The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“It was Grandmother Spider who taught us many things. She taught us about pottery and weaving. She taught us about fire and light and dark. She taught us that we are all connected on the web – each one of us having our place in the world.” Demi Lovato

It has more problems than alcoholism.

Quote II

“It's not possible to overdose on fentanyl by touching it. If it was absorbed well through the skin, people wouldn’t inject it and snort it in order to get high.” Dr. Andrew Stolbach, an emergency physician and medical toxicologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital

Quote III

Learned stupidity explains how and why highly intelligent people, faced with a choice, repeatedly choose a stupid, if not the most stupid, option, time after time. Theodore Dalrymple

Quote IV

‘We thought it was interesting, we got out of our shanty, looked and… a couple of people were yelling that the ice was separating. Didn’t catch any fish, ran out of propane early and got stranded on the ice.’ Shane Nelson, who was making his first ice fishing excursion

And no, I wasn't out there.

Quote V

"It's just bad science to suggest that dosing monkeys with feminizing medication makes them good stand-ins for humans," Roe told the Washington Free Beacon. "This study will not help to prevent or treat HIV and will not help transgender women." Dr. Katherine Roe, a neuroscientist with PETA

I'm attempting to follow the science. Yet, I'm so confused..........AZ hospital system allowing Covid-positive health care workers to work amid ‘critical staff crisis’

An Arizona hospital system just informed COVID positive staff that they can return to work because facilities are experiencing a “critical staff crisis.”

In a stunning addition to a BPR story this week regarding California healthcare workers being told that they can go to work if they are COVID-positive but asymptomatic, Dignity Health facilities in Maricopa County, Arizona, told St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix to allow COVID-19 positive health care personnel who do not have symptoms or are even “improving with mild symptoms to work without a quarantine period,” in a statement according to ABC15.

If you can't beat them at polls. If you can't beat them in the arena of ideas. Go court shopping.

A group of 11 North Carolina voters filed a legal challenge to disqualify Rep. Madison Cawthorn from running for a second term, arguing his involvement in a rally preceding the Jan. 6, 2021, riot on Capitol Hill constitutionally bars him from waging another campaign.

Lawyers for the 11 voters filed the suit to the State Board of Elections, contending that Cawthorn’s comments in the speech shortly preceding the insurrection violate the 14th Amendment, which states in part that no person “who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress ... to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.”

Do you remember the name Dominick Black from the Kyle Rittenhouse trial? Assistant DA Thomas Stinkfinger is offering a plea bargain deal to Mr. Black.

Dominick Black, who purchased the AR-15 rifle carried and used by Kyle Rittenhouse during the protests in Kenosha last August, could walk out of court a free man later today without any criminal charges hanging over his head. Black has been facing felony charges of illegally buying the gun for the teen, but the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Black, who was 18-years old at the time of the purchase, has been offered a deal allowing him to plead no contest to just one charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor; an offense that is punishable by a citation and fine rather than a lifetime felony conviction.

Thinking about Starlink Satellite Internet dish? You may have problems of the furry kind.

SpaceX’s Starlink has been making steady gains with its fledgling satellite internet service, surpassing 100,000 terminals shipped in 2021 and showing promising improvements in performance after initial speed tests produced lackluster results. However, the company’s run into an unforeseen hiccup with its dishes: Cats love them.

“Starlink works great until the cats find out that the dish gives off a little heat on cold days,” tweeted Starlink user Aaron Taylor.

Stunning? Good grief Mitch, you really think we are a bunch of rubes don't you?

Mitch McConnell must be trying to save his career with this recent statement

McConnell stated that it’s “stunning to see some Washington Democrats try to exploit this anniversary to advance partisan policy goals that long predated this event.”

Dana Finley Morrison may want to change her name to Karen Woke Morrison.

Dana is an ‘elite status’ member with an AA credit card

American Airlines was mocked by the internet after responding to Twitter user Dana Finley Morrison Saturday who complained about a pilot because he had a “Let’s Go Brandon” sticker on his luggage.

The Democrat who has since made her Twitter account private took a picture of the sticker and sent it to the airline, asking if they accept “cowardly rhetoric on their crew luggage when they’re in uniform.”

Suck it up Buttercup, not everyone sees the world you do.

If you are a reptilian Washington DC swamp creature, one thing is true. The ends justifies the means of the swamp's desires.

Have you ever wondered what disgraced former deputy FBI directors do after trying to stage a coup and lying under oath? Apparently, they give talks about “protecting democracy” at top-rated institutions of higher learning. Indeed, this last Thursday the University of Chicago invited former deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe to join a panel of partisans to discuss the Jan 6 “insurrection.”

McCabe was fired as the deputy FBI director for leaking sensitive information about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation and then lying about it under oath. He also took part in spying on the Donald Trump campaign through a secret warrant granted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court.

This walking, talking, breathing Piece of Scum should be in a federal prison serving time.

And after I saw the story on McCabe I came across this piece by Victor Davis Hanson.

What Makes Riots, Conspiracies, Cabals, and Insurrections ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’?
Shut up and keep quiet; that is all ye need to know.

All Ye Need to Know
The point of these hypotheticals is that there is no point, no consistent theme, no constant principle concerning riots, conspiracies, cabals, and insurrections—except one.

There is only the left-wing desire through any means necessary to obtain, increase, and use power to alter the Constitution and our long-held traditions and customs of governance, especially when the majority in a constitutional republic opposes such efforts. The lesson then is that all means are justified to obtain morally superior ends—with the caveat that only leftists can be morally superior.

I've never been a big fan of seniority. It brings many problems to the forefront. Some of those problems include but are not limited to lack of enthusiasm, lack of creativity, keeping the status quo. Is Rep. Kevin McCarthy up to being Speaker of The House? He says he is. I have my doubts. Serious doubts.

Several excuses and none of them believable. Genius Award Winner - Runner Up.

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ)– A Clarence man faces charges after he allegedly shot two trophy bull elk out of season but claims he mistook them as doe.

Applying for a job? Good. Stealing from a store? Bad. Stealing from a store that you applied for a job at? Genius Award Winner.

ANUARY 6--When planning to rob sex toys from an adult store, it is best to avoid establishments at which you recently applied for a job.

A 29-year-old man is behind bars on multiple criminal charges after allegedly stealing $350 worth of items from a Pennsylvania business and threatening to stab a clerk who sought to stop him.

According to a criminal complaint, Jacob McFarland last week entered the Adult World emporium in North Wales, a Philadelphia suburb, and walked out with a pair of masturbators, a $95.99 Fleshlight model and the Autoblow A.I. (which retails for about $250).

When an Adult World worker confronted McFarland in the store’s parking lot, the accused masturbator thief allegedly threatened to stab the man.

Never to walk again. Not so Doc. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

'Doctors Are Not God—Our Daughter Is Proof’: Paralyzed Girl Learns to Walk Again

It was the longest, darkest night for Margaret Bentos-Pereira. Waiting in hospital as doctors did tests trying to work out what was wrong with her daughter felt agonizing. Little did she know, during those endless hours, of the astounding journey ahead destined to test their faith and resilience.

Natalie was just 11 years old when her carefree, sunny life in South Carolina was interrupted by a medical emergency. Waking in mid-January 2017 with pain between her shoulders, she skipped off to school as usual, imagining she’d slept awkwardly, and the discomfort would go. She was wrong.

124 I like Dalrymple's theory and article, and he is definitely a genius but I would posit that he is assigning "intelligence" where there is little. Or defining it to mean "somewhat above average".

Our political class is full of many things - intelligence is not one of them. Social climbers, backstabbers, ne'er do wells, brothers, sisters, cousins, maybe - but intelligent people tend to end up elsewhere doing intelligent things.

Just listen to them when they are off the cuff sometime. Educated, possibly. Intelligent, rarely.

127 Powerline reports on an article from the Chronicle of Higher Education, giving the sad news that university diversity bureaucrats are suffering from burnout.

Why? Well, first, just about everybody on campus hates them; and, second, when the bureaucrats tell professors how to change their syllabus to "decolonize the curriculum", the professors tell them to buzz off.

Searching the internet, I found a corporate burned-out diversity bureaucrat, who suffers because people don't think she is Latinx (she looks completely white), and people treat her badly. She wrote one paragraph on her oppression, which deserves to be quoted in full:

One older colleague belittled me in front of a workshop after announcing her commitment to supporting junior women. A mentor ended our long relationship after a conflict stemming from me wanting more equity and integrity with him. Two beloved bosses turned on me. I was publicly escorted off one employer's property after quitting, due to a misunderstanding that triggered the leadership. I was scolded in a room full of corporate leaders for an innocent question, ignorant of their backstory.

208 77 "This study will not help to prevent or treat HIV and will not help transgender women." Dr. Katherine Roe, a neuroscientist with PETA

This is how most grants are worked out: they have an administrator and often a panel who have to agree on what to fund. But that gives these people power, and they use it. Often they will work with preferred grantees to figure out a way to create a proposal the checks the required boxes to get the funding.

This sounds like a monkey lab was looking for funding - maybe what they had been working on had dried up - so they spoke to an administrator and the come back was to find a way to research HIV and Transgenders - they had some money there,....

The point is that it is all a scam. It is free money that these worthless people waste and their only product are papers which are mostly crap. Grant funded research is a scam, and when it affects public health or economy, it is a crime.

250 I didn't say anyone else shouldn't eat octopuses. I just said I personally wouldn't. I wouldn't eat corvids either for the same reason (unless, of course, I was starving). You guys do whatever you want.

One of my fave octopus stories is about an aquarium where fish kept disappearing from one of the tanks. Eventually, the aquarium set up cameras, and they discovered that one of the octopuses had found out how to unlock its tank and sneak over to the fish tank for a little extra dinner. It was timing its activities so it didn't get caught by the aquarium guard on his rounds.

They would do lauter after lauter off a single grain bill. The first was the heavy beer and barleywines for the mucketymucks, then the stuff we would recognize as a regular beer, then several sparges later the small beer and near beer that had super light OG but still enough stuff in there to ferment and keep the boiled water from going bad.

Sure, everybody was drinking beer, even little children, but most of it was <1% alcohol. Clean water and carbs for all. Miraculous stuff.

465 Theramin is one of those "rabbit hole" subjects. The inventor is an interesting cat, he also invented a clever device given by the Soviets to the Americans, a "great seal of the united states" wall hanging for the Moscow embassy. Inside was a really amazing listening bug they got valuable intel on for years.

RCA made Theramins for a while in the 1930s, they were expensive, and not very many were made. These are very collectable now and go for a nice piece of change. It's worth knowing what they look like if you go antiquing. Sometimes stuff shows up in the weirdest places. "Oh that old thing. $5 and it's yours. Get it outta here."

The Library section has some amazing accounts on the Fur trapping days.

One group got up in the mountains with their horses, and snowed in. Horses do really well on Cottonwood tree bark and branches, but only "sweet" cottonwood, not the high country type. They didn't know that, and the horses wouldn't eat it. They watched all their horses starve. These guys got around in those days. Half the group took a vote and decided to walk to Taos, NM from Wyoming, I think it was, with their furs to buy more horses. They would ride out to California, cross deserts, go trapping up in Montana, back to St Louis, etc. Really hard core SOBs

491 Years ago, I wrote an open letter to Mitch McConnell in the style of the 18th century pseudonymous writer Junius, an author of politically-themed epistles which were published in The Public Advertiser. I am appalled that my letter, which I wrote seven years ago, is still relevant. Herewith, a fragment:

The Democratic Party, aided and abetted by its Mamluks in the press, has managed to construct a mighty political and cultural fortress even under what passes for leadership by the most feckless and ignorant president of modern times. From this fortress has issued a constant series of sorties by regulators, auditors and policemen against the liberties and even the persons of the American people. With mounting desperation, we of the constitutionalist party have scanned the skyline and the folds of the hills, eagerly awaiting the debouchment of our presumptive army of legislative liberators, and to what are we treated, sir? To the spectacle of you and your bumbling band of wizened, short-winded establishmentarians, occasionally shambling out from amongst the trees to unleash a useless volley of mixed projectiles from your rusty old musketoons at the formidable walls of tyranny...

522 More progress on the Jeep. Got the skid plate back under the fuel tank. Took the seats, center console, and carpet out. The carpet was disgusting; went right into the wheelie bin. Floor under under carpet stained by coffee, and I think coolant from leaky heater core. Mopped floor with string mop, hosed off grunge, and wet vacced it. More or less clean, now. Bolted driver's seat back in. Started engine, and now it idles properly, and the noisy lifter has become quiet. Droveit forward an back a little, heard a clunk, and discovered the front U-joint of the front drive shaft is not bolted to the yoke of the front differential. Will fix that in the morning. And steering pump is dry of fluid.

Got about five dollars worth of change from under the seats and carpet, and from under the center console.

546 Evening.

RE: Madison Cawthorn and the 14th Amendment. Now, I know I'm wrong on this only in a very technical sense.* But am I wrong in stating that that part of the 14th was originally intended solely to deal with former Confederates after the Civil War? Why, for Fucks Sake, is our side not fucking arguing that that section of the 14th is functionally a dead motherfucking letter?

Here's the counterpoint. The Civil War was completed in 1865 and all the Confederates long since died. Ergo, that section sunsetted with the passing of that generation and no longer applies. Then you laugh those fascist fucking leftists out of court while giving them the finger and/or grabbing your nuts at the same time. Fuck them.

*It never mentions the Confederacy explicitly but secession was Unconstitutional to begin with and not naming it was one more way of denying the CSA any sort of legitimacy. At least that's my understanding.

551 Berserker. Under Carter, the laws got passed to do away with most of the "insane asylums". Which then emptied out under the Reagan Administration. Who was powerless to stop the process, because of laws passed under his predecessor. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Those laws need to be re-legislated as Null & Void, and new Asylums built, staffed and populated with the .. well, I'd say "insane" but we can't build as many or large enough asylums as to house every democrat, now, can we?

But it might be suitable as to employ such domestic muzzies as might want to torment the afflicted, and afflict the tormented, as the "staff" in such institutions?

556 Jim I don't know, but some here do, I think a big part of the end of the old mental health system were court rulings. And of course the horror stories and abuses. And as you know, the most fundamental part of our system as designed - greatest power in the hands of checked/balanced, accountable, elected representatives - has eroded to near nothing. With courts filling much of the void.

So you'd still be right, new laws are needed, but - good luck with that.

563 Secession was regarded as implicit- at least in the south. Honestly it makes a certain amount of sense. The state power was far greater before the CW. Each was almost it's own country, loosely and formally connected and aligned with each other. Like a league of merchant families.

So, you have just split away from one government that had grown intolerable. The Founders literally saw Tyranny climbing through the windows (as I remember someone once saying.) The protections against that are rife in the constitution if you read it with that in mind.

But I'll further stipulate that the released and roving insane, then became the oxidizer for the full-orbital burn of the Demonsaniac Trajectory of the Democratic Demonsaniacs. See: AOC/Bernie/Lieawatha, etc, Q.E.D.

We want to be left in peace and left alone, and they want nothing less than to control us at the cellular and pocket change level of existence. The disagreements are on non-peaceable trajectories, it seems. But I refuse to be at peace with Tyranny, nor subject myself to it by however I might find able to resist. There are those for whom an asylum would be a blessing. We do not have the will to demand proper care for those who will never be able to care for themselves; instead we leave them on the street and wait for them to be raped, murdered, or just plain die from exposure. Regardless of any abuses that might happen, state hospitals at least put a roof over their heads, fed them and medicated when it might help.

Find a better system, but leaving them to their own devices is not one.

576 In Las Vegas a week ago, we passed a poor fellow clearly out of his mind. It happened to be noon, so DH and I started saying the Angelus. The fellow began to rave so loudly we were quite certain he was at least oppressed but probably infested or even possessed. It couldn't be more stark.

Dude needed help, from an exorcist and then from inpatient care. He isn't going to get either. Truly awful.

578 There was a case in FL that broke the back of the asylums. Can't site it but it has to do with the ability of a second party to commit a person to an asylum.

This law prevented that mother from putting her son away, the one that shot up the school. My mind fails specifics but she had been working on it for six months.

579 Mendota is still a hospital for the criminally insane. Lots of weirdos have lived there, including Ed Geen and other creeps. Not sure what to do with people like that. If you put them in prison, then they victimize the other inmates. At least at Mendota, they believe you when you tell them your awful secrets that aren't all that secret any more.

I had a similar encounter last week, in the parking lot of a grocery store. I never figured out what the guy wanted, but clearly a very ill man, Heartbreaking.

Not certain. I have not been paying close attention to the thread tonight.

583 SFGoth wasn't there a landmark legal case that was key in ending the old system of mental health institutions, nationally I mean?

584 Mccarthy says he will strip key democrats of their committee assignment if he get redistricted. This should be fun and help the left take over the democrats in congress.

The key being *McCarthy*. Good luck to the Left and the Right if you're counting on him.

587 Just dump them all here. That's the way it's going.

588 There are those for whom an asylum would be a blessing.

Posted by: tcn in AK, Hail to the Thief at January 11, 2022 02:18 AM (eKvjl)

As much as One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest provided impetus to closing the worst of the insane asylums, Girl, Interrupted offered an alternate and justified view of their existence. Some can be helped. Many cannot. In a way, tossing them all back onto the streets is "the Soros DA" approach. How's that shit working out?

Posted by: GnuBreed at January 11, 2022 02:41 AM (F0YaR)

589 This is from the ACLU but it's the nut.

The ACLU's most important Supreme Court case involving the rights of people with mental illness was filed on behalf of Kenneth Donaldson, who had been involuntarily confined in a Florida State Hospital for 15 years.

He was not dangerous and had received no medical treatment. In a landmark decision for mental health law in 1975, a unanimous Supreme Court ruled that states cannot confine a non-dangerous individual who can survive on his own, or with help from family and friends.

But reading this article and one from Psycho Today it appears that there was a concerted, national left wing push - lawfare - to accomplish this

Rather the Confederates were so stupid and arrogant that they thought they could get away with it and the Union would fold.

596 Morning, all,

The essay on "learned stupidity" was excellent. I see it every day at the university where I work. The entire charade of face diapers, clot shots, supplements to the clot shots, standing an arbitrarily-decided distance from your coworkers, Zoom calls to the person in the next room . . . Three of my coworkers all have Ph.D.s, one an M.A. I'm the only lowly bachelor's degree holder in the bunch. Yet they have gone gaga while I am looking at the situation as it is.

As I recall, Rhett Butler voiced the opinion in at least one scene that the Confederacy was insane to think they could win a war with the North. And was mocked for it. No doubt he reflected the view of the few sane people in the southern states at the time.
