The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"To the engineer falls the work of creating from the dry bones of scientific fact the living body of industry. It is he whose intellect and direction bring to the world the comforts and necessities of daily need. Unlike the doctor, his is not the constant struggle to save the weak. Unlike the soldier, destruction is not his prime function. Unlike the lawyer, quarrels are not his daily bread. Engineering is the profession of creation and construction, of stimulation of human effort and accomplishment." Herbert Hoover

Quote II

But two weeks and some 650 days into “flattening the curve,” I’m done. I don’t care what cable news is blaring on about these days: In this house, Covid is over. Bari Weiss

It's good meat for the base. The MSM isn't going to carry it. And Chuck U Schumer cannot be shamed.

Passionate. Driven. Soaring. Eloquent. Those are the words people use for amazing speeches. Speeches that stir the soul and fire the mind. And they are not the words for Sen. Tom Cotton’s speech about the filibuster today.

The words you’d use for this? Genius. Incredible. Damning. And of course: Will be ignored by CNN and the rest of the media.

It consists entirely of Chuck Schumer’s past remarks about the filibuster. And it is, to choose one perfect word: DEVASTATING.

Of course it can.

Cannabis could treat and prevent emerging Covid-19 variants

Scientists have discovered a way to treat Covid-19 infections and the answer seems to be an unusual one — marijuana.

Researchers have found that cannabis contains compounds that can prevent infection from the Covid-19 virus by blocking its entry into cells.

A study by scientists found that two acids, commonly found in hemp varieties of cannabis, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) can bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

Don't the munchies add to obesity?

Perhaps the old phrase, "Throw a way the key" should make a come back.New Mexico Jail Forced Into Lockdown After Cyberattack Incapacitates Cameras, Doors

A cyberattack has left an Albuquerque area jail without access to its camera feeds, databases, or automated doors.

A suspected ransomware attack in New Mexico has incapacitated services for an entire county, including the local jail—which frighteningly lost access to its camera feeds, facility databases, and automated doors.

Bernalillo County, which is the most populous in the state and includes its largest city, Albuquerque, was thrown into chaos last week when the cyberattack hobbled services across the government. The attack, which took place on Jan. 5, forced the closure of county offices, threatened databases, and caused major problems for the processing of everything from local property deals to marriage licenses, all of which rely on the county’s network.

RIP Ronnie Spector.

Ronnie Spector, who sang some of the greatest songs of the '60s and was referred to as the original "bad girl of rock 'n' roll," has died. She was 78 and fought a short battle with cancer.

A statement released to Spector's social media pages and website reads: "Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan. Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude. Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her."

Is Canada ready for Moron Village? For $2.3 million we could find out.

Buy a ‘Swiss Village’ Near a Canadian Rockies Ski Town for $2.3 Million
In 2021, a piece of Canadian mountain history went up for sale — six pieces of it, to be exact. But the listing set off alarms among local historical preservationists.

Sick of the ski lodge? Now, you can buy the six Swiss chalet-style houses of the Edelweiss Village in the Canadian Rockies. The six homes housed a retinue of world-class Swiss alpinists who climbed and guided prolifically in the area in the early 1900s.

Hopefully Twitter is next.

ON TUESDAY, FEDERAL judge James E. Boasberg ruled that the Federal Trade Commission’s effort to break up Facebook could move forward. The case itself is far from decided. But by blessing the FTC’s theory that a monopoly can harm consumers even when its product is free, the judge has signaled that Facebook—and other tech platforms—are not invincible.

It’s a big turnaround from last summer. In June, Boasberg, a judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, granted Facebook’s motion to dismiss the case. (The company has since rebranded itself as Meta Platforms, but Facebook remains the named defendant.) The problem, he held, was that the FTC—which is seeking to reverse Facebook’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp—hadn’t provided any evidence that the company was a monopoly. But in that same ruling, Boasberg gave a clear blueprint for how to revive the case. All the government had to do was provide evidence that Facebook has a dominant share of the social networking market.

National health care, what can go wrong? 'Extraordinarily distressing': Cancer patients forced to wait months for treatment

Cancer patients are missing out on precious “survival time”, suffering from treatable pain, and experiencing mental anguish while waiting longer than recommended for radiation oncology treatment at all but one of New Zealand’s public hospitals, experts say.

In some cases, a person’s cancer had grown so much while they waited for treatment that they had to have surgery instead, radiation oncologist and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) fellow Dr Shaun Costello said.

I really don't think our armed forces needs Brandon Scott Price.

A Kentucky judge this month gave a man charged convicted of sexual assault a perplexing choice: join the military or go to jail.

Judge Thomas Wingate handed down a 12-month sentence suspended for two years to Brandon Scott Price for second-degree sexual assault, a Class A misdemeanor. If the 28-year-old were to enlist in the military in the next month, however, Wingate would apparently overturn any jail time, according to Frankfort, Kentucky’s State Journal newspaper.

“If you don’t enroll in 30 days, you can report to the Franklin County Regional Jail,” Wingate said. “You are under the gun, young man. You gotta do it.”

Terror fears: Data shows that DHS cannot account for nearly 50K migrants released into the U.S. interior

WASHINGTON, D.C.- According to a report from Breitbart News, data released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) show that more than 50,000 migrants released by the agency with instructions to report to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) once at their desired United States location, have failed to do so.

The Notice to Report (NTR) process was implemented to help the Border Patrol ease detention facility overcrowding in 2021.

Some kids got some nice Christmas presents. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Yesterday, I saw a headline that caught my eye, which said that basketball legend Shaquille O’Neill, in his effort to make sure kids get “good toys” for Christmas, said that he bought 1,000 Nintendo Switches and PS5s for local kids in Georgia.

Digging into it further, and listening to the exact quote on Gary Vee’s podcast, here’s what he said:

“I called you know, my friend from Nintendo Switch. Ordered about 1,000 Switches and 1,000 PS5s. I went to Walmart and got bikes. So you know yesterday, at this little elementary school in McDonough Georgia, kids were crying, kids were happy. And that’s what it’s all about.”

82 I have a car question, my wife wants me to buy a 2011 Ford Ranger that was clearly well cared for, but spent 10 years on the Oregon coast and is showing corrosion on the springs, frames and various other parts.

Should I buy another pickup instead?

This is where it will get interesting. Facehole could have this thrown out pretty easily, but they'd have to publicly state what is patently obvious but what so many people choose not to believe. Facebook "users" are not Facebook's customers. They are Facebook's product. Facebook's customers are advertising firms.

90 I drove thirteen hours over two days to get from the Bay Area to my new home in Arizona. The whole time, my parrot was in a cage on the passenger seat.

I was playing the radio, but my bird had eyes only for me. She stared at me the whole time, as if to confirm that this bizarre endless journey was all right, because I was with her.

The only exception was the two times that "Be My Little Baby" came on the radio. She stared at the radio for the whole song, making happy little peeping noises.

RIP Ronnie.

Imagine the mental stress on walking up on unknown people all day. Whole bunch of variables in that discussion. Price, how it will be used, where it will be driven, etc.

If it's cheap enough and you're just going to drive it into the ground on salty roads, sure, why not. But if you intend to keep it for any amount of time it might be worth reconsidering. Frame rust especially would be my clear line of "nope" unless they were almost giving it away, and even then I'd think twice about it because the metal can no longer act the way it's supposed to in a wreck.

146 Updated note to media: Many outlets have reported that liquid nitrogen will react with chemicals in swimming pools to generate a poisonous gas. This is almost certainly incorrect. Molecular nitrogen is relatively inert and should not react with anything present in the pool, like "chlorine" (mostly, NaOCl) or water. The danger of adding liquid nitrogen to the pool stems simply from the nitrogen's boiling and pushing away all of the oxygen around, leaving none for the swimmers to breathe.

150 I have a question about anyone who has been or currently employed by the gaping maw of Fedzilla, the Horde mind undoubtedly has someone with this skill set, or knows someone who does.

Hypothetically speaking, a former federal employee can compete for what is known as merit promotion. In other words, they can get their old job back or something similar. It is most definitely not guaranteed, but there are procedures in place for this, especially with veterans preference. It looks like a lot of moving parts to this. One, thre needs to be a vacancy, and it would help to have someone on the inside, maybe a union steward, or possibly some kind of (attorney?) somebody who has done this before.

199 I've been looking for one of those old wool, multi-stripped blankets for my reclyner. Holy Cow, are they expensive.

Hudson Bay "point" blanket. Yeah, they are good, and have always been a little spendy. Those are one of those things that for most people, would be ideally found for ten bucks at a yard sale. Wool Blankets are kind of trendy again, and have been for a while so that probably has put some pressure on prices. In a way, anything that has "real" value has seen a resurgence in demand, at least under the radar, for a while now.

Check out the prices (for example) on Anvils. You know, those heavy steel blacksmith articles. Old school good quality anvils are well over a thousand bucks on the open market. Beats stubbing yer toe over it in the garage if you have one, it's worth some coin to the right person.

208 So, on the path to normalcy point today.

Took 2nd daughter to the post office to mail out her paracord bracelet service project (shout out to Operation Gratitude).

Anyway, we brought tape and scissors, since the mail back label had to be cut out and attached to the priority box (and we didn't know how big the box was).

Later-middle aged Caucasian lady came up and actually asked me a question - were the tape and scissors USPS's? I said no, but she could borrow them, and after declining, asked for tape.

Later, she came up to me in line and asked for the scissors, too, b/c she got bubble wrap. Of course, I passed them over and when I was done, she handed them back to me from her place in line.

This would not have happened in 2020 or 2021...but in the midst of our 2022 outbreak (the biggest ever here), it did. Simple small thing, but something I think matters. People will be people, b/c we're programmed to be. But we do that best in person, not rocking keyboards and tech.

284 "Where does one even get liquid nitrogen?"

It depends on how much you want. If you only want a small amount - say, a pint or so - check with your local hospital. The pathology department keeps the stuff on hand to freeze specimens for quick analysis. Any other local lab that does cryogenic research might let you have some, or sell it to you. To transport it, you'll need an industrial-grade Dewar flask; otherwise, it'll boil away almost immediately.

BTW, liquid nitrogen makes terrific ice-cream: just pour a cup of the stuff into the batter, and stir with a wooden spoon. It freezes the batter almost instantly, forming the tiny crystals that make smooth ice-cream. Just be sure to do this in a well-ventilated room.

291 I'm amazed that we all let this "flatten the curve" thing go as long as we did. Those of us in red states should have been pushing back WAY harder than we did, and those in blue states should have tried pushing back at all.

Local government is the key here. PUSH THEM. I live in a red state and I've had to try hard to even convince friends that the $10 an hour crowd working local establishments needed to hear their objections. We're all too nice--"They just work here" is a common objection. Maybe they "just work here", but they're part of a nazi platform. Shame them to rebel or own their part in it.

I have a question about furniture, I have an old rocker that has an age crack that went all the way through the wood. I can use clamps to hold and set it, but I want a suggestion for the type of wood glue to use for the repair.

The piece is from the 1870's, is probably mahogany, at one point the cane bottom was replaced with a cross stitch. My wife loves it for sitting in, and the crack is in the front where there is a lot of pressure.

I doubt mahogany, but may be. Most all Victorian to Craftsman was oak. Regardless. I'd use interior Elmers. Some folks prefer Titebond. Regardless, good clamps are essential. If you can squeeze it, it'll bond. If not, then use sawdust of whatever the glue is, and fiil it.

I would be more worried about the noravirus. On the bright side the cruise ships have had hand sanitizer stations looong before covid hit. They don't let you in the dining areas until you hit that first. Yeah, anything can happen, but they "seem" to take this sanitation shit pretty serious. One cruise I was on had a dude playing the guitar singing some made up gay "washy washy" song right at the entrance of the dining room, while the other crew pointing to the sanitizers. They also have a row of some nice modern star trek looking sinks right there too, so you can wash up. Its not like boarding a 17th century pirate ship anymore.

I think Oscar was a regular on an early (radio) game show called Information Please, it was really good and I think it kind of set the stage for later shows like Jeopardy!, it was pretty tough and had some high brow questions. Bernstein was actually a guest on the show at least once, though he sounded like kind of a douchebag to me, interesting show though, replays available as streaming audio for free.

Back in the day, joining the army was a common option that judges would give to young men convicted of relatively minor offenses... joyriding, having weed, shoplifting, etc. (in fact, I recall two high school classmates who wound up in the army due to weed possession. Re the liquid nitrogen in the pool. Makes a cool fog effect. Where did this story come up again? Yes, it can kill people by displacing the O2 around the pool as the nitrogen boils. Indeed that happened once with some idiots for some publicity stunt.

It also became a fad in some upscale bars to put a little sprig of liquid nitrogen in some drinks, giving a fog effect. No problem if done correctly. Until some girl had her esophagus nearly destroyed by swallowing some of it.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 13, 2022 01:17 AM (Mzdiz)

561
If you're wondering how one could displace enough oxygen out of the air, the expansion ratio of liquid N2 to gaseous N2 is about 700:1. That is a gallon of liquid N2 will expand to 700 gallons of N2 gas.

That's how it can displace enough O2 in a pool sized area.

Back when I was going to Clempson Cow Collidge, and I think it was in my sophomore year, some of us idiots got to playing with liquid nitrogen. Some of the grad students had access to the stuff, and they tapped some off the dewar and we got to playing it with.

The fog in the water trick is one, not to mention dunking various things in it and freezing the hell out of 'em. Like the old hammer a nail with a frozen banana trick.

Well, one of those professors caught up and chewed us all out. He didn't mind us playing with it, just do it safely. He chewed out the grad students even more 'cause they should've known better.

593 Full disclosure: I am an older white male.

I've worked with engineering co-ops for 30 years. Sadly, they generally have really dropped in quality. It used to be a pretty good professional advocation but performance expectations in the US have fallen off significantly as a whole.

Sadly most of the big firms that hire hundreds of engineers are looking for ones that check all the fashionable boxes these days. Some of the recent (5 years) interviews I've had are seriously frightening. Small firms who don't have the money to indulge in such fantasies are still looking for good engineers.

My experience is that good engineers are the exception these days in the US. They are also very hard to find/hire because anyplace worth a shit takes very good care of them.

596 Funny thing about liquid nitrogen and fog. The fog is from condensed water vapor in air. If you see fog that means there is air present and it's usually safe. It takes very special conditions for enough air to be displaced by an inert gas to where it becomes dangerous, typically 20-25 percent. Of course this depends on what people consider to be dangerous and that varies depending on who is responsible for what.

In a 20X20X10 ft, non-ventilated enclosure. You need to vaporize around 30 liters of LN2 to get to this level. That is a lot. The big 200 hundred plus pound dewars you see rolled around typically hold 60 to 100 liters.
