't want it. Well, seeing how it turned out, maybe I get why. Me? I'd be all over that like white on rice.

The fighter pilot, being a fighter pilot, probably thought he was taking it easy as he pulled into a 47-degree climb and generated a 3.7-g load. (Which, incidentally, was also beyond the doctor-ordered limit of 3 g's.) On the climb, both pilot and passenger were crushed down into the seat. But when the plane started to level off, things got real panicky in the rear seat, as a negative 0.67-g load caused the ill-buckled passenger to feel like he was about to fly out of the cockpit. Which, shortly thereafter, he did.

Apparently the quick and dirty safety briefing failed to properly emphasize the fact that the black-and-yellow striped loop in the middle of the seat, between his legs, was not a grab handle but the trigger for the ejection seat. The good doctor's g-load recommendations were surely exceeded as pyrotechnics blasted a hole in the canopy and rocket motors fired the seat and its terrified denizen out into the slipstream high above the French countryside.

Read the whole article. Honestly, the whole ride sounds like it was approached in a very slipshod manner, but I still think it would be cool af.

What's On TV?

The True North Strong And Flee

Number of people who left Canada in the 4th annual quarter at almost 50-year high

Seems Trudeau's bully boy tactics are not sitting well with many of those who have the means to avoid them. Gingy is from Canada, and today she saw a car with an Alberta plate and went over to chat with them. Despite the fact that they were from the wrong part of Alberta (Wullert..er, Edmonton. * spit *), they actually agreed with Gingy when she informed them that she didn't think she would ever go back. Now, Gingy is a US citizen and has been here for 20 years and not 2 months like those people, but it's interesting that the thought was there.

Spoiler: The Curse Was “Poopyhead”

Ancient Hebrew curse tablet found by Katy archaeologist could be proof of older Bible timeline

I'll let you read the article, but what's interesting here is that this text would be proof of a written language and a distinct Hebrew people concurrent with the events of Exodus, which means that the events in the Torah might be contemporary accounts, and not transcripts of oral history written down many, many centuries after the events in question.

Musical Interlude

Not a musical interlude this evening. How about a dirty joke interlude?

Nothing too bad at the link, but obvious NSFW warning. What I find amusing is the reaction some people have to older folks laughing at the jokes. “OMG! Grandma is laughing at a dirty joke! Teehee!” Hate to break it to you, but grandma is a human being, and she had an entire life before you came on the scene, including sneaking smokes, getting drunk, having sex, and, yes, laughing at dirty jokes. People are people, and they always have been. Know those brilliant white classical statues from ancient Rome? Yeah, back when they were carved they were painted with pubic hair and genitalia. People are people. Penis (heehee!).

Wretched Hive Of Scum And Villany

Rep. Madison Cawthorn said he was invited to an orgy by people he "looked up to" in Washington.

Noting how he is significantly younger than his peers in the Capitol — whose "average age is probably 60 or 70" — Cawthorn said: "I look at a lot of these people, a lot of them that I've looked up to through my life — I've always paid attention to politics — guys, that, then all of a sudden you get invited to, 'Oh hey we're going to have a sexual get together at one of our homes, you should come."

"'What did you just ask me to come to?' And then you realize they're asking you to come to an orgy," Cawthorn added the 26-year-old.

That won't work because the monies being paid in by those working are given immediately to those collecting. If you stop taking money from those 45 and younger, you've stopped the ponzi scheme, and the beneficiaries won't get that money. The SS fund will liquidate the "bonds" it has on hand, and force the general fund to pay the benefits -- until the "bonds" run out. Then, the beneficiaries would see their benefits cut.

FDR did a hell of a job making social security.

Of the two, Medicare is the bigger problem, for now.

There's already a re-alignment in retirement benefits occurring right now. The university where I work has moved from a "defined benefit" plan to a "defined contribution" plan. Folks who were hired after a certain date only get the DC plan. Folks like me who were hired before that date get both a DB and DC plan...

34 Romney suggests cutting retirement benefits for younger Americans.

He is the definition - quite literally - of why jokes about Boomers are made. The man has never produced anything in his lifetime. His greatest accomplishment, besides being the spawn of a governor, was being at the head of a company that ate other companies. He could only do that because, like everything else the Boomers enjoyed, he had the good fortune to be born right before the peak of American Wealth - and he thus got to profit from the first of the decline.

And now ? He wants to continue to rob from generations not yet born, to keep his generational party going on just a little bit more.

112 The very first recipient of Social Security Retirement benefit payouts was a woman who paid into the system for 3 years, retired, and then received her monthly payment for another 28 years. She used up all the $$$ she'd paid into the system with the first 6 payments.

Posted by: Sharkman at March 31, 2022 10:21 PM (xpV7z)

113 Yes. That's exactly what you would have to do. Isn't it time we put an end to the "Current payees are funding the system" myth? The government completely broke, and has been for decades. There is no "lock box". There is no fiscal reality. There is no money. Nothing changes that.
Posted by: Weirddave at March 31, 2022 10:12 PM (GpUUo)
--

There are ways of reforming the system before that. Means test social security to reduce payment of benefits on the back end. On the front end, extend the retirement age again until the actuarial tables work (the average life expectancy is the year that you can first claim benefits) and raise taxes.

But that's conventional thinking. Given the wizards that we currently have as a government, I'd expect that they'd concoct a scheme whereby the Federal Reserve would somehow directly monetize the social security shortfall. The benefits get paid, and we ride the inflation dragon all the way into a currency collapse.

First, quit lying to people. Money going in goes right out. You cannot tax your way out

Treat it like welfare. Means test for benefits, fund from general revenue. Get rid of the payroll taxes and increase tax rates. Cont.

135 this text would be proof of a written language and a distinct Hebrew people concurrent with the events of Exodus, which means that the events in the Torah might be contemporary accounts, and not transcripts of oral history written down many, many centuries after the events in question.

Yep. Every time the skeptics ("scholars") say events in the Bible did not happen as recorded therein, evidence turns up to show they're wrong. One example I've heard is the "scholars" said King David didn't really exist. He was just a mythical figure like our Superman. Well, then archaeology unearths some artifacts referring to "the House of David" that proved David was an actual person.

Night all. My left eye is pretty banged up from cataract surgery yesterday. My ophthalmologist had hell's own time getting the old, gunky lens out. But both eyes are done now. In about five weeks, she'll be able to write me a prescription to cover my godawful astigmatism. I cannot believe how the cataracts distorted my color perception the past few years.

@Revenant, I think they will expand the back door means testing by making more of the benefits taxable and probably raising premiums on all the parts of Medicare other than A. Weight more of the benefit to discourage people from retiring at 65 and staying in the workforce longer. Fiddle with the escalator formula. There are tweaks that they can do within the existing system.

Except I expect the house of cards to completely collapse within 5 to 10 years and means testing reducing SS for "the rich" doesn't solve the issue of the deep state pushing way too many people to be helpless and need SSDI w/o ever working.

355 A long time ago, I suggested a hybrid of the Social Security solution mentioned above. The SS "tax" is roughly 6%. For people between certain ages, say 30-45, allow them to keep 3% of that, and invest it how they choose. Halve their SS benefit expectations. Below 30, the amount can be further reduced. Above 45, they (we, now...I was 30 when I proposed this to my Congress critter) pay full and get full.

They want that slush fund, though. It's not about actual SECURITY for people. It's about favors and grift.

SSDI is denying people with mental illness right now, specifically vets. Honestly, Pooky should have been on it five years ago, but he was trying to do "the right thing" by working full-time while his psychosis was starting to manifest. Now we're playing catch-up while the SSDI people deal with COVID backlog (or at least, that's the current excuse). Pooky probably *could* work, but then he'd snap and murder his coworkers, which would cost the government taxpayers and people paying into SS.

Felt weird for a song from about 1980 to be paired first with one from about 1995, then with one from about 1970.

413 I used to live where I could go to the EAA Airventure every year. I have been in a B-17, a Lancaster, the B-29, and even the Spanish CASA Heinkel 111 before it crashed. And a B-52. Military aircraft are designed for reasonably young and fit men to be in and comfort space isn't really a priority at all. Plus on the WW2 stuff especially early war they needed to fit a lot of guys in to physically operate stuff. Once they got past the first generation jets the technology got really, really complicated which is why there are precious few private warbirds newer than F-86s. Very hard to maintain and\or restore those.

That was a deliberate design philosophy the Japanese had. It was their attempt to fudge their deficiency in high power engine design and ability to build large numbers of planes. Light weight meant more range and better performance so they could beat the early Allied planes and use fewer airplanes to cover larger areas. Once the Allies built larger numbers of planes that could perform as well while also having strength, the Japanese were pretty much screwed. Of course, the whole Pacific War for the Japanese was like playing chess where your opponent gets new pieces every turn and you don't. If you don't win fast, you aren't going to. FDR engineered the whole thing by cutting off their oil and steel unless they left China. Basically they could just give up trying to be a power without fighting, or they could take the longshot. They took the longshot.

But their materials engineering was still weak, with inconsistent steels, hardening & tempering bearings, cylinder sleeves, valve seats, bearings & races. Was all.. kinda maybe!

And yeah. FDR finagled that war pretty much like the left is now horny for Nukerania. All the Galveston Island homes that had "Hate Has No Home Here" signs, are replete now with Gold & Blue and all other manner of Ukrania cheerleading. But then, (d) has always been the WarStarting party.

453 Seemed like the Japanese figured (hoped) the US would just give up rather than fight back. Despite the "Man In The High Castle" stuff even the Japanese knew that they could never conquer the United States and MAKE us stop. It wasn't until a while after WW2 once nuclear weapons and missiles were put into service that the distances made the US mostly impregnable. There weren't even bombers that could fly intercontinental conventional bombing missions. And the US was mostly physically selfsufficient.

By the end of the war, the best Japanese planes were just about caught up with the Helical and Mustang. Of course, we had better planes than those two a few months away and maybe a year out from having first gen jet fighters. The Germans were a little ahead at the end as far as prototypes but as was always their problem they didn't have the resources or manufacturing capabilities to make enough for it to make a difference.

465 Cutoff of scrap and then oil to Japan was based on Japanese behavior (big things, over years), wasn't capricious or arbitrary. No Manchukuo, no China war, no Indochina move, I doubt you'd have seen any special trade policies towards Japan.

And yes I think 2 flying B-29s in the US. FiFi, and Doc. Have been aboard both (on the ground ..... wouldn't fork out the $$$ to fly on them).

And back in the early 80s, to continue the ejection seat theme, I recall that in Zimbabwe a similar incident occurred. High-ranking official was given a ride in the British Aerospace equivalent of an Alpha Jet, forget the name of the model, small trainer/Third World general purpose aircraft. He freaked out and ejected himself and the pilot. Recall this was a reliable inside story that was kept quiet for obvious reasons, but it might have been wrong/apocryphal.

And impossible to imagine a "skimpy" safety briefing on flying in an ejection seat-equipped aircraft. Once was lucky to go up in one and the briefing/training for both on-ground escape (fire) and ejection seat use was extensive.

466 I have always loved the evolution of the Bf-109 and Spitfire. Amazing how those two 35-36 designs were tweaked and tweaked for a decade so that by the end of the war they were 30% faster and much more heavily armed and still close to being as good as anything while still having the same basic airframe.

469 To those interested in Japan's "decision" to start the war, highly recommend "Japan 1941" by Eri Hotta, female Japanese historian. The dysfunction and wrong person/wrong place/wrong time cascade is stupefying. Systemic failure.

And she was mostly writing about the war with us. Most the same pathologies were at work in the non-decisions (in our sense of them, political authorities making the call) on Manchukuo, and the China war, two debacles that led right into the final, catastrophic one.

For the flash of a moment there, he was as close as a man of our times might get, so, almost yes.

Similar, standing amongst the rows of markers at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery on Point Loma, San Diego, CA. Overlooking San Diego Bay, the Ballast Point Submarine Base, and beyond that, North Island NAS and the 32nd St. Naval Base.

There with well over a hundred years of ships, campaigns, battles, losses, victories. Laid often with their spouses of years, it is Hallowed Ground, indeed. I'd be honored to have my ashes cast upon the wind, there.

Well, he took his plane down with him. I have part of his memoir, maybe 40 pages. Fascinating reading. It's first draft, typewritten pages. I can see in him things that I deal with when writing, like disgraphia. It's choppy, jumping from place to place. Like I said, first draft stuff. He worked for the government after the war in aviation before he died of brain cancer in the 50s. Mom says he had written a books worth of memoirs, but most of it was destroyed after he died along with the contents of his office(classified stuff, and they just shredded everything that was on paper). I've got a small piece. Wish I had it all.

The vets of WWI weren't big on talking about their war experiences, either, and WWI was a real meat grinder. The filmed bits that I've seem of guys suffering from shell shock in WWI leave me speechless. We simply can't imagine the carnage of that war today with thousands of dead in a couple of hours, week after week. The horrors of WWII have overshadowed what the WWI men went through, to our detriment. But they seem to be getting their rightful due after 100 years. But going over the top? I can't imagine the thoughts of a soldier doing that though I would think they are akin to the men in Pickett's Charge: I am fucked!

Suppose Trump says that Putin is smart. Roll out Romney to criticize Trump for taking the side of our enemy. Suppose Republicans are making inroads with younger voters. Roll out Romney to suggest we cut benefits to younger voters.

The economics of this position might make sense to Romney's putative side in the long term, but the rhetoric of the position makes more sense short term for our enemies. In power politics it is the short term that matters because once our enemies have power, there is no long term for us.

I think if enough PBYs had survived in restorable condition into the era of the tremendous wealth explosion (80s and beyond), there'd be enough people with the $$$ and excellent taste to have converted more.

Seaplanes are the top of the aircraft buff's dream list, PBYs would be above that. (I'll settle for a Grumman Mallard myself - or a Goose or a Widgeon, if that's all that is available)

When the Canadians went westward, the first to go were the Mounties. So law and order went first. In the American west, law and order came second. That's why so many view Canadians as being 'nice' while Americans are looked at askance as being reckless cowboys. In a way, it makes sense. I'm also sure our Hollywood westerns, even of yesteryear in the era of good films, has a lot to do with the nasty 'violent American cowboy' perception.

There is actually method to sexagesimal madness. The ancients were not dumb. 60 is a type of number dubbed a "superior highly composite number". You can look up the precise definition of that, but it basically means the number has a shit ton of divisors for its size, and some other properties.

These properties make them ideal for bases. 360, a multiple of 60 is also such a number. Dividing the circle into 360 parts, and basing time on factors of 60 were not just some arbitrary choice.

The ancients knew what they were doing.

Well, we divide an hour into 60 minutes. So I guess some of that ancient 'smarts' stuck.

600 Seaplanes are the top of the aircraft buff's dream list, PBYs would be above that. (I'll settle for a Grumman Mallard myself - or a Goose or a Widgeon, if that's all that is available)

I rode a Mallard (then a scheduled airliner) from Vancouver, B.C. to Tahsis, B.C. in the 1970's. Took off from the runway at YVR, landed in Tahsis Inlet, and motored up a ramp onto the land.

601 When the Canadians went westward, the first to go were the Mounties.

Well, the fur traders were the first to go west, as early as the late 1600's. And there were explorers and prospectors, too. But the Mounties did indeed predate the big influx of farmers and ranchers.

I think it's simpler than that. Americans broke away from the crown, we demanded a concept of government where the government is owned by the people: the citizen. Loyalist fled north to Canada, they still viewed themselves as subjects of a monarchy, owned by the crown: a subject.

Subjects are by nature going to be more polite, their prosperity is tied to the benevolence of the king. Citizens, by their nature, are going to more "reckless", their lot is to demand that the government meld itself to their needs.

I'm an American, I prefer the later. But that doesn't mean I don't understand the former. And honestly, politics down here have been forcing us more and more into the role of subject

Smart move on your part. My in-laws born and bred South Shore Chicagoans, left about the same time for AZ.

They had some good yrs there. We just lost both of them last year, she was 87, passed last March. Jerry hung in there, but he died Oct. 31, at 90.

They really did enjoy moving from Chicago to AZ. For us, I'm not thinking so much. Phoenix is a huge metropolis I'm not going to deal w/ in my old age.

612 I kinda like the bottom pic. Yeah, it's pretentious, but not ostentatiously pretentious.

It could be the entrance to an upscale Motel 6.

617 Weirddave, yes, that's true, too, about being subjects dependent upon the good graces of royalty. We were rebels in the 1770s, but unfortunately that word has become verboten in that context thanks to our Civil War. Being a rebel used to be good here, but now with wokism and Big Government, it's a cardinal sin with no penitence allowed; they want us to bow and scape because they think of themselves as 'the new royalty. Fuck them! I wonder what James Dean would think of this crap?

The Aussies used to be considered a bit rough around the edges, being founded as a penal colony, but it seems as if they've become a dictatorship, too. Voluntarily giving up ones personal firearms will do that.

621 95% of American males (I'm kinda making these stats up, but not by much, memory being fallible) claim that they would take justice into their own hands if their wife/child/mother was molested/raped/killed by an evildoer.

5% actually do this. I've made the claim myself. But when it comes down to the nutcutting, very few do.

Like "Lia" Thomas. So to speak.

638 "Ancient Hebrew curse tablet found by Katy archaeologist could be proof of older Bible timeline"

I read the article a few times. I have a doctorate in Bible and Ancient Near East. That doesn't mean I know everything or are necessarily right. But I've learned enough and know enough to be convinced there are several problems with the article, particularly with statements by Stripling.

The Deuteronomic History is 600-300 BCE??? What reputable scholar claims this?

The inscription dates to 1500 BCE??? That strains credulity past the breaking point.

The evidence does not provide warrant for some of the conclusions Stripling claims.

Job is the oldest book of the Bible??? I know some very intelligent, well-educated scholars might say this, but that's not remotely a mainstream position. My dissertation was largely about the historical development of Biblical Hebrew, there's considerable debate on the date of Job (prose or poetic sections?), but the general consensus is it's early post-exilic.

639 Re: the social security thing - this is the #1 complaint that younger generations have about Boomers. Boomers had affordable housing, affordable college, the ability to support a family on one high school diploma, loyalty from the companies that they worked for and therefore the ability to spend an entire career at one employer, etc etc etc.

They've then done everything that they can to take all of that away from the younger generations, then call them "entitled" when they complain about that.

If you take my social security, after I've paid into it for nearly thirty fucking years? Fuck you, that's a line too far, I'm talking literal war.

640 Traditional herbal medicines are based on the use of natural remedies
like Herbs and Roots, no special food no lifestyle change to
permanently cure drug resistance diseases. Patients who use this
methods will definitely testify. Though not all are natural and may
contain heavy elements which the kidney finds difficult to filter and
excrete that is why I recommend Dr. Omola
Two years ago I was permanently cured of oral herpes by Dr Omola
Dr Omola herbs are hundred percent natural, no after effect and is
guaranteed many have testified to this.
