The Morning Report - 1/18/22

maumaumaomeow.jpg

Good morning, kids. Tuesday and with all the tyranny, crime, immiseration and threats from within and without our nearly non-existent borders ready to wipe us out, one item this morning just caused me to laugh for an instant, before collapsing into paroxysms of despair.

"I'm a [substitute teacher], and the most important thing we do is take roll, so the school gets paid" the teacher rants. "So, I'm looking at the seating chart as I'm going up and down the rows and marking who's here and who's not. I get to the third row and I hear this 'meow.' Uhhh, excuse me?"

The woman goes on to say that a little girl told her that the teacher needs to meow back because the boy identifies as a cat. The substitute jokingly asked if there was a litterbox in the classroom. The boy then stormed off, and the teacher barked at him.

She ends the video by stating that, when she went to the main office to check out for the day, she was told, "We no longer need your services if you can't identify with all the children in the classroom."

"I told the lady, I said, 'I didn't know cats were considered people. I thought they were pets."

Let me step off of the ledge for a second, take a breath and ponder. Am I being played? Is this complete bullshit/clickbait? Let us assume, for the sake of all of our sanity that it is. The fact that I had my initial reaction to it just underscores the fact that our society and culture have degenerated to such a degree that something I would have dismissed out of hand a few years ago is now within the realm of possibility. And not remotely either.

Two or three generations of children - and counting - year by year have been force fed higher and higher dosages of abject poison, until their brains and their souls were lost to us. Beyond the government, the courts and the bureaucracy, we find ourselves surrounded by far too many people who, as children, guzzled this Kool Aid brewed by fiends from Howard Zinn and Edward Said to Nikole Krylon Klown Hair and Ibram X. Krement. You'll find them behind a cash register, a Fryolator, the operating theater, an airliner cockpit and the C suite -- from Wall Street to Main Street (the bits that were not mostly peacefully looted and burned over the past 18 months) to even the pulpits of our houses of worship, and everywhere in between. Worse than useless pod people, they will denounce you as evil for not wearing a face diaper or getting shot up with Dr. Fauci's Gene-Altering Laudanum, to claiming that there are only two genders.

Meh, too many of these people evidently aren't even working at all.

They say you have to work hard to get ahead, but some are finding that you can work very little and still do pretty well.

On Reddit, the "antiwork" subreddit is now one of the social network's most active and engaged pages, after seeing explosive growth during the [Chinese] COVID-19 pandemic. It currently has more than 1.6 million users, up from 180,000 in October 2020. People post epic text and e-mail screenshots of quitting their jobs, but the real heroes are so-called "idlers" -- those who stay in jobs doing the absolute minimum to get by while still collecting a paycheck.

"Those who stay in jobs doing the absolute minimum to get by while still collecting a paycheck" are otherwise known as government employees, usually found at the DMV or Postal Service. If only they did the barest of bare minimums at say the IRS or EPA.

She noted that the general idea behind the anti-work movement "is to reduce the coercive element of labor as much as possible by subverting capitalism," and said that those active on the page are mainly far leftists who support Bernie Sanders and AOC, and, often also identify as socialists, communists and/or anarchists. . .

. . . Some fear anti-workers could have far-reaching consequences for the economy. The Financial Times recently reported that Goldman Sachs was fretting that the movement posed a "long-run risk" to labor force participation.

It comes at a time where a record number of workers are quitting, a phenomenon that's been dubbed the Great Resignation. In November, 4.5 million Americans voluntarily left their jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

So, what does the sub getting fired for refusing to meow back at a student have to do with this? Everything. The work ethic, that is, earning a living via hard work - whatever that work may be - is one of the pillars of of our nation and society. It is in many ways an essential component of freedom and independence. NB the reference to Sandersnista and Titty Caca and you'll see what I'm driving at. To them, self-reliance is like showing the cross to Dracula. Remember during the halcyon (by comparison) days of "recovery summer" when Malig-Nancy Pelosi crowed about how being unemployed liberated you from "job lock," so you can be free to pursue your dream to be a poet, painter, toe-dancer or whatever -- while being financed with free money from Uncle Sugar?

Of course, there is no free money. It is a Faustian quid pro quo. Eventually, when you're on the dole, you'll have to pay them back, especially when you waste so much time on your ass that you become unemployable. And then, they own you. Worse still is when corporatist cronies (for a multitude of reasons too extensive to go into right now) ship almost our entire manufacturing sector overseas leaving millions unemployed. Even more "worser-er" still is that as decades pass, skills like welding, carpentry, tool and die making, foundry work, etc. etc. are not taught because those with that priceless knowledge retire and die off and there is no job market to support those skills in the first place.

But work, money, a home and family, upward mobility and individual freedom are damned as evil by the acorns that fell from the poisoned tree of Bill Ayers and his acolytes. If we vest our hopes in just elections, or in a few people like Trump, DeSantis, MTG and a couple others, we've already lost. The rot is so pervasive, dark and deep and goes way beyond just government. There are positive signs out there such as the parents in Virginia, which I should think (and pray) is just the tip of the iceberg. That is where the battle is going to be won or lost. We are going to have to do everything we can to protect the hearts and minds of our children not yet poisoned by the Communists, and try as best we can to reach and win back the hearts and minds of those already in their clutches.

If we don't, you better learn to meow and put your heart into it.

hahaha

Yep, anyone who has worked in any government job requiring even the slightest bit of labor or decision making has worked with these people.

You can bring race into if you'd like, but one would hope it's mostly coincidental because of the racial preferences of governmental hiring practices. One has to assume if the government hired sh*tty low-rent unmotivated white people at the same level that you'd see exactly the same behavior. That's my hypothesis, at least.

And it's apparently a well known and time-honored practice that the best way to no longer be asked to do something is to f*ck it up badly the first time.

The good employees will cover it, too, along with their regular duties and the 70% of the slackers' other duties that they've got to take on (while they cross their fingers that the 30% of the remaining duties get done and don't bite them indirectly in the ass).

It makes me wonder if this brand of "anti-work" is just new window dressings on an older niche movement. There are other reasons to take the position these people do, but this is a pretty bad reason. It reminds me of folks I used to know when I was in college who worked low-end, minimum-wage jobs so they would keep their tax burdens negative so as to withdraw consent and support Bush 43's warfare state.

Perhaps it is to them. It will not be to everyone in such a position, regardless of whether they consider them parts of a "movement." Working minimally and getting by doesn't mean you're not being self-reliant. It might mean that, but it needn't. It could mean that you're fine with an efficiency apartment, a transit card, a cell phone and an X-Box. If that's your standard, you don't need much to be self-reliant in those conditions.

Which brings the second point that ties into this:
... work, money, a home and family, upward mobility and individual freedom are damned as evil ... The rot is so pervasive, dark and deep and goes way beyond just government

Family is the key to that. Family justifies the work and the money in a lot of cases. If you have no wife and no family, what need have you of more money and bigger or nicer place or more stuff? Why move upward if it improves your material lifestyle but gains you nothing in the realm of love, family or honor? Stuff is a poor motivation and only goes so far. Mating, family and - perhaps most importantly - the *honor* that comes with them is a much better incentive. That key, fundamental and indeed essential motivation is harder to come by. The dating and marriage scene is a hellscape and achievement there is extremely difficult for large numbers of people and particularly men. With that incentive being harder to come by, why work like generations past worked? Why bother? Just go home and play your X-Box and have a much easier life. If we want hard work and production back in our society, we *have* to fix family.

Two things on that. First, fuck that guy. Talk about being late and short - though by more than a day and a buck. Second, they need to get their messaging straight. The competing narratives are enough to give whiplash.

Utterly unsurprising. As the article itself points out, the Russians knew mold could flourish on space stations since they had to deal with it on Mir. But the space stations have people living in them, and people bring stuff along with them when they go places. The environment has to be compatible to people, which means it will be compatible with the things that hitch rides on people. The only thing that is perhaps surprising in this is not that fungi and bacteria and whatnot are on the ISS, but that there is such little variety.

Once I have my house paid off in a couple of years (hopefully next year, fingers crossed!), a huge financial burden is removed and I can do other things, I hope.

The joy of work doing some you care about and that is meaningful is nice and you'll be happier if you can achieve it, but I don't think it's essential. In my experience, people by and large work to live. You work because you need to, so you might as well find something you like if possible and that pays more than subsistence because you have things you need and people you need to take care of.

Take that "people you need to take care of" part away, and suddenly you need a whole helluva lot less. Unless you have that joy of work and a desire to move up for your own purposes, excluding that motivation is going to have consequences. It is all intertwined, but I think work is in a subordinate position. It's the means to the end, not the end itself.

The Fed has another weapon they can use - and I suspect they will use it - but they will probably try to do so slowly and quietly through intermediaries.

They have a ludicrously large balance sheet courtesy of all the backstops and QE put in since the financial crisis. They can sell it. The bought the assets on the balance sheet with printed money and they can sell them into the market and then destroy those dollars after the transaction to bring the money supply under control. This will have some dire consequences in its own right - namely that if they shut off the liquidity spigot a lot of asset classes will reprice and likely shrink in value. Making the move will be a big signal that shit's about to get noisy and unstable. But if they start very slowly draining their balance sheet, it will likely help.

139 One of the few silver linings of the last couple years is the exposing of what's going on in our public schools across the country. I firmly believe this is one of the roots or our problems as a country, we have been turning out generations of brainwashed kids who have been taught to hate their country and think the place is a racist hell hole.

Parents are finally starting to get involved at the grassroots level and that's the only way to fix the rot. The teacher's unions are nothing but an extension of the Democrat party and need to be destroyed and it starts with parents getting involved in their kids education.

The Fed has already signaled that they will do this. There are Fed governors that have stated that they should reduce the balance sheet before they start raising rates, and they are currently selling bonds to do just that. The problem is that they seem to be committing to at least three rate hikes this year. Not sure how they dump the bonds and raise rates at the same time, which is what looks like is going to happen.

++++
The local kill switch (alcohol based, if I am reading it correctly) may be very hard to bypass. The remote kill switch (the "back door") will not be. Most new cars have some kind of connectivity with the outside world. It sucks and it's dangerous and it's hugely invasive. Unlike the old OnStar systems from when it was new tech, it can't just be ripped out because they're now integral with vehicle management systems.

But they can be crippled. To have connectivity, you need a signal and an engine compartment or buried under the dashboard is a pretty lousy place to get a signal. You need an external antenna, and they all have cellular/GPS antennae. Disconnect it. With the antenna lead disconnected, it will not get a reliable signal (likely will get no signal at all) and any back door or remote connectivity becomes a non-consideration.

They can do it easily. Dumping the assets will likely push market rates higher. And they have signaled a move, but not which asset classes will be involved (or even what they own - the composition of the balance sheet is secret, although its approximate size is known) or how big it will be. The Fed has a problem because they're so huge that telegraphing a specific move can trigger a panic. Their balance sheet is also probably underwater (buy high and sell low doesn't work any better for them than it does for you) and they can't extract everything they've QE'd over time.

It's going to be interesting and likely - and unfortunately - exciting. We're in new territory.

I'd have to agree with this one. Volcker was able to raise rates, and keep them raised, because Reagan had the intestinal fortitude to take the heat for him. In addition, it was done early enough in his presidency for the economy to rebound in time for his reelect in '84. As a counter-inflation mechanism. Suppose you counterfeited a million dollars and those dollars were indistinguishable from the Real McCoy. Then you bought a house with those false dollars. You bought an asset with fake money and caused inflation. because that fake money is now circulating.

You realize you're going to get caught and need to undo that. So you sell the house into the market and then burn the money rather than spending it again. You've now subtracted (some of) the fake money you injected with the counterfeit and have moved the money supply down, which will help contain inflation because you now have fewer dollars chasing goods rather than more.

The government would rather have the inflation to make the debt more manageable, but people also have to eat and buy things and inflation has to be brought under control.

I doubt it. The Chinese don't want the reserve currency. Nobody wants the reserve currency. Being the reserve currency confers some benefits, but it's a huge pain in the ass and exposes the host country to rather significant global liability. This is a burden we carry.

I suspect the days of the USD's position as the reserve currency are numbered, but I strongly doubt that the Yuan will replace it. A synthetic derivative like the IMF's "Special Drawing Right" (SDR) - which is a derivative pseudo-currency backed by a basked of major currencies - will likely be used as a proxy instead. I have no idea what that will look like in practice.

The latter are probably the same kind of people that would be posting into Antiwork, except that they probably would show the same work ethic there.

The amusingly sad thing is, a lot of the commenters will clamor for the government to take over. Without realizing the same damn kind of people (power-trippers, lazy slugs) that work in private business would also be found in public service.

They won't like it and almost certainly don't want to do it, but they have to try to bring inflation under control and they have to try to do it without bankrupting the federal government by pushing up interest rates too high or too quickly. They won't be reducing asset value because they want to, reducing asset values is a risk they're willing to take (and will try to manage through careful selling activity) to try to bring down the money supply without precipitating a fiscal crisis in the federal government.

The only thing I'm remotely confident about saying is that there is probably nobody at the Fed or in the Treasury Department who is remotely happy about having to do anything in this regard, and they're probably all terrified of the risks they're having to face.

The lingering question for a long time now (since the financial crisis at the most-recent, though going back to the Tech Wreck or the LTCM bailout or the S&L bailout, depending on how far back you want to take it and how closely you were paying attention) has been, "you can kick the can down the road, but what happens when you run out of road?"

My daughter used to love all the "Buddies" movies, so she would flop around the house on all 4's acting out scenes from the movies. If it went on too long, we'd remind her she was a little girl and needed to clean her room or pick up her toys and do something else. That phase lasted a couple of months, then she moved on to other pretend things.

I think Irish Democracy is passive aggressive resistance to government. Ignoring the preponderance of laws that the Karens all find so necessary.

The central idea is that there are too few jails to lock everyone up and if everyone gives the finger to the government it takes the power away from them. Which they don't appreciate, as petty tyrants never do.

Vax resistance would be a perfect example if more people, or a higher percentage had resisted. Maybe it's (the vax resistance) is the opening shot in the larger war to come.

243 We're in new territory

Well no, we're not. This is very, very well trod ground. Just not in America. There will be no Tall Paul Volcker to "raise interest rates". People are simply unaware of how fooked they really are. The balance sheet is unimaginably large.

Even a slight uptick with interest rates means hundreds of billions goes to servicing interest payments on existing debt.

Keep in mind "the debt" doesn't matter to governments per se. Once they can't make interest payments - that matters. That is the crux of the matter. I doubt you'll ever see interest rates north of 2 percent under the existing arrangements.

Picture if you will, every single dollar the government takes in going to pay interest on the debt.

No money for anything else. No social security. No defense department. No welfare. Nothing.

Keep in mind they HAVE to make interest payments. If it comes to it, they will stiff you in favor of creditors. Bank on it. Even during the Civil War, the government made timely interest payments.

250 I doubt it.

Thanks -- I've seen that synthetic derivative option proposed as well (on ZeroHedge).

Right, which is why the Fed will raise interest but will try to not raise rates very much. They're going to try clean up the money supply by selling some of that unimaginably large balance sheet. That's the new part. We are in uncharted territory in terms of how much shit the Fed owns, and attempting to control money supply purely as a balance sheet exercise has never really been conceivable before. It probably still isn't, but they may be in a position to shrink the balance sheet to do the lion's share of the work while providing only small interest rates moves.

At least, I suspect they hope this is how it will go.

262 I think that's a large part of why we've gone downhill like we have since smartphones have taken over our lives. We've become a society driven by entertainment rather than hobbies. People used to watch TV, but now entertainment *is* the hobby of the vast majority of people (and, sadly, little kids).

I've had this same thought. I spent some time looking into Twitch - a live streaming platform - and there was a guy who played World of Warships while wearing a poop emoji on his head. He had 21K "followers". Assuming that number is fairly constant and that they are all using the lowest level of support, he's making ~$84,000 per month. To play a videogame for several hours.

Wouldn't defaulting on interest payments -- which would essentially destroy the creditworthiness of the U.S. feral gubmint/Treasury/Fed/whatever -- actually long-term be a good thing (after mucho short-term pain) because NOBODY WOULD EVER LEND TO and the U.S. government could never borrow again -- making us subsequently debt-free?

[Hit home hard because both parents were pitied and sometimes loathed alcoholics.]

Changed my life -- and I got a wife and a life.

One summer in college I worked with an electrician who owned his own company. One day he observes my compulsive detail-oriented nature and asks: "You know who I make the foreman on all of my jobs?" I say "No." He says: "The laziest person; he always figures out the quickest and cheapest way to get the job done." Lesson learned ...

I went there years ago when Clint was the mayor. I had a business trip and 4 of us hung around for the weekend and golfed on the peninsula. We went to Carmel for dinner and ate at this small, upscale Italian restaurant.

The waiter brought us the wine list and it was huge. It looked like a phone book in a mid-sized city. We thought it was a joke and he said "come with me.

He took us on a tour of the wine cellar which was about 10 times the size of the restaurant and was overflowing with all kinds of wines, some insanely expensive. He told us a couple brothers owned the place and they were avid wine fans and the restaurant was just an excuse to own the wine cellar.

If you are sick, you know you are; take your meds, eat, sleep, get better; you don't need a test. If you get really sick and I have to take you to the ER, they'll give you a test; so you don't need a test. Problem solved."

I suggest she order one and have it sent to the mayor or to the governor's mansion. If massive numbers of people did either one, it would be most entertaining.

As long as their is capitalism motivating people to get "excessively rich", then their huddled masses won't be satisfied, and USA will remain the superpower and leader (of the free world).

So the oligarchs/globalists are actively destroying USA, for decades, but now all at once.

Since you didn't mention lots of sketchy people coming and going from his place, if he was dealing (and it sure sounds like it) I'm guessing he was smart enough to meet his customers and not have them near his home. I knew a guy who dealt weed for a living for 35 years and died without ever getting busted one single time. Told me, the only occasions he would let someone come to his house "they stay at least an hour. No coming and going."

403 Months before President Joe Biden announced the U.S.'s complete withdrawal from Afghanistan last year, Washington's watchdog warned that the Afghan air force would collapse without critical American aid, training and maintenance. The report was declassified Tuesday.

The report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John Sopko, submitted to the Department of Defense in January 2021, underscores that American authorities had been alerted that Afghanistan's air force did not have the capabilities to survive after a U.S. withdrawal. In particular, the report points to U.S. failure to train Afghan support staff, leaving the air force unable to maintain its aircraft without American contractors.

U.S. air support to government forces was key in the 20-year-war against Taliban insurgents. Its removal - along with the inability of the Afghan air force to fill the void - was one factor that contributed to the Taliban's sweeping victory as the Americans withdrew.

Even the supply chain issues won't help what's happening. There is a lot of dislocation in the market and it's all happening concurrently. I don't believe consumption is going to be in a good place when the supply chain issues start to resolve. We are going to be into a cycle where the Fed is reducing rates and we're going to see pressure in the consumer market that will work it's way up into corporate profitability. I predict we will see an effort within the next few months to declare "victory"over COVID to try and clean this up (plus give Democrats some fake credibility going into the midterms). Right now I am shorting parts of the market as a result.

430 Working only enough to justify my paycheck and not putting in every bit of effort I could is "anti-work" and is how I oppose capitalisms and stuff?
Oh, okay. I never knew that.
I guess I was anti-capitalism when I started doing this in 1999.
I just thought the concept was: If I don't get paid more for doing extra; then I don't see a benefit from doing extra.
Who knew it was something else?

Pro-tip for "anti-work": It helps to be good/smart enough to be able to do a "weeks worth of work" in much less than a week so you don't get fired for this.
And you need a job where your work is relatively well outlined and specified.
If you're an idiot; don't expect this to go well.

But I if I did (for example) twice the work of my co-workers each week to get paid (at most) 5-10% more than them?
I'd be somewhat nonplussed at the prospect.
Is that wrong of me? Really?

Posted by: ertdfg at January 18, 2022 10:42 AM (I388C)

431 As much as we like to rant about anti-work people, it would do us all well to at least try to understand how we got to this point.

We've created a situation where it's acceptable to yell at and demean people on the job, where sociopathic, uncaring dickheads get promoted to oversee people, and where a person's worth is 100% determined by what they can produce. This is a expected push back against that.

Are you a boss? Do you listen to your people, value their input, recognize that they are humans with responsibilities outside of work, know that they are making enough to support themselves (because really how does it actually benefit you if they can't), etc? Or do you just not care about all that and are 100% beholden to your bottom line?

Because that type of thinking is actually against the bottom line in the long run. You burn people out, you run them off, and those things all cost money.

I've got several of my people on a trial run of 4 day work weeks (still 40 hours, so it's 4 tens) and those people are showing higher productivity, more satisfaction, better attitudes, etc. I also voluntarily gave everyone a 10% raise. Profits are up.
