The Morning Rant: Scattered Buck Shots – 02/28/2022

Bidenflation: “Market Pricing” on Fast Food

“Market pricing” on fast food is going to be a thing now, I guess.

One day this past week I strolled from my office to a nearby Panera to grab a sandwich to-go. I was given a paper menu without any prices on it. I inquired of the cashier about the lack of prices, and she responded that it’s because prices keep going up so fast. She instructed me to simply tell her what I’d like to order, then she’d ring it up and be able to tell me the price.

The very next day, I went to the drive-through at a regional burger/slider franchise. I ordered a $6.99 combo, which according to some quick mental math should have totaled up to about $7.65 with the 9.25% sales tax. But instead, the cashier told me my total was $7.93. I asked why the price was 30 cents higher than would be expected, and she responded that prices have gone up again, but because of staffing issues (four people had quit or didn’t show up) they can’t even get outside to update the price board.

Now that we’re living in Bidenzuela, merchants might just have to give up on trying to keep prices posted as they rise.

And while we’re talking about Biden’s inflation, the official government inflation rate is another example of our government being comically dishonest with us. The single-digit inflation rates being reported are a small fraction of the actual inflation rate. The 50-lb bag of dog food that I buy is one of my price barometers. It first crept over the $50 barrier about four years ago, staying in the low $50s until six months ago when the price surged to over $60. Last week it was $73! That jump from around $53 to $73 in one year represents one-year inflation of about 46%.

Another Ivy League Supreme Court Justice

I’ve been ready to post this since before Stephen Breyer announced his retirement.

President Biden just nominated [insert name of left wing radical] for the Supreme Court. A graduate of [insert Ivy League law school,] this selection is being hailed as an historic choice because [pronoun] will be the first [insert identity group] on the Supreme Court, making the court “more representative of America.”

There’s really no need to even fill in those blanks. We always knew it would be a radical leftist with an Ivy League law degree.

You know what would REALLY be more representative of America? Someone without an Ivy League mal-education.

Since it’s now a thing for Presidential candidates to promise which under-represented group is going to get the next Supreme Court nomination, maybe DeSantis or Trump could promise to represent me by vowing to put a non-Ivy Leaguer on the Court.

Speaking Of The Supreme Court And Affirmative Action

Supreme Court Will Hear Challenge to Affirmative Action at Harvard and U.N.C. (NY Times - 01/24/2022)

Harvard is going to have to defend its policy of discriminating against whites and Asians at the Supreme Court. Frankly, I think it’s time to consider an altogether different option.

How about this? Any school that wishes to discriminate against whites and Asians should be allowed to do so, but only on the condition that they go all the way, by instituting a complete and total ban on any and all whites and all Asians.

The banned students would all find someplace else to go to school, just like all the non-elites who are currently being discriminated against do, and they would still have every opportunity to succeed based on their merits. A world without privileged, white, well-connected graduates from “elite” universities has a lot of appeal.

And don’t forget, Yale was founded by a slave-trader. In the spirit of reparations, it seems only reasonable that Yale should never allow another white person into one of its hallowed classrooms.

Gentry Liberals Are Always The Victim

In uncertain times like these, please don’t forget the true victims, gentry liberals who listen to NPR.

NPR - Ukraine.JPG

That drawing of a man lying in a fetal position definitely captures my mental image of the typical NPR listener.

So how does NPR suggest its delicate listeners cope with the news from Ukraine? With safe spaces of course.

Nourish yourself. The kitchen is a safe space for a lot of us.

Please say a prayer too for the gentry leftists of Ottawa. Although the truckers’ street party has since departed, Ottawans who identify as being victims are having to deal with “phantom honking.”

Putting another black justice on the SCOTUS is actually going to make blacks over-represented on the high court.

Blacks are around 12% of the total U.S. population. There is already one black (Clarence Thomas) on the 9-member court. Clarence thus represents 11.11% of the Supreme Court, which is as close to "representative" as one could hope to get.

Putting another black justice on the court will increase blacks' representation to more than 22%, which is obviously NOT representative and does NOT make the court "look more like America" because it significantly over-represents blacks.

Meanwhile, there has never been a justice of Asian descent on the court, even though they make up a substantial portion of our population, and an even greater proportion of our top educational achievers.

To have positive cash flow from it you need to raise as it's going up (because you're constantly buying to replace). If you're marking it against your purchase price +3% (or some number like that) you revenue and cost lines will both be upward sloping with a margin in between them that you make. If you sell based on the time you bought in the face of rising prices, the cost of new purchases could exceed what you're bringing in from current sales. Eventually that ought to meet up in theory but it makes cash management difficult in the interim.

My wife and I left without buying anything.

94 Because of Ottawa and the freezing of accounts, I'm still working on getting money out of banks...specifically money locked into items for years.

I really do believe we are having a massive bank run here. People I know and a couple of people I met are taking everything they can out. RBC branches closed down for the first time ever because of 'Covid' last week, an ATM was dry yesterday in our very small town - I never heard of that happening before, Toronto Dominion's website where you can buy gold and silver was all sold out of everything last night but is apparently restocked now. A bunch of weird crap.

You don't implement an Act meant for war and withdraw it less than 48 hours later unless the banks were hemorrhaging money. I'm sure all kinds of behind the scenes things are going on to make things look like normal to everyone. But come on, they froze bank accounts on a whim!! System killed in one hour.

And a Canadian financial system collapse sure won't help anything in the US....

210 I learned from watching My 600 lb. Life that morbidly obese people almost exclusively eat fast food. Huge quantities of it, all day every day. I keep hearing the excuse that fast food is "cheap" so that's one of the reasons they buy so much of it. Fast food is NOT a cheap way to eat, especially in mass quantities and in Bidenflation times, but it was never economically feasible to make it the mainstay of your diet.

I can think of a number of meals easy to make, healthier for you than fast food, and way less expensive. It's annoying to see the land whales whining they can't afford to eat any other way. Bake a potato, steam some broccoli, throw a little cheese on it, ffs.

270 210 I learned from watching My 600 lb.

273 My Morning Rant.

In announcing a "tentative end" to NYC's draconioan masking policies, Eric Adams said:

"...he said that the city is taking the week "to give business owners the time to adapt while we monitor the numbers to ensure we are making the best public health decisions for the people of New York."

Now. Announce the end of mandates NOW. Because I am sick to fvcking death of this #TwoWeeks bullshit. You know how long it takes a business to "adapt" to not requiring masking? Now. They rip the signs off the front doors and haul in the sandwich board sign. Now. It takes exactly NOW to do that. Not two weeks. Not one week. Now. That's how long it takes to fvcking "adapt."

You know how long it took them to "adapt" to masking? They sure did that pretty goddam fvcking fast. Overnight, as I recall.

I don't want to hear one more thing about "tentaive" this and Two Weeks that. I want to hear the words "I am ending it NOW" or it means less than nothing to me. Two years of this horseshit.

I've been reading elsewhere, and found some good thoughts proposing that the reason Putin has run into so much trouble, and appears to have woefully underestimated the level of force he would need to win, is that Putin has *never* fought against a serious Army before. He's attacked the Chechens with special forces, he's mucked about in Syria, and Georgia, but *none* of those opponents had the weapons or organization to mount a serious threat. Since 2014, Ukraine has been upgrading it's military, and it obviously is performing much better than Putin thought it would.

Honest question - what makes for a better coach/GM? Super talent, or a grinder?
Posted by: 2009Refugee at February 28, 2022 12:15 PM (e2C66)

Playing talent sure doesn't. Rogers Hornsby was manager of several teams, none successful. The Tigers teams Ty Cobb managed never finished higher than third. Branch Rickey was not much as a player or manager, but a brilliant GM.

401 BarackObama
It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since Trayvon Martin was killed. Leading up to this anniversary, I reflected on what his death meant to me as president, as a Black parent, and as a Black man-as well as what it meant for our country.
___________

Yes, by all means let's reflect on that death. A 17-yo black thug and gangsta street fighter-wannabe, unwanted by his biological parents and temporarily stashed at his dad's latest GF's apartment after his biological mother threw him out, was angry and frustrated. He went to the local convenience store to buy the ingredients to make "lean" and a blunt (so he could smoke his stash of MJ). On the way home he sees a fat whitish guy looking at him suspiciously, and gets pissed. He walks away, then circles back and sneaks up on the fat guy, sucker punching him hard enough to break his nose and knock him down. Trayvon straddles the guy and starts reining down MMA-style blows as the guy screams futilely for help. No help comes, so fat guy takes out his gun and shoots Trayvon in the chest one time. Trayvon's last words are "tell mama 'licia (stepmother Alicia, the only parental figure who'd loved him) I'm sorry."

Posted by: TrivialPursuer--F*ck Joe Biden at February 28, 2022 12:35 PM (k4dH2)

402 The scumbag media took Trayvon's unfortunate death and created a ludicrous racial narrative around it, some of which is still believed by millions of low-information Americans to this day. Trayvon wasn't shot for being a black kid, he wasn't shot for wearing a hoodie, he wasn't shot in the back, he wasn't shot while skipping home with a pocketful of Skittles, he wasn't shot by a "white supremacist" or any of the other mountain of lies peddled by the race-baiters.

Trayvon was shot because he was out at night, getting up to no good, because he didn't have a stable home life and parents who cared about him and guided him and taught him good values. He'd had one such parent for a few years, his caring step-mother Alicia, but he'd been yanked out of her home after his father found himself a new squeeze and broke up that family.

So by all means Obama, let's talk about why so many black kids have unstable home lives, why so many fail or quit school, why so many turn to drugs for escape, why so many choose lives of violence and crime. Oh, but that's not what you meant, Obama, is it?

Posted by: TrivialPursuer--F*ck Joe Biden at February 28, 2022 12:35 PM (k4dH2)

403 Why in the world would anyone think that the ability to hit and throw a baseball really well implies the ability to manage the business end of a baseball team?
What's really interesting is why pro sports are not dominated by the offspring of earlier star athletes. You would think the genetics would help. The fact that star athletes usually breed with desireable (physically healthy) women. Growing up in the world and having access to all the facilities so the mileau is normal and not intimidating. Insider tips from your dad and his friends. Yet, although there are a few cases, its not prevalent in a mostly physical field. Kind of continues to point out that hereditary aristocracy doesn't work out so well along with all the other evidence.

406 An Ivy League Law education is not evidence that a person has been miseducated. It's law school, not undergrad. Say what you want about womens' studies and whatnot. Those are the best lawschools that pull the best professors and short list graduates to the most prestigious firms/clerkships.

I mean, do you think Scalia was miseducated at Harvard Law? Or Alito and Thomas at Yale? Rehnquist went to Stanford Law which is Ivy in all but location.

I'm a lawyer, and I did not go to one of those schools. Yes, I have run into graduates of them and no, they aren't all geniuses. But no lawyer can say they wouldn't have gone to Harvard or Yale Law School if they could have.
