Daily Tech News 2 January 2022

Top Story

  • Microsoft has been working hard to deliver a New Year gift to sysadmins: A Y2.022K bug. (Bleeping Computer)

Microsoft codes their spam filter updates with a number made up of the date and time (hour and minute) the update was released. For example, 2112311200 for an update released on mid-day New Year's Eve.

That's fine and perfectly workable except that they store it in a signed 32-bit integer. A 32-bit integer can only really store 9 digits and that's a 10 digit number. The maximum value is around 2147000000 which means that as soon as the first spam filter update of the new year was released, Exchange Server stopped delivering email.

Didn't quite think this all the way through, eh guys?

Questions and Answers

  • From Mrs Peel: Where can I get a SMALL android phone? I currently have a Sony Xperia Z2 compact.

It's a good question. Android phones seem to have all settled on 6.5" as the optimal screen size; there's very little variation. The Asus Zenfone 8 at 5.9" is one of the smallest but it's not cheap. (Android Central)

The other option is one of the new flip phones like the Motorola Razr or the Samsung Galazy Z Fold. These still have large screens but they fold in half. Of course that isn't cheap either.

Microsoft's Surface Duo 2 has a 5.8" screen - two of them in fact - but it makes the other models I just mentioned look cheap.

The iPhone 13 mini has a 5.4" screen but again, not at all cheap, and also not Android.

Drop questions in the comments on Saturday and I'll attempt to answer them on Sunday.

Completing the roundup - Generations 0 through 4 did this together, Gen 5 (including Aloe) and 6 did their own, and so has ID.

Nice touch to have IRyS fill out the six places on both Myth and Council.

Also if you want to join in the fun applications are now open. (Reddit)

HoloEN Gen 2 just launched last week in August but there's about a six month lead time from opening applications to launching a new generation so the timing is about right for Gen 3. Nijisanji overlaps this process so they can roll out smaller waves faster, but Hololive likes to launch an entire team of Power Rangers at once.

7 You know for all the hoopla newsletters and bulletins and memos over the incorrect use/sizing of storage variables as numbers. You'd think someone would be hyperconscious of it.

It's not like we have storage problems anymore when we have terabyte hard disks and gigabyte memory ram.

Yet programmers seem to be like scrooge when it comes to sizing their variables. Why put it in an actual number? Use a string array and then it will never ever run out of room. (well unless someone screws up their string allocations and garbage collection.

God it gets so frustrating. I'm a total amateur and I know better than this.

It's like they think they're still dealing with 640k memory and a 5 mb hard drive of the IBM PC of 1980. Haysus Christos.

8 They had a promo where I think you called the number and signed up for a meet and greet with Blondie? This was back in 1979? I think?

And it was tied to the song Call Me.

10 I feel Mrs Peel's pain--I recently had to do something about my dying Xperia Z1C and to say I'm not enthusiastic about the state of smartphones is like saying the HQ is not a fan of Anthony Fauci. I went with a refurb Samsung S10e because it was about the only thing on the market of the last 2-3 years that came reasonably close to hitting my target specs. Not bad, but a bit bigger than I'd like and the stupid Bixby button makes me want to root for North Korea. For the uninitiated, Bixby is Samsung's crummy voice assistant and on some of their phones like the S10 series it can't actually be disabled without logging in with a Samsung account (and thus defeating the purpose of disabling this obvious privacy problem).

My understanding is that the newer Sony phones still stick to around 2.5 inch width and are just extra long, so if hand-friendliness is the main issue they may still be worth a look. There's also been persistent rumors of a new Xperia Compact going around for a while, but so far it's just rumors and I don't recommend making any buying decisions based on that.

Two issues there:

1. Whenever you want to do calculations on one or more times--a very common task--everything would have to be converted to numbers and then back to strings, which is very time consuming.

2. The number of ways a programmer can fuck up a numeric variable pales in comparison to the number of ways a programmer can fuck up string operations. This is quadruply true for lower level, faster-running languages like C which is where the aforementioned time calculations tend to live.

12 That's an informative Viva Frei; thanks. Generally--and here, too--I find that he is way overwordy, but the germ of what he's saying is useful.

13 Another bad thing about phones getting bigger, is that cases need to get bigger (though every idiot with an iphone i know tends to not have a case, because how do you show the world you have an iphone if you have a case? Also they all have broken screens) I got a galaxy S8 last year because I'll take the most inexpensive, but reliable, phone i can find. With an Otterbox folio case it's almost impossible to comfortably fit in my jean pockets, i don't even wear my jeans tight like a svelt teen swedish boy. If I put on a pair of joggers to run to the corner store i need suspenders to keep them from falling between the weight of my phone, wallet and defensive stabbing implements.

You can tell the Canadian governments are worried, because they're breaking out the "all you science deniers are racist and misogynist" to try and get the support of the r-tards. None of this shit would have continued if everyone listened to me and started decorating their town squares with pikes..... with "experts" heads attached, 18 months ago.

Ther position of the Bixby button is the stupidest shit ever. Want to lower your volume? Oops you hit Bixby. Want to take a screenshot? Oops you hit Bixby.

And if you uninstall the program updates, the second you hit that button it starts reinstalling them all.

On my S8 I don't believe there's anyway to remove or disable it permanently, unless you root your phone, which i found out a week or two into have my phone, so I didn't want to reformat it just to delete the program.

If I wanted a personal assistant I'd just hire one of the port authority whores, like Ace does when he needs some dictation done.

Yes indeed! Highly recommended. That is heavily based on the theories of Joost Merloo, who coined the term "menticide".

As Robert Malone (the Most Interesting Man in the World) mentioned, all this was the result of an inquiry trying to determine what happened with Germany. They went barking mad. How'd that happen? How did a well edumacated, not dumb population go start, raving mad?

Blondie's "Call Me" is one of the great Exciting Songs. I have a copy of it on the flash drive in my car, along with Bonnie Tyler's "I Need a Hero," Al Wilson's "The Snake," the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running," and a bunch of Herb Alpert's tunes.

25 Now I don't speak or understand much French. But "appelle-moi" should really mean "name me," not "call me," since "Je m'appelle" means "My name is." This is the French word that led to the English "appellation," which means "name (of someone or something)" and not "phone call." So unless the French verb can also be used in the sense of "call on the phone," it seems an odd construction. You French experts can straighten me out.

27 Good morning Wolfus! How's your weather? Is it cooling?

Posted by: Rosasharn at January 02, 2022 05:27 AM (PzBTm)

28 I'm up a little earlier than I planned. Still 35-40 degrees too warm for the time of year, so I'll wear shorts and a polo shirt to go work out this am. The much-ballyhooed "cold front" is not due to arrive until about noon. (Even Miss Linda, who is stuck to this place like moss on a tree, has been saying this weather is "wretched.")

In the meantime, coffee, an Invaders episode with Susan Oliver, and the company of Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat.

I watch less TV than ever before, and only bought an Android smart phone in March of '20 so I could stay in touch with my boss during the Work-From-Home Panic. The screen is starting to separate from the body of the phone, so I suppose I might have to replace it (and this time get a case for it). No social media.

Ah, the "If Only It Were English" method of speaking a foreign language. In a James Blish novel he has a spaceman read a German inscription, "Wider den Tod is kein Krautlein gewachsen," and translate it as, "The fatter toad is waxing on the kine's cole slaw."

The literal translation of "Je m'appelle" is "I am called".
If you want to say "my name is" you would say something more like "Mon nom es". Appeller is used both in the sense of calling, as in calling someone a name, and calling as in calling them on the phone.

Of course, what do I know. I was last in a French class about the time that song was premiering on the radio.

46 "How did Nazi Germany happen? This is how."

I would suggest instead that we're about to see where Germany would have gone *without* the arrival of the Nazis.

When the Nazis are a potential solution to your problem, your problem is rather extreme.
