GAINZZZ

I'm still doing my arm-weighted walks. And still fixin' to consider starting to ponder weightlifting again.

What about you? What are your GAINZZZ?

Any recommendations in books or TV? Any projects or plans you want to share?

Here's a recommendation. Sort of: Garth Merenghi's Darkplace. All six episodes (it's British) are on YouTube.

I recommend this with a caveat: It's not for everyone. You have to think a certain kind of meta humor is funny to enjoy it.

The show is about a trashy and incompetent but extremely narcissistic British horror author named Garth Merenghi. During the eighties, he tried to get a horror series produced on British TV, but he was refused by every company. So he put a small amount of his own money into it and self-financed his show.

Being a narcissist, he of course cast himself as the hero, Dr. Rick Dagless M.D., who everyone on the show is always complimenting for being so strong, so good-hearted, so giving, and so sexually virile. It's obviously a self-insert and wish fulfillment fantasy.

To save money, he cast his publisher, who cannot act at all, as the head of the hospital.

The show is about a hospital in which portals to hell have been opened. So, during their daily rounds of treating patients, they also have to confront demons and ghosts.

I think because it was the eighties, and cop shows ere popular, Garth Merenghi couldn't choose between a Hospital show and a Cop show so he chose both. All the male characters inexplicably carry guns and whip them out at the drop of a hat. There is no in-show explanation for this. They're never said to have a military background or anything.

That's just the Miami Vice vibe Garth Merenghi was feeling at the time.

The last part of the premise is that these episodes have only recently been rediscovered, and they're being aired with commentary from Merenghi and the other actors, talking about how great this terrible, terrible show is.

The first time I watched it I thought it was okay, but I was a little underwhelmed. But it's the kind of show that gets better on rewatches. Because it is aggressively weird. It takes some time to get on the same mental page as this very weird show.

For inspiration:

That inspires me to do the jerk and clean.

Yes, jerk and clean. I said what I said.

11 My heel still hurts after a walk of a mile or more, so I can't run. Trying to get back into the gym on a regular schedule, at least twice a week for front squats, romanian deadlifts, deadlifts, and pullups. Add in another two days a week of dumbbell squats, db overhead presses, and back lunges. Now that the weather is turning nice I've also added in some swordwork, basic cuts and such.

Love my drawing class. If I don't get a new job taking me out of the area soon, I might try to sign up for a few more art classes. Also getting back into swing dancing lessons.

Good luck, if your ankle started hurting as a result of the motion of the walk you can get past that after you heal up some by altering where your impact point on the gait is on the hurt foot.

Since you asked...I've been pimping the Moron-recommended 'The New Dealer's War', Fleming. I suppose an immediate reaction would be that such a history would not be, as the Progs say 'relevant'. On the contrary, it is a highly relevant, well-documented look at the way that Progressive thinking works, and how it has embedded itself within the government.

I strongly recommend the acquisition and reading.

Another in the sci-fi series I rather liked if only for its rather honest treatment of religion and freedom in the future is Daniel Gibbs' "Echoes Of War" series.

Of course, if you are a history buff and have STILL not read "Shattered Sword". . . . shame on you.

I just started re-watching Andromeda. Early 2000s show from Gene Roddenberry (posthumously) with a star trek vibe. TERRIBLE special effects and alien makeup, but nice simple sci fi stories, with a couple of interestingly original concepts thrown in here and there. No wokeness. Kevin Sorbo stars -- nobody idea of Sir Lawrence Olivier but a pleasant, solid focus for this kind of show. Plus a revolving cast of gorgeous Canadian babes in supporting and guest-starring roles.

76 Netflix has a good series running now: "The Last Kingdom", which is set around the time of King Alfred.

Ackshewallee, the first three seasons, when Alfred's still around are the best. They're a pretty clever blend of history and fiction.

The main character, Uthred, is a Saxon who was raised by Danes and prefers the Viking way, but is torn between the two worlds. Lots of fighting, intrigue and sur[prisingly intelligent writing.

The fourth and fifth seasons aren't terrible but more fiction and feminist wishfullfillment is creeping into the mix with practically every scrawny maiden grabbing a broadsword and jumping into the midst of battle against seasoned warriors.

Lots of manly men for you ettes, but us guys don't get much in the way of beautiful babes though there are some.

Anyway check it out.

Inspector ordered me a big package of whey protein and using a scoop a day has helped me balance the macros and also not be as likely to get sudden urges to eat. Other than that I haven't changed much and manage to be a little under the calorie cap (I opted for the slow loss set-up) every day.

Though not diabetic, the goal is to keep morning blood glucose readings in the low 80s, and not let meals get over 140.

Fats. Part of surviving 18/6 (with occasional 20/4) Intermittent fasts is to avoid carbs as your last meal since hours later you just get hungry. So right before the end of the window, I have had great luck with a block of cheese. Also removed all forms of sweetener since it seems to make one hungry.

Chromium also acts as a suppressant. The combination works so well that I my usual window 9AM-3PM can actually be 11AM-3PM.

One Jump Ahead, by Mark L. Van Name

It's fantastic. A guy gets nanobots in his bloodstream from an experiment where it was assumed he died, and he is out doing odd jobs and looking for revenge. Oh, and he can communicate with machines via the nanotechnology. Did I mention he finds a bleeding-edge warship that was loaned to a colony in case of pirate attacks?

Really fun book. I'd never heard of the guy and am so glad I picked it up.'

Recommended. Well worth a trip to the library.

It's unfortunate because those women are clearly fit and work hard.

My favorite are the squat videos filmed from the back where all you can see are the but cheeks. The angle provides very little information on forms, which is really important.

Ah, I apologize for misunderstanding. I know that some don't consider pilates a legitimate workout, and I can see their point of view, but as you say 'all movement is good' and I am by nature extremely sedentary.

337 I'm up to 150 push ups at three different heights for my feet several times a week.

And I'm up to 40 minutes jogging.

I didn't have any beer this year until today where I'm killing several big bottles. I'm going to have to go Islamic fundamentalist monk mode...meaning no booze at all.

And I have new friends who are absolutely amazing. I only make friends once a decade and our new neighbors are fantastic.

339 I only like about half of the Darkplace epsiodes, but those three that I do like I absolutely love. The first episode, the second episode (Liz gets psychokinetic powers), and the "eye child" episode are so incredibly funny.

If you like Darkplace, also check out _Man to Man with Dean Learner_ where Richard Ayoade continues to play the Dean Lerner character from Darkplace but each week interviews a different person, always played by Matthew Holness. One of those has Holness in character as Garth Marenghi and they show a clip from the new full-length Darkplace movie. It's hysterically good.

340 I had my first butter coffee yesterday, it was mighty good!

Thanks Ace!

341 I'm late on this but I finished my first screenplay. Action-adventure sci-fi with comedic elements, with a few 'downstream from culture' nudges. Out for reading and notes from a few friends.

342 Here's a recommendation. Sort of: Garth Merenghi's Darkplace. All six episodes (it's British) are on YouTube./i]

This is gold.

343 10 years ago at the age of 40 I started hitting the weight pile again and it is the best thing I ever did. I had bulging L4,5,6 disks where I couldn't be without pain all day. Squats stopped that within a week; they strengthen your glutes which straighten your spine. Been pain free. Never felt better in my life, honestly.

344 >>>And still fixin' to consider starting to ponder weightlifting again.
