Don't Worry: News About Teachers and Teachers Unions Will Now Be Rated for Accuracy and Reliability By... 1.7 Million Teachers, Using NewsGuard Memberships Purchased by the Teachers Unions

More bad news for Brandon in that NBC poll: Parents have had enough of teachers shutting down schools:

Amy Walter
@amyewalter

Lotta interesting data in the new NBC poll, most of it quite grim for Biden and Dems. This also jumped out: by a margin of 65% to 35%, parents more concerned about their child missing out on education than getting COVID at in-person school.

By the way, Bad News for Brandon was XTC's most underrated album. It had the singles, "Wot's Rupert Got Up to Now?" and "Fancy a Go" if you remember those.

Have the teachers been getting bad press lately? Are they demanding so much and making parents so angry that they might cause a widespread revolt and force the Democrats to start telling them "no"?

As Democrats worry more about their increasingly unpopular allies the teachers unions, teachers unions must be worrying about how to win back their position of unquestioned power.

For many parents and teachers, the pandemic has become a slog of anxiety over the risk of infection, child care crises, the tedium of school-through-a-screen and, most of all, chronic instability.

And for Democrats, the revival of tensions over remote schooling is a distinctly unwelcome development.

Because they have close ties to the unions, Democrats are concerned that additional closures like those in Chicago could lead to a possible replay of the party's recent loss in Virginia's governor race. Polling showed that school disruptions were an important issue for swing voters who broke Republican -- particularly suburban white women.

"It's a big deal in most state polling we do," said Brian Stryker, a partner at the polling firm ALG Research whose work in Virginia indicated that school closures hurt Democrats.

"Anyone who thinks this is a political problem that stops at the Chicago city line is kidding themselves," added Mr. Stryker, whose firm polled for President Biden's 2020 campaign. "This is going to resonate all across Illinois, across the country."
More than one million of the country's 50 million public school students were affected by districtwide shutdowns in the first week of January, many of which were announced abruptly and triggered a wave of frustration among parents.

"The kids are not the ones that are seriously ill by and large, but we know kids are the ones suffering from remote learning," said Dan Kirk, whose son attends Walter Payton College Preparatory High School in Chicago, which was closed amid the district's standoff this week.

So what are the teachers unions to do? Their political patrons might be forced to turn on them if they don't stop being so toxic and so openly hateful towards parents and especially towards the children.

So, one thing they could do is re-orient their priorities back to the kids they're supposedly All About.

LOL. Fat chance, right?

The other thing they could do is simply censor the news so there aren't as many politically harmful stories about what teachers and teachers unions are up to.

But how could teachers do that?

Don't worry, there's an app for that. Specifically, the teachers unions will just buy NewsGuard memberships for 1.7 million teachers, which will allow them to "fact-check" stories which they believe depict teachers in a bad light and get them censored and demonitized.

Problem solved! Teachers will continue doing what teachers have been doing, but now, people won't be allowed to publicly talk about it!

NewsGuard, the establishment "news-rating" project that presents itself as a source of expert knowledge on which news sources can be trusted and which ones cannot, will be rolling out to millions of American schoolchildren due to a partnership with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

Per Axios, the AFT will purchase NewsGuard licenses for all of its 1.7 million teachers, in a major deal for the news-rating project.

"The hope is that students with the skills to spot disinformation will grow into more thoughtful and better-informed citizens and voters," writes Axios.

NewsGuard has had a reputation as a project of the political establishment since its inception. Formerly prominent neoconservative Bill Kristol, who is seen as an archetypal establishment conservative, said of Newsguard in 2019: "I guess the counter-argument to what you're doing is, well, this is a bunch of establishment people deciding they like establishment websites."

NewsGuard maintains a list of news outlets it considers "trustworthy" and "untrustworthy," data which it uses in a browser extension that users can add on to various mainstream browsers, including Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

When the extension is installed, it displays red warning labels alongside links to websites NewsGuard considers untrustworthy, and green labels next to links to websites it considers trustworthy.

In 2019, NewsGuard partnered with Microsoft in a deal that made it a default extension on Edge Mobile browsers.

NewsGuard gives a "green" rating to websites like Rolling Stone, which has repeatedly published high-profile hoax stories. The magazine was responsible for one of the biggest media scandals in recent memory, when it published fraudulent rape claims against a fraternity at the University of Virginia in 2014.

So that's how this works:

NewsGuard, a a for-profit, money-making enterprise, which was essentially created to be patronized by large legacy establishment media and social media corporations by telling them that big establishment media outlets are reliable and all of their upstart competitors are unreliable and should be deplatformed and eliminated from competing, sells memberships to highly-politically-invested parties to rate stories and websites as reliable or not, which are then used by media and social media companies for purposes of "rating" their reliability.

NewsGuard makes money from the teachers unions by selling them tickets to censor their critics, and the teachers unions get to censor their critics.

Everyone wins.

Or, I mean: everyone who's part of the establishment wins. Everyone who counts wins.

The way it's supposed to work, right?

By the way: It's news to me that people pay to be able to essentially control what news is deemed by social media to be "reliable" or not.

That's a scam. NewsGuard is selling people the right to elevate some media (Rolling Stone, NBC, CNN) and denigrate others (Breitbart).

Now, in theory, we could all rush in and buy NewsGuard subscriptions... but they'd quickly set up some internal hurdles that would segregate our votes as "trollish" and ignore them.

Only leftwing voices can be heard. Period.

It's so Soviet. Straight-up Soviet, except that those at the top are making millions off it.

Wait a sec-- that's exactly how the Soviet Union worked too...

12 I guess they learned this from the No Child Left Behind issue.

There was a LOT of bad press over that, but it was all driven by teachers. Suddenly, testing was a bad idea because teachers would "teach to the test."

I was not a fan of NCLB, but not because of testing. It wasn't about testing, it was about publishing results so parents could see.

But the whole country hated it because all the "experts" hated it. The experts were teachers unions.

26 They are doing this because theoretically they can do this.

If you lose God, you lose your ceiling and you lose your focus. It's no longer about what you should be doing. It's about what you want, and what you think is worth a shot trying to do, because you think you can do it.

Tucker Carlson earlier this week mentioned that the Kapitol Kops are investigating people who "defame Congress". Because, in the proper situation they have somewhere near the power to do so, and they think it might be within their reach.

The Constitution is clear, they should not be doing this. But they have lost that focus, they have lost the tension between what they can and should be doing.

54 Not really a lot of people getting rich in the USSR. And the few at the top basically had power, access, and immunity, more than outright wealth of the sort you see in the oligarchs of Third World countries (or the current Russia).

Georgian party secretaries and higher-ups were pretty consistently corrupt, and had more opportunities (border republic, Black Sea/trade, etc). Most party chiefs executed for corruption, Georgia. Kind of consistent with their culture, which is pretty much Sicily-on-the-Black-Sea.

The Soviet Ruble was officially pegged at near the value of the American Dollar.
The Actual exchange rate was much lower. There were stores in Moscow that only took foreign currency, for foreigners only to shop in.
So naturally, some Soviet Moscovites would trade Rubles for Dollars (or Marks, or Lira, or Francs, etc) to shop in those stores.
I think the unofficial exchange rate was 16 Soviet Rubles to a US Dollar, from what I recall.

Russian Planes still regularly crash. They are almost as bad as Malaysian Airlines. What was the Russian President that tried to ban alcohol? Vodka is still the most popular Russian Food. In the Soviet 80's, Blue jeans were the accepted foreign exchange currency.

Used to have this argument with my long term live in Girlfriend... she taught middle school math (at the time, I was teaching Network Engineering College Accredited classes to adults).

One of the things teachers MUST do early, is indoctrinate kids into believing anything the teacher says. They do this by Punishing them with low grades, if they disagree with what the teacher teaches.

This leads to a mindset that the Teacher is ALWAYS right... in everything... even with non Students. They HAVE to protect that 'I'm always right' attitude by relying on, 'well, I'm a Teacher'... otherwise the system would collapse.

88 When I was there it was around 4 rubles/$1, vs. the official rate of $1.4 to 1 ruble.

There were hard-currency stores (Beriozka, or "little birch"), and there were nomenklatura stores. Never saw a regular Soviet in a Beriozka, but didn't spend much time in them either.

For certain things regular stores were a much better deal, since most of us had rubles obtained at the black market rate.

102 The Soviet Ruble was officially pegged at near the value of the American Dollar.

======

Beriozka shops. They loved hard Western currency, and would make change only in rubles and kopecs.

109 earlier thread, but I think every indication is that Roe v Wade will be effectively overturned this summer. I say "effectively" because they're going to say "oh we're not overturning it, we're just handing enforcement back to the States and taking the Fed Govm't out of it." I believe this because of the extraordinary lengths they have gone to keep the Texas abortion bill alive, when I thought they would rule against that one pretty quickly.

Now it may be that when they uphold the Mississippi law, they say that the Texas Law is a bridge too far. But at that point, Texas can quite easily rewrite its law to mimic the Mississippi law, which will do the same thing. (The two laws represented two very different approaches; only one has to work)

110 Regular Soviet vodka was harsh. At the time, Stolichnaya had just come out, but it was found only abroad, or in hard currency stores in the USSR. We stuck with the cheap Soviet stuff, and champagne ("semi-dry"), mostly.

At one point vodka was one of the major sources of state revenue in the USSR, to give one an idea of the economic health and rationality of the place.

The drinking was unbelievable. Walking home early in the AM from friends' places, one got used to people face-down on the sidewalk, in the gutter. Not uncommon.

One kid, out of NOWHERE came in (another 5 or 4th grader) on a potty break and went straight at my best friend at the time. His name was Mike, I still talk to him. and I LAUNCHED at this fuck, I remember his name too, but I'm not gonna say it; because internet, and all of the kindies ran up to attack him. It was both Hillarious and sad. Later I got a bunch of good marks, as did my friend Mike and John because we really did care about teaching the kindies.

I completely lost track of what I was about to say, but that was a GREAT moment in my life. 30 or so kindie's running in to protect someone 5 years older than them

333 Applying liscense to the the US Military is DISGUSTING!

THAT in and of itselfis an anti trust environment.

Having to confirm a liscense on a military system was an INSULT because I was ComSec, and I knew immediatly EVERYTHING was compromised, but my commanders didn't care.

FUCKING IDIOTS

337 Story.

I was raised Catholic, my wife, wasn't raised in faith at all, other than a LITTLE bit of eastern orthodox. Then She fell in love with someone (not me) and became LDS, got married, had sex, then the piece of shit she married committed suicide, fuck him. Then she turned to Jehova's witnesses, then she recognized that she LOVES "Cults."

She isn't insulting to any of those faiths, including my sorta faith, but she understnads how they recruit.

We were in Vegas, and we had no real plans other than going to 2 particular shows, and one of those promotional things, you know the timeshare presentations came up, and She could get one ticket for 2 and I could get 1 ticket for 2, so we went to the timeshare indoctrination.

It was so GREAT! because wife knows that she was in cults, or cultlike faiths. We are on the bus going to the indoc for the time share, and she is clapping and slapping and singing so sarcastically, "I LOVE the Cult Bus, it's so fun, Everyone sing!"

She did that the whole time, it was hillarious, she even did it during presentation, we ALMOST bought shit at the end, but I shut that down.

338 My final point is that whenever "spirit in the sky" plays my wife is just a fucking spiritualist dancer. It's HILLARIOUS!!! "This is the good cult song."
