Well the problem is the interpretation of civil rights laws. Right to property overrules any generalized sense of "that's mean and unfair". This is where the BAKE THE CAKE thing comes in. Either businesses are free to do what they desire with their own money and property or they are not FULL STOP. As long as they are not violating actual rights (like murdering customers or stealing) then they should be allowed to do what they wish.

But the system has to be free to make that work: as in no monopolies and no cronyism using the government to prop up and protect themselves.

There is no way to do a menu that big well. The bigger the menu, the lower the average quality is likely to be.

My favorite restaurant in my town has like 12 things on the menu. It's on one piece of paper (two-sided because the layout is generous). Every single thing on it is damn good.

It's a much bigger space (if cops get violent at some 20'x20' SoHo Italian restaurant there's a much bigger chance of getting injured or someone else being injured, raising your charges from trespassing to assault) The big corporations are more like to not press charges, especially since you can point to other incidents where they don't like BLM burning their place down. The burden is on a huge company if there is damage (or if you need to sue them) and not some small business that can be ruined by any incident. And it's easier to film there, with lots of space and bright lights.

But in reality no business is free. They are totally regulated by both Federal and State governments. So as they are Defacto agents of the State, and are now following a Government mandate, they ARE the State, and thus should not be able to take away your Rights.

And yes, the more stuff on your menu the worse the quality is likely to be. Its very hard to get consistent quality results from dozens of options because the chef will not be proficient, comfortable, and prepared for that many choices.

There are exceptions. Most ethnic food is a combination of the same 6 or so ingredients mixed in different proportions so you can prep easily for that. But a place like Applebees that tries to have everything all at once, its going to suck.

And it does.

I'm in SE Michigan, so not nearly as bad as places like NYC. But I just think about what I would be leaving behind if I decided I had to move.

I've been here since Sept 1999, so 22 years now. Have friends through work, friends through softball leagues, friends through walleyball leagues, familiarity with the area, my job (though since we're now work-from-home indefinitely, I could keep my current position and move anywhere in the country and still do my job remotely). So for me, I would be leaving behind 22 years of relationships and making this place my home and heading off at age 46 into the complete unknown. Not having friends or family, completely on my own, in a new place, having to start over. Scary thought for me, considering I am one who now likes my routine and lifestyle. Were this 20 years ago, no problem, I would move. Now though, different story.

252 I've been here since Sept 1999, so 22 years now. Have friends through work, friends through softball leagues, friends through walleyball leagues, familiarity with the area, my job (though since we're now work-from-home indefinitely, I could keep my current position and move anywhere in the country and still do my job remotely). So for me, I would be leaving behind 22 years of relationships and making this place my home and heading off at age 46 into the complete unknown. Not having friends or family, completely on my own, in a new place, having to start over. Scary thought for me, considering I am one who now likes my routine and lifestyle. Were this 20 years ago, no problem, I would move. Now though, different story.

In 2020 I packed and moved from my city home of 20 years to a much smaller town well outside an urban area. Seems to be working out pretty well. Unless you move into a shithole you'll be fine.

I'd been where I was for 18 years but I was already prepared to go because I was also leaving a special living circumstance that made it financially feasible to live where I was. And the company was closing down and I could not afford to live in the area.

316 When eating at places like Applebee's you just need to know what not to order, for example anything breaded. I had a hamburger at my local Applebee's maybe six months ago and it was very good. There was a generous amount of obviously not preformed meat and all else was fresh. They service was great as well. Much better than the dreck at fast food joints (Looking at you Five Guys). I got sick on a McDonald's burger probably 20 years ago and haven't been back since.

Not directly. Their market segment is called "fast casual" (above fast food ("quick service") and below a normal sit-down restaurant with waiters and stuff), and there are a number of entries. Panera is the big one. Pei Wei is sort of a Chinese food version. There are various others, but a lot of them seem to be regional. We have one here called "Chicken Salad Chick" that is a lot like Panera, only they focus on - just guess - chicken salad. It's good, but its shtick is how feminine everything is. It's fine, but I think their target market is far more the wine mom than it is me.

Which is why the coffee is awful and tastes like it's been run through a smelter. Starbucks coffee in the store sucks because it's not a drink, it's an ingredient. If you're loading up a drink that is mostly milk and sugar, the coffee needs to be extremely powerful just to have a hope of punching through the noise to give the final product a hint of being something with coffee in it. Make a "Frappucino" (or however the hell it's spelled) with normal coffee and you're unlikely to even taste the coffee at all.

I remember a video from a restaurant owner who was pleading with the health department employees (and may have been cops with them as well) who came to shut him down. He was out on the front sidewalk in front of his restaurant trying to prevent them from getting in and pleading with them that he needed to stay open to keep his employees employed, etc. I think it was from last summer.

There was a fantastic bakery in Los Altos CA called La Boulanger in the 70's. Some of their breads were fantastic, and killer croissants. They made killer sandwiches, but only offered maybe half a dozen, very simply prepared. Like shaved roast beef, chicken salad, roast turkey etc. And soup du jour. Sadly, they were purchased by some conglomerate and turned into a chain Panera copied. I've never eaten Panera although had a niece that worked there. I mistakenly purchased some of their tomato bisque at the market thinking it was the market brand (which was very good). I swear, it was canned tomato paste and milk. That's it. I threw away a $7 carton and had the crackers for lunch. Avoid.

There was a terrible story in the local news the other day. Guy got in an accident and rolled his car. He was able to get out of the car, and when he got out he was hit by another car. Very similar to what happened to my grandmother many years ago. Inwood section of Manhattan which is very near the Bronx. She was using a walker after having a hip replacement. 82 years old. The point I'm trying to make is that the channel is attracting so many independents and Democrats, moreso than their competition that more explicitly try to appeal to them, and at the same time they are upping the amount of conservative things said, meaning that the conservative ideas are spreading further and faster.

The rise and fall of Fox does not really interest me. The idea that Fox is disingenuous about conservatism is not something I'm against. I imagine they are, considering their owners and board. However, it is just to note the irony of them trying to appeal to conservatives again at the same time that more than conservatives are watching, much more than those who watch MSNBC and CNN, combined.

Graham did a great job of cross booking a lot of acts that would never have entered mainstream listening and subsequently, never been successful.

Old blues acts, soul singers, jazzmen...all benefitted from their exposure to crowds that were there to see the artists that these less well known acts influenced.

No - carbon dioxide, water, ammonia, a few other compounds to provide elements that make up more complex compounds, and a spark to drive the reactions that might form. Each spark gave a chance for something to happen. The idea was to simulate what might happen on the early earth.

But the argument was about producing the stuff our life is made from, and that has been found to be easy enough, not the billions to one claimed above. Obviously building that up is harder, but some of the smaller viruses are very simple on a semi-living thing scale. We see lots of intermediates out there.

None of this affects an argument for or against God. God can set up life using mechanical processes, or he could set up billboards proving his existence any day.
