CNN Is Already Planning Layoffs At Streaming "Service" CNN+;
To Raise Easy (?) Cash, CNN Will Turn Its First Half Hour of "Content" Into NFTs and Sell Them to Braindead Partisans

Chris Wallace's job might not be as secure as he'd hoped:

Charles Gasparino

@CGasparino

Breaking:

@CNNplus employees bracing for layoffs possibly as soon as May amid projections of lackluster sales of new streaming channel; CNN employees say new streaming channel could be merged into larger @discoveryplus as early as May unless subscriptions pick up 130 @FoxBusiness

Obviously they wouldn't fire a high-profile guy like Wallace, but if they're already planning layoffs, that means the "service" is not going to be around very long.

Or will it? CNN's new owners, Discovery, know full well that people aren't going to pay $5.99 to not watch a channel they're already not watching for free.

So they're already talking about "bundling" it in a package deal with channels people are willing to pay for. Like HBO.

On Tuesday CNN is introducing CNN+, a subscription streaming service that combines live news coverage, on-demand programming and interactive interviews.

CNN's goal is to establish closer relationships with news consumers -- the same way Netflix (NFLX) and HBO Max have done in entertainment.

It has hired hundreds of people and developed dozens of shows for this new platform. Analysts say it is the most ambitious streaming news venture to date in the United States.

"We are going to be the only global video-driven news subscription business," CNN chief digital officer and head of CNN+ Andrew Morse said in an interview.
On Tuesday CNN is introducing CNN+, a subscription streaming service that combines live news coverage, on-demand programming and interactive interviews.

The big three broadcast news divisions -- ABC, NBC and CBS -- have streaming channels that are free and ad-supported, but have far less content. MSNBC repurposes some of its programs on NBCUniversal's subscription service, Peacock, while Fox News sells a streamer that focuses on entertainment and right-wing talk, not news.

Oh, they focus on partisan chatter, unlike the pristine "news" channel CNN.

Right.

CNN+ is distinct from all of those. Still, the service faces headwinds, including looming management changes and outside skepticism about the service's prospects.

"News is additive. It's habit forming. But it's a hard sell for a standalone subscription service," said Julia Alexander, senior strategy analyst for Parrot Analytics, a firm that advises media companies.

Down the road, CNN+ may be bundled. But at launch it is a standalone product priced at $5.99 a month.

Wow, that shows some real confidence in CNN+ -- buy these other channels people actually want, and we'll throw in this Pile of Dogshit for free.

Which is CNN's tried-and-true business model -- they're only on cable at all because the cost of the channel is bundled into the cost of the channels people actually watch.

And: Is it really $5.99 per month?

No, it's not.

They're already "discounting" it at its real price, $2.99 per month. Which is still way too high.

Screenshot (1895).png

If you sign up now, you'll get CNN+ at half-price, which is still 5000% of what it's actually worth. And you'll lock in those savings for life.

So that's the real price. As anyone who's ever tried to cancel cable knows, cable companies will offer you the "teaser" rates, the "Try HBO for $4 per month (for six months)" rate, when you show you're serious about cancelling. And if you periodically call up to cancel, you can keep getting those teaser rates for a while.

Is CNN+ really going to turn away what few people are interested in the "service" at all if they demand the "50% off" rate instead of the "regular" $5.99 rate? No. This rate will be routinely offered to anyone.

The only people who will pay $5.99 a month to watch Chris Wallace and Don Lemon in a more casual "chat" situation are braindead partisan super-fans who just want to spend extra money to support CNN's brand of "journalism," like Noted Conservative Blogger AllahPundit.

Here's another way Noted Conservative Blogger AllahPundit can support his favorite "journalism" outfit: he can buy the NFTs of the first half our of CNN+'s "news" coverage.

For those of you who don't know what the hell NFTs are: Join the club. I don't know what the hell they are, either.

But what I say to pretend I know what they are is that an NFT is an unreproducable cryptographic code, or crypto fingerprint, that allows you take a digital object, like a digital photograph or a thirty second video of CNN+'s amazing programming, and stamp it with that code to make this one copy of the easily-copied digital artifact the "one real authorized copy."

And in theory, limiting the supply of something should increase its price. You can't sell a jpg image because they can be easily copied and reproduced. But of one jpg image has a stamp making it the one real jpg image, you can, in theory, sell that as a unique item.

And people are doing this now with digital "art," and people are "investing" in NFTs and flipping them, selling them to other people.

I don't want to spread FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt), but this NFT thing always seemed very very silly to me, and I have a strong feeling that the NFT market is about to collapse.

Or at least it will "right-size" to its true value.

Which is zero.

But then again, I chose against buying Bitcoin when it was like $600 per coin, because I thought that was way past the top of the market.

So anyway: What a perfect time for CNN to fleece its braindead partisan zombie viewers, selling them worthless digital vapor-trinkets.

CNN is marketing its CNN+ streaming debut as a "historic moment" for the company by selling the first seconds of its first live stream as a set of NFTs, CNN+ chief Andrew Morse said on Wednesday.

The NFTs, of which there will be 250, will feature the first 29 seconds of the first episode of 5 Things with Kate Bolduan, a daily morning show for CNN+ that marked the start of the streaming service's debut on Tuesday.

The NFTs will be available for purchase beginning on at 10 a.m. PT on March 30 via Vault by CNN, a separate NFT marketplace that sells digital collectibles of major moments in CNN's history, such as footage of Ted Turner launching CNN in 1980. At launch, each NFT featuring the first moment of Bolduan's live show will be sold at $50 each; users do not need to use crypto to purchase the tokens.

One good thing about NFTs:

Feminists are complaining that they're "anti-woman."

Because not enough men are handholding them and doing their research for them and giving them free NFTs just for being women.

In a prior thread on these some weeks / months back, I mentioned the theory that the new owners of CNN were going to load CNN+ up with toxic assets (like a "bad bank") and then fire everyone when the whole thing collapses.

Still think that's the likely outcome here.

I think Bill Gates just thinks investing in land is a good way to preserve his wealth. We way overthink motives for people doing shit. He has money, he invests in land.

Yeah, after a certain point it becomes difficult to handle money wisely. You can just put it into a bank but then its just slowly burning away from inflation. You can invest in more stocks but they're volatile and untrustworthy, especially as you look at the future of the economy. Land is almost always safe as an investment, even if things go very wrong.

87 I'm stoopid, what is NFT?
Posted by: Infidel at March 31, 2022 02:35 PM (ou23q)

NFT is non fungible token, which uses cryptography or some sort to make a unique sign in for online transactions. They generally are loaded on top of some sort of cryptocurrency. The original use was to be unique verifiers and to support crypto-contracts that would be automatic on completion, without third party monitoring.

It is an attempt to solve the problem of "how to you create lasting value in an endlessly reproducible world"

Like they said above, you can't sell a JPG, people don't pay for what they can get for free.

A big point most people don't realize about the Airports - CNN pays THEM for the right to run its programs on TV screens that CNN provides and which CNN has to maintain. The reason you never see any other channels is that no one else in the business is stupid enough to say "hey we will PAY to force people to watch us, that'll be profitable!!!"

but it does show that CNN is not a real "business" at all, just a political propaganda machine supported by some deep pockets.

Posted by: Earl Schlobodowicz at March 31, 2022 02:44 PM (P7Iz+)

90 The vast majority of "buyers" for NFT art are other sellers of NFT art. They basically trade their junk back and forth to each other. Ditto bitcoin. That's a more complicated issue because there are various models and deliberate confusion between bitcoin trading platforms and bitcoin itself. Many of the companies propping up bitcoin as a currency are also investing in trading platforms. So they are in essence propping up their own platforms. I don't trust them any more than I can throw them.

WB's execs apparently just grew to dislike Snyder, especially when his leadership of the DCEU just didn't make Marvel money. So, when he was becoming difficult with Justice League, demanding at least 3 hours of runtime and a follow through on his darker vision that critics didn't like very much, the pressure of the fights with the execs (combined with his daughter's suicide) just told him to fuck off, and WB rushed through to production.

I did do a post about canceled movies a while back. Jodorowksy's Dune was the centerpiece.

The only place I've seen that NFT's can be put to practical use (and are) is in that domain for the crypto industry. A BTC/ETH swap might be constructed as an NFT. That makes perfect sense.

The rest is just hype IMO.

297 Not at all. MBS have underlying securities which have underlying assets. They're risky as fuck and the valuations are shall we say suspect. But at least there is something real inside of an MBS.
---------------
Most of the Residential MBSs that were around back in the early 00s were based on future interest payments on mortgages that were financially suspect (subprime). They were worthless when most of the mortgages went underwater and were foreclosed (ie no more interest payments). A certain lender would bundle 100s of subprime loans, sell the derivative and use the proceeds to make more subprime loans, creating the unsustainable bubble.

Now of course I just worked the tax side, but had to review each offering and got to see how the sausage was made.

They dedicated a whole floor in their building in Houston to build a trading floor and outfitted it with the latest computer gear and a custom written trading software program. They must have spent 10s of millions. They even had a custom Harley that was all tricked out in the lobby off the elevator on the trading floor for some unknown reason.

Yeah largely because stocks were relatively new at that point and not many people understood how they worked, only that people were making money on stocks. For the wealthy and powerful that was attractive because it wasn't work you see, it was clever use of your money. Between that and inbreeding you got a pretty big, stupid bubble.

404 The housing bubble had a lot of complexities. But I don't buy the argument that the govt forced banks to do it as some social justice thing. Banks like always, look for the quick buck. And nothing quicker than packaging up some MBS and selling it to unsuspecting rubes at a 500% profit.

And the other side was home buyers who thought real estate can never go down in value so BUY BUY BUY!! But these people all became "victims" in the official narrative.

There is a book out called The Fiat Standard (which I have not read) that looks at how our Fiat money is created, and that is exactly how, it is like Bitcoin proof of work, however the proof of work in fiat comes afterwards as you pay it off.
Also, if you don't borrow, you lose because all your savings are being devalued by everyone else cashing in on getting loans that are made out of nothing.

And you are encouraged to get into debt and live on the edge of destruction if you can't make your payments.

Some of the raw recruits they have now are more seasoned and might be used in more important roles in the current invasion. IIRC most of the ones in the units fighting now were separated out from the invasion forces and used for support roles.

I have no idea what Enron was doing with that but I do know that at that time internet or cellular bandwidth was a severely restricted commodity. If they had some way to buy a guaranteed amount of access, divide it up, and sell the pieces for more than they paid, then it might have been a legit business model. Especially if they could sell the capacity for very short time increments.

Tallest among dwarves, I think the saying goes.
I don't think the USD will be selling 1:1 with the Guarani, but it is going to take a serious decrease by the time inflation catches up with the printing.
The problem is it is a global reserve and at some point governments may start looking for a reserve that can't be taken or that they can be blocked from using because they told Biden "no" If that happens the demand will drop against the volume, and that is the other source of inflation.

The first hyperinflationary collapse of a fiat money was the Yuan dynasty, because after exporting that inflation for years, in the end no one outside of China would accept and the supply outstripped demand. We may have started this preference cascade this month.

Posted by: Kindltot at March 31, 2022 03:34 PM (xhaym)

513 Again, the problem with the gold standard is that its value is no less arbitrary than the dollar in fiat. You've just removed the fiat one step, and there's not enough gold in the world to cover today's finances.

Everything's fiat if you go enough steps, but gold has the advantage that there's a finite amount, and it's a lot harder to cough up new gold than new paper dollars.

559 531 New law: Any visual form of news/entertainment that is bundled, must come with a cost breakdown for each bundled item. Consumers would then have the option of opting out of said items. Would be interesting to see the "value" of some of the entities. ESPN for example would drop from it's $7 price tag to 20 cents.

564 "The problem is it is a global reserve and at some point governments may start looking for a reserve that can't be taken or that they can be blocked from using because they told Biden "no"

That's not an argument I largely subscribe to. You have to be a big enough economic player to make that kind of move. You also have to hedge against the risk of making that move, because if things go South you're stuck without a chair. Running a petro based economy makes it hard enough to run an economy over time as you're tied to a single commodity, one that's just one invention away from being seriously devalued. You also have to think about what types of actions would get your reserves yanked. Do you really want to be in the club that launches artillery at civilians? I guess maybe some do but is that going to be your premise for moving off a stable reserve? Seems like a self defeating argument to me.

Not on a server. It's the same blockchain that everyone churns in their own system. The best explainer I've understood with regards to crypto is that it's like the old-time ticker tape broadcast. Everyone has the same ticker tape, but you can add a transaction to it. Same ticker, same tape, and there's no 'server' to crash.
