Western Europe’s Surrender To Russian Hegemony Is Inevitable As It Dismantles Its Energy Production Capabilities

Whatever the outcome from Vladimir Putin amassing troops along the Ukraine border, the big prize - Western Europe – is positioning itself to surrender to Russian hegemony without Putin ever needing to fire a shot.

With its suicidal climate religion, combined with a woke, cultural self-loathing, most of Western Europe has committed not to produce enough energy to feed its people or keep them warm in winter. So, with the Russian bear pawing at its door, Western European leaders have effectively put their own populations under siege, defiantly refusing to produce the energy they must have to survive.

Putin smiles. Why would he use his army to conquer a continent if his target chooses to freeze itself into submission?

Speaking of the climate religion, Putin is not a co-religionist. Russia has vetoed the passage of a United Nations Security Council resolution that for the first time would have treated climate change as a threat to peace.

Rest assured, he is quite happy for the West to commit suicide by not producing hydrocarbons, he just isn’t going to do the same in Russia.

It’s not just carbon-based energy that western Europeans are dismantling, it’s nuclear too. Germany has dismantled most of its nuclear production during Angela Merkel’s destructive tenure, and its final nuclear power plants will be shuttered by the end of 2022.

It was only 10 years ago that nuclear power made up almost a quarter of the electricity generated in the country.

Following the impact of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown – German Chancellor Angela Merkel took the decision that same year to phase out the country’s nuclear power stations by 2022.

Merkel sought to appease the angry climate Gods by turning almost exclusively to green energy. But as has been documented elsewhere, there is often little or no sunshine and wind in Germany.

But neighboring Russia has plenty of natural gas to replace Germany’s lost energy production.

Unsurprisingly, France and Germany also ban fracking, as do several smaller western European countries, including Ireland. Modern, industrialized countries that refuse to produce sufficient energy will not survive as independent countries.

How Europe Has Become So Dependent On Putin For Gas (Bloomberg 11/10/2021)

Gazprom [a Russian state-run energy company] supplied almost a third of all gas consumed in Europe in 2020 and will likely become an even more important source in the short term as the continent shrinks domestic production.

Some of the biggest economies are among the most exposed, with Germany importing 90% of its needs.

Ironically, with green sources “unexpectedly” failing to produce enough energy, and with most of its nuclear plants closed, Germany is increasingly having to use dirty, old-fashioned coal to avoid blackouts.

Guess who is Germany’s largest supplier of coal? Russia, of course.

How bad are things getting in Europe? This headline was from September, before winter’s cold weather had even hit.

European Energy Crisis Forces Factories To Shut Down (Yahoo Finance - 9/17/2021)

It then got very cold in Autumn, and things are getting worse.

Power Surges to Record as Europe Struggles to Keep Lights on (Yahoo Finance – 12/21/2021)

Electricity prices surged to a fresh record as France scrambled to keep its lights on, sucking up supplies from the rest of Europe.

Europe’s Energy Crisis Is About To Get Worse As Winter Arrives (Bloomberg – 11/28/2021)

“If the weather gets cold in Europe there’s not going to be an easy supply solution, it’s going to need a demand solution,” said Adam Lewis, partner at trading house Hartree Partners LP.

A “demand solution” means that people who need energy to heat their homes will just have to “demand” less energy. In other words, they can expect to freeze.

Is there any hope for western Europe to avoid the energy catastrophe that awaits it? What if Russia were to send it more natural gas?

The long-awaited start of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Germany from Russia would ease the continent’s energy crunch. The project is finished, but has run into regulatory hurdles and it’s unclear when flows will start.

More Russian energy to the rescue! Its new Nord Stream 2 pipeline will double the volume of gas pumped by Russian-controlled gas giant Gazprom directly to Germany.

Perhaps the troop buildup on the Ukrainian border is Putin’s way of establishing a bargaining chip. In exchange for Russia not invading Ukraine, Europe agrees to open up the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Then once the gas is flowing, western Europe wouldn’t dare turn it off, not if it meant starving and freezing its people.

It may be too late for Western Europe’s citizens to vote themselves out of the mess their ruling class has inflicted on them. To get the energy needed for basic survival, Germany and most of the rest of the continent will have to accept being Russian vassal states. The options of either freezing or obeying Putin are not good options, but sadly, Western Europe has already chosen that path.

Russia in every war;

Yeah, they had us the first half, I'm not gonna lie, they had us. We weren't defeated, but they had us. But it took guts, it took an attitude--that's all it takes. That's all it takes to be successful is an attitude. And that's what our coach told us. He said, 'Hey, it's gonna be tough. It's gonna be tough. It's gonna be hard. You're gonna go out there, you're gonna battle, you're gonna fight, you're gonna do it for one another. Do it for each other, you're gonna do it for yourself, you're gonna do it for us, and you're gonna go out with this win.' And we believed that, we truly did. And it's an awesome feeling.

21 The lovely and well-read though non-political Mrs naturalfake surprised me yesterday by stating out-of- the-blue, "Germany's energy policy is crazy. Well, all of Europe, but Germany especially."

When she notices things like that and bothers to comment on it, things must be really bad. And they are, as documented above.

Insane yet here we are with a Senile Dickweed trying to destroy our energy production in the same manner.

2022 is going to be lit! Or rather unlit if Biden and the Democrats have their way.

Does it make me a bad person to hope the Blue States have a horrible cold, powerless, and terribly expensive winter, so maybe, maybe, maybe they can get a clue where this stupid, pointless destruction of our energy production leads and maybe, maybe, maybe they vote again the Dims or at least stay home?

32 If you take a materialistic, functional review of religion - it provides a social bond that allows the members of that religion to work together to achieve things.

And...modern leftism absolutely fails at that. It splits people apart and takes tools and processes already learned and refuses them to members of the society.

74 I have been involved in several gas pipeline projects. You know the best place to put a new gas pipeline? Right beside the old pipelines in your existing ROW that you already leveled and permitted and continue to carefully maintain!

The route of Nord Stream 2 made zero sense to me - until I saw Putin's latest moves regarding Ukraine.

If he invaded Ukraine, then Germany's population would be threatened during a cold winter by any damage to the pipeline. Germany (and NATO) would have to come to Ukraine's aid.

The German political leadership KNEW this. That is why they are happy with the new pipeline that follows the expensive sea route. They have sold out the Ukrainians for their own selfish ends.

By failing to project strength to make a potential war more costly and painful to the aggressors, the Leftists ALWAYS cause more wars.

The best part is they build their huge California-style mansions, and local developers build high-density housing for the less wealthy locusts, on previously open land -- and then blame climate change when it's later wiped out by fires, flooding, or hurricanes. Gee, maybe there weren't homes there before for a reason?

Seeing this now with the Boulder County wildfire horror. The town of Superior had a population of 255 in 1990, and by 2019 it was over 13,000. There's a reason that land was vacant for so long -- it's terribly windy. Add to it that adjacent town of Marshall was likewise sparsely populated until recently because of the mines. It was the perfect storm of fire and strong winds that are common to that area.

Granted, some of those locations are remote and impoverished, but there's no reason not to believe we'll all be eyeing the neighbor's stately oak tree if this comes to pass here... which it will.

Some people somewhere might do better for some time. But the world is worse for it. The only good is to stop an evil aggressor and even then you better put all you have into it and be done.

A world that improves itself through challenges when those challenges aren't war and suffering would be better. The expansion has usually been that challenge but we got nowhere to expand to, up maybe? Ace has talked about this. A lot of the solutions to the problems we have come from people packing up and going to a new place. But we're out of new places.

Posted by: The Arc Of History! at January 02, 2022 12:15 PM

And I think the Chinese have now joined in with the subversion of the Western economies.

Russia wants to ban fracking in the U.S., because they earn way more hard currency from the increase in their oil sales.

China wants to increase all energy prices in the U.S. Any manufacturing that uses more than negligible amounts of energy then moves to China.

Bonus prize for both - a weaker U.S. economy and therefore a weaker U.S. military!

Right after the Soviet Union collapsed the world market was flooded with US WWII manufactured Thompson SMG's and M3 grease guns and parts. Seems every time we sent them a tank, M5 Stuart or M4 Sherman we included all of the equipment for the tank including the SMG's for the crew. The Soviets took those out and used theirs instead, putting the US gear in storage.

170 How much difference does it really make when we vote? I have kind of come to the conclusion that regardless of how I voted in the last 40 plus years, we would have ended up in this same place.

I remember for years seeing that in most Euro countries polling would show the people wanted all sorts of "conservative" things from the their governments, but then supposedly voted it various forms of leftwing governments.

The standard argument is sure they want to get rid of the immigrants, have capital punishment, and more freedom overall but...they want that sweet sweet socialist dole more.

But...I don't think this is correct. Most of the Euro "rightwing" parties are ok with the socialist dole too - at least for citizens - and yet the same old governing party retreads just keep getting re-elected.

Barely lost. The shockers which turned the election were the less than 1% victories for Trump in long-time Democrat strong-holds of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Had she taken those 3 states, she wins. Trump won each of those states by the thinnest of margins. The common thread for each of those states was the extremely high third-party voting. And, at least in Michigan, Hillary earned less votes in 2016 than Obama earned in 2012.

Trump did not really do much better in 2016 than Romney did in 2012. It was just that Hillary did worse in 2016 than Obama did in 2012 in a few key states. 10,700 votes in Michigan. I really think it was due to the Hillary campaign completely underestimating the lack of enthusiasm for her and the large contingent of people choosing to vote third party. Democrats did not make that mistake in 2020.

Stalin feared his generals. He feared a coup. Paranoia was central trait with Stalin.

Stalin was the best "palace intriguer" of the early Soviet Union. Had he not been, Trotsky would have done the same things Stalin did, just to a slightly different list of people.

Which is the interesting part about Khrushchev, he managed to succeed in the system while be willing to change it at first opportunity.

And...modern leftism absolutely fails at that. It splits people apart and takes tools and processes already learned and refuses them to members of the society.

Yes, it does make it easier for the elites to rule...but historically societies organized in this way fall to "barbarians" quickly.
Posted by: 18-1 at January 02, 2022 11:52 AM (ESjRY)

Going back to an old post by ace a while back, there's a reason why establishing an organized, official religion is pretty much the first act of every major civilization.

Not only does it provide the functions you mention in a materialistic sense, but it also provides a defense against one of the most harmful parts of human nature - magical thinking. Jung's work showed that magical thinking was endemic to the human condition, it emerges spontaneously in peoples across the world.

Organized religion stuffs it in a box labeled theology. Getting rid of the box only sets it free to infest something else, and it settles on the next biggest thing in their life - politics.

331 And, as of this year, Germany is done with nuclear power. It's easy for them to do - I'd be willing to bet that they will buy juice from France. France gets 70% or so of its electricity from nukes, but that won't stop the Germans. They can virtue signal about how they don't produce evil nuclear energy while buying from electricity from others who have no qualms about nukes (if, that is, I am right).
Posted by: Snake Spirit at January 02, 2022 01:12 PM (CdZ4i)

Electricity can be transported around 1000 to 1200 miles economically, IIRC, which means that France will have no problems sending electricity to whatever area in Germany that needs it.

France will make a handsome profit selling electrical power to Germany. Good for the French.

401 Russia's concerns about NATO are a rational response to our post-Cold War behavior. Rather than mothballing NATO after the USSR collapsed, we expanded it. Our leaders have consistently treated Russia as a significant threat (e.g., Obama's aborted attempt to bring Ukraine into NATO, Romney identifying Russia as the adversary, Trump chastising countries for not living up to their military spending commitments as required by the alliance). Our foreign policy has remained hostile since the Berlin Wall fell. We've been dull and unimaginative in terms of trying to build a future Europe that doesn't continue the East-West rivalry.

403 And the Russian state/oligarchy doesn't need any external menace to maintain control, that formula is no part of their schtick, as has been the case in some western countries historically. We're talking Russia and the inner remnants of the Russian Empire here. There's no need to tame a broad grass-roots desire for freedom or change.

421 bear that's all based on the same imaginary problems. NATO should have been junked as you say, but nature took its course and it withered very quickly and has long been a non-factor for Russian security. There's nothing rational about Russian fears of the US or the western Europeans, hasn't been for decades.

Let's just take Ukraine. OK, postulate that the stupid idea of adding them to NATO had been pursued. Objective, material difference to Russia? A supine, limp, shell of an historically outdated alliance adding a broke, disorganized member.

Russia's ethnic irredentist issues on the margins (like Donbass) or manufactured Soviet legacy ones, like Latvia, aren't issues that threaten Russian security. Being an impediment to Russian freedom of action (and even that is beyond NATO's or America's reach WRT the small issues at hand) is not the same as being a threat to Russia.

The proposed mutual security document actually reads like a slightly modified INF Treaty, it's ridiculous. Takes no account of the political-military realities of today, or the last 2 decades.

436 Our foreign policy seems to presuppose nothing has changed in several decades as well. If we want a foreign policy (our and theirs) based on a sober assessment of today, we're all going to have to stop behaving like it's still 1989. The point I'm trying to make is that you can turn this problem around and make the same point from the opposite side: Russia, unlike the USSR, isn't remotely a threat to us, and our security posture, atrophied as it is, doesn't make a lick of sense either. European security needs an out-of-the box rethink much like the one Trump did in the mid-East (focusing on small doable agreements rather than a comprehensive peace and normalization of relations across the board). Being that we remained a superpower for some time after the Cold War, and Russia didn't, I think we shoulder most of the blame here. I get it - we're all prisoners of our past - but our leaders have screwed this up for decades, much like everything else.

If NATO was dedicated to offensive military operations, you have a point. Problem is, that's not what NATO is about, and that undermines your argument. Further undermining it is that it isn't as if NATO isn't signing up all the former Soviet republics. Has NATO headed any further east than the former Warsaw Pact nations?

443 We really shouldn't complain about Europe. The one thing the communists now running Europe will figure out 10 years from now is that they ruined the place.
