The CDC To Relax Masking Rules -- Just Before Brandon's State of the Union

I've been mentioning that the Ruthless podcast guys predicted that Brandon would announce an end to school masking rules during the SOTU. Their evidence was that Brandon had played games with human lives when he set the date for the Afghan withdrawal for the symbolic date of 9/11 -- despite the fact that this was during the fighting season -- the fighting season being from spring to late fall. It would have made far more sense to withdrawal during the winter, when the weather would act as an allied force to check the Taliban's advance, but Brandon wanted his Historic Date Stunt.*

And so he Killed Some Folks. They talk about that with Megyn Kelly starting at 18:45.

Based on that, the Ruthless podcast guys reasoned that Brandon had the CDC's Walenski and the NIAID's Fauci talking about maybe, possibly relaxing the mask guidance "soon" and "in the near future" for the past couple of months, in order to appease Democrat politicians who are fearful of getting shellacked over the issue, while absolutely refusing to actually change the guidance.

Until, that is, he could announce its end during the State of the Union.

Well, it sure does look like the Ruthless guys were 100% right, because just five day before Tuesday night's SOTU, the CDC leak it to the Washington Post that they'll be changing their "guidance."

Note they are still refusing to undo the masking recommendations that the teachers unions and crazed Karens demand -- they won't actually say that people can stop wearing masks, or that Dirty Filthy Children can stop wearing masks.

They'll just push the decision off to local boards of health, to decide based on local covid hospitalization rates.

But this will still sound like some kind of progress at the State of the Union.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will soon loosen its mask guidelines by weighing metrics such as hospital capacity and coronavirus admissions, rather than simply looking at case counts, so more people can feel comfortable going maskless in indoor public spaces, according to two senior administration officials and two people familiar with the plans.
The change comes weeks after numerous states, including those led by Democratic governors, announced plans to lift mandates as omicron cases drop sharply. But states have long been pressing the agency for better guidelines to inform their decisions to ease restrictions, the officials said.
The CDC could announce the new guidelines as soon as Friday, according to the Associated Press. A CDC spokeswoman declined to say when the CDC would announce its updated guidance.

But you'll announce them by Tuesday night though, right? Maybe put out a press release by 5pm, early enough to make it to the 6:30 pm nightly newscasts, and in time for Brandon to mention during his 9pm address?

I don't agree with the Vulgar Marxism of the left. "Vulgar Marxism" is an epithet applied to Marxist/leftist thinking that attempts to explain behavior in the capitalist west in the crudest way possible: "Oh, of course that happened, someone's just making money from that."

No matter how far-fetched it might be that someone was doing X for money might be. Thus, the adjective "Vulgar" in the phrase. The thinking is vulgar, crude, unrefined, reflexive. Stupid, even by the debased terms of typical Marxism.

But Russel Brand did make a Vulgar Marxist point I said "Hmmmm" to:

His point was that the west, which pays for vaccines, is pretty much all vaxed up, as far as adults go. The market is saturated. The only unvaccinated adults are those who can't be vaccinated or won't be vaccinated.

The only adults yet unvaccinated are in the third world, who are charity cases, to whom vaccines must be donated for zero cost, or else sold for just above cost.

But you know who you can get vaccinated, still, and get paid money for, at full costs, no discounts?

Kids. Kids in the wealthy west.

So thus the push to vaccinate not just kids, but kids as young as two years old.

Five years ago, hell, two years ago, I would have said, "No way, your pinko paranoia is getting the best of you."

But now...?

25 I had on my mask on when I entered our local Royal Bank of Canada branch today for an appointment. But the entire branch was closed.

The guy at the ATM, who was still wearing his mask, said almost all of the surrounding RBC's were closed.

Apparently, all of these heavily masked people are all sick. I'm sure it's not a bank run.

26 I don't think anyone in my area cares about masking anymore. Stores still have signs saying they strongly recommend them for unvaccinated, but no one is checking vaxx status and no one looks twice at you if you don't wear one.

I do feel bad for the employees who have to wear a mask according to corporate policy, though.

38 This is still bad for the Karens. My school district is moving toward "mask optional". There was a meeting recently with teachers on an unrelated matter -- two moms used the opportunity to force a discussion about masks.

Specifically, they want their kids to be made to wear masks at school and are worried that if their kids see a bunch of other kids not wearing masks, it will make them not want to wear them either.

So they want the teachers to wear masks, as an example . This went over with a mixed reaction among the teachers, many of whom don't want to wear masks either.

Biden's political "science" ruined these people and (worse) is harming their kids.

Fine. Local pressure is meaningful on local authorities. And *all* of these institutions - from corporate policymakers to school boards to state/local public health boards and so on - fall back on "but CDC guidance says..." If that crutch is removed, then the major backstop vanishes and these institutions have to answer directly to their constituents and customers as to *why* these requirements are in place, and to justify them on their own merits without that "but the CDC says ..." fallback.

Without that backstop, a lot of these institutions likely can't hold up.

Lucky you. My company dug in and continued their mandate. The new company didn't, they just went with the fence-sitting approach of "we would like you to get the shot and provide your paperwork, but we won't mandate it."

But this same phenomenon is why companies, especially those open to the public, love either mask/vax mandates *or* prohibitions on mask/vax mandates, and love them equally. So long as there is a mandate, one way or another, they don't have to stand by the decision and back it up and handle criticism. The thing they - and local governments, school boards, etc. - fear most is having to *choose* and then defend that choice when challenged. Not being able to kick upstairs to someone more distant and less accountable fills them with rage and terror.

One of the people in my company in Hong Kong has Covid and is in "quarantine". Example of quarantine related by another co-worker...somewhere in Asia (that's a big place).

....for example in "blank" wife's case. She stays in the room that has en-suite. She cannot come out. Food is left at the door and she picks it up after "blank" walks away. "blank" is supposed to sanitize the place. She has to take the antigen rapid test (ART) and if it is negative, she can leave the room. Usually a few days to two weeks -- depending on how soon she recovers and tested negative.

No way. His drug cocktail will be dialed in very well. I suspect this was one reason (a secondary one, but nonetheless) for his marathon two-hour press conference last month. They needed to dial in his drug routine and observe its effects. They learned a lot, as did anyone paying attention. That cocktail and rest regimen, whatever it was, gave him a *very* good (for Biden) 90 minutes, another 15 of decaying competence, and 10 of disastrous reversion to the norm. Now they know. I suspect they'll run the same playbook, maybe with a tweak or two, and cap the address at 75 minutes or 90 at the outside.

My kid's school has been mask optional for the entire year. We've had football, marching, basketball, soccer, hockey, volleyball, softball......EVERYTHING since August.

No issues. Have there been illnesses? Yes. We had to shut down for 5 days (weekend mixed in) due to omicron and too many calling in sick, but other than weather, it's been open since.

Same where I am. Omicron tore through like a tornado and nailed a ton of folks and some schools had to be out of session due to staff outages and a lot of private sector work (like HVAC, in my direct experience) backed up because of people being out sick. Hit my dad and then my mom and me.

357 My kids' schools had optional mask policies since the beginning of the 2020 school year. Initially the vast majority of kids were wearing them. Then month by month the % got lower and lower. When the 2021 school year started the percentage was down to 15-20%. And now it's about 10%.

Sadly though, the teachers all are still wearing theirs. Probably a union thing.

I had a professor of German history who went off on a tangent about how in the US, it's the norm for the poor man (and the black man, of course!) to fight the rich man's wars. I called her out on it, because it isn't true. Demographically, the upper middle class and the rich are over-represented, as are blacks - but blacks aren't carrying whitey's weight, they're carrying the Asians' weight (relatively few Asians in the armed forces). She immediately told me that if I was going to make a claim like that, I'd have to write a paper - for no credit - to demonstrate it.

I called her bluff and did so. She handed it back with all sorts of commentary about how the richer families being over-represented is a nuance to better understand because those people are just setting up for political careers - and that people "like us" need to be aware of how to respond to those arguments.

I've never seen a group of people more convinced that everyone agrees with them than college professors.

She could easily have turned it against Biden by diving into her role, visiting the border, speaking with CBP agents, NGOs, refugees, etc., before announcing a compromise plan with the GOP that funded wall construction and increased border patrol in exchange for some sort of pathway for Dreamers.

I remember learning about that decades ago. Heck, my germ-o-phobe partner had showed me an article about how those little pillow mints they have at the restaurant checkstand have urine and other goodies on them due to the proximity of the restrooms. Indianapolis Public Schools is making some changes to the district's COVID-19 protocols as cases decline across the country.

Starting Monday, Feb. 28, face masks will be optional for students, staff and visitors at IPS facilities. Also, the district announced that they will be ending social distancing, contact tracing and quarantine protocols in schools.

Despite the change, a federal mandate means masks are still required on the bus before and after school.

I grew up in one of those suburban areas I mentioned above. The decision of what to do after graduation wasn't college or military or go to work. College was the next step. It automatic like going from 11th to 12th grade. The military was not a thing, might as well have not existed because it was treated like a non entity by everyone.

Jordan Peterson has a great lecture on Youtube about this. Basically the military has spend decades supporting research into intelligence, because stupid soldiers end up costing you a lot more in lives and money than smart ones. They would much prefer a 105 IQ recruit than a 95 IQ one, and anyone below 80 can't enlist. It's simply not worth the time and money to try and train him.
