Johns Hopkins Study: Lockdowns Saved No Lives and Only Destroyed Jobs.

Strangely enough, Johns Hopkins buried this important study. They did not alert the press with a big press conference. I think I heard they did not even send out a press release under the university's banner.

It's almost like the official establishment knows that it has committed a grave, lethal error and does not want to draw attention to it.

Like it wants to hide its errors. Like it wants the public to continue believing bad science.

You know -- like real scientists always do!

"Lockdowns should be rejected out of hand," is the study's blunt topline finding.

First, the large amount of data they crunched:

This systematic review and meta-analysis are designed to determine whether there is empirical evidence to support the belief that "lockdowns" reduce COVID-19 mortality.

Lockdowns are defined as the imposition of at least one compulsory, non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI). NPIs are any government mandate that directly restrict peoples' possibilities, such as policies that limit internal movement, close schools and businesses, and ban international travel.

This study employed a systematic search and screening procedure in which 18,590 studies are identified that could potentially address the belief posed. After three levels of screening, 34 studies ultimately qualified. Of those 34 eligible studies, 24 qualified for inclusion in the meta-analysis.

They were separated into three groups: lockdown stringency index studies, shelter-in-place order (SIPO) studies, and specific NPI studies.

The conclusion:

An analysis of each of these three groups support the conclusion that lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality.

More specifically, stringency index studies find that lockdowns in Europe and the United States only reduced COVID-19 mortality by 0.2% on average.

0.2%.

For 0.2%, we locked ourselves down for a year and a half.

Two years, really -- we're still locked down.

SIPOs [helter-in-Place-Orders] were also ineffective, only reducing COVID-19 mortality by 2.9% on average. Specific NPI studies also find no broad-based evidence of noticeable effects on COVID-19 mortality.

Even shelter-in-place orders, actual orders to remain in your homes, only managed a 2.9% reduction in deaths.

While this meta-analysis concludes that lockdowns have had little to no public health effects, they have imposed enormous economic and social costs where they have been adopted. In consequence, lockdown policies are ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument.

Remember those models that UK jive turkey Neil Fergusen panicked the world with? The ones showing, what was 2.2 million dead without his lockdown scheme by October 2020, but only 200,000 dead (IIRC) if we imposed the lockdown?

I remember AllahPundit being a huge, huge fan of Ferguson's models. I mean, you could see why he was impressed. There were numbers and such, and bar graphs, a few pie charts if you were feeling snack-ish, and an x-axis, and oh yeah, a y-axis to go with the x-axis.

It was really done up nice and proper, no fooling, real impressive and all. Looked pretty as a Sunday picnic.

And I mean, Ferguson took this so seriously he immediately looked at his models and said, "Hey, my models are telling me I should break lockdown and go to the home of my lover who lives with her completely different family group including her husband, and bang her."

And the model told him to do that, and so he did.

Models. Gotta love 'em!

I wonder if AllahPundit is a fan of the climate change models now, too.

Some of the countries that were the least locked-down had the lowest levels of morality:

Mandates only regulate a fraction of our potential contagious contacts and can hardly regulate nor enforce handwashing, coughing etiquette, distancing in supermarkets, etc. Countries like Denmark, Finland, and Norway that realized success in keeping COVID-19 mortality rates relatively low allowed people to go to work, use public transport, and meet privately at home during the first lockdown. In these countries, there were ample opportunities to legally meet with others.

Well I don't understand that. Ferguson's models said that most of them should have died.

So because Ferguson spent so much time on his models, probably took like a couple of weeks on them, and probably took a good few hours printing them out at Kinko's with nice clear plastic covers and colored tab dividers, real sharp looking stuff, all the Smart People decided that all of the rich people would isolate in their homes while all of the poor people kept working and delivering food and pleasure goods to the rich people except that the gyms and and "non-essential businesses" would be shut down, which meant that all of the poor people who didn't work delivering food and pleasure goods to rich people would lose their businesses.

It was a really really good plan and all the Smart People who owned stock in Amazon and Netflix made out like absolute thieves.

Everyone else, not so much.

But the Smart People all say it was the Smart thing to do and they had that neat looking model printed up, so.

Anyway, these researchers say that one of the reasons they launched this meta-analysis was that they couldn't help but notice that when countries imposed lockdowns, their death rates did not change very much -- in stark contrast to what Ferguson's precious models modeled that they would.

A third factor that motivated our research was the fact that there was no clear negative correlation between the degree of lockdown and fatalities in the spring of 2020 (see Figure 2).

Given the large effects predicted by simulation studies such as Ferguson et al. (2020), we would have expected to at least observe a simple negative correlation between COVID-19 mortality and the degree to which lockdowns were imposed.

You know, now that I think about it, weird thing about the models -- AllahPundit really believed in them, really believed that 2.2 million would die by October 2020 if we didn't lock down, but if we did lock down, only 200,000 would die.

Funny thing though: Sometimes Trump would rely on those models. Sometimes Trump would say, "They said if we didn't lock down, 2.2 million people would die. We locked down. Only 300,000 (or whatever the number was at the time) died. So I saved 1.9 million lives."

The math worked. If you believed the models, Trump was right.

But the weird thing is, AllahPundit, who really seemed to believe in the models when he was demanding we all adopt his shut-in, live-on-the-computer lifestyle, suddenly seemed to stop believing in the model's predictive capacity when Trump followed the model's predictions and said he saved 1.9 million people.

Suddenly Allah seemed to think the model was a total pile of lies whose numbers could not be trusted. Like it was just stupid to even talk about the numbers in the model. Like only an idiot would bring those numbers up and talk about them as if they had any relationship to reality.

Like, just some bullshit that some dumb horny nerd made up to get his sex partner alone more often.

I never understood that, how sometimes the models could be Oh My God You Guys This Model Is Totally Real I'm So Serious and other times it could be Just Another Trump Lie, It's Sulfurous Like The Devil's Farts.

Weird.

Maybe some copies of the model were incomplete. Maybe Kinko's screwed up Trump's copy. Maybe there was a collation error. I dunno.

I just know the numbers were real when Neil Ferguson or Anthony Fauci talked about them but were filthy lies when Trump referenced them.

But Allah was totally about The Science and not just taking increasingly deranged positions based on his psychopathic hostility to Trump and all Republicans who didn't want to vote for Hillary Clinton and then Joe Biden.

"What does the evidence tell us about the effects of lockdowns on
mortality?" We provide a firm answer to this question: The evidence fails to confirm that lockdowns have a significant effect in reducing COVID-19 mortality. The effect is little to none.

The use of lockdowns is a unique feature of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns have not been used to such a large extent during any of the pandemics of the past century. However, lockdowns during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic have had devastating effects. They have contributed to reducing economic activity, raising unemployment, reducing schooling, causing political unrest, contributing to domestic violence, and undermining liberal democracy. These costs to society must be compared to the benefits of lockdowns, which our meta-analysis has shown are marginal at best. Such a standard benefit-cost calculation leads to a strong conclusion: lockdowns should be rejected out of hand as a pandemic policy instrument.

Hey, speaking of Allah, I wonder who covered this at Hot Air -- John Sexton or Karen Townsend?

Nah, I'm sure AllahPundit will cover this. Like all good liberals, he "Loves The Science," and he surely wouldn't ignore a major finding just because of some unhinged partisan neener-neenerism. After all, he's also always telling us how much he abhors "tribalism," especially in his enemies. He's always telling us about the dangers of tribalism in every hot-button culture war issue he leaps at the opportunity with bloody single-mindedness to offer an Own the Cons Hot Take on.

So yeah, I'm sure his coverage will be forthcoming, and majestic.

Very related: Alberta, Sasketchewan announce an end to nearly all covid restrictions.

Not immediately, alas, but soon.

Canada's chief public health officer says provinces are going to have to find a balance between containing the virus with public health measures and returning to a sense of normalcy as the Omicron wave continues to crest.

Several provinces have signalled their intention to do away with some, if not all, remaining COVID-19 health restrictions.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says his government will announce next week a date to end Alberta's COVID-19 vaccine passport, as well as a phased approach to ending almost all COVID-19 health restrictions by the end of the month, provided the pressure on hospitals continues to decline.

Meanwhile Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says he's committed to ending all COVID-19 restrictions soon, even while COVID-19-related hospitalizations are at their highest level since the pandemic began.

Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said even a complete series of two COVID-19 vaccines offers little in the way of protection against infection from the Omicron variant, and boosters work against transmission only for a period of time.

She said vaccine mandates should be re-evaluated over time, but they must be weighed against the potential effect on fragile health systems and how many serious cases they can handle.

Exit question: Did the truckers win?

Exit answer: Yes.

truckerconvoymeme.jpg

And that's bad because they're not The Smart People who have nearly an unbroken record of being completely 100% wrong on every major question for the past 30 years.

But they have majestically-creased trousers and this makes their astonishingly large list of serious, life-taking mistakes elegant and refined and sophisticated and urbane, which is infinitely preferable to the crude, boorish, vulgar correctness of the Deplorables and scruffy populists.

We "knew" it was a mistake, but now there are hard numbers. Cloth masks are similar. Zero Covid true believers still defend masks because they tell themselves, "they're not as good as I'd like, but they do some good." It's nice to be able to hit them with real numbers from the CDC that say they're practically useless in their stated function and harmful because they hold a wet cloth over your face that collects some seriously nasty viruses and bacteria.

There seems to be a legal way to stop this shit...

Here is more information on this Surety Bond tactic:

https://bondsforthewin.com/

When a claim is filed against an elected official's surety bond by a citizen, the elected official is personally liable for a large deductible ($40,000) for each claim while the Insurance company investigates the claim. Instantly, the mask mandate is no longer a game for these people. Anyone can do this and no attorney is needed.
Here's the full story of a mom who successfully used this tactic to overturn mask mandates in her county:

143 Yet it didn't fucking work, and it was obvious that it didn't work. Moreover, the models were wrong in another dimension: severity. They were wrong on transmissibility, they were wrong on danger, they were wrong on response effects, they were wrong on literally everything.

The model was so wrong in fact that acting in 180 degree opposition to it may have resulted in better outcomes.

148 Just because for years and years various entities of the deep state wrote white papers about it and others wrote entire books and went on Ted Talks to expound about how a virus pandemic would be the perfect instrument to bring the world under totalitarian control, and then they did it, doesn't mean it was all a premeditated op.
Oh, wait. Yes, it was. It all was, and is.

Posted by: gourmand du jour at February 04, 2022 03:22 PM (jTmQV)

149 And what is so infuriating about this is that it was so obvious so long ago. Even if you're just an armchair hobbyist with some stats knowledge and passing familiarity with math (I am one of these, for whatever that's worth), it was obvious by April or May of 2020 that none of this shit mattered.

It's easy. Just take jurisdictions that locked down and didn't, that masked and didn't. Find the date of the rule and look at +|- 4 weeks from that date. Look at the test positivity rate, the mortality rate and the hospitalization rate. Control for population if you want to, but doing rates in each jurisdiction is a pretty good first step.

Then see what happens. And what happens when you do that? No correlation. There was no difference between lockdown jurisdictions and non-lockdown jurisdictions. There was no difference between mask jurisdictions and non-mask jurisdictions. Some were higher, some were lower, but all are within the margin of error with a slight *negative* correlation, though not significant.

And this was plainly obvious by May of 2020 and utterly unquestionable (zero opposing data points) by August of 2020.

It uses something like that, I'm sure. The CRU climate models did, too. The problem is getting results that are outside the boundaries that the statistics and stochastics would indicate and having those extreme results often be non-reproducible because the software just doesn't work well, is poorly programmed and poorly documented so no one can really figure out how it works.

It's going to take a long time to sort out what's happened, and none of the disruption was necessary or even justifiable/

246 Let's say you have an object with an unknown number of equal sides with sequential numbers on them.

You have a question, what are the odds the object "rolls" a five?

You decide to assume that the object has six sides. Your model then tells you the answer is 1 in 6.

This is what modeling is like, with usually a low level understanding that you're choosing assumptions at all.

257 Could just be using Monte Carlo simulations.

How many people here know what that means ? I'll bet not many. So here it goes.

A Monte Carlo sim is where you write a math model - as simple as two variable, X and Y, just like your high school days in geometry - and then you put random numbers into the X. The only trick is, the X is within bounds, that's the "genius" of a Monte Carlo sim. It's not truly random - it's bounded by the author.

So your health experts write a sim, which could be entirely skewed toward a certain outcome - but hey, it's "randomized". As much as the randomized seeds are limited by the bounds the author created.

Great fucking way to determine public policy. No way to skew that shit at all.

There is no doubt in my mind about this. The number of old people in nursing homes who got dementia because of their treatment and lockdowns are probably close to the total number of actual COVID deaths all on their own. Then there's the deaths of despair (drug overdose, suicide, alcohol-related deaths, etc.), the deferred or absent medical treatment, rise in obesity and heart problems as a result, etc.

I have no doubt that the cure was worse than the disease, which is made all the worse because the cure didn't work in the first place.

Most problems in policy do not involve a 'right' answer because people differ on tradeoffs and will promptly only consider evidence that supports their policy preferences. Policymakers should know better but are human. So, the policy choice all becomes who is superior in power to impose their narrative on the other side regardless of the facts. The facts are used like lawyers in order to present their case that their chosen policy is 'correct'. There is no recognition that most research is probabilistic in its findings and subject to revision.

The point of Monte Carlo sims isn't the randomization, but that it allows you to combine distributions. Avoids overly cumbersome matrix multiplication.

Like if you have a bunch of possible states, multiplied by a bunch more possible states, multiplied by a bunch more possible states that all go into the final outcome.

Yup, ditto. I got it (have it now). It sucks. I am one of the vast majority that is doing okay so far, and it's likely I got the new hotness version that isn't so bad. I was just resigned to it. Why was I resigned to it? Because I am living my life and all data I could find indicated that none of the responses worked. But the COVID terror for so many is very real. To some degree, I even get it because if you're very physically weak or very old or both, it can be really bad. If you're in that situation, you should really try to not get sick (whether the 'Vid or the flu).

But that is not reason enough to burn down the world and engender a culture of terror in vast cross-sections of the population.

It came out recently that the number of COVID deaths in the US with no co-morbidities was...50K.

We know every death *with* COVID was counted as a death *from* COVID, so that means the low count for deaths over the last two years is 50k. Which is...lower then the "seasonal flu".

That doesn't mean the real number isn't higher, but it is basically impossible to assess between the current touted number and 50K because the data has been intentionally spoiled.

But one of the best things to help yourself be *not* compromised is having enough Vitamin D. And a lot of people in the industrialized world are chronically Vitamin D deficient, because so many people are indoors all the time. And this is so easy to fix. 356 I think that was Obama's mistake. When he pitched Chicago as an Olympic site, he didn't have the baksheesh, just assumed his wonderfulness and golden tongue was going to seal the deal.
----------------

It's worse than that. His Duskiness was too stupid to realize the European leaders YEARN for the opportunity to stick it up an American President's ass. It's a guaranteed bump in the polls for them.

By involving himself, he absolutely guaranteed that they would rule out Chicago. Doing what an American President wants done is electoral poison in Europe. It makes the European politician look like a lap dog.

Which they are. They just don't like to be made to look like one.

362 311 The flu disappeared last winter because masks work! The flu is back this year because no one wears their mask!

That's part of it-- it's *possible* that masking and other Covid protocols worked well against influenza (but not, you know, Covid). It's also possible that Covid could displace and out-compete the flu and then take up its niche. I assume many Covid cases were actually flu, but that's only a guess.

Anyway, no one seemed to really ask what was going on. And apparently this winter, flu is back. So i dunno.

378 The point of Monte Carlo sims isn't the randomization, but that it allows you to combine distributions. Avoids overly cumbersome matrix multiplication. Like if you have a bunch of possible states, multiplied by a bunch more possible states, multiplied by a bunch more possible states that all go into the final outcome.

If you can't quantify all those eventualities ? Then the sim you just wrote is fantasy - randomizing shit doesn't help, with all the computers in the world.

Might as well go count poker hands in the Gardena card room. Which is exactly what Dave Sklansky did in "On Poker". And that's a much more intellectually honest way to arrive at a measured result - in his case, the value of starting hands versus pot size - that you can't mathematically derive.

If you can't do the math - how exactly is the model supposed to give an accurate result ? By determining the bounds ? For anything other than simple, objective things like cards or dice - nobody can define those bounds with any degree of precision that can yield anything useful. Because, if they could, they'd know how to describe the bounds mathematically.

Man, that looks good. This kind of footage reminds me of what happened when we had wildfires in CO. When we had bad fires, we had lots of firefighters from all over the place and feeding them was a challenge. The community largely handled it. Restaurants and people bringing lots of food out to the fireman camps. The big outfits like the supermarket got involved, too, but largely on infrastructure - like providing reefer trucks to keep it all cold.

Nice to see.

The Monte Carlo just lets you add distributions together, such as if you wanted to describe probable total costs for several independent projects that each have their own estimate. You can "roll" on their individual cost tables a bunch of times and add them up to create a new distribution as opposed to trying to multiply them out.

The outputs are all ultimately built into the assumptions themselves, which is the part people lose focus on. All probability is conditional.

All lockdowns did is push the inevitable down the road, at a great economic, psychological and political cost. Eventually everyone will be infected and almost everyone will survive.

Yup. The entire point was to avoid overwhelming hospitals. It wasn't to stop the spread, it wasn't to keep people from getting it, it was just to keep so many people from getting it all at once that the hospitals would collapse under the pressure.

And it was clear by Easter that the hospitalization rate was nowhere near as bad as feared. I think I am in the minority here, but I think a lot of the initial response was blind terror and "throw the kitchen sink at it" rather than an artificial op. By Easter of 2020, however, it was obvious that hospital exhaustion was not a risk and all of this shit should have ended. If there is a "start date" for this being a full-blown op run for nefarious purposes, that's it in my mind.

True, although the honest proponents of the lockdown (of which there were damn few) said it would save some lives because otherwise hospitals would get overwhelmed and people would needlessly die. That never happened (in spite of repeated attempts by the media to insist that it was happening), and so the lockdowns saved no lives, but cost some from a standpoint of higher lockdown-related deaths.

440 If you can't do the math - how exactly is the model supposed to give an accurate result ? By determining the bounds ? For anything other than simple, objective things like cards or dice - nobody can define those bounds with any degree of precision that can yield anything useful. Because, if they could, they'd know how to describe the bounds mathematically.

Posted by: Nome de Plume

As someone who has done large statistical analyses in the past and been published, the truth is that most datasets suck. The suckage varies by subject but they all suck in their own special way.

So to address the suckage, you use statistical tools to try to remediate data distribution flaws. A wise person triangulates and uses various means to try to illuminate the darkness a bit. They are also circumspect on findings. Ideally, one should know what your stat tool does, its limitations, etc. but most people conducting research are not mathematicians and most mathematicians that develop the tools are essentially uninterested in the other components of good research which produces the dataset in the first place. Thus, the blind leading the blind problem.

I think so. This is my guess. It was a new virus and it came from Wuhan where they have a bioweapons lab. I think a big reason for the gross over reation at the beginning was this combination in addition to China's incredible reaction to it. I think the Chinese response also put a lot of people back on their heels and it drove a serious over reaction.

But then they found that they *really* liked it...

560 s someone who has done large statistical analyses in the past and been published, the truth is that most datasets suck. The suckage varies by subject but they all suck in their own special way.

Because life sucks. Life is not easily quantifiable or categorized, even in the most multi-variable formula.

And the more resolution you get - down to the individual - the more random. Because we sometimes do shit just "because".

I hate this idea - and my wife does it in her line of work - of "fixing" the data set. Then fuck, just write down the numbers you wish you'd have measured, and go from there.

I think that was evidence of being wrong. The hospital ships and the field hospitals were part of that "kitchen sink" approach to covering all possible bases in the face of an unknown pathogen of unknown origin. I was glad to see it, actually, and I am glad that we can rally those kinds of resources if needed.

But it was very clear very quickly that it wasn't necessary because COVID was not as bad as feared. And then they kept all the bullshit going for the next two years anyway because they're evil assholes.

587 I think I am in the minority here, but I think a lot of the initial response was blind terror and "throw the kitchen sink at it" rather than an artificial op. By Easter of 2020, however, it was obvious that hospital exhaustion was not a risk and all of this shit should have ended. If there is a "start date" for this being a full-blown op run for nefarious purposes, that's it in my mind.

That certainly follows my personal thoughts on the pandemic. I was ready to get back to normal at Easter 2020. But I think you are right - once the fear was sprinkled out to the public it was time to exploit it. Predations abound.

Taking back government is a decade long proposition. Gaining the executive was a nice start, but until you take full control of the legislature and use it to uncorrupt the judiciary, setbacks like this will still happen regularly.

People need to understand the nature of this fight; it's going to be a long one.

Usual US pneumonia deaths in a year: 30,000 to 50,000. In 2020: less than 1,000.
But the real kicker is when Covid was listed as contributing to death of someone, that also had gunshots in the back of their head. (Chicago, NY, and others)

Because the people who moved to Canada from oppressive regimes know what communism is like and don't want to see their country turn into some version that.

When testing performance of a program with "random" number generators, you create a seed for the generator to make results different from run to run. When testing, you use the same seed to verify the program, then check with different seeds.
