The Morning Report - 3/16/22

butfirstblofeldme.jpg

Good morning, kids. Wednesday and the truly colossal, earth-shaking story this morning is the greatest deliberative body on the planet, the United States Senate has decided to tackle arguably the greatest existential threat we face. Russia? China? Iran? No. -- Daylight Savings Time.

Rest easy, America. The United States Senate has got your back. Mostly with a knife sticking in it. Ides of March indeed.

Back here in the real world, while the Klain Kalorama Komintern have now doused the drapery with gasoline - kind of a miracle considering it's almost too expensive even for them - and are ready to burn down the house, far too many have been focused on what's happening in Ukraine. While it is for sure tragic, and a trip that was not necessary had it not been for the incompetence of past administrations (Trump notwithstanding) and for sure the clueless, globalist pinheads in Foggy Bottom and the Kennedy School of International Relations et al, is Putin's attempted annexation of that nation really worth the potential to touch off a nuclear confrontation? If you answered yes, or if you think that it won't and that we should still get involved, you need to seek help.

Unfortunately, Dennis Prager seems to be getting right up to that line.

If the Left were concerned with what is in America's interest, it would not advocate—and, under  Joe Biden, implement—open borders. It is not in America's interest to allow millions of people to illegally enter the United States.

If the Left were concerned with what is in America's interest, it would not advocate—and, under Biden, implement—policies to change America from an energy-independent country into an energy-dependent country.

If the Left were concerned with what is in America's interest, it would not advocate lying to its youth by telling them that America is systemically racist, that it was founded in 1619, that it fought the Revolution to preserve slavery, and that America's founders were immoral racists. It would not advocate defunding police departments. It would not have advocated depriving young children of education for two years.

The Left everywhere despises America. And the American Left is no exception. Most liberals love America, but they vote for the Left. So, their love is irrelevant.

Stop the tape. Dennis, you are now getting yourself into a semantics trap of your own design. How can most liberals supposedly "love America yet still vote Left" knowing full well that the Left hates the America that you claim they, "most liberals," allegedly love? Roll tape . . .

Unlike the Left, people on the Right are preoccupied with the question, "What is in America's interest?" That is why the Trump-era slogan "America First" so resonated with conservatives. . .

. . . they believe that America, despite its flaws, has been exactly as Abraham Lincoln described it: "The last best hope of Earth." Therefore, teaching young Americans that America is the very opposite is not only a lie, but it will also destroy the foundations of this country.

One hopes that virtually all conservatives (and virtually all people across the political spectrum) regard the invasion as evil. Whoever doesn't has a malfunctioning conscience.

Yet, some people, on the Right as well as the Left, do not put the entire blame for the war on Putin. Their chief argument is that Putin felt threatened by the possible expansion of NATO into Ukraine.

Stop tape. No, Dennis. Accusing people who try to explain WHY Putin invaded as somehow mitigating his actions or even taking his side is offensive. Roll tape . . .

NATO notwithstanding, the primary "not in America's interest" argument goes like this: "What Putin is doing is wrong, but essentially it is none of our business. The United States has no interest in Ukraine."

To this argument, one can ask: Other than an attack on America, when and where does America have an interest? And why? If a Russian dictator can invade and decimate another country in an act of unprovoked aggression and it not be in America's interest, what about China invading Taiwan, or Iran unleashing nuclear weapons against Israel, or North Korea doing so against South Korea? Why are Taiwan, Israel, or South Korea more "in America's interest" than Ukraine?

And, finally, what about the moral question? Is morality "in America's interest"? I have supported the notion of "America First." But as a conservative and as a religious conservative, I do not believe in "America Only." For the same reasons, I believe in "my family first," but I do not believe in "my family only."

Well, that is the question, isn't it? Let's look at the examples that he cites. In virtually all of them, we have either treaty obligations or other agreements that hold that the US would actively defend or otherwise provide materiel assistance to a nation in the event of an attack. In at least two, the regions involved are of tremendous strategic importance to our economic well-being as well as global security and containment of enemies. In the case of Ukraine, I could be wrong but I don't think the 1994 Budapest Memorandum obligates us to go to war with Russia in the event it invades Ukraine. Commenters please advise. That said, we have abject dolts like Sean Hannity and Lindsay Graham calling for the CIA or the SEALs to assassinate Putin to the neo-con Right and now the neo-neo-con Left calling for the imposition of a no-fly zone over Ukraine. That is a de facto declaration of war against a nuclear-armed Russia. Brilliant.

And now we get to the crux of the biscuit. Prager opines, "Other than an attack on America, when and where does America have an interest? And why?" I guess my glib response to that would be, American interest is a bit like pornography. I'll know it when I see it. Sorry to say, our own government's fuck ups both past and present vis a vis Ukraine and Russia notwithstanding, I just do not see Vladimir Putin - brutal, thuggish and international war criminal he surely is - invading Ukraine as a threat to our national security interests.

The bigger point I want to emphasize is, considering that as a direct result of the hijacking of the 2020 election which resulted in the overthrow of the legitimate government of the United States of America, any conversation about "American interests" and "national security" such as those concepts were before November of 2020 are moot. Prager himself takes up almost half of his very well-written essay actually identifying the greatest threat to our national security, inextricably linked to our individual freedom and security, without even realizing it: The American Left. As Michael Walsh underscored in the latest podcast, ever since Aaron Burr slew Alexander Hamilton (as well as conspired with Spain to seize part of early 19th century America and be installed as its emperor) right up until the present day, it is they in the form of the Democrat Party that have been and remain our gravest threat.

But the Democrat Party are merely the visible pawns doing the bidding of a much more malevolent force. That is, the World Economic Forum and its coterie of multi billionaires and other self-proclaimed globalist elites who are seeking to upend over a thousand years of human progress and essentially enslave the world. Funny how the loudest, most strident calls for Putin's head are coming from individuals like Nazi collaborator George Soros, Hans-Georg Wyss, Klaus Schwab, Bill Gates and others. Considering the truly sick, megalomaniacal machinations that these fiends intend to impose on us and the world, their protestations are hardly because of the pain and suffering of the Ukrainian people. Putin is not "down for the struggle," so to speak. Whether or not Xi is is not readily apparent. Him supporting Putin - and it's been lukewarm so far - could be that he, Xi, is playing both sides against the middle.

What's going on in Ukraine is horrendous. That said, I'm more concerned with what's going on right here and now in the former United States.

The Davos/WEF/Great Reset Mafia have aided and abetted in the destruction from within of our society and government (ironically started by the former Soviet Union nearly 100 years ago). I'm not really "rootin' for Putin" because I love what he's doing. But I sure as hell am not rooting for the enslavement of us and whatever is left of the free world such as it is. As to what is in our interest, right now it's our own self-preservation from the cancer that de-facto invaded/metastasized from within ever since Woodrow Wilson, if not earlier.. When we excise that disease and cure ourselves, then we can talk about national security from an international perspective, or even from a moral perspective, though I would still resist that.

Psaki-Psircling back to the Psenate . . .

But wait! There's more! Six (count 'em!) of our wonderful GOP Senators took the slings and arrows of outrage to defend the greatest medical mind of our age, Anthony Fauci, from being removed from his position. Leading the cause was none other than our own Mitt "Pee-Air" Defecto" Romney. Our hero.

37 I'm just flabbergasted that the entire world is like "Yep, the Government should totally tell me what time it is and when I should go to work and stuff."

There was once a time when Government (specifically State or Federal/National) didn't tell you what time it was. Whoever had the biggest clock in town (often the city government, but sometimes a railroad or a university or some such) told you what time it was - and they tracked as close to the sun as they reasonably could.

Even once railroads started needing coordinated time, the Feds didn't step in for quite a while - the railroads just more-or-less sorted it out.

But now, the Government says, "you know what, we're going to pretend its one solar hour later than it really is" and everyone just takes it in stride instead of laughing at the Canutean hubris.

Also - what about States that don't observe DST? Are they just forever forced out of sync? Are they forced to adopt this thing they have said they don't want?

I read an interesting piece on the petrodollar yesterday. Brief monetary history: After WWII, we imposed Bretton Woods on the world. We're were king, then, victorious and unscathed. We could impose our will on the world.

The established the dollar as the world's reserve currency, like the British pound used to be. That is, international payments were to be made in dollars. In return we pledged the dollar would redeemable in gold, a fixed amount (this set the price of gold to a constant in dollars). This was only true internationally. Domestically, the dollar was fiat since FDR.

In the 60s and 70s, France started calling us on that, demanding repayment in gold. We couldn't make it, we'd printed too many dollars. So Tricky Dick had to close the gold window.

This would have destroyed the dollar and Bretton Woods, but Tricky Dick and Kissinger did a stick save. They made an agreement with Saudi Arabia, whereby the Saudi's would price oil only in dollars. In return we promised to protect Saudi security. Also, probably not develop our own oil too much to upset Saudi oil hegemony.

46 This was Bretton Woods II, and save the dollar. It effectively pegged the dollar to oil. After than, the price of oil sort of bounced around $10 - 40 per barrel, mean of about $20.

Think of this not as the price of oil, but the value of the dollar, internationally, in terms of oil.

In around the mid-2000s, that "peg" went to hell. That was the beginning of the end. The 2008 crisis, and the money printing accelerated that. The 2020 Covid printing spree was the "all at once" end game of that acceleration.

The dollar is gone as the reserve currency. Squandered by idiots.

I disagree that the question is moot, but it is now at least a bifurcated question. Like most tyrannies, the questions of "what is in the interests of the American people" and "what is in the interests of the American government/state" are now separate questions. They shouldn't be and those should always track, but they don't when the government and population are alienated. Well, we're alienated. So now both questions must be answered. If it's in the broad interest of the people, the people will answer "yes, there is interest." If it's in the broad interest of the state, the government will answer "yes, there is interest." Only if both agree - which they do not in this case - can there be said to be "American interest."

57 To this argument, one can ask: Other than an attack on America, when and where does America have an interest? And why?

Also, "Just War Theory" can go die in a fire. Wars are justified in 2 circumstances: defense (of ourselves or those we are obliged by treaty to defend) or security of a necessary resource (that word "necessary" can get tricky, though) from a truly hostile power.

That's it. Those are the two reasons it's okay to go to war.

Assuming the situation fits one of those reasons, the only way to wage war justly is to kill as many of the other guy's soldiers and destroy as much of his infrastructure as quickly as possible to force him to accept your terms. Because that's the only way to end wars quickly and reduce long term suffering and loss of life.

Doesn't surprise me - Prager is another guy that I can listen to for about five minutes. He's got a pollyannish view of the world, and the United States place in it. He also really likes talking about what other people should do.

Born in 1948. Another guy that heavily leans on a particular ideology. He simply follows it, without regard of pros and cons, and no regard for results.

I'd make it real simple to the self-described genius that is Dennis Prager - there is no "moral question" worth risking a global nuclear war. Period. Full stop. Maybe the prospects of nuclear war seem less scary to somebody like Dennis that was born in 1948 - since he doesn't have that much longer on this Earth anyway.

DST is an abomination. The claim is it saves energy, but that is utter and complete bullshit, some noble fig leaf to cover the crass self-interest involved.

Who wants DST? Big Retail, and other Bigs. They like to have the by-the-clock quitting time be an hour earlier relative to local sun time. This increases business for them

That's the only fucking reason. Astronomical time has a certain definition: Mean solar time, defined when the mean sun (much vagaries there due to the Earth's ellipitical orbit) is overhead, or at its antipode.

That is the definition of time. Do not fuck with it for crass purposes of self-interest.

66 And, finally, what about the moral question? Is morality "in America's interest"?

Given that the Church has failed its primary and secondary missions (Make disciples and obedience to God's Word) the morality angle is definitely off the table.

Transcendent Morality is not to be confused Ad hoc Values. Morality gets its provenance from a pure and holy God; Values originate from a fallen and depraved Man.

Justice is supposed to be an extension of God's Morality, not this Calvin Ball of Social / Environmental / Racial / Economic /* "Justice".

And its pretty clear by now, particularly with the enormous amounts of unchecked "Diversity" that the this former Republic no longer has a moral and religious people, and by extension, the criminals that overthrew the government and installed their Junta, can at best be described as demonic and of their Father the Devil.

So America no longer has any "moral" authority or obligation. We have become as the world and have returned to the Historic Norm of institutionalized lawlessness, and wickedness.

Morality driven foreign policy gets us the Carter years. Ukraine has traditionally been within Russia's sphere of influence. We have been meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs through bribe solicitations and color revolutions. Our role there should have been to encourage internal reforms of an utterly corrupt government while advising them to stay neutral between us and the Russians. That would have been the moral thing to do. Instead, our corruptocrats went looting.

Listening to Prager for any length of time always made me start ranting about the difference between individual ethics and morality vs corporate ethics and morality.

Short version: a PERSON has a moral duty (if you are a Christian, at least, and I believe the Jews believe the same) to deny the self in service of our brothers and sisters. A GROUP has a moral duty to see to betterment and security (as defined by the group's charter/purpose) of it's members AND NO ONE ELSE (which is not to say the group should cheat, steal, and defraud, but that it has no particular business - as the group - in stopping other groups from doing the same).

I, personally, may have a moral or ethical imperative (for whatever reason) to, for instance, go to Ukraine and volunteer to help them. The United States has no such moral or ethical imperative.

79 The problem with the 'necessity of securing a strategic resource' as justification for war is indeed tricky as suggested. Empires, like ours, are built on assuming most of the world's resources are strategic to our interests. In other words, one man's manifest destiny is another's living space or historic (real ro imagined) borders argument. Men can rationalize anything in pursuit of "more".

Nobody knows all of them, but we know some. Our monetary policy depends on consistent (or growing) global demand for dollars. If major international commodity settlement no longer depends on the dollar, then the bill for our monetary policy comes due. We can no longer maintain significant trade deficits and the mediator for that - the exchange rate - will reflect the new reality. At very least, the loss of the petrodollar will cause the USD value to tank in Forex markets and imports suddenly become very expensive. Interest also probably soars. Governments at most levels likely go negative on cashflow and have to move to balanced budgets immediately or risk hyperinflation and outright failure of the entire complex. In the short term, everything gets very scarce and very expensive because we're so import dependent. That also means the exporters in Asia and Germany struggle with the loss of the market here.

You can say that again. Here, I'll do it for you: "The problem with the 'necessity of securing a strategic resource' as justification for war is indeed tricky as suggested."

Nevertheless, it is a tricky problem that must be addressed individually each time it arises. England, for the nonce, is not our enemy and is not a hostile nation - therefore any resource we had to have that was primarily in English control would be okay. North Korea is an actively hostile nation. Any resource that is necessary for us that falls in their control is something we have every right (internationally) to secure - preferably by means of treaty, but by means of war if necessary.

Now what's "necessary?" Oil? Lithium? Uranium? Those all have actual strategic value. What about things that don't have that value: diamonds, or precious stones, or arugula? Are those "necessary?"

What if the only place we could get Insulin was North Korea? Would that justify securing that supply by war (if no mutually agreed upon treaty could be reached)?

I'll do you one better - what would the United States actually do to follow this moral imperative that Dennis dreamed up ? Why, they'd compel people to take up arms and go fight in the Ukraine. That's all a nation state can do.

Again, as you say - do those individual soldiers feel Dennis's grand moral imperative ? I'd say mostly not - since I'm not aware of any volunteer brigades being formed. But, Dennis played the moral card - and that's all that certain people need to hear. It plays to their feelz.

Historically, you'll see the divide between DST and Standard time purists is basically between the "by the sun" people vs. the "by the clock" people. That is between people who's workday is defined by the sun, like farmers, and those workday is defined by the absolute value of the local clock.

The "sun people" realize, intuitively, it's nonsense. The "clock people" like the extra hour of post-workday sunlight.

I will not get in the vagaries of astronomical time vs atomic time and all that unless someone wants to go there, 'cause it's quite complex. But basically, the celestial motions of the Earth around Mr. Sun relative to the sidereal, inertial background get complex.

Biology adjusted itself to the motions of Earth around Mr. Sun. That is the best notion of civil time. For precision purposes of a proper time yardstick, atomic time is the best. The twain need not meet.

DST is an abomination to both standards of time.

113 I'll state right up front that, while I know it's going to be bad when it happens, I don't know the full apocalyptic mushroom cloud that will unfold when we lose reserve currency status.

The process has been going on for quite a while. The SDR of the IMF (a basket of currencies) was supposed to be the Great Substitute so that one country, like reprobates in the Fed and DC wouldn't spoil it. But there seems to be a pact among currency traders and the global bankers that if one country inflates their currencies than other members of the cabal inflate theirs too so that one currency doesn't dominate the others, so SPRs really are yet another mechanism for currency traders to wring out arbitrage profits.

You can thank the black markets for keeping the US dollar alive, even though its a PITA to trade dollars in Mexico because of action against the drug cartels.

There is a lot of informal momentum to keep the fiat US dollar in play. But there should be and will be a divorce. It will be fun to watch the sharks play now.

Another instance of blindly following ideology. The current political class is wedded to the notion that we must cease as a super-power. Frankly, I see positives and negatives to it.

But they haven't thought it through. When we stop becoming a super-power, our ability to support a super-power military dies as well - and they'll no longer be able to project power across the globe. That means no more color revolutions.

When the dollar ceases as the world currency, their ability to print currency ceases with it. No more of the recent fiscal madness with minimal consequences. And they're proceeding with no acknowledgement of that. If they think they can somehow stay above the fray - they're sadly mistaken.

123 The problem I am having with my retirement investments. We know a crash is coming. In a right proper crash it will drop below 15,000, then take a decade to recover. Cold comfort time, but the WEF doesn't really want the destruction of the America. They do very much want its extreme diminution and to see it remade under their own vision.

The global technocrat vision is, essentially, a world with zero superpowers and five or six chaotically stable regional powers. All of these regional powers will have technocratic management so top-line policy is basically similar. There is no liberty under their vision, as all men are just gears in their technocratic engine. The nations as they are get remade as integrated technocracies.

The US has the most to fall (from liberal global power to technocratic North American power) under such a scheme.

--

This is a topic that deserves much thought and introspection. My viewpoint about America (namely the governing body and all its moving parts) has changed drastically over the course of about 15 years, with most emphasis on the last 5. There is a dark undercurrent within DC that has probably been there to some degree for a very long time, but only now has become apparent. The wholesale corruption and nefarious evil actors are all components of a nation with no moral compass. They've made sure society has followed suit. One look at social media shows a reflection of just who and what we've become. It's not pretty. We have no morals as a nation. By all accounts, we are Godless. I can't think of a worse time in our country's history.

This is also the primary reason I think an all-digital (cashless) US dollar is unlikely. The government wants the visibility and control of a cashless system, but far too much nasty shit is financed by pallets of Benjamins. The US government needs cash, because they need it to fund their illegal and sinister activity abroad. If those dollars can't repatriate because they can't be spent, they have no value. All-digital currency would wreck their plans. They want it for its domestic oppression potential, but their lust for that is mediated by their lust for hinky shit financed in cash.

We can talk of "should" or "is." The two seldom, if ever, coincide.

Both, of course, are important. We need to discuss and think about "should" so we can have a framework from which to address the "is," but the "is" must be our working foundation to which we apply the "should" - anything else is simply wishful thinking.

This applies to all morality and virtue when we get down to actually making real world choices.

How much more significant is it to keep the "should" in mind and apply it to the "is" when we're talking about decisions that will cost thousands of lives and livelihoods?

Yeah, the classic model in Europe was to have two sons... one to be the heir, and one to go into the Church as a sort of hot-swappable backup (the Church would generally turn him loose for a "small donation", should anything happen to the primary heir).

Any sons after the second one were steered into Crusades and the like. They'd either conquer their own territory (in which case, no problem) or get killed (in which case, no problem).

I concur with the latter but am not so sure about the former. If there's a second civil war, this time around the victor will likely be externally selected. Somebody will arm one faction or another and somebody else may well directly engage by, say, nuking urban or industrial centers controlled by the faction they'd prefer to lose. Capitalize on the chaos.

I am not at all sure, however, that this results in conquest or foreign administration. There isn't a lot of strategic sense in that because the goal would be to knock out America, and that would be accomplished just by adding to the melee and winning a very pleased postwar ally. Why muck about with administration and empire when you can just kill the big guy and get at least one of his kids on your side?

You have a more formal education on these things - mine ended in four years of a glorified community college with a technical degree that turned out well. Sven and you both often pull out concise terms that describe theories I've formed and observations I've made over the decades.

This is one of those moments - the inability to think even one move ahead, let alone three or four. I've seen this in all generations, in both the chaos of the real world as well as neatly defined, relatively controlled things like various card and board games.

And here's the kicker - I don't think it's an inability in many cases, as much as an outright refusal.

That's sort of the point. You impose a "no-fly zone" by shooting down anything that flies in it. Eventually, the opponent stops trying or you fail to impose the zone. The old-fashioned language for this was "air supremacy." A no-fly zone - if it works - achieves air supremacy in that the enemy doesn't even try to engage because he knows he will die if he does and his death and the destruction of his hardware won't buy much death and destruction on your side. The idea of the no-fly zone is that a credible power tells a combatant, "you know we can achieve air supremacy and this is your opportunity to acknowledge that and quit at any time you want to, and in exchange we won't ravage your air forces and kill your airmen when they're on the ground and you've bowed out of aerial combat operations."

And Russia might decide they can sustain a dogfight, in which case the "no-fly zone" just becomes an aerial combat theater where both try to achieve superiority and then supremacy.

Many people here spark curiosity in some other corner of knowledge and I'll set off to understand it. Also helps to have very high retention of what I read/see/hear.

272 > A place I transacted with would weigh the slver on their scale, and quote a price. They have been in the business for several generations.

Some places sell by weight (which honestly, is probably the best way), others sell bags of $x face value (which is going to vary depending on coin wear).

Back in the day, there were numerous ways of getting extra metal from coins. There was the obvious clipping or filing of the edges (which is why coins have those milled edges, even though they're base metal). Another method was called "sweating". You'd put a bunch of gold and silver coins in a bag and shake the piss out of it for a long time. Do this enough, and eventually there's a layer of gold or silver dust in the bottom of the back, which can be melted down into bullion.

The advantage of sweating over clipping is that the loss in weight looks a lot more like normal wear and tear, though it was no doubt still suspicious if you handed in a bunch of this years coins looking like they had 20 years of wear on them.

312 Look at the population projections for Africa, there will be mass starvation.

I'm sort of conflicted. The massive gains in population in Africa have largely been due to equally massive gains in the provision by Western nations of medicines and food.

While gifts of food priced out local farmers so that they could never profit and build their own food supplies because foreign aid would always outprice them in the market, it did allow others to flourish - to what degree they could. (I think Bill Gates and his industry of micro loans was probably the best thing that ever happened to Africa).

Its like cultivating a large bird population by pouring near unlimited amounts of seed in an area for a few years and then abruptly stopping it. In those years of plenty there was a thriving and growing population of birds that the natural land could never support. So when the artificial supply went away, the scavengers played Survival of the Fittest - Cage Match.

332 I was told that reading the KJV is greatly aided by wearing a frilly collar.

They did studies of the education required to read the KJV compared to modern [per]versions. The KJV was ranked the highest as requiring a 12th grade education, everything else was geared for the illiterate and dull.

Bothered by the claim of the "inerrant Word of God" and then seeing shelves filled with a large variety of English translations, how could all translations be inerrant yet necessary such where it demanded their existence?

Or as some KJV Only enthusiasts would say: "If the King James was good enough for Jesus and Paul, then it is good enough for me".

Resolving that problem led me to learning the original languages so now I don't care what translations exist.

As a general thought experiment, is there ANY nation in Africa that could rise to dominate the continent in the same way that China dominates Asia, Russia dominates Europe (right now), or the U.S. dominates North America? Forget leadership for the moment. Which country has the resources and human capital to make it happen?

A couple of things:

1) Obama is a grifter and he hates the US. He's giving this "I have a Dream.(of Wakanda)" speech cuz it's a good money maker for the Slow Brains and LowIQ crowd on the left. My, my how uplifting! All the Black people banding together like little Black Smurfs. Totally ignores history, human nature, and culture. He probably sees himself as Preezy of Africa.

Well the German part isn't really relevant since the English aren't a Germanic people(Angles yes but the English are Britons). That's a language thing, much like the Norman impact but stronger. And the economy is from the Dutch when England imported their royalty from there.

There wasn't really an English world order. We didn't start heavily meddling in Europe until WWI, and the League of Nations is an American, not British project. Calling it a Pax Anglia seems to imply some period of time where the British were relevant for world peace, instead of their usual foreign policy of trying to keep Europe at war to limit the rise of a powerful rival. British foreign policy was actually rather dickish.

the hard, sad, unmentionable fact is that the only way any African government could ever rise out of poverty and become relevant would be if they had a Colonial government imposed from outside. China may make a play at that in the coming century; but then the Chinese have always had the problem that they have never given two shits about anyplace not in the Middle Kingdom. We did, along with the prior one in, IIRC, 2006. It was after the 2014 color revolution that Putin seized Crimea. He also drew one of those "red lines" that national leaders sometimes do, making for two "red lines" in the region. The first was "no other country that shares a border with Russia shall enter NATO" and this was why he invaded Georgia at the end of the Bush 43 administration. The second, as of 2014, was, "no more color revolutions in Russia's sphere of influence." We probably violated that last year with the attempted revolution in Kazakhstan that Russia put down with a limited invasion. Add that to Lloyd Austin's "open door policy" stance with regard to Ukraine and NATO and now both "red lines" have been violated.

Whether those "red lines" are reasonable or justified is a different matter, but Putin hasn't been secretive about what he considers a violation justifying military response.

396 These are people who think they're clever enough to deal with powerful foreign countries run by sane people. They're not, and those foreign powers have taken note of that fact. The kind of Americans the world fears or respects have been put out of government and military leadership and replaced by a menagerie of nursing home patients, human resources ladies, affirmative action hires, sexual degenerates, and obese four-star generals angling for board seats on the next Theranos start-up. The day of reckoning has arrived. Leaders like Putin, Xi, and Mohammed bin Salman are no longer amenable to being pushed around and morally browbeaten by the circus freaks that constitute the United States Government.

Yes; It's very disrespectful. I think the gay author claims to be RC, which I suppose he was asked by some people in the school to talk at the primary school . One of the books promoted in my local public school which is about gay relationships features a picture of gay teen dressed as the Virgin of Guadalupe (sp?) with a sentence under it about "Will he give out?" I knew some conservative RC's who were going to the school board meeting yesterday to protest. I don't know what the outcome was.

The situation as I understand it, acknowledging that there is no credible data stream there to glean, is that Russian forces are gaining strategic leverage despite their lack of tactical success. Putin's conventional forces are showing a decided lack of tactical excellence, and are the absent minded professors of logistical prowess. The Ukies are unable to mount effective conventional operations of their own and their success is largely on the scale of the "war of the flea" from an FM 3-24 standpoint.

We are looking at a stalemate for the time being with a gradual closing of Russian momentum towards the major Ukie cities.

Posted by: Color Me Skeptical at March 16, 2022 10:03 AM (5T7tk)

455 From a grand strategy standpoint Ivan has already "won" in that the Ukies are now declaiming the desire to join NATO. It is a pyrrhic "victory" that leaves the perception of Russian power lesser than at day one. The Ukies "win" in the sense that ostensibly they will be outside the "Russian orbit" but as the Finns showed that means functionally your nation's foreign policy becomes "how do we not piss Russia off" for decades.

The "win" is Pyrrhic for Russia because at a minimum Sweden and Finland are now poised to openly join NATO so there is still the proximity issue Putin feared with the Ukraine joining.

From the American viewpoint given that two Security Council members will now make it their mission to deny America petro reserve status we are the nation that will "lose" the most.

It looks to me, if I can believe anything that I'm seeing - and that's no sure bet - that Russia can't project power for very long. That's a key thing to know, and not good for them that it's been revealed.

It also looks like, and this is a surprise to me, that the utility of armor has taken a downturn. I don't know if it's because missile tech has finally overtaken armor - or the Russians are just that bad logistically.

Posted by: Color Me Skeptical at March 16, 2022 10:12 AM (5T7tk)

460 Is there some reason you need to change your handle every two days, Scoggy?. Everybody knows it's you. I wasn't trying to do rhetorical flourishes. I was just pointing out the pattern. You lambast people for not accepting your point of view, make snide remarks about -and to them- if you think they rely too much upon their "feelz" which you evidently never do./sThe only thing I can think is you like being called out, or that you get a charge of about of being combative. It gives you energy or something. Are you chronically clinically depressed and that temporarily gets you out of it to be combative?

By the way, most people don't feel a need to change their handle every three days and the government already knows who are.

Ivan may not have enough ERA armor to deploy it large scale.

One thing to hesitate over drawing deep conclusions is the very real possibility that Ivan thought this was Sevastopol 2 Electric Boogaloo. The FSB, Russian diplomatic corps, and Spetsnaz all ran their playbooks to perfection back in 2014 on the hybrid war front. There is the very real possibility that they deluded themselves that the same criteria they had set for that success had been met and consequently when reality asserted itself they were caught flat-footed.

A federal government that has total control of the news cycle that deludes itself regarding facts on the ground.

Which may be a good question, but it is not the one the title of the essay proposes.
And it evades answering the original question on a raw realpolitik level, for which the answer might well be an accommodation with Putin, starting with Russian membership in NATO, in exchange for support against the Chinese and an end to funding subversives in the U.S.

1 and 2 are completely different, and officials explaining our "no action" response on 1 must emphasize that difference. Lord helps if they don't.
Acknowledging the horrendous effects on the Ukrainian people, we still have no critical interest in Ukraine.
We have critical interests in Taiwan. Intel USED to lead in semiconductor technology. Right now, they are running on 7nm tech. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is now running on a 5nm process. China is way back in the field at 20nm. We, quite simply, cannot allow China to access and control this tech. It would be a disaster militarily and economically.

It's past time to put Xi on notice, before he takes our inaction on Ukraine as a greenlight to invade Taiwan.
