Daily Tech News 31 March 2022

Top Story

  • Repeat after me: We have a hot prospect expecting to close today but if you act right away...

Actually, this time I believe them, because (a) they provided details that were not to their advantage and cooled me down on this property, and (b) they didn't claim a hot prospect so much as a room temperature one.

Either way, bleah. I'll have my agent check out my top two alternates but I'm getting ready to activate Plan B.

  • I'm not sure there is a top story today. Well, the Washington Post says that some of the cryptographic signatures on the Laptop from Hell check out proving that the emails are from who they say they are and did in fact say what they say when they were sent, but we knew that 18 months ago.

Tech News

  • YouTube has added 100 free TV shows and over 1000 free movies. (Mashable)

Where are they? What are they? No-one knows. You can't browse the list; you can't search for them; and if I click the link to see even a sample of the TV shows I get a purple monkey error.

"It's personalised" says YouTube, which apparently translates to "fuck you".

Also, the small number of free movies I could find that are actually viewable in Australia are crap. But then so is Netflix.

  • Canada will ban sales of combustion engine cars by 2035. (Engadget)

Has Canada ever seen Canada? There is no country in the world that would benefit more from global warming or that is less suited to electric vehicles.

  • Phenylephrine is useless. (In the Pipeline)

On the one hand, it's not a precursor to meth. On the other hand, it does nothing. And there are many cheaper substances that fit both those roles.

  • QNAP again. (Bleeping Computer)

    Seriously?

Does it come back on automagically, or do you have to log in and all that?

Posted by: m at March 31, 2022 04:21 AM (nIvvp)

12 It comes back naturally. Sometimes it takes a while so I turn the 4G on, otherwise I can't refresh a page, or go to any links

13 This is AT&T DSL service to our house. The 4G is on my phone plan, but it's not unlimited so I always try to use the wifi.

Not a lot of options for internet without having cable or satellite here (by choice)

15 They make routers now that can take multiple ISP connections and you can set up priority for one over the other. I've been tempted to pair my houses cable internet with something like Starlink or Verizon (if they ever get it in my area).

I don't really need it, I just think it would be cool.

23 There is an axiom that goes something like, there are only two ways to get someone to do something. Persuade them, or force them.

Another axiom or whatever, our leftist and/or whatever betters start with their conclusion and then work backwards and try and make the "data" or whatever fit. Banning travel or some variant thereof - the internal combustion engine - energy policy I suppose, is the end goal, or complete control.

"Global warming" and all the related bullshit, is just a means to an end. A reason or justification, yet another in a long line of phony balogna lies and nonsense basically predicated on them stealing all yer shit and leaving you (perhaps) living in a lettuce box down by the river.

>>RPi would definitely be more efficient. Problem is finding a decent enclosure and power supply.

There are many ways to skin the cat but the cheapest most cost effective that I have found is a DeskPi pro case, this will allow you to turn the pi into a mini computer with all of the ports oriented toward the back, this case will allow you to install an ssd, I have a 128gb Samsung EVO installed in one, I also have a powered USB hub, attatched to it are (2) 2tb ssd, which are striped together to create an 4tb storage array and also an 4tb mechanical drive. The ssd array is rsynced to the mechanical drive via a cron job running in off hours.

You can size it up and down to suit your needs.

Once it's setup it's bullet proof, you can also set up Smartctl to alert you to drive issues.

Well, Washington state wants to ban them by 2030, in a bad case of oneupmanship or retardation, but I'm gonna hafta go with B.

Now, since the stupid writer just said Washington, it COULD be DC, and since the retard ratios are quite similar (though DC holds the edge just based on 2020 preezy voting %s)...

I really don't give a fuck. And if I wanted to give a cuck, well, Will Smith is available I hear.

Morning, y'all.

PS I was in a casino yesterday, and crossed paths with an obvious tourist, as he was hauling luggage. He decided to hail me with a bit of polite banter, I chatted back, and he declared "I have heard of the famous Southern hospitality and friendliness, and you have confirmed it."

Yeah, I just use OMV with standard mirrorring for two 6TB and two 3 TB drives. The SSD is for the OS only, which is probably overkill. But again, we're talking ten year old SATA speeds, which could definitely stand to be improved upon.

What we really need is to get ahold of the gubbmints Globull Warming computer forecasts and use them to predict the next 10 day accurate forecast. Even the next 5 day accurate forecast.

I'll take a "let me know about how much rain we will get tomorrow" accurate forecast.

54 It is quite a trick, if you think about it. America has maybe 500 years worth of high quality Coal. The US has been called "the Saudi Arabia" of Coal, because of the huge deposits. Plenty of petroleum, natural gas, hydroelectric potential. And then there's Nuclear, which America invented.

Think about that the next time you fill up your tank, or gain enough courage to open your electric Utility (sorry ... "energy provider") bill.

Every bit of this nonsense was, and is completely avoidable. Imposed upon us for no good reason other than to cause chaos.

Well, inflation is inherently the devaluation of the dollar.

If the Junta keeps f**king around and the US Dollar is no longer the reserve currency, that would be catastrophic as the world gives up it's dollars and the world would be awash in useless, unbacked greenbacks.

This may be part of the plan, I haven't quite figured out how the three steps to profit work out in this scenario.

I saw something about battery cars that they do piss poor with the battery heating the car.

Posted by: Bruce at March 31, 2022 06:24 AM

I wonder what the actual BTU/hour differential is between ICE heating and an electric system? I have a feeling it's huge and therefor the information will not be available.

I remember as a teenager being in a VW and it was cold as ice inside the car - even in that tiny interior.

According to the interwebs, Canada has roughly 25m cars, if they were changed over to Nissan leafs with their 24kwh batteries, you would need 600,000GW of additional power generation to support that.

The average nuclear plants generates round 3gw.

So, yep, there's a problem right off the bat without even talking about infrastructure and transmission.

Conclusion: They are insane and evil.

106 "Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?" Is a quote attributed to Henry Il about Thomas Becket. Archbishop of Canterbury, thus prompting four knights to kill Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. It is also a line in a play but not by Shakespeare as the play dates from the 20th century. But yes, Fauci is the priest of the religion of Covidism and it would be good if he went away-and no, I'm not endorsing his murder, only a wish that he be held accountable for what he's done.

127 Just once I'd like a socialist government, like the one in Canada to fully lay out a plan for whatever it is they want. In the case, only EVs by 2035. In it they would define, not just describe, how they were going to expand power capacity and the grid, how they they were going to make sure charging was available nationwide and what they were going to do with the old vehicles as they fleet was turned over. Oh, and the trivial detail of how much this would actually cost the country. Maybe that would wake the slumbering north up.

139 What the AGW cultists should do, if they weren't just plain hucksters and thought they were actually right, is a Kennedyesque Moonshot kind of stunt. Say, within X years, we will build a viable alternative to fossil fuel and nuclear power generation. Then put the world's best engineers and scientists in a laboratory somewhere and let them run amok.

They have no intention of doing anything productive though. At best, it's all a grift, and at worst, it's Great Reset by candlelight.

146 You know what would be better than banning ICE cars? 1-2 TW of new nuclear reactors. Remove regulatory red tape, add a review panel to adjudicate concerns for new plants before lawsuits are allowed to go to federal court. And do the same when (if) we get a viable fusion reactor.

_______________

It occurs to me that the McConnell/McCarthy duo would do anything possible to keep the Trump endorsed Republicans from being seated. The J6 committee has publicly said their intent is to "disqualify" anyone with ties to Trump as well. If this means ditching control of the House, they'd do it.

149 I believe by 2030 all school districts in NYS must buy only electric buses. Right now a heavy school bus would get about 30 miles on a charge. Rural routes are much longer than that. It might be a one way ride, with a charge to get the bus back to the school. Has any pol ever ridden a school bus in the winter on a dirt road in the middle of no where, NO
