Meet The PetMorons

Salem.jpg

Hi Mis Hum,

I am a long, long time lurker of the blog. GREAT reading! I especially LOVE the Pet Thread every week…it’s a nice break from the disturbing reality this world has been delivering.

If you can spare some space, I’d love to see my buddy Salem in the thread one day. We lost him this week after 13.5 years. He actually had a very large tumor removed from his leg a little over a year ago, so I feel like the last year was borrowed time, and we made sure he enjoyed it. He loved to go camping…he was a bona-fide beach bum…and his favorite thing in the world was just being with my wife and I on the couch (well, second favorite to pizza, maybe).

He was born on Halloween in 2008, hence, the name. I didn’t want to name him goblin or ghoul or anything like that, though at times it may have fit. We had gone to Salem, MA the year before for Halloween, so it sort of fell into place.

Keep up the good work, both on the Pet Thread and in the blog in general!

Thanks! - Phil and Reene

I would be happy to share Salem's collage and biography with the Horde. So sorry to hear of his passing. It certainly sounds as if he was the perfect companion. Thank you for your kind words.

18 It was a painful to my pocketbook week, but Fanny the cat is feeling better. It dawned on me last weekthat she didn't seem to be eating much. When she was spayed, they told me there were two problem teeth. I decided to leave them and she was fine for a year. I could see the inflammation, so had her in on Thursday to have them checked. They removed three teeth. Two others were checked but the roots are good so they stayed.

She's a small cat and I always stress when they work on her. She's eating well and recovering. It was just under $600 but I won't have to deal with those teeth again.

19 The gym I go to is dog-friendly. Usually this is not a problem, but last time I was there a German Shepard that *clearly* needed to switch to decaf was there. Never barked once, but he had a metal water dish that was his toy and he could scoot it on the floor at about 70mph with his nose. But what he REALLY wanted was for someone to throw the water dish. My workout got more challenging when the dog realized I had no GS resistance and would play even when using the leg press So my trainer and I referred to any of these "enhanced" lifts as "with Doge", e.g. "shoulder press with Doge". (Pro tip: you can soccer-dribble a metal water dish even when doing tricep pulldowns. It's true!)

25 Last month I had to take my little Chihuahua to the Cardiologist to evaluate her heart problem. It cost over $900 for the evaluation and she has CHF and Hypertension. Put her on Heart Meds and Viagra (For Hypertension) and doing really well. Eating and gained 0.75 lbs in about 3 weeks. Doctor said that she would have passed away if not for the cardiologist appointment. This hardened Persian Gulf Combat Vet was in tears until my little Chihuahua became better... 47 Started feeding my feline crew a daily canned chicken treat--Tyson, Hormel, or whatever is on 2 for 1 sale. That way it's not much more costly than good canned food, and I can freeze a large can in smaller containers. I admit to usually feeding them regular old cat chow, so this adds more meat and lessens the corn factor. They seem more alert and energetic now.

I used to occasionally dog sit for some family friends when I was in high school. They had the two biggest German Shepherds I've ever seen. A male and a female and each was well over 100 pounds.

People used to give a wide berth when I would take them for a walk but the truth was they were giant teddy bears and wouldn't hurt a fly. Great dogs.

I might have to start doing that!

The cat in the top pic from Nurse R. looks a lot like my late big black cat Wolf.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat endures. He is still eating (though we think he's losing weight bit by bit, not fast), moving around slowly, purring when petted and groomed, and letting out a screech when he knows we're about to force his liquid med down him. In other words, about the same as the last few weeks and overall the same as the last few months. He seems determined to hang on, so we continue.

The foreign tax credit regulations released at the beginning of the year, according to the paper,

represent a tax hike for many U.S. companies that earn profits from customers abroad. While the initial motivation for revising FTC rules was the adoption of digital services taxes (DSTs) in foreign jurisdictions, the final rules have impacts well beyond the DSTs.

I used to say about the late Marie-Antoinette the smart black queen that she let out meows like a bat sending out sonar, and when the echoes came back she knew where she was. An exaggeration, as her vision was excellent.

Had a neighbor tom cat I called Dreamsicle. Bright orange and creamy white. he was so cool. Reminded me of Ricky, my cat when I was a kid. Would come visit when I sat on my deck in the evening with a glass of bourbon.

Alas, his humans moved away.

90 Old Dog had a stroke a little over a week ago. Took him about two days to remember how to do some things, but now he is his usual self. I was joking with kidlet that I was thinking about putting him back on Tramadol because he is getting rambunctious and at his age (14) he could really hurt himself.

Posted by: mustbequantum at March 19, 2022 03:25 PM (MIKMs)

91 Thank you for the kinds words about Salem everyone. He had a large personality and the house is very quiet without him. It was a nice day in PA today...a good yard work day. I will miss his 'supervisory' skills on days like this, i.e. tossing toys at me, chasing the other yard creatures, staring longingly at the pool...and just plain being my companion. We got his ashes back yesterday, so, in a way, he's home. I feel a little less empty. Just a little.

92 Our big black cat may have finally learned not to jump into the dryer. Thank Heaven I realized something was up after a couple of 'thumps'. Opened the door and a very disgruntled cat shot out. He's fine- all that was damaged was his dignity. (and yes, I watch for his big stubborn butt, but all it took was looking away for a second. :::shudder::

Hugs to Phil and Renee, and agitator.

95 Right after Katrina there was a sandy and white medium-haired cat who hung around my section of the apartment complex, came for petting, and would sit nearby when I was polishing my car. Little Oreo, the incumbent cat, didn't like him, or I'd have taken him in. Oddly, years before the black cat Wolf, I was thinking of calling this fellow that. There are red wolves, after all.

He got adopted by a family in the next building, and they moved away soon after. He deserved a good home.

96 New Old Dog is now moping and we are not sure whether it is his cancer or just because Old Dog had so much attention, including all my children, over the past week. New Old Dog will only eat people food right now, so I'm indulging him because he is really much too thin and at his age (we think 12) nothing much can hurt him.

98 Our older rescue dog which we believe is about 10 years old has been limping a lot. We think he's part dachshund and who knows what else without a Maury Povich DNA test.

The limp is sporadic. It comes and goes. We have pain medicine from the vet...where you can't go in - grrrrr - and Tri-Acta.

The Tri-Acta has REALLY seemed to be helping. But this is the pet thread and if anyone else has ideas how to make Ralphy healthier, that'd be great.

Late in her life my last dog had hip problems and CBD oil seemed to really help. You can get CBD-infused treats, but I just used a dropper to give her the oil straight.

106 Finally, Old Cat is doing very well. Still skinny, even with the daily thyroid medication, but he has started the zoomies again and going around the house smacking the dogs. Grandkids are kind of scared of him and Old Cat works hard to ensure that he keeps them in awe and fear. Don't know why he is 'my' cat (am not a cat person).

107 CBD is actually quite helpful. But be careful.

Pet acupuncture is also a thing. And can be amazing. Especially with older dogs.

109 Sorry. I should just ignore.

Wolfus,
I love hearing about Chekov. And so pleased he's still enjoying the little things.

I saw you were considering bombing your place for the bugs in the building. Please do what you can to not displace Chekov. He's so fragile.

Skritches for him and all our furry (and not so furry) friends who keep us company and give us comfort.

112 Old dog gets CBD oil first thing in the morning, followed by her gabapentin and prednisone. The taurine definitely helps with seizures. I am also trying some lysine to clear up her eyes. She gets duralactin and krill oil too. She' not walking all rhat well but manages to pull it together when we go to the woods.

115 Granddaughter 3yo, goes around telling everyone that her old dogs eat sammiches. Helpful adults try to explain sammiches are for people, but she insists. Daughter then has to explain to strangers that yes, the old dogs like their sammiches and they prefer ketchup rather than mustard because they won't eat without condiments.

Hi nurse!!

My town has 2 sets of stoplights, so I don't think that is an option. Fortunately, Ralphy isn't that bad. But dude will not eat unless my mother is there. Zero survival instincts.

Dog food, vegetables microwaved with gravy added and dude seems disinterested. I'm a single guy and am happy with almost any food.

118 Maybe I can now nap (my usual state for the Pet Thread) until it is dinner time for the old fogeys (who eat better than I do) and I make their soft shell tacos with spicy chicken.

119 I use NuLeaf. I started with pet strength but went to people strength. I may change back if ahe stays seizure free with the taurine.

Posted by: Notsothoreau - look forward at March 19, 2022 04:49 PM (YynYJ)

120 Alas, once again, this old phart's nap time conflicts with getting to the Pet Thread while it's fresh. I suppose most of the petting Morons have wandered on.

It really is jarring, reading through the critter comments, and finding totally off-topic comments.

So, our dear little yeller yowler, Charlie, seemed to be heading for the rainbow bridge for a couple of weeks, but now seems to be on the upswing again. I wondered if he had caught the flu or whatever it was that I had, then MiladyJo had. He was losing weight, hardly eating, sleeping a lot, failing simple jumps, walking unsteadily. But the last couple of days, he's been eating more seemed to be meatier, jumping more jauntily, and this sunny afternoon he even ventured outside, taking up his old watching-for-rodents position. Yay!
