A subject of the Hawk Lord, an osprey, goes fishing. Thanks to Glenn John for noting the actual type of birds in the post. I just kind of Media Lied because it was easier to lie than to find out the truth.

One of the wildest ones was a prairie falcon decapitating a duck, taking it's head clean off as it dives into it.

The local carnivals would have a side show where, after filling some small bleachers for $0.25/head, they would put a live mongoose in a pit with a live habu, an indigenous viper. Usually, but not always, the mongoose came out alive and the snake didn't. In retrospect, it was not the sort of thing you'd call respectable entertainment but there ya go.

77 Had a pair of Accipiters in my old neighborhood (suburb just north of Dallas) that were always hanging around. Might have nested because I saw an immature pair of them one Autumn about two years ago. They were bathing in puddle in street.
Definitely saw a Sharp shinned eating a mockingbird one morning.

94 Osprey nest set up on a platform at a nearby reservoir. There's almost always activity there when I walk by.

Big ol' Coopers hawk sometimes flies up and into one of the big trees out back. So far, no remains of victims found. Brother living in another part of town had the heads of redtails and rats and other critters littering his back yard when a Coopers hawk took up residence for a while.

Actually, they were really well designed. What went wrong was the breeders deciding they needed to have squatch little back legs. They basically bred in problems. Same with an awful lot of popular breeds. Bulldogs are basically unrecognizable from what they used to be.

Our daughter got pregnant while in college. She and the father decided to carry the child to term and then they placed him in an open adoption. He is now 15 and a half years old and we see him roughly once a year. (Our daughter interacts with him far more frequently, often by playing video games with him over the 'net.)

These days "pro choice" is the easy way to be in the in crowd, perhaps she hasn't thought it through.

I had some friends years ago, conservative and rational but pro-choice and we had a few discussions about it before it was a subject we didn't discuss. Some years later their first child was stillborn and was aborted, then a while after that I went to visit when their next pregnancy led to a healthy lovely daughter. They made a point of telling me they had come around to my views on the matter.

There are so many couples desperate to adopt a healthy newborn. Please seek out Catholic Social Services or another agency of your choice and do it now. Most folks will pay for the pregnancy and the adoption fees. Just do it.

More importantly neither would be my son, who saved many lives while in the army ,or my daughter, who just won a pro bono case getting a 3 year old removed from a sexually abusive parent.

Ha. I know plenty of couples who did exactly that, one or two were kids and with the grandparents help they worked it out. I know some people who were closer to 40. Most of them are still together today. Some aren't but what else is new. A very good friend of mine from high school, got married like that right out of high school. Both sets of parents helped out...so she finished her BS and her MD a year late. Three kids in all, that older boy is super, and the other two probably wouldn't be here if it weren't for him and everyone pulling together as a family. The second child is a doctor like her mom, and the younger girl is an accountant like dad. A baby is not a disaster, it's a good reason to make a change and a commitment.

But the hawk that has claimed the airspace over our yard has claimed 6-8 hens and one rooster in the last 3 years. If he ever lands in front of me...OOPS! did I say that out loud? back to lurking...

316 One last story. Another girl from high school, class of 75, gave up her baby for adoption. She got married about 10 years later, husband was infertile, so no kids. Somewhere around her 45th birthday, her son showed up and entered their lives. Yeah he had great adoptive parents, but now he has Jeannie and her husband too. He was the only child God and circumstances gave her. She could have gone the wrong way, and lived with the guilt and the knowing that she was not given another chance. She spends every day grateful instead.

A couple w/ 3 kids, she's pregnant w/ the fourth, loses the baby late. When you mourn and have a funeral. They're good liberals, they go to an adoption agency and say, We'll take a child with problems, alcohol syndrome, etc. The next week she calls and says, this isn't what you said, but think about it: a pregnant woman w/ 3 kids, whose husband was killed in a work accident. She can't see herself raising the baby, says, find me a family with lots of kids. They decided to take him.

Thank God. Because that's my son-in-law. A more joyous, family-oriented man could not be imagined. I look at my daughter and know how blessed her life is with him in it, and it makes it easier for me to be old, and know I won't share much more of it. Because he'll be there.
