The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“And, goddamnit, Joe! It is your job to make sure it is us. And if you don’t see it that way, resign. We need somebody in your chair who realizes that democracy could be dead a year from right now. We want that to be you. but if it isn’t, the rest of us don’t have any more time to wait or to waste,” Keith Olberman

I believe he needs some serious couch time. And a sporty white "sport" coat.

Quote II

“We sign their checks and you best bet that I’m going to run a boatload of people against you guys, there ain’t gonna be no easy peasy election next time. … you guys are toast. I don’t care what you did in your community because this is enough. You can go do all the good you want but when you poison my kids’ mind, it’s done, you’ve crossed the line so I’m letting you know, we’re pissed and it’s enough.” California resident and parent, Jeff Perrine

Quote III

None of this has shaken my support for the Democratic agenda, which I still endorse wholesale." Angie Schmitt

Slaps head and mutters, "Same as it ever was".

Karma strikes. Schadenboner ensues.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tested positive for COVID-19 Sunday.

The Democrat politician's office released a statement saying she is experiencing symptoms and quarantining at home.

“Representative Ocasio-Cortez has received a positive test result for COVID-19,” the statement said. “She is experiencing symptoms and recovering at home. The Congresswoman received her booster shot this Fall, and encourages everyone to get their booster and follow all CDC guidance.”

BOSTON, MA – Band students in a Massachusetts school district banned children from blowing into their instruments, citing the spread of new Covid-19 variant.

We really are a lost country. The people who are "Educators" certainly do not possess common sense or any sense of curiosity.

Texas Teacher Put 13-Year-Old Son in Car Trunk Because She Didn’t Want to Catch COVID-19: Police

A teacher put her teenage son in the trunk of her car because she did not want to catch COVID-19 from him while driving, according to authorities in Houston, Texas. Sarah Hadassah Beam, 41, was taking him to get tested again, officers said.

According to Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District police, a health official was at Pridgeon Stadium on Monday receiving information from vehicles in line for COVID-19 testing. Beam was there, officers said. She said her 13-year-old boy tested positive for COVID-19, and she put him in the trunk to keep her from getting exposed to the virus while driving him for more testing, according to this version of events.

Leave it to the politicians to use the carrot/stick approach on "Sin tax items".

The number of appointments for the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine has risen sharply this week in Quebec, according to Health Minister Christian Dubé.

In a brief message posted to social media Friday morning, Dubé notes that in the last few days, appointments for first doses have increased from 1,500 per day to more than 6,000.

The minister took a moment to thank those who finally decided to get vaccinated, reiterating that it is never too late to receive a first dose of vaccine.

He explains the decision was made to curb an increase in cases of the highly contagious Omicron variant.

He says he hopes this measure will be an additional incentive for some people to get their first dose of vaccine against COVID-19, as more than 50 per cent of people currently hospitalized are non-vaccinated people, though they represent about 10 per cent of the population.

Misdemeanors will not land you in prison. And there are plenty of felony charges that are watered down to get a quick conviction. Those in prison are a different type of person.

So much for prison reform: More than 40 percent of prison inmates had 5-10 prior incarcerations

Seventy-eight percent of inmates had previous incarcerations.

Forty-two percent had 5-10 or more incarcerations.

The vast majority of prison inmates have multiple previous arrests and incarcerations. The vast majority have histories of violence.

The data below from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is from 2016. It was released in December 2021. It establishes the characteristics of prison inmates.

In case you didn't know it, Pollster Frank Lutz is stupid and on top of that a thoughtless asshole.

Frank Luntz politicizes DeSantis’ wife’s battle with cancer over Fla. governor’s stance on Covid testing

Well-known establishment pollster Frank Luntz started a war that he cannot win by butting his nose into Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ affairs in a way that the governor’s supporters, including his press secretary, did not appreciate.

It all started on Friday, when press secretary Christina Pushaw tweeted a video of her boss pointing out the foolhardiness of encouraging everybody to get tested for COVID.

“Think about it. Before COVID, did anyone go out and seek testing to determine if they were sick? It’s usually that you feel like you’re sick and then you get tested to determine what you may have come down with,” the governor said in the clip.

He later explained why this is an issue: “It’s essentially a lockdown by self. If you test positive but you are not sick or have no symptoms, you may have to isolate.”

Frank I think you should have weekly mammograms. For example in 2017 2,300 cases of male breast cancer were confirmed with 500 deaths.

Move along, nothing to see here. Just an Antifa thug with explosives.

HEY DEMS: Antifa Bro With Explosives Arrested On Anniversary Of Jan 6 … Do You Care?
Does an Antifa acolyte’s possession of explosives while loitering around a peaceful right-wing protest count as a ‘threat to Democracy’ or nah?

On the anniversary of the events of January 6th, a group of 86 people gathered to protest what they considered the wrongful detention of Jeremy Brown who is accused of participating in the events of that day. They gathered outside of the Florida detention center where he has been held while he awaits trial for federal charges.

Will the SCOTUS make the correct decision on the Kung Flu pricks?

Some on the left couldn’t help finding irony that two of the state attorneys arguing against President Joe Biden’s employer COVID-19 vaccine mandates before the U.S. Supreme Court Friday tested positive for COVID and therefore had to make their case remotely.

But the irony works both ways, because at least one of the two lawyers was vaccinated and boosted, while the status of the other is unknown.

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments regarding the legality of two Biden employer vaccine mandates. One regulation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires vaccines or testing for businesses with 100 employees or more

One freak beats another freak. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas – who is transgender – was defeated by a swimmer from Yale University – who is also a transgender individual. The unusual showdown happened during an Ivy League tri-meet between UPenn, Yale, and Dartmouth on Saturday.

Thomas – a biologically male swimmer – had been smoking the female competition while competing as a transgender athlete. This year, Thomas has obliterated several UPenn and Ivy League women's records while competing as a female. During the 1,650-yard freestyle race at the Zippy Invitational Event in Akron, Ohio, Thomas annihilated the second-place finisher by a whopping 38 seconds.

Who, what, where are answered in this story. But not "Why". I wonder why that is?

Footballer suffers heart attack on pitch
The Mali international's wife has sent a message to fans after he collapsed in the goalmouth during a game in Qatar

Al-Wakrah Media Officer Mohamed Al-Sulaiti told local TV that Coulibaly's heart stopped before he was resuscitated by medics.

A reporter remarked that Coulibaly's ordeal looked "similar" to the cardiac arrest suffered by Denmark ace Christian Eriksen at Euro 2020 in June 2021.

Eriksen recently returned to training after being released from his contract with Italian side Inter Milan because of Serie A rules prohibiting the use of his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

"I don't know if incidents of players collapsing on the pitch increased during recent weeks or it's just because the world is more connected than ever before," the Football Qatar founder added, claiming there had been similar scenes in Indonesia, Algeria, Oman and Croatia.

If I were a betting man, I would put down a $100 bill on the Kung Flu prick.

Let them eat cake bread. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Truck Driver Delivers Bread By Foot To Stranded Motorists On Interstate
January 5, 2022

A baking company came to the rescue of dozens of people stranded on the interstate in Virginia.

Casey Holihan Noe and her husband John, along with many other motorists, had been stranded on I-95 for over 20 hours and noticed that a Schmidt Baking truck was also stuck out on the road with them.

"After almost 21 hours of being stuck on 95 South, sleeping here over night, not having access to food or water, and all of the nearest towns being out of power we were tired, frustrated, and hungry," Casey said. "Many of the people stuck out here had small children, were elderly, had pets in the car, and hadn’t eaten in almost a whole day."

So, they decided to call Schmidt Baking Company in Baltimore in the hope that maybe it would be willing to offer whatever products were on the truck

54 Incompetence is not something people are born with - it takes special circumstances to create it.

Unions do not *give permanent employment* to the incompetent as much as it *creates the special circumstance* to produce incompetence.

Anyway, this is a sore point with me (an experienced personnel mgr.) since I think most people are competent at **something**, only you couldn't know that from looking at a lot of union shops.

Aldi can't be considered indicative, because their inventory is always very tight, and they have their own labels & distribution & whatnot, so what's missing today will be there tomorrow. They're from another reality.

But at the Normal American grocery store, there were some obvious gaps on shelves. I picked up the last six-pack of our preferred "bathroom tissue." Notably, we now have more in house than they have on the shelves.

A crimper that will do a satisfactory job on such heavy wire will be an expensive tool to buy for a one-off job. You can buy terminal ends with a screw-clamp arrangement, or solder-on terminals. Easiest is just to buy cables with pre-crimped ends.

235 My missing grocery store item was distilled water. We use it in the cast iron humidifier that sits on the fireplace insert. After going a couple of weeks with it gone from at least 9 different stores, I stumbled across some at an expensive grocery store. I bought 14 gallons which should last until we shut down the fire in the late Spring.

I use an impact crimper thats sold by All Balls for making custom battery cables for the harleys, which are 4 gauge. Sits on the bench, put the wire in it and whack it with a hammer. Crimps great. I think it was $45, and it will never break. I think summit racing has one for around $30. Cheap and effective.

4 Ga. is pretty scrawny as battery cables go. If you have a hammer, and punches or cold chisels, you can do a crimp, as long as you have a vee block, or a block with a U-groove to set the terminal in. Slip a piece of heat shrink sleeve over the cable, put the skinned cable end in the terminal, set the terminal in the vee block, and use a hammer to drive a dull punch or dull cold chisel down onto the terminal sleeve area. That will upset the sleeve and make a tight bond.

If you are anywhere near Apache Junction, bring it over here, and I will do it for you.

Quartzsite has a big gem and mineral show this time of year. I usually stop for gas there 'cause it's a buck cheaper per gal than on the Ca side. Not this time - never seen it so crowded. But yes -it is very nice weatherwise this time of year unless you're from coastal Orange County...

Bypassed the pump relay, and ran the pump about 30 seconds, to purge the lines of air. Tried the key, engine started and quit. Did this several times. Finally put my foot on the foot feed, tried the key, and it started and ran on all 8 cylinders. Would not idle, no way, no how. Basque is also a non Indo-European language (and an isolate, meaning it has no known connections to any other spoken language), but since only about 750K people speak it I wouldn't classify it as "major".

Vacuum advance, and centrifugal advance. Centrifugal advance provided your main advance curve, as a gasoline engine tolerates (and needs) more spark advance the faster it runs, up to a point. Vacuum advance gave additional advance during part-throttle operation, for sake of fuel economy, because the engine can tolerate more advance under part throttle than it can at full throttle.

The engine management computer does that all now, and does it more accurately.

That is right. Still do, but instead of having points and condensers, they have a solid-state trigger. Never need service, and if they fail, you replace them.
Years ago, large one-lung engines and many tractors had what was called an "impulse magneto". Cranking speed was so slow, that a regular flywheel magneto wouldn't make a spark, so they used impulse magnetos, which wound up a spring, and then released it at top dead center, to make a fat spark. Once the engine started, centrifugla flyweights disengaged the impulse mechanism, and it functioned as a regular magneto.

I can vaguely remember some analogy car clocks from the '70s. '74 LTD of my father's. Those things had piss poor accuracy.

The clocks in the radios now are pretty accurate, although they will drift somewhat over a few months.

As I was rambling and ranting about here a while back, I've noticed the clocks on some electronics, particularly the digital thermostats are pretty piss poor, relying on some cheap oscillator driven off the battery. The thermostat in the new house here is 24VAC powered as well as battery, and that think could count AC cycles, which is pretty dead accurate over a long term.

Exactly that. When the battery became almost dead, the solenoid could not really overcome the spring it was supposed to wind, and instead of a click, you would get a chatter or buzz, as the contacts burned out.

What most people don't know, is that those solenoid car clocks had a nifty mechanism that tweaked the clock's balance wheel spring every instance that the user set the clock. If the clock was ten minutes late, and you set it ahead a ten minutes, you also tweaked the adjustment to make it run a teensy-tiny bit faster. Eventually, you'd approach almost perfect timekeeping. (predicated upon the car being used almost daily, and having a fully-charged battery kept in it)

396 >> Yeah, but how much of that is because we have updating phones to know the 'real time'?

Appliance clocks, and AC powered wall clocks have always been pretty accurate over the long term. Basically anything household with a clock that was AC line powered (no battery) used some cycle counting to drive the clock.

Those will show drift on the cheaper battery oscillators pretty well over a month.

Note that the instantaneous accuracy of the AC line frequency is not all that precise. But what they do is slew the frequency slightly over the long term to make sure that the number of cycles over a few month's time is dead close to UTC.

Well, unlike regular spring-wound clocks, that typically had a regulator lever on the back, the backs of car clocks are pretty much out of reach, so it became necessary to incorporate the regulation function with the time set function. I expect about a month of steady use, and routine resetting would get it dialed in.

Take a very simple AC powered wall clock, old school, and you can still get them. They are powered by a little permanent magnet synchronous motor. Number of revolutions it turns is exactly proportional to the number of AC seconds.

Very simple mechanism. Now, as long as the national grid does that slight slewing they do, the number of revolutions is gonna agree precisely with UTC over the long term.

Leap seconds notwithstanding. The grid does indeed take leap seconds into consideration with that slewing. The standard is that the phase should be within +/- 30 seconds of UTC.

Speaking of leap seconds, a funny thing has happened. The earth's rotation has sped up a bit over the past couple of years. It's been about 6 years since a leap second was needed.

Long term, the earth's rotation is slowing, but various glitches cause it to speed up. It will be a while before we need another leap second. If the current speed up were to hold, we'd need a negative leap second in a few years.

But that's not expected to happen. Either way, we'll go through about 10 years without needing a leap second.

426 >> TY publius, that's interesting

It is if you're into this sort of thing, and the devilish details can get very involved. Basically, it's all about the difference between astronomical time, and a precise unit of time, the best with the latter being atomic clocks (accuracy of about 1 part in 10^14, one in ten trillion)

There are more definitions of "coordinate time" systems than you can shake a stick at, but the Big Three are UTC, UT1, and IAT.

IAT is just counting atomic time, based on that 1 part in 10 trillion definition of a second. UT1 is astronomical time, based on the mean rotation of the earth.

UTC is a compromise between the two. Leap seconds are the current price of that compromise, which is to keep UTC ticking at IAT, but periodically step it to keep it in sync with UT1.

429 Bypassed the pump relay, and ran the pump about 30 seconds, to purge the lines of air. Tried the key, engine started and quit. Did this several times. Finally put my foot on the foot feed, tried the key, and it started and ran on all 8 cylinders. Would not idle, no way, no how. Apparently it needs to be drive for ten minutes or so for the ECM to "relearn" how to control the idle air motor.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 09, 2022 11:41 PM (P3gRi)

Usually the ECM will allow the engine to (roughly) idle in limp mode (which AFAIK is equivalent to first start) so there might be something else.

While it might be something else the one thing I seemed to run into when the FI engines I worked on did that was a slightly off throttle position sensor (TPS).

432 Vacuum advance gave additional advance during part-throttle operation, for sake of fuel economy, because the engine can tolerate more advance under part throttle than it can at full throttle.

Well a better way to look at it I think, is the engine needs far more ignition advance under part throttle, low load conditions than centrifugal weights and springs can provide. That's why it was invented. Or put another, vacuum advance doesn't improve engine efficiency, but without it suffers about a 15 or 20 per cent reduction. Smog regulations for a time really buggered up the equation, as engine efficiency was sacrificed for a time to meet NOX regulations. Waste fuel right out the tail pipe, and then burn it in a catalyst. Yeesh.

The leap second is controversial, and from several angles. It all started with a precise definition of the second, a constant unit of time. Trouble is, the earth's rotation and even orbits are not constant to the level of accuracy we started being able to achieve at the turn of the 20th century and then with the development of atomic clocks.

The defined and redefined the SI second over the 20th century, gettting it more and more precise. Before 1972, they counted (what became) UTC with atomic clocks, but slewed the rate to stay in sync with UT1. They called this the "rubber second", as the UTC second was thus variable (to one part in some large number).

But then, as the needs for precision time keeping increased, some complained about the rubber second and demanded that UTC tick at atomic rate. The leap second system was introduced in 1972. At that time, the length of the mean solar day was 86,400.003s.

In 2020, the mean solar day had decreased to 86, 399.999 s. :-)

This stepping, or discontinuity in UTC with the leap seconds is also becoming problematic for the same people who demanded it, and they are trying to get that phased out. But there others opposed. The last meeting of all the various standards groups just punted on the question, and made no changes.

Me, I say, fuck this shit. Let Civil Time be UT1, and synced with Mr. Earth and Mr. Sun, as we want it to be. Let those who need dead constant temporal intervals and such go with IAT, which has been defined and running, and pay no attention to the Mr. Earth and Mr. Sun.

No small importance to any of this, it's a HUGE issue in orbital dynamics, de-conflicting satellites and space debris, deep space missions (see Webb t'scope), and etc.

But I don't think that the Weasel External Ballistics App will calculate much finer than seconds within a Minute of Angle, and perhaps the Corialis Effect outside of 800 yds. Oh yes indeed. See "ephemeris time", which are various coordinate time systems used for this sort of thing. JPL has its own, and there are many. Indeed, when you start throwing relativity, Mr. Einstein into, your notion of "constant time" gets fuzzy.

See "Barycentric coordinate time". That's the latest attempt to define a universal coordinate clock for solar system operations. It's a clock in free fall (around the center of the galaxy and with the larger motions of the universe) with the center of mass of the solar system, yet independent of the gravity well of the solar system.

Civil Time, or the most logical answer to "what time is it" for most purposes not concerned with such need not concern itself with such complications and vagaries.

If you want some "fun" if you're interest in astronomical vs constant time (local proper time in relativistic terms) and all that, here's an an exercise.

Come up with the ideal notion of UT1 and a calendar for Mars. There have been many attempts and sort of current standard now. We want to define a Martian day, and a Martian calendar and a Martian year.

Now, Mars' orbit is much more elliptical that Earth's, and her rotational axis is not as stable. Also, Mars' tiny little twin moons are useless for any notion of "month" that could be synced. So the "month" can be arbitrary, even you even want them.

So, the length of seasons on Mars vary considerably. All this will affect how you want to define the calendar. The Martian year is about 687 earth days. You'll want ot covert that to Martian days, or Sols, to use JPL language for the "day" on a given planet.

You've got some options there on just how you want to do things.

461 The thing that happened with the Teachers happened to the Postal Workers. And for the same reason.

Once you let the unions determine work rules and pay, those who are in charge of production and efficiency never are allowed to get the enforcement of the rules to do either one.

Plus the unions are all money laundering schemes for the Democrats. Particularly those that are involved with the government.

The Democrats create rules and force changes that favor union workers and the unions contribute more money to the Democrats. They wind up giving themselves more money and it's taken from the taxpayer.

The ruether brothers were government secret agents as was jackie presser of the teamsters. What good are conservatives are a better question.

just riffing off her email calling republicans weirdos.

and no. i don't look at porn. especially on the internet.

And thanks but I don't get my screens mixed up too often and it wouldn't matter anyway. I just spent 45 minutes shopping for groceries on Walmart. and doing some other requests to health care providers and other such places.

But thanks for looking out for me!

464 This is why I buy checks from checkworks.com.

I enter the routing number and account number. They suck the cost of the product out of the account first before they print the checks.

I get them in the mail.

465 I think they will try and run AOC. It's scary but she's like Obama; pampered and presented as something she's not.

She's an actress. With her way being smoothed before her. (do you really think an experienced politician from NYC decided to not run a campaign? Really?)

I don't understand why but even having been discovered beyond a doubt of existing, the Deep State has decided to continue to try and keep everyone convinced that the game is being played straight. That elections matter and the voters count.

That hasn't been true since wwii.

466 Oh, and they cost about 1/3rd of what a bank/credit union charges for checks.

Yeah. So the checks don't have the bank logo on them. Tough shit.

467 Keith O's problem is Communism should have died off decades ago but he is still thinking it will in a year but is fighting to sustain it.

The measurement of time is completely arbitrary. Pick whatever event takes your fancy and use it as your clock. As long as everyone uses the same measurement then everything will be fine.

it's when other events are used and/or other gradations are adjusted according to someone else's choice that the trouble starts.

470 @465 ignorance allos stupidity. Joe crowley's last poll a month before the election showed him way ahead. Polling was done weeks before election. She closed in the last month after a series of gaffs by crowley and a viral video by AOC. Also the children being taken away from their parents including babies infuriated democrats who were angry that democrat leaders like crowley could do nothing. Get out of your bubble.

471 I think these days I make out about less than 10 checks a year. Some places and situations just require them as it's easier than arguing or jumping thru hoops.

Plus, the only other option for me would be Postal Money orders and I'm too lazy to go down to the PO and get one.

I knew I left a hole there that someone could drive a joke thru as big as a tractor trailer but I couldn't figure how to phrase it without ruining MY joke on her tweet the other day about us being weirdos.

Whenever I want any sh!t out of you, I'll squeeze your head.

He may have had high numbers but he wasn't campaigning as he'd been assured it was all good. He was stabbed in the back or told to throw the race for whatever reason. And then they ran this actress found using a casting call appeal. Then paid off by a mysterious and singular organization that donated to her. Who she immediately paid back.
