"The rise in inflation has been much greater and more persistent than forecasters generally expected." Powell then recounted how the experts at the Federal Reserve consistently underestimated the increase in inflation. When the Fed met last June, he said, all the participants predicted that 2021 inflation would be significantly lower than it ultimately turned out to be. And then, when they met in December, they did it again. "Why have forecasts been so far off?" Powell asked. He attributed much of the current problem to the complex path of the COVID-19 pandemic, and especially to the fact that it has never gone completely away, despite the development of vaccines. The pandemic disrupted the balance of supply and demand in a way that has still not been fixed. ... Three years. That would be until early 2025. In between, we will have the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 presidential election. And that is the political consequence of Powell's speech.

This one is huge, and it's one of those "I'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me" situations. Putin has banned the export of fertilizer in retaliation to the sanctions. He may do the same with wheat. The planting disruption in Ukraine is probably going to be secondary to the problems with fertilizer supply. Russia and Canada produce most of the world's potash, and one of them is now offline due to sanctions and counter-sanction actions.
And it's likely already too late to stop it. Assume that Russia wins the war today, and Ukraine's government say it was all a historical mistake and they really were supposed to be part of Russia, and they love Russia, and they hate that the world is mean to Russia, and the world should love Russia, too. Then by Tuesday all sanctions are lifted. It won't matter.
It's nearly the planting season right now. Even before the sanctions, fertilizers were a problem and now it's a very very huge problem.

The food consequences are already a done deal, with or without our direct participation in the war, and honestly were already coming on account of fertilizer and energy issues.
A lot of people don't really understand the western prog stake in all of this; they don't (yet) want us in a direct war with Russia. What we have going on now is exactly what they wanted for a number of reasons, and it's going swimmingly for them.

Haven't we been hearing about severe shortages of this, that, and the other thing for over a year now? Remember last summer, when we were all assured nobody would get their Christmas and holiday deliveries? Other than the usual isolated shortages of certain toys or items, it didn't happen.

As with everything else connected to these festivities, good info is very hard to get, but I have seen at least references/claims that Russian forces are specifically not interfering in agricultural activities (why would they anyway?). Of course the disruption - people, fuel, supplies, normal life - in the wheat growing areas could still greatly reduce planting.
But I wonder if that food CEO or others actually have a good grip on what's actually going on on the ground.
Of course export/transport disruption could still result in drop in production hitting markets.

Pretty much exactly the reaction to my comments last summer that the supply shortages were being over-blown. I was right then. I'll be right now. And then, when the NEXT over-blown scare happens, and I again advise skepticism, the reaction will be the same.
So what's the timeline on this Thunderdome scenerio? At one point do we evaluate whether I am right or not? How many governments are you predicting will fall? How many country-wide food riots?

One thing that must be stressed is the reason we've gotten away with so much fiscal and monetary incontinence -- borrowing and spending financed by money printing is because the dollar is the world's reserve currency.
This allows us to "export" our inflation. If any regular country tried the shit we've been doing for the past 20 to 30 years, they'd be Venezuela or Zimbabwe.
What does the world get in return for the dollar reserve status? Economic, financial, and market stability for international trade. This is very important.
With our monetary incontinence, which started big time during the '08 crash, and went to Warp Speed during the Covid crap, we've been yanking the monetary stability leg out of the stool that props up the dollar reserve status.

Well part 1 of the position you're criticizing is merely that the West will see higher prices, not real shortages.
Part 2 is that the rate of overthrow in the third world will increase, which seems probable. You might not personally hear or care about such things, but it's not like it hasn't happened a good number of times in your life time and in the last decade.
I'd guess 3-5 states who were on the margins before in Africa and the Middle East get pushed over in the next decade that with a stabler global economy would not have.

The Fed has more choices now than it did in 1980. Interest will have to come up and that is going to have serious fiscal implications for the federal government, but it is not the Fed's only play. They spent the last 15 years building their balance sheet pretty hugely, and they own a tremendous number of assets. That asset base can be used to absorb a lot of money and take it out of the system. It can't remove everything they've dumped in, but they can probably pull a trillion dollars out if they do it carefully.
The downside to that will be the fall in asset prices (stocks and bonds) that will result. It will be like trying to thread a needle while strapped to the wing of an airplane just to keep the federal government afloat.

Exactly. If you recall, several years ago, as the ethanol incentives really rose, American farmers switched over to the "fuel" corn, which is not fit for human consumption (generally). Corn prices skyrocketed, leading to riots in Mexico. Good times.

And a problem with US providing so much "cheap" (at the time, very cheap) grains, is other nations depend on US, and don't prioritize their own production. "The Ugly American" drops in food and Africa becomes dependent on US.
In a sense, same thing when they (for example) donate used shoes to Africa. The African shoemaker can't compete, is put out of business. (a specific story I recall). So this "US must make policy so the world is guaranteed cheap food" is misguided, imo.
The West's dependence on US defense might be an a analogous situation. NATO is weak because we always took up the slack (as long as Joe gets his 10%). (but as usual I must no I am not "pro-ethanol" so much as pro ... defend the small farmer or Gates/China/oligarchs will buy everything, you will own nothing and be happy ... or dead.

1. Moratorium on all requirements for corn to be refined to ethanol.
2. Make it illegal to blend gasoline with ethanol for for fuels intended for cars that could run on 100% gasoline.
I know I know, ethanol corn is "feed grade" non sweet corn. But even so, that corn can still be human food as corn flakes, corn syrup, corn meal, and corn flour. Stop burning our food supply in cars now. We use enough corn to feed 250 million people for a year in ethanol production. That is completely unethical during a global food shortage.

I've studied the concept of revolts over the years. They are as alike as they are different. Just what the tipping point is no one knows, but I think you are right. Its closer now than ever.

You can can meats like beef and pork, salmon tuna (if available), venison, elk, moose, for long-term storage (5-10 years). I leave chicken to the pros. Do it now while shelves aren't bare.
Pressure canner and a good supply of lids are a must. Use the beef in stews/chili. Use the pork in chile verde. Spaghetti meat sauce is another possible long-term canning prospect.

Well it's not simply a matter of size, but Africa could theoretically feed itself. Africa has some regions that are great farmland, some are terrible. Zimbabwe has pretty good farmland for instance, they used to be known as the breadbasket of Africa.

It could, easily. Before colonization, it did. There's a real problem there of a lack of ambition for one thing, and for another a serious tendency toward dictatorships by a strong man who takes everything for themselves, does nothing to set up and encourage business and farming, and rob their people.
And, there's a certain resistance to "western" style behavior like crop farming and management of resources. Then again, there's at least some who are simply disinterested in the work it would take to maintain this kind of thing. In South Africa and Zimbabwe, places like that, the governments took the farms away from white farmers and gave them to cronies of the big boss man and his party.
But the cronies were criminal scum who didn't care for working a farm, and after a few years ended up selling the farms back to the old farmers.

I was reading, or rather trying to read, an article earlier this morning. It was about that girl (now woman) Courtney Stodden who married that actor Doug Somebody about a decade ago. He was in his 50's, and she was 16, and then they got some reality show or shows and it was all very creepy.
Anyway, Courtney is now divorced from the old guy and is claiming that he is a pedophile and she was trafficked to him by her own parents. But the article said at the beginning that Courtney now "identifies as non-binary and that her pronouns are they and them." LOL.
Then the idiot article writer or editors used "they" or "them" in reference to Courtney, which made the entire article pretty much unreadable, because the writer was also making references to her parents and other pedophiles, and so as you're reading it's unclear if the "they" is the parents or other pedophiles or Courtney, so you have to continually re-read a sentence and mentally substitute in "she" or "her" for the "they" and "them" in order to make any sense of it, and it was just completely stupid and the reader comments were blistering.

Many studies have shown that ethanol is not just bad for engines, it isn't any tangible benefit to the environment, and possibly is worse.
But Banana leaves and other plants actually can produce ethanol more efficiently and less damaging to the environment, were that the actual goal of this entire debacle.

You can't make ethanol for banana leaves yet. At least no one has been able to make ethanol from cellulose on a commercial scale yet with a net production of energy and not a loss. You still need the sugars. So any sweet/starch can be used.

Funny thing about that. Brazil was once the worlds leading producer of ethanol. Now it's not. The US using corn raised the price of corn syrup to the point where Brazilian farmers could make more money just selling sugar, so that's what they did. Now Brazil uses more petroleum for transportation. Net effect on the environment? Who knows? But it was all pretty pointless.

In Colombia it was traditionally made into aguardiente but there was always the risk of overheating it and generating wood alcohol as well during distillation. Which is why they use molasses like everyone else now.
As a side note, Brazil had the infrastructure to grow, harvest and process cane for alcohol, and it was a way to put a market bottom under the sugarcane producers. I am not sure they still use alcohol powered cars there now that they have their own oilfields, (I may be wrong)
One of the crops in Eastern Oregon is sugar beet, and the sugar plant at Nyssa used to open and close down depending on the current sugar price. I always thought it would be a thing to generate fuel alcohol there when the sugar price was low.

Straw man there. There is a long tradition, world-wide, of growing non-food crops for fiber, oils, and chemicals like drugs and dyestuffs. And cottonseed oil does show up in food items.

See, we use 133 million tons of corn each year to make ethanol. And Russia and Ukraine export 113 million tons of grain. Ergo, we have more than enough food, if we would just stop stupidly turning it into fuel.
Now, we'd have to replace all the fuel. Fortunately, we can build the Keystone pipeline and get all we need that way.
This could all happen within six months.
