Mr. Of Spades, while we're getting all sentimental, thanks for all you've done to build this community. I've been a long time fan here but only recently become part of the commenting class. The quality of people here is unreal. All feel like extended family. OM's passing has left my mornings a bit emptier and my room a bit dustier, and I've never even spoken with the man, let alone met him. This is a tremendous place, at a time when it's absolutely needed. Thanks to you and all the COBs for giving us this space to play.

Those birds are Cedar Waxwings, or Cardinals Who Dare to be Different. We used to see them all the time in the Upper Peninsula, especially when our Mountain Ash trees were laden with berries.
I miss them here on the Delmarva Peninsula.

My brother bought my dad a bootleg Malaysian DVD copy of Star Trek Nemesis when he was terminal for Christmas. It didn't arrive in time, but it did make it for the funeral. It was the most cathartic and funniest experience with my siblings to watch it that night with the English subtitles on. To this day, I have no idea about if the movie is good, but that horrid version was perfect...
So, I'd show the set off for everyone now

We are at war, and losses are one price of war. I watched for a second time "Eye in the Sky" where a girl they tried to protect was lost in the drone attack on terrorists. The notable quote was "never tell a soldier he doesn't understand the price of war" ... or some such, regarding losing the girl over losing others from the terror attack.
We ARE at war ... losses like OM or Tami may not be directly related, or maybe they are. But we do have a duty to carry on with this higher calling. As I see it.

Wonderful story, Wolfus. A year or so ago on the weekend, I submitted Bobbie Gentry and Robby Benson for Who Dis -- and OM/GorillaPundit said he would replace his planned interviews with that for Monday much to my delight.
Damn, I've been so busy and procrastinating that for a month or two I was going to send him Barbara Hershey and David Carradine after seeing them together in an obscure connection: a two-part episode in the third and final season of the original Kung Fu TV series, which I rewatching now (my favorite show as a kid) and the wifey is enjoying for the first time. She being quite young and gorgeous of course, pretending to be not only half Chinese like his character, but initially pretending to be a young boy.

Oregon Muse came to our very first PNW MoMe.
We emailed back and forth, exchanged phone numbers and he and the lovely Mrs Muse decided to make the 6 hour road trip to meet us.
They pulled up in a green minivan, Mrs Muse driving.
I ran across the field to greet them and introduced myself and hugged them both. OM was beaming.
They joined us at the shelter with lawn chairs, steel tipped darts and Mrs Muse's homemade guacamole. And we laughed and talked and listened to each other. He and Mrs Muse held hands frequently, so ridiculously sweet.
A kinder, sweeter, smarter, funnier man you will not meet. As my PNW Morons will attest, he and his lovely wife were, well, I can't say they were the stars of the show, because they really weren't. It was all of us. He didn't dominate any conversation. He asked questions and listened and then, when he was asked, he talked. What a pleasure.

I think the first time I made the front page was a book review that OM posted. I was thrilled. And he recently said he was going to reread a book that I had gone on and on about. A friend I never met but will remember always.

...I'm already on the Linux side of that particular evolution. I haven't used Windows on my home computer in years, and on my laptop in an even longer period. It used to be that Linux was more complicated and asked too much of complicated users, but at some point in the near past they've fixed things up. I don't feel I need to wrestle with the computer or go to any sort of special length to use it nowadays with Linux. Windows, on the other hand, is an over-controlling bastard nowadays.

A weird thing is I took up Chess just a couple of weeks ago. I asked OM how to start a while back I think but I did not follow up on it. I was a card player and chess has always been foreign to me. When I took it up just recently I knew I would never be any good. My one idea was to participate in the chess thread by attempting an answer to the puzzle. I started to wonder why there was no thread last time.
I am going to keep it up to the level of at least being bad. I know now that whenever I play, OM will be in the back of my mind.

Dad wrote his own obit, and he did it to get all his awards, memberships and accomplishments in. He also stated the papers it was to go in, and fortunately he put money aside for printing because it was long.
Mark Twain wrote his own obituary, too. At one point there was a hoax to all the major papers that he had died, and he was appalled at what the obituaries for him were like. I think he swore it wouldn't happen again.

I did a google search for chemjeff, and the first page had him on "plenty of fish" date site complaining he was a fat old virgin who will never get it together. I saved it on a text file called "break glass" on the idea that he would do some kind of victory lap if and when Hillary won.
Well he did come back, and I did post it here. If you don't remember, it was the same day, the same hour Jim blew him up like a pro.

A friend of mine who was very close to my age died not long ago and I sat down and wrote my obituary so that my family wouldn't have to. I update it from time to time and resend the email to my wife and kids so they have it handy.
They get upset when I do it, but I almost died two years ago, so I don't see why planning ahead is a problem.

You sound like me in a way. I wouldn't do it at a MoMe but I have a few alter egos. One is a pig farmer and I work in the killin' room and move the bucket for the blood. My other story is I own a company that makes clamshells and my husband is my pilot. He pipes up with 8 hours bottle to throttle but he's not a good wingman.
I do this at parties where I don't know a soul.
My husband doesn't think I'm funny but I do. He just watches me.

I wanted mine to be witty and full of good humor, which is why I wrote it. Also, it spares my wife and kids the bother of doing it when they are (presumably) wracked by grief.

I got my butt to the CoMoMe last year, even though I had some anxiety about it. I am so glad I did! Great folks there.
I will attend again this year, as long as it takes place. I wish I could attend them all...
Considering the mood of these last few days (OM, etc.), why not step out and give it a go? Don't allow yourself the regrets. And there are always regrets in all places in life, but why not keep them to a minimum?

Could be your punctuation. "Smart" quotes make the hamsters barf blood. Hence the red text. I sometimes have to go through and replace every apostrophe and quotation mark to get something through.

Usually, it is a result of your device using characters that the blog software does not recognize, like curly (smart) quotes, curly apostrophes, em-dashes, and such like. If your device has a setting to turn off "smart punctuation", do that.
Also, too many carriage returns in a post will cause it to be blocked as spam.

Most common reason is having characters like quotation marks or apostrophes that are not basic ASCII characters. If your open and close quote marks are slanted differently, that would be it. If you are using an iOS device (iPhone or iPad) go to Settings-> General -> Keyboard -> Smart Punctuation and set it to off. Frequently if you copy and paste from the original post content it will have characters that you need to delete and replace with ones typed in.

What AOP said or are you selecting something and then pasting it in a comment box? That also can bring in fonts and other characters that are not accepted.
The way to clean a copied section of text is to copy it and then paste in a plain text text editor. NO formatting. After you've pasted that then select THAT text and paste it in the comment box. Sometimes even that won't work and the only thing to do is use the copied text as a guide to type it in using your keyboard and then erasing the formatted copy.
Actually I have to say that the blog is in better shape than it has been for a while. You can now paste short urls. I do miss the tool bar at the top of the comment section. there were a couple handy tools there that made formatting easier.

My daughter just called me to let me know that prayer does work, and after two days of very heavy bleeding, it stopped tonight.
She has PCOS and suffers from very heavy menstrual bleeding and clots on and off.
She made an appt with a doc, which is in the middle of Feb, and she called me earlier in the day in tears, frustrated due to not being able to be seen sooner.
After I prayed with her and asked for prayers among y'all, God answered.
So thank you.

Yes it is.
She's 33, and the prospects of her having children of her own are dim, especially since she's not about to have a kid without being married. The long-term boyfriend she had proved to be unfaithful, and with her PCOS, well, she's heartbroken. The health aspects of it just add to her pain, thus adding to mine.
She has such a huge heart and is so kind and loving...

They tried to make movies that would gain the largest audience and they focused on America..Today they make movies for China. The less dialogue you can have is best. I will suggest that to her, but with her job as a stylist, and her church and bible study, it will be somewhat difficult to fit that in, especially where she lives in CenTex (Killeen/Ft Hood AO).
The hospitals there are militant when it comes to being jabbed, which she isn't.

Good, other than unpacking the damn house which is taking forever. Epic move out of the old place, epic unpacking in the new place. Mrs B pulled a miracle and got the main parts of the house itself organized and decorated for christmas, well other than the family room which is still boxhenge, but is cleaning up quick as I build the shelve units in the basement. So other than playing this old house things are ok.

I had to get another house first. It took 9 months to move and get the place ready for the market. The place was pretty much done, but there were things that were in the works before I decided to move that just snowballed into bigger things. I had to move 3 business worth of tools, a shit ton of music gear, etc. All the while pay taxes on both houses, which is epic in jersey, and the new mortgage on the new house, and prayed my ass off it sold fast. I found out that hell has a basement.

Yeah, too much stuff. I had already purged some years ago, but its all the "support" for the things I do. The harley thing, yeah shit ton of tools, but there is machinery, and parts. The music thing, yeah a shit ton of gear, but then there is all the spare parts for the guitars, and amps, and guitar stands, straps, road cases, spare parts for the amps, and extra speakers, and tubes for the amps, etc. Then there is all the contractor tools, and the leftover plumbing and electrical supplies, and screws, and nails, and on and on and on. It was brutal.

I couldn't go smaller, not in a 1000 years. The reason why I did move is because my friend built the house I'm in now, I knew it good, he built it like a fortress, and he offered it to me for silly price I couldn't say no to. It was not worth doing an addition on the old house, even with me doing the work. It was cheaper to move here.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I always thought I'd disappointed him, and never got the chance to make amends to him after I came crawling back to Chicago with my tail between my legs.
He was one of the most interesting and compelling men I've ever known. I respected him, I admired him, and I kinda feared him. He wasn't exactly a father figure, but he definitely had an impact on my life that I regret sharing with him.
