Memorial Chess Thread

I'm not sure if the chess thread is going to survive in its current form, as I mentioned last week chess is not my forte. But I'm going to try and do this one old school, as Oregon Muse would have done.

59 Chess is one of those things that I always wanted to get good at but knew I didn't have the brain capacity to do well. If it were me it would have been the Go Fish and Dress Thread. I hope the thread keeps going in some form, either with a new game and the dresses, or as a beginner's chess thread since none (or at least very few) of us could live up to the skills of OM. RIP.

68 Now is not the time, but imagine OMs family seeing thread after thread after thread of people who had never met him in real life talking about how he'd affected them, or how they'd look forward to his insights, or how he'd teach them something, etc. Even (especially) lurkers who'd never posted before speaking up for the first time to mourn his passing and mention what he'd done for them.

Please collect a half dozen or so links so that his family can have some small glimpse into how influential, well regarded, and well loved he was. I doubt they have any idea.

70 I am really a life long novice at chess, but use to get OM's easy problems especially as was getting back into playing . Finally OM admonished me that I was above the easy problems so think that Saturday forward never at least posted a answer though maybe mentioned I got it. So always looked at harder but rarely got them.

85 Rarely if ever commented on this thread, but visited most often than others. The puzzles made for fine honing of my remedial chess skills, and the ladies of fashion provided just the right touch of class.

O Muse's commentary on the dresses, especially the vintage ones, gave me pause on a few occasions for their attention to small details. It made me wonder if he was a tailor, or at least worked in the industry, in an earlier life.

88 I liked the chess thread because it reminded me of when my dad taught me to play when I was very young, it was something I treasured. My parents divorced and dad left when I was in 4th grade, and I never played again. I'd come to the chess thread hoping to re-learn something or perhaps spark a happy memory. I don't post a lot, but I'm always here taking in all the knowledge and talents of the Horde. OM will be missed.

185 Back in the bl@zer/Empire of Jeff days and for a few years after, I used to post occasionally (usually socks). As much as I wanted to contribute more, due to work/life realities I simply didn't have the time to keep up with the Horde mind conversation and threads.

But I've always loved this place. Ace, the cobs, the morons and the 'ettes have always kept me informed, entertained, and relatively sane.

Chess, gardening, books, libraries, cooking, pets, ONT'ers, politics...whatever. I love being surrounded by people smarter than me.

You're a wonderful group of people and the outpouring of love for OM actually makes my empty heart-spaced chest cavity feel somewhat filled

(that's for AtC if she's still around).
