The Friday Morning Rant: Repelling Liberal Colonizers From Blue States

There have been some good conversations here recently about the mass exodus of blue state residents to red states, and what that portends. TheJamesMadison posted an optimistic piece here earlier this week, noting that based on new voter registrations, the influx into Florida seems to be heavily comprised of conservative refugees from blue states. That’s good.

However, I saw my old hometown of Austin morph from a quirky, laid-back music town to an intolerant woke-ville when the Californians invaded. There is not a town in the bible-belt that is more religious than Austin. The only trouble is, Austin’s religion is The Sustainable Organic Church of The Carbon Apocalypse. Texas Governor Abbot’s aggressive recruitment of California tech companies may ultimately turn Texas blue.

Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) has noted that those who leave a blue state of their own accord tend to be conservative voters. Those who are relocated by their employer tend to bring their liberal voting habits with them. That explains why Texas is bringing in liberal voters while Florida is bringing in conservative voters.

So how do you repel liberal blue state colonizers who will do to red states what they already did to states such as Colorado and Oregon?

Inez Stepman recently posed that question.

Inez Stepman - 2.JPG

I jokingly suggested that organic food should be banned. No organic food? Then no liberal invaders.

I’m only half-joking that the cost of organic food is like a poll tax, in that it serves to keep minorities out of grocery stores favored by affluent whites. But since organic food is not going to be banned, how about going to the other extreme – place a stiff “luxury tax” on organic food. Maybe fewer New Yorkers would move to Nashville if they found themselves having to pay an extra $10 per package of organic arugula. Also, for all the criticism of sales taxes being regressive, my proposed organic foods tax would be nice and progressive.

In all seriousness, what are some other ideas to deter liberal blue staters from moving to red states? Mandatory carry? Blue laws / Sabbath Days? Electric Vehicle tax? Mask prohibitions? America-first curricula in schools?

We’ve got to protect our red-states from the invasion. What are some of your ideas?

For a long time, Arizona repelled liberals because we had Sheriff Joe Arpaio. And then we also passed some strict immigration laws that garnered about 70% of the vote that John Roberts shot down.

See also: lots of places. This is certainly true in CO. Get more than 20 miles from the Denver/Boulder metro area and you might as well be on a different planet. But that metro area has the population and controls state politics.

The divide, more largely, is urban vs. non-urban. Those states with urban major majorities, especially *one* urban area with the majority, will drag the rest of the state down.

93 Deny them a favorite apparatus they use to abuse neighbors: Ban HOAs.
Thankfully, I live in an HOA-free community.
During the shutdown, remote-working liberals relocate over the border to Loudoun Co. They spend a fair bit of time on FB complaining that the squirrelly mountain roads have potholes (why aren't the roads paved?!) and that the local teachers aren't paid enough (let's raise taxes!) and that they can hear patrons of the nearby gun range (isn't there a law?) and cooking up ideas that cost people money (they tried to enlist the community to pay a $500 a year upkeep fee for the local lake, though private property rings the lake, so no-go). They complain about how people's yards look, stray animals, snap pictures of license plates of drivers they don't like. They are a nuisance, for certain.

95 68 I like the idea of an EV tax - since they don't currently contribute to state funds through fuel taxes. "EV owners must pay their fair share" to adopt the abhorrent language of class warfare zealots.

Better yet, instead of a mileage tax, institute a tax that is ONLY on the EV charging systems both public and private. This will make existing off the shelf systems require retrofitting/updating to add a meter, and would impose all kinds of nanny state tyrannies on the people who proclaim to love nanny state tyrannies.

You could even call it a "green tax" since it can support getting rid of their cars at the end of the life cycle, b/c those batteries are toxic...$1K/year might be too low...maybe that should be $2-3K to keep libs out...

Of course, I'd probably eliminate all tolls (and personnel) since I'd have the offset income for the roads...I hate tolls, so this one would be personal...

During election years, the local authorities would slap down a smearing of fresh asphalt to run on road improvement. True in part, but in places that are still only half-woke, like Washington and Oregon, people can avoid a lot of the damage from wokism simply by moving out of the central city to a nearby suburb or rural area. You don't see a lot of Oregonians moving to Idaho. So, you're not seeing a lot of blue-state flight from those states.

In states that are one-party Wokistans, like California or Illinois, moving to a suburb isn't you need to leave the state, so then you get blue-state refugees.

Perhaps, but add enough islands and you can make an archipelago.

The rot extends further into the rural areas than you may think. And thus you get a county like Montrose County with a school district that fully supports an out and proud tranny (male => fake female) teacher as the sponsor of a militant group of bullies calling themselves the LGBT Club, with active recruitment by the teacher/sponsor. Normal kids who point out the blatant hypocrisy or speak out against this group get punished.

And a 100 question student survey disguised as a health survey that included intrusive personal questions about sexuality, parental gun ownership among other controversial topics, and oopsie, we distributed it to the students without parental notification, which we had promised to do.

Then skiing became a big development draw. The big money moved in. Property value soared, and along with it, the taxes. The local, born and raised folks could no longer afford to live there. It was similar to the Electoral College, except it prevailed at the county level. The idea was to prevent one or two large cities from overwhelming the politics of the rest of the state.

It was Reynolds v. Sims in 1964 that ruled states could not have an analogue to the US Senate where geographic representation exists.

Baker v. Carr dealt with state House races. In between, Gray v. Saunders applied one person, one vote, to primary elections and ruled Georgia's unique county unit system for choosing a governor unconstitutional.

Yeah, moving out of a blue enclave is not an either or proposition. It's not stay in Portland or move to Tallahassee. There are nearly infinite choices about where to go, and if you are a progressive who hates what Portland has become, hoping to find a place that Portland used to be, there are choices in Colorado that would probably fit that idea better.

Yes, for sure. The islands matter in aggregate, but CO would generally sane and locally insane absent the hyper-density (state population-wise) in the Front Range. Now, CO is generally insane from a policy standpoint. There is certainly rural madness, especially in schools and school policy (the dividends of the Long March) as is increasingly true everywhere. Schools as a general category are so hopeless and broken and deranged that it needs its own solutions (my preferred one is elimination).

No offense to TJM - I'm sure his column was good and well-researched - but the human wave assaults from the population centers on the coasts do not reinforce the red states. This simply does not happen.

The sad fact is that Leftism is popular among urbanites, and urban centers are huge concentrations of people, and the policies don't work, and they ruin those cities, and cause staggering numbers of people to flee them for greener pastures.

But because politics is a stand-in for religion for most people these days, they do not change. All of this creates a natural feedback loop where the huge population advantage of the Left overwhelms whatever vestiges of federalism that remain outside of their current geographical territory.

This can't be stopped or pretended away. It's one of the biggest reasons why I want to see the federal union dissolved as soon as possible, before this process is completed and makes it that much harder to create new national identities in non-Communist regions.

Not really. Just moving out of Seattle insulates you from a lot of woke stuff, in a way that moving out of Los Angeles doesn't, let alone moving to someplace like Douglas or Lewis counties.

Compared to California or Illinois, Washington is a vibrant two-party state.

I'll believe that Washington is a wokistan when Washington finally has a state income tax - it infuriates the woksters that Washington doesn't, but having a state income tax loses big every time it comes up for a vote.

Part of that is the smoldering civil war in the Democrat party between the rising left Millennials led by Obamaites and the geriatric leaders in Congress dating from the Clinton and earlier. The Left is frustrated that their will to power is being thwarted and the geriatrics are frustrated because the left will not recognize wokeism does not play well with ordinary voter concerns.

The Right has its own civil war between the GWB corporatist/statists and the populist coalition of outsiders trying to move the party beyond the economic concerns of big business and wealthy.

236 It was Reynolds v. Sims in 1964 that ruled states could not have an analogue to the US Senate where geographic representation exists.

I am baffled that this is remotely allowed in the constitution. The federal government has NO SAY over what states do internally for elections.

This is why those "I did that" Biden stickers are actually important.

I wish there was a way to get this done with shortages and slow deliveries. You can put a "I did that" sticker on an empty shelf in the store, but when your package takes 2 extra weeks to get to you, the delivery guy should slap one of those on the outside with the date circled.

237 It was Reynolds v.

Thanks! I knew it was more complicated than I described.

But the rot has been building a long time. "They" had a plan, and knew what had to be done, even if it would take a long time. Methodically and incrementally removing those societal pillars that hold up a functioning society in favor of a dysfunctional free for all of anarchy and discontent.

Mobocracy or mob rule. "The worse, the better". They aren't even trying to hide it anymore. There can't be any place to hide, no safe harbor, no where to run. This includes even the currency. The US dollar was at one time, "as good as gold".

This can't be stopped or pretended away. It's one of the biggest reasons why I want to see the federal union dissolved as soon as possible, before this process is completed and makes it that much harder to create new national identities in non-Communist regions.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 14, 2022 11:41 AM (hQ23g)

I agree with you on all of that - and you make a very good point that Politics has become a stand-in religion for a huge segment of the public, as traditional faith has faltered.

One thing that will be darkly amusing will be the prog's reaction when they realize, very soon, that their religion has failed them. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression - they'll all get stuck at one of those stages, and none of them will make it all the way through to being able to accept that their Religion was False.

Constitutional open or concealed carry; Ban abortion except in the case of rape - requires charges to be filed; Indexed tax on electric vehicles; one year to establish residency, same as college - with the exception of active duty military on orders; 100% school choice and vouchers for private schools; 10,000 fine for any business found to be knowingly hiring illegal aliens, 2nd offence of unknowingly hiring = you know what you're doing; your gender says what bathroom you use. period, same for sports, camps, etc; the pledge is said every morning in schools; open classroom policy, any parent at any time can audit a class; banning mask mandates by business or localities.

I'm sure there's others, but this is kind of an off th etop of my head list.

This is a great idea. Makes up for the foregone gasoline taxes that would otherwise be used for maintaining the roads (heh), and also offsets costs to the grid. But I'd make the tax around $2500.

Well, it's not so much "my gut" as what I've watched happen over and over and over again everywhere else. Maybe Florida is a different scenario. That's entirely possible, and I could definitely be wrong about what's happening there. But this is most decidedly not what's happening anywhere else.

316 The rule should be that if Facebook (or whatever tech oligarch) wants to move to Texas (or whatever red state), they must dedicate X% of their payroll to Texas residents for Y years or face a tax penalty.

The moral argument is obvious: Facebook must show that it's materially benefiting the state, either through taxes or pay, or moving Facebook to Texas doesn't serve the interests of the state. But more importantly, it incentivizes Facebook to hire and maintain local talent with more influence over the corporate culture. After all, it's easier to manage one person who makes 50K a year than 5 people who make 10K each. In turn, the local the guy making 50K is going to be more likely to rub elbows with upper management and say "About this woke shit..."

There are even corpse-twitches of common sense in wealthy coastal areas, like Orange County defying certain state idiocies on C19 (and .... amazingly, the outcomes there are the same or better as next-door batshit LA, a true mystery).

Mountain/rural counties defy Sacramento pretty regularly on a range of things, and the politix in those places is little different than in rural areas anywhere.

A change of sheriff can result in de facto shall-issue concealed carry policies.

Net/net it's a sickening disaster, but those red/blue county maps have lots of red for the state.

There was a time when I might agree. But this administration has exposed a lot about the Democrats agenda- and it's not good. There are always going to be people who play politics like it's a team sport. But there are a lot of people in the middle who just want to live their lives and watch their children grow up in a free and prosperous world. Democrats have removed any allusions that's what they want. It's clear they want control and power over all else. They don't care if you live, eat or die. They want to force you to conform. There are a lot of people re-thinking their full throated support for that type of policy because it becomes an eat me last dilemma. Eventually they come to something you do care about. We will see next year how far that realization has come.

384 I live in Texas, and we've seen a huge influx of Californians and New Yorkers. Many of them are coming for the tech jobs sprouting up around Austin, and those will be deep blue millennials and Gen Zers, but there also seem to be a large number of conservatives who have finally had enough and finally found an excuse (job, lack of family, etc.) to leave those deep blue hellholes.

Those fleeing conservatives may actually be *saving* the places they're fleeing to. CNN did an exit poll on the last Senate election (Ted Cruz vs. Beto O'Rourke) and found that a majority of native Texans voted for O'Rourke. It was people not native to Texas who swung the tide in Cruz's favor. He only won that election by 2.6 points. Granted, it was a CNN exit poll, so grain of salt, and "native Texans" doesn't include people who have lived here, say, their entire adult lives... but still, an interesting (and scary) data point.

Yep. Our local outdoor range had to close because too many houses built up around it. It was a safety issue. And it truly did become dangerous.

Meanwhile, the deer and mountain lion populations are exploding because they are now in the middle of suburbia and they can't be hunted.

But when the food supply becomes completely destroyed we will at least have fresh meat. Won't even have to shoot the deer. You could walk up to one in your yard and get him with a kitchen knife. Of course you'd have to fight off a mountain lion for the kill. That might be tricky.

The steal was allowed to happen by the GOPe. Whether they will again is another question. After VA, it seems like they are willing to fight to actually win elections again.

I mean...Dave was all about "this is how people will vote", and I think the general consensus is that he was right. It's just that the cheat happened to erase that (months of people stuffing ballots wasn't enough so they shut down counting in six states in the middle of the night to ballot box stuff some more).

That story about how Florida's Republican registration increased by a quarter of a million while Democratic registration fell by about 10,000 is feeding a lot of my optimism for the future. That optimism is at the state level where pissed off Republicans and independents, who saw their choice taken from them in favor of Joe Fucking Biden, can have greater impact on things like voter integrity. Fed GOP is only good for a tap on the breaks.

405 We're at a strange place in human history where a political and social movement -- a religion, of sorts -- is attempting to impose their ideology on a culture by economic pressure, propaganda, and entertainment.

Americans do not like, agree with, and did not vote for the whacky extremist crap being foisted on them. They didn't get a chance to: its not being done by policy and law, for the most part. Its being imposed by the establishment. For example 70+ percent of Americans are totally opposed to the tranny agenda, and 99% of the cultural forces and businesses are trying to force it on everyone.

At a certain point, either the vast majority of Americans knuckles under figuring this is how it is now because everyone but them thinks so... or the businesses crack because everyone tells them to go to hell.

This is the "get woke go broke" test. Is that true? Sometimes. Sometimes a business takes a pretty notable hit then starts to gradually get over it, because people forget what upset them and start going back to Target. Sometimes the business is barely affected by it. We'll see how this works out, and I think pretty soon.

It took a sudden "glitch" in Bergen County to keep Murphy's crooked control freak ass in the NJ gov's mansion, so there are Blue state residents who aren't all-in on the woke.

Even overwhelmingly blue states like CA, NY, and IL have at least 35 percent of their populations who vote Red. I think most of the migrations from Blue to Red will be conservatives or swing voters who can't take any more tax hikes in exchange for shitty roads, shitty schools, lazy unionized government workers, and especially crime busting through the roof.

Posted by: Friendly reminder at January 14, 2022 12:24 PM (jYQlA)

457 We (Upstate NY) don't have the general political climate NYC and Downstate are afflicted with, it's a different world uphere.

Consequently antifa , progressives haven't been able to establish a threat to our flyover country life. They can't gain enough traction. We be da po' people who can be ignored.

This could change, but it'd take a paradigm shift, I think.

Posted by: irongrampa at January 14, 2022 12:26 PM (KATBx)

458 Not that it would ever pass, but I have always advocated for a progressive tax rate. Conservatives and leave me alones pay max of 15%. Democrats/Progressives pay minimum of 70%. Computers will track how you actually vote and change your registration accordingly.

Posted by: Darth Randall at January 14, 2022 12:26 PM (xm4VG)

459 Do what they do. If you live in the city limits, a city limits income tax. NYC and Philly has them.

460 What works pretty well in our back corner of AZ is lots of open carry.

Posted by: anon at January 14, 2022 12:28 PM (QCdaU)

461 Yeah, just enforcing immigration law (court decision be damned, its ridiculous to say law enforcement cannot enforce law), building nuclear power plants, banning abortion as much as possible, banning tranny bathroom antics, banning institutionalized racism in the form of Critical Race Theory in schools, that kind of thing angers, freaks out, and terrifies the left.

They cannot help themselves, they work themselves into a frothing mania on social media when you do anything like this, making your state THE WORST PLACE IN THE WORLD that is MORE FASCIST THAN HITLER'S WET DREAMS and that keeps Chance and Sandy Beachinanda from moving there.

462 $5,000 non-refundable recycling fee for every electric vehicle brought into the state, but give residents a discount of 3% if they buy in the state.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at January 14, 2022 11:48 AM (Q9lwr)

No to the discount. We need to flat-out discourage the use of electric cars, since the grid cannot support them. Keep them as expensive toys for hot-rodders.

463 Just getting rid of the mountains of subsidies the left has stacked into state budgets for crap they like but cannot survive on its own would make a huge dent in their existence.

467 One thing that Texas still has going for it...the part-time legislature that only meets every other year for 140 days. (excluding special sessions).

This keeps the state reps/senators from thinking its a full time job. Unlike CA where Sacramento is a mini-DC swamp.

468 Visible symbols of conservative ideas. Put up an American or Don't Tread on Me flag in front of your house. Conservative candidate lawn signs in your yard early in the election cycle. Bumper stickers on cars that show cultural preferences- gun ownership, military service, religious affiliation. Even commercial preferences give people a sense of what the neighborhood is like- Cabela's, NASCAR. Lib blue staters see these things and have a negative emotional response and are less inclined to move in to your neighborhood.

470 Idaho stationed Highway Patrolmen at all points of entry into their state, not allowing any vehicles with out-of-state license plates into their state.

If Arizona and Nevada had done that to stop the exodus of commiecRATs from California, Oregon and Washington from entering, we wouldn't be communist today.

472 With all the LDS out here, we practically have a Sabbath day. Lots of businesses closed on Sunday. Incidentally, Sunday afternoon is a great time to shop since the Mormons are discouraged from doing anything other than going to church.

473 Oh, and a massive tax on rented properties whose owners are out of state. One of our big upcoming problems here in Idaho is rich Californians buying up homes to rent out, driving the prices up for us locals and generally making neighborhoods less desirable.

474 California put laws into place to fuck over Uber and other 'gig' jobs.

Not a lawyer, nor a politician (I still have morals), but there's got to be a way for the work transplant folks, particularly from big, left-edge enterprises such as Google, to be classified in a way that, if they're working in Texas for a Californian company, they'd be considered a gig worker. And bum-fucked left and right by the Californian laws related to such.

"Force Multipliers" and all that. Try to discover laws in the states they still work for, find out how to legally abuse them to make it worse for the Karen transplants, and make them hurt.

Maybe have a grandfather clause for a specific date/period of residency in Texas. Unless you REALLY want to starve the Beast.

Posted by: Another Anon at January 14, 2022 12:54 PM (bW28E)

475 Trust people. Laws should trust people with freedom, so that those who are afraid of freedom are afraid of moving to the state. Build communities who want to be left alone by the state and handle their own problems.

Ditto what others said on concealed carry. Expand to full, visible, open carry. Get rid of speed limits, too. Get rid of occupational licensing as much as possible.

Get rid of the jobs for the most left professions: keep taxes so simple that there is no need for businesses to hire tax lawyers, keep employment so simple that there is no need for businesses to have HR departments. Make school choice so common that teachers unions can't keep bad teachers on. Completely end the practice of taxpayer-funded lobbying.

Will we have yearly Political Purity Tests in our perfect Red Utopias? If you fail the test that year, are you evicted from your home, removed from your job, prevented from going to the store or the gym? We can call them Conservatism Passports.

487 How to stop the invasion:

State militia to set up checkpoints at all highways. Anyone from CA, OR, WA to be vetted for certain 'patterns of behavior.'

Minimum $1,000 annual license fee for any EV to offset the environmental damage caused by strip mining for the lithium to produce the batteries.

Mandatory open carry with annual certification for weapon or weapons of choice. Failure to certify will entail forced lockdown until certification is achieved.

Re-education camps for those who's education did not include Civics, American history, basic math, reading comprehension, English (basic spelling, basic grammar, and basic punctuation), and Economics.

You can shut down every Whole Foods and Starbucks and ruin the newcomers' quality of life.
