First-World Problems...

20220123_125407.jpg

Why yes...that used to be calcium chloride pellets. But over the summer (we had a relatively mild winter last year) it absorbed enough moisture that it turned into what looked like a solid mass...impenetrable to my ice scraper.

So what to do? Oh...I know! Add enough hot water so it goes into solution and then spray it on the driveway!

Genius! Only...it was just the top layer that had absorbed moisture and hardened, and if I had been more diligent I would have discovered that rather quickly. So the hot water sort of melted the top layer and I looked into the bucket and saw pristine pellets that were rapidly turning into...a solid mass.

And to make matters worse, the solution wasn't sufficiently concentrated to do much more than melt a little bit of the thinnest ice. Pretty much the worst possible outcome.

I am usually diligent in keeping the driveway clear of ice. It is shielded from the sun by the house and by a canopy of large trees, so once it gets icy it is a huge ordeal to make it walkable. I am that neighborhood lunatic who uses his snowblower at all hours. But I was otherwise engaged a few weeks ago and it just sort of got away from me.

Oh...does anyone want to buy about 10 pounds of solid calcium chloride? Asking for a friend...

I know at least some of you have set up a system where you store all your DVDs onto a single drive so you can go through them and watch at will. This house has over 600 DVDs and I'd like to store all that.

There is dvd rip software you can use that will retain chapters etc.

I bought a used desktop, Dell, with an i7 processor and a ton of ram, added two 2 terabyte drives, configured them as 1 volume, 3.5 terabytes space available, then started ripping moves using Handbrake. I'm using Plex to run my movie library, though I understand Jellyfin may be a better option. I ripped most of the movies at a very high definition rate, larger file, over 200 movies, only 456 GB of space used. Yeah, my system is overkill. I might add, make sure you back up your movies, because ripping a bunch of titles takes a long time.

101 Calcium chloride is about the worst possible de-icer, in terms of its corrosive effects on concrete, garden plants, and automobile bodies.

You can buy "organic" de-icer in the form of urea crystals. Not nearly so corrosive, and it actually works as a fertilizer.

Climate/soil pretty good for Italian reds, even the hot-weather Sicilian varietals, around here. One sees little plots of experimental vines planted all over in different places in east county.

Of course I go inside to get ice - to play hockey - and really miss sea-level x-c skiing in New England and Quebec, in great conditions. So I'm a winter fan, in a way.

Winter is the worst season by far.

It's only redeeming traits are Christmas, New Year's, and the Super Bowl - the cold weather, darkness, illness, ugliness (after the Xmas lights are gone) and general slog could all take a hike.

Although I'm not in the best mood - my 2 year old water heater has an error that seems to be motherboard related (per online when the reset button doesn't work) and they don't come out til Mondays...so deciding on a cold shower or no shower when it's 37 degrees...

It's entirely possible to melt, e.g., sodium chloride in a microwave. I've seen zeolites (molecular sieves, the stuff in little bags in many drying applications, in e.g., pharmaceutical preparations) melted into a solid mass by a microwave oven.

I tend to find a way to, umm, test my backups without actually, you know, scheduling a test. I was messing around with the desktop I had set up, and somehow destroyed the ability of my disk to boot. I'd made a backup image of a boot disk, popped it in, booted, started the restore, and was back in business in a couple of hours.

188 Pro Tip: If you haven't tested and verified your capability to restore, you aren't really backed-up.

I don't believe in image back up for most applications. Instead, segregate your drive into "Data", "Operating System" and "Applications". A lot of cruft gets into the OS and into the system over the months and years. In fact, twice a year, I rebuild my development machines from scratch. (often buying a new SSD and vaulting the old one)

For Data you care to keep, use Dropbox or some other background backup service.

For Operating System, always load Latest & Greatest from wherever you get your OS.

For Applications, ninite.com is your friend for a lot of the basics. It is always good to reload special purpose applications on an As Needed basis.

We don't normally get a lot of snow here, but I have propane torch I bought for burning weeds last summer planning on using it this winter as needed. So far, no snow accumulation to speak of. Last winter we got 22 inches, but I had no torch. I'm thinking snow depth has an inversely proportional relationship to preparedness.

213 I'm always surprised (OK, disgusted) at how few "professional IT" people understand this and just pile everything on one drive to "save money".

I'm the "IT Professional" for the entire family, extended family and friends of the extended family.

For windows systems, I have a short-path Dropbox directory that EVERYTHING I care about goes in.

OneDrive seems to want to protect the massively huge \Users\ directory which can and often holds gigabytes of your personal data tucked away into hidden "AppStorage" and other user specific data. Almost all of that can be blow away since it has captured a lot of junk over the years. Every single application that you have loaded and then unloaded hides things in the registry and in that Users\ space, and much of that stays there for the life of the OS installation. (which could be for years).

Again, ninite for the utilities and toys, load as needed for everything else. This minimizes my time and minimizes the ache and hassle of failed systems.

Fox executives really need to tell Paul Ryan and Fox Board crew that unless they hire a real polling outfit and not a bunch of handpicked ninnies their wine wives want, then Fox is going to have to hire Rachel Maddow to do their 6 PM Evening Report to an audience of all of 12 purple hair lefties.

329 Low flush toilets are a great way to increase water usage since you have to flush multiple times unless you paid for a decent quality pressurized system and still might have to multi flush since they don't have enough water in the bowl. They ought to ban them as a net negative to the environment (in the western states where water is in somewhat short supply)

In states that have plenty of water they should have just said nope to the EPA. Increased pressure on the sewer systems in Ohio because water is precious in California, Arizona, Colorado, et al. is stupid on steroids.

332 329 Low flush toilets are a great way to increase water usage since you have to flush multiple times unless you paid for a decent quality pressurized system and still might have to multi flush since they don't have enough water in the bowl.

So I walked her to the door and into the parking lot.

Her boyfriend dude wanted to fight and I never said a word.

They left and call popo.

When popo came no one would talk to them.

346 It's barely over 60 degrees here today.

But to make up for it CA will punish you in every conceivable way. I think anything over 1.6 GPF is illegal here now, with almost every damned toilet being 1.28. They don't even call those low flow! No, that's reserved for .6 gallons.

Do these fuckwads know how water works? My house has stupid fuck 2.8 from the olden days, and I still have to flush several times, and plunge too often. I was just looking at shower heads at amazon, and 90% say "cannot ship to your location - try different address". Fuck off. So instead of paying $30 for a nice shower head, I get to pay $80 for the exact same one with a piece of plastic I have to remove. I still use the same amount of water to take a shower, it just depends on whether it takes 3 minutes or 5 minutes. Assholes.

347 Convicted mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik spends his days in a spacious three-room cell, playing video games, exercising, watching TV and taking university-level courses in mathematics and business.

Halfway through a 21-year sentence and seeking early release, Breivik, 42, is being treated in a way that might seem shocking to people outside of Norway, where he killed eight in an Oslo bombing in 2011, and then stalked and gunned down 69 people, mostly teens, at a summer camp.

348 M4v is the container that is most problematic. Sometimes mkv. Some of those play well, some not. The mp4s tend to play without issue. IIRC, I chose the Handbrake PS3 preset format when I ripped a bunch. But I have not messed with it in about two years.
Posted by: flounder, wrecker, hoarder, saboteur, mourner at January 23, 2022 03:53 PM (SH2Zi)

Yeah I wouldn't mess around with m4v or even mkv. I think I would stick to mp4. But I will do some research. I have a DVD to rip.

350 What is your recommended rig? How did you copy the movies on to the drive? Does it retain chapter breaks, is there special software to use? How much storage space do you recommend?
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor -
Huge question...seriously. It deserves a thread of its own. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo

There are some NAS drives that are designed specifically for handling video media and specialized software/GUI. Even "toasters" to help speed the process. I'm only a tiny bit familiar - and no doubt a lot has changed since I last looked into it.

As far as music, I swore I'd never go digital until I did (vinyl is still vinyl though). There's streaming devices that you can just feed CD's to, it'll rip and catalog them. Cover artwork (more or less) etc. Although I have yet to get my entire vinyl and CD collection back from the ex, I've found 85% of my massive collection is available high resolution streaming. One of the things I like is it'll suggest other similar music, and of course assemble playlists automatically. And an amazing amount of obscure stuff. Roon is one of the most popular, I have Tidal. Be a good thread to pick brains!

354 Off the top of my head, it seems y' have three major options (depending) ... 1: Food enhancement - it's a firming agent due to its ability to absorb moisture. Or, you can convert soy curd into solid blocks of tofu. It also depresses the freezing level of liquids and semi-solids, which means you can make ice cream ... 2. Water hardening - it's a common additive to soft water, like in swimming pools, where water is being held in concrete. Calcium leaches into the concrete and prevents erosion ... 3. It has medicinal qualities too, 'cos it can lower blood pressure and also treat acid burns. Pick one or pick 'em all ... y' have ten pounds to work with.
