12 In modeling news have managed to assemble and paint both R-2800 C series engines for the B-26K.

You are not supposed to glue the alignment jig for the exhaust stacks to the back of the engine. Right... Use a little dab to hold it in place or every time you try to slide one of the individual exhaust stacks between cylinders and aft engine ring, the jig will fall off.

Hobby Boss does make a Douglas Invader in 1/32 scale but it has some serious issues like the engines are missing four cylinders each. One commentator said you would be better off making one from a mahogany block.

26 There was an amur leopard that was black like that - you could see the spots or whatever they're called in certain light/certain angles - at the zoo a few years ago. She had been raised in captivity and the curators said she was considered a no-go for breeding due to this.

Then, visiting again after The Great Idiocy was scaled back, she was gone, they said she'd been sent to some zoo in the Midwest and had bred. Anyway her coloration was quite freakish, sort of reverse albinism or something.

I have a cool prank idea, but it would take some money to pull off, because you'd have to rent a jumbo jet and a pilot.

Anyway, you take your buddy out drinking, and roofie his ass. When he comes to, he's in the pilot's seat, uniform, the works.

The "co-pilot's" all "Dammit, Jenkins!!! This is the third time this month you've passed out at the stick! There are hundreds of passengers on this plane. The next time this happens, I'm reporting it."

Back when the DC-10 had a camera for passengers to watch the throttles in the cockpit, one pilot had a gorilla arm push the throttles forward for takeoff. After take off, the copilot gave the pilot a banana.

Posted by: Eromero at March 29, 2022 08:03 PM (Xvdm5)

43 Cat-related. One bizarre thing is how they (zoos/curators) now pair up dogs with young cheetahs, as life companions. Cheetahs are so skittish (scaredy cats, literally) that pairing them up with dogs makes it much easier to work with them - they feel secure, if the dog is not upset or acting defensive, they relax.

And it's funny to see visitors walk up to the cheetah enclosure at the main zoo and gawk in surprise that next to the snoozing cheetah is a sleeping dog.

I like how simple and abbreviated it is. We've got a small bit of land I've been slowly clearing since the lockdown. It's a tremendous amount of work, and I've got modern tools like chainsaws and a pickup truck. Just getting the trees and stumps out of the way - much less procuring and transporting and laying the miles of riprap and other materials - would be a crazy amount of labor.

That and sea water, believe it or not. It slowly hardens and gets tougher over time, becoming even more survivable. I mean, they didn't do it on purpose, it was just easy to get seawater.

American engineering is about ten times cooler than Roman stuff, but won't last a tenth as long. Future civilizations will know our might from the foundations and remnants of highways, but the rest will be gone. Also, thanks to electronics, most of our culture and historical record will appear to have simply vanished from about twenty years ago, and they'll have to try and piece things together from odds and ends from there out.

I watched a documentary that was using satellite and IR imaging to find old settlements, which they'd go and scan and try to dig up. They were looking for evidence that the Vikings settled North America (they found some evidence of a failed settlement in Nova Scotia). More like they were making carbon steel and some stuff they didn't intend to add got into the mix and surprise! Steel that didn't rust as fast as stuff they'd been making. We'll never know, but it would be fascinating if we could learn how many useful things that come down to us from pre-history were accidental discoveries, how many were educated guesses, and how many were inspired ideas by a 20,000 years-ago equivalent of Einstein.

Maybe a lot of items came from inspired ideas by a small number of 170 IQ or Archimedes-type humans over the centuries, then were copied and passed along by neighboring tribes. The fabulous cave paintings we've discovered in European caves must have been done by a small handful of pre-historic Michaelangelos.

Iron smelting grew from the Hittites using Iron Oxide as a flux for purifiying Copper ore, and it went from there. By the time of the Battle of Kadesh, they were experimenting with smelting Iron, but the whole civilization collapsed with the end of the Eastern Med Bronze age.

The Vikings used bog iron, which was concretions of iron oxide deposited by bacterial action in bogs. It was the middle ages befre the Swedes found their Iron ore mountains and started doing Iron in a big way.

There were smart people but a lot of the development was cut and try and mistakes remembered.

OK. The BUORd torpedo development is the canonical case of not enough testing, and shutting up the combat users. The Navy has some big skeletons in the closet in WWII, and later.

Maybe there can be a preceding image prior to those. Maybe the slapper/slappee can represent two complimentary ideas in a sort of false dichotomy. I don't know. But I think the basic framework for a killer meme is sound.

255 The LCS (Littoral Combat Ships) were supposed to have a multi-mission module that more or less was interchangeable for a variety of missions... anti-submarine, anti-surface, routine patrol, drug interdiction, etc.

Those modules never made it.

And, the Freedom class... the "normal looking" boat suffers from chronic drive failures. It has a two engine design to propel the boat at very high speeds for it's size, but it doesn't work.

Something about regular diesel engines mated to jets... like a ski boat. A "coupling gear" that joins them doesn't work. Like having a transmission that's broke.
