My students were willing to discuss the appropriateness of the 16-18 range, but were resolutely opposed to going any lower. Early 20th century SF was written by tech nerds for tech nerds, mostly, and so sex wasn't part of the formula. Plus, due to public readership, usually magazines sold at stores or newsstands, they couldn't get too crazy, or the magazines would be impounded for the sake of the children. (For real, not as a political talking point.) The New Wave of Science Fiction that started in the Sixties and ran into the Eighties featured social engineering and societal evolution as themes. It being that time in our history, sex and drugs (if not rock & roll) got put into it. Some of it was good, some of it not so much, some of it got in the way of the effin' story. In the case of John Brunner, it sometimes was the story.

so, I think it's simple: They're writing speculative fiction. They're supposed to be saying "here is what the world will look like as society and humans evolve."
I think they think that if they just show people having conventional sex or being conventionally in love, that's like showing people just driving a car or just having a normal job -- they're not doing their jobs as speculative fiction writers. They're not probing/pushing/guessing about what could be.

They should, those things are a menace. They hurt the deer population in many ways. A Mtn lion kills a deer, eats a little bit, as soon as he leaves the pigs eat the rest and the lion has to kill another deer instead of eating it for several days. In some areas out east of Los Angeles there are literally millions of them as there are small hills dotted across the land which are too much trouble to level so they can be planted and they provide excellent cover for the rabbits and all they have to do to eat is come down off the hills and get what they want. This of course was many many years ago so maybe they've done something about it.
but I remember being amazed at seeing the hordes of rabbits coming down into the fields like the ground was alive. I'm surprised the farmer had any crop to take in afterwards.

Thing is, we saw this one coming over a week ago. There was no way in hell they'd let this stand. And no doubt they waited as long as they did to inflict as much damage as possible. And they'll probably have a "5-10 business days" return. They should have gone to GiveSendGo, of course hindsight being 20/20. Hopefully this will be a learning moment and these bastards get sued. I need to check to see if somebody set up a GiveSendGo and throw a few bucks their way.

Classical liberalism though didn't throw out the moralistic baby with the bath water. Its proponents knew that liberal thoughts and ideas had to have a common, easily identified connection to Natural Law in order to be accepted. It was the Marxists who became the supporters of detaching the moral basis of Law and Behavior in order to corrupt and corrode the existing systems, so that the One True Religion, errr, I mean Socio-Economic-Political Theory, could succeed and replace everything. But the Party would demand ultimate love for itself, or there would be punishment.

California is stupid but we can shoot hogs, I can shoot a fawn if it harms my crops. I think the only thing I can't shoot is a bird of prey. I'm not positive about mountain lions. I think I can still get a depredation permit for them, you just have to call fish and game and turn over the tag and the body.

The thing is, they've accomplished their goal. They've tied the funds up - these people need this money ASAP! Not in a month or two. Even if they return it - they've tied the funds up - they've made a FORTUNE on that $9M (that's how PP makes a mint) in the meantime. Then, how many of the people who got the refund will be gun shy? I'd bet a large percentage would have second thoughts after a scare like this.

Pretty sure they have service terms that require a return of funds to the donator in the case of a cause being pulled.
It will be interesting to see what they do as there are definite legal ramifications to their biz model.
They benefit through fees if they redirect the funds. So, there are definite legal issues going forward if they change the policies.

I volunteered with a group advocating for victims and against rape, sexual assault for several years. It was an eye-opener; I was naďve and didn't realize the scope of ages & sexes & life circumstances - for both victims (especially victims) and predators and, at times, enablers - involved. The SANE program nurses, trained police departments, educational programs, volunteers & more were wonderful, but cases never ceased and then began climbing as the county population increased.
Now, I'm thinking of the movie Time to Kill. I guess I'm not a realist but I believe in ass-kicking punishment - lasting and appropriately painful - for crimes committed against the weakest. There is no excuse for that vile professor; permanent removal from sane society now.

Note that (before he went so far off the deep end he decided consent wasn't even needed) he also divorced consent from understanding what is being consented to.
