Madonna And Child Enthroned
Giotto Comparing artworks is a good way to hone your skills at reading art (click on either image for a side-by-side view). It’s also fun. A good place to start is two works that have the same subject, such as the Madonna and Child enthroned. This was a VERY common subject in Western art for centuries, so there’s a lot of different interpretations around. These two works were created just decades apart, by a master and his student. Together, they demonstrate a shift in aesthetics from one generation to the next.
How did Cimabue and Giotto create similar works but two very different pieces?
COLOR: The palettes are similar: gold, red, and blue. In the Cimabue, gold is the dominant color. It is in the skin tones and even defines the creases and folds of Mary’s garments. Gold infuses everything and represents the holy majesty and the heavenly realm. The Giotto also uses gold, but he defuses its potency with that huge area of royal blue. He also adds other colors, mostly greens and white. The heat of Cimabue’s gold and red radiate. Giotto’s green, blue and white cool these colors down. To me, Giotto’s work is easier to look at. And the variation in color allow the eye to wander and pick out details.
COMPOSITION: Cimabue arranged his work in a very formal style. The main figure is Mary, no question. She sits dead center, facing the viewer. The angels are carefully arranged around the throne and stand on bleachers so each face and all eyes are seen. The angels pose stiffly. The four prophets under the throne occupy their narrow spaces and pose Gothically. In the Giotto, the figures are relaxed. Mixed together, the angels and prophets stand around the throne as a group. The figures overlap each other naturally. All eyes are on Mary, not the viewer. Giotto didn’t change how Mary is composed however. She is still dead center and huge, the entire focus of the work.
PROPORTION: The use of proportions here is quite simple. In both works, the main figure, Mary, is massive, while the others are smaller. In the Cimabue, Jesus is tiny, and because he has similar colors to His mother, He gets lost in her colossal form. Fortunately, her gesture helps the viewer see Him. Cimabue renders Him with the scale of an infant but the proportions of an adolescent. Giotto, however, gives Christ a more natural body for His apparent age and size. He is a chubby toddler here. He doesn’t get lost in the work and shares dominance with His mother.
PERSPECTIVE: This is the era before mathematical perspective was invented. Artists rendered three dimensional space in a way to get the idea across. Things get smaller as they recede, the viewer will get the hint. However, the figures within this setting look unnatural. They are placed in the space but don’t inhabit it. They’re just there. I think this idea is best seen in how the thrones are constructed. I think Giotto does a better job at depicting perspective, but they both look “off”. They demonstrate the influence of Byzantine/Gothic art styles that still dominated the era.
LIGHTING: In terms of lighting, Cimabue uses a straight on soft light to highlight faces and give his figures some definition. The highlights of Mary’s garment are just gold lines that symbolize the fold and creases of a garment. Shadows are black or darker shades of the main color with very little shading. Giotto is very different. His highlights and shadows blend gently and seamlessly. He uses lighting to drape Mary in rich blue and demonstrates where the cloth covers her knees and where the white top falls over her breasts. Christ’s form is also well-defined. The pink garment defines his baby fat. It bunches up and spread out where it’s supposed to. Same with the robes of the two angels in green to the sides. Giotto’s figures have mass.
Comparisons in art give the viewer an understanding of why some works or artists were trailblazers and innovators and why certain works or movements were important. These two paintings are an example of a change in thinking from older medieval ideas where art represents the abstract and eternal, to the ideals that evolved into the Renaissance. Both works are altarpieces, intended to guide the worshipper. Where Cimabue’s work is formal, stiff, lofty, straight-forward and flat, Giotto’s is warm and relaxed. Giotto’s work still communicates majesty, but he brings a tenderness and naturalism to the subject. Mary is real and three-dimensional.
Cimabue’s figures feel separated from us, on another plane. They look out at us and we look back at them like we’re watching a staged tableau. They are there and we are here. In the Giotto, the angels and prophets look at Mary, like us. The viewer feels a part of the group and joins them in veneration. The front angels kneel, like the viewer, before the throne but to the side so our view is unobstructed. We are included in the worship and it becomes personal and communal.

I love the juxtaposition of the two, thanks! My first thought on viewing them was that Cimabue's painting still appeared very Byzantine, in keeping with all of their stylistic conventions. Giotto, who was born in 1267 (it's easy to forget how far back he was) is the first western artist to begin to move past the old Byzantine styles. Not to mention that he's much more talented; Giotto's faces look like they belong to real people, not wooden dummies.
I have a Christmas Story book called "The Glorious Impossible", decorated by pictures of fresco work done by Giotto in the Scrovegni Chapel. They are magnificently beautiful.

These friezes, to me, are the same thing. The faces are all the same. There's not even an attempt to show individuality or render any kind of humanity. It's got the artistic value of a bread truck logo.

I'm Eastern Orthodox so I'm very used to this kind of look for holy figures (heavy gold, formal composition, "grown up" looking baby Jesus, etc.) from icons.
Giotto's definitely looks further away from/more modern than the Byzantine style, but for me the choices seem so odd -- the sheer clothing on the baby, the angels and prophets not looking out at the viewer.
I greatly prefer Cimabue's work to Giotto's.

It's interesting how different people's tastes are. That's one of the more fascinating things about art appreciation. Giotto's ideas here blew peoples' minds at the time. He is considered the Father of the Renaissance because of them.

Given artistic conventions of the time, I would guess that the two in the center are meant to be Paul and Peter (with the crown). The two on either side would have been prophets; if we could make out the script in front of them we might know which ones.

That was a wonderful summation of the varied aspects between the two paintings. Thank you. Applying your critique to the works makes me look at them even closer. Your observation about the Cimabue tableau vs Giotto's inclusiveness brings home the differences and improvement (to me) in technique.
It's a minor and niggling matter, but I find the way the angel's heads tilt in different ways, right and left, in the Cimabue to be distracting.

The gesture is the first two fingers raised, with the thumb touching the little finger. It's an ancient sign of Blessing which is still used by the Popes today. Although it's said to be a purely Christian gesture, I have seen ancient paintings that show it predates Christianity by at least several centuries, and was recognized in multiple cultures.
I find it fascinating that there are some hand gestures that appear to be almost universally recognized as Bad, while some are Good.

This is the High Gothic era. Look at sculptures on cathedrals for example. Cimabue is just translating that onto his painting. And both the Gothic and Cimabue was influenced by Byzantine motifs and styles. That cramped, flat look was the style at the time.

It's amazing how big some of these works can get. You really can't fathom it from a book or a computer screen. You really have to see them in person sometimes. The problem in the Bahamas is the cuda feed of fish that eat of the coral.
Barracuda is very susceptible to parasites and diseases. It can become infected with ichthyophonus hoferi, a parasitic flatworm that causes white spot disease in the barracuda, which eventually leads it to death. Another example of this is ciguatera poisoning from eating toxic organisms such as algae or dinoflagellates.
In people that ciguatera makes you muscles feel like they are on fire or beat on with sticks.

HA! One of the only good pieces of legislation passed during the Paul Ryan era. It was brilliant, and I predict will be impossible to undo. For one thing, only a small minority of States are hurt by it, those being NY and the other New England states which generally have a large, wealthy, white population who didn't mine high state taxes as long as the Feds subsidized it. Second, it's impossible to hide that doing away with it is a Tax Cut for the Rich. Republicans were *supposed* to be for that kind of thing, and now that they're not, it's impossible for the Dems to sell the idea to their base.

Recently that same church has started to decorate more. Still no figurative art, but they do have inscriptions on the walls now. Our baptismal was very pretty but was kept behind curtains until in use. They finally took the curtains down. Now it looks like a nice altarpiece with a huge cross made from wood from the Mount of Olives.

HA! *Now* they're talking about "revising" BBB, which Manchin had been telling them they needed to do for the last 9 months. (they ignored him) They suddenly realize that if they can get him on board, they might be able to pass something (which they should have done 9 months ago)
BUT - reports are that Manchin is so pissed off at the way they've treated him that he was refused to hold *any* talks at all with any of the other Senate Dems about what he would find "acceptable", not since early December. And as time passes, elections get close, and inflation news gets worse, the odds get increasingly more likely that *nothing* meaningful will be passed for the rest of this year.
Short version, except for the Jan 6 circus, this Congressional term is already finished.

The SALT deduction doesn't affect 95% of the population. It'd essentially be a tax cut for the rich which can be a good thing if the media decides to push it as such. Putting it back to where it was doesn't negatively affect the masses, so I can't imagine its return causing any kind of great emotional response that would sweep up moderate Democrats.
The thing is, if they're due to get swamped anyway, the SALT deduction change could probably get enough votes in both chambers of Congress and Biden's signature, giving the Democrats something for their financial base. Not even delivering on that has got to piss off no small number of big dollar donors.

As a wee tad, we went to St Thomas Aquinas in Dallas. Very nice, fancy, old style but not actually old. Great smelling from years of bee's wax candles being burnt, etc.
Anyway we moved to Corpus and they had some kind of ecumenical dealio where people from different churches were supposed to attend Sunday service and another religion's church.
I think the first one was the Baptists. And when I walked in I though something like, Oh, a warehouse. Where are the tires for sale?
Anywho, I wasn't favorably impressed.

That's one of the original Calvinist/Lutheran splits. Luther said that the Roman Catholic Church just needed reform, but didn't need to be completely redone. Calvin and Zwingli were true Iconoclasts of the old school, and said NO! It all has to go! Get rid of it all! For centuries, it's been a good shorthand way to tell which way a protestant denomination leans - towards Luther, or towards Calvin.

I have heard it put that while Roman Catholics pay for too much attention to Mary, Protestants pay far too little. (probably as an overreaction to what they see as too Catholic) Like all such disputes, I would say the proper attitude is somewhere in between those two extremes.
In many Protestant churches, Mary is someone who's mentioned a couple of times in the Nativity Story and that's it.

Catholics say they "venerate" the Virgin Mary, but venerate is the same as worship. They certainly don't worship her like God, but it is still worship.

Our priest was infamous for thirty-minute masses, if not shorter. My MIL didn't want a fast mass. During my wedding, he looked at my MIL and said, "Was it long enough?" I think the entire ceremony with Eucharist was maybe 35 minutes.

It goes way back to when stuff like the Nicean Consul was happening, and the decisions were being made about what was canon and what wasn't, and who was Christ actually.
There was a large contingent who thought that Christ was wholly divine, some who thought he was a man, and another large contingent who thought Christ was both God and Man.
In the end, the God and Man both contingent won out and to emphasize Christ Human nature, they placed an iemphasis on Mary, His human mother.

It's really strange that for 5 centuries, the issue of Mary has been the one that Catholics and Protestants have fought with each other about more than any other. There's something very visceral and emotional about her name, and her image. Personally I'd say that after 5 centuries of fighting about it, it's time to let it go.

Not RC, but veneration isn't the same as worship. Mary interceded at the Wedding at Cana - no one else had the relationship with Jesus to be able to do that - and I can see how folks would ask for her intercession in the present day. Mary was special, especially because of her willingness to do something that would have directly led to her disgrace and death without the divinely-inspired intercession of Joseph. That's worthy of veneration, I think.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of another biblical figure that risked all in the same way Mary did.

Let's do some math, and check some facts. SALT matters only if you itemize. So, if you take the standard deductions and move on, it really doesn't matter to you. The standard deduction per person, either married filing joint or singly, is $12,950.
The SALT cap, if you try to itemize your way past more than $12,950, is currently $10K. So who would benefit from raising that cap, beyond $13K, to the $80K currently proposed ? Anybody that pays a combined income and property tax more than $13K. And who would that be ?
Answer - your typical affluent New York suburbanite. The average income tax for any New York resident is $3400. Add another $2900 for property tax. And that's just the average. Your affluent New Yorker pays more. It's not that much of a stretch that he pays twice as much as average.
And that's what this is all about. The typical affluent New Yorker loves his state services, and loves deducting them off his Federal Tax. Trump raised his taxes, by blocking the deduction. SALT may not touch 95% of the country - but I guarantee it touches 95% of the media and political classes.

I think one of the problems is that the SALT deduction (and raising the SALT cap) ends up having a material impact on the scoring / modelling. Raising the cap probably gets modelled as a reduction in future tax hauls, which means that the Dems can't afford to spend as much on other priorities.
The Dems try to sell these bills as "revenue neutral" (even though they are massive spending bills). Raising the SALT cap makes it harder, even with all the gimmicks.

Accord to WSJ - about 13% of all tax filers itemize - so SALT is bigger than we think. You only itemize if you can get higher than the Standard Deduction.
As to why they don't take the easy win ? I'd say because the Democrats play their base about as well as the Republicans play theirs. No political advantage is ever gained by actually solving a problem.

That's very true. It's why they never make legislative moves against guns. They can fundraise off the idea of judges doing it all for years, just like Republicans can do the same thing on the issue of abortion.
But SALT is like tax cuts for Republicans. It's financial in nature and designed to help their richest donors. I just don't get how this is something to name check in fundraising emails to the masses without ever delivering.
Also, I doubt that all of that 13% even live in states that can take advantage of SALT all that much.

I wasn't prepared for a quiz, but I'll give it a shot. 95%, the original estimate of whom don't care about SALT - is probably more than the actual 87% that don't itemize and thus don't care about SALT.
Here's my point - it's not an insignificant number. Until I looked it up, I assumed the 95% estimate was in the ballpark, and it wasn't a bad off the cuff guess. We often wonder, why does the media class hate Trump with a cold fury ? I think part of it is SALT.
And look, if I were king for a day, I'd make the damn SALT deduction zero. What your state taxes you on is your problem - not a Federal problem.

We're not even arguing, just getting to the same point from different vectors. 13% is more people than I would have thought. And it's magnified by where it comes from, high cost of living locations that are overwhelmingly Liberal.
So the next time a Lib loves to talk about how the Blue States support the Red States, remind he or she of their precious SALT deduction. They like to think they pay the Lion's Share of Federal Taxes. They don't. They pay a ton into their State, and deduct it off their Federal.
Spice up the rhetoric. Talk about how they're cheating the country.

Except that in that painting Mary is pointing to the Christ child. She is making it clear that He is the real object of the painting, despite size and centrality. The second work Mary is not doing that, she is merely holding the child, even restraining Him.
