CDC Changes Quarantine Rules from 10 Days to 5 Days -- As Fauci Admits It's About Economics

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just dropped adjusted quarantine guidelines for COVID-19 and vaccinated individuals. This is after an outcry from the airline industry that the guidelines and the surge in Omicron variant cases were causing staffing shortages.

Quoting AP:

U.S. health officials on Monday cut isolation restrictions for Americans who catch the coronavirus from 10 to five days, and similarly shortened the time that close contacts need to quarantine.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said the guidance is in keeping with growing evidence that people with the coronavirus are most infectious in the two days before and three days after symptoms develop.

Is this based on "The Science"?

Nah, son. It's based on what everything the government does -- politics, and appeasing powerful interests. Such as the airline industry.

The thing about cutting the requirements down to 10 days to five days is that it might make scientific sense, but I'm curious as to why they are only discovering this now, after going on almost two years of all this? Why didn't they apply this before? It would seem it should have already been apparent. They say it's that the decision is based on keeping things open because of the sheer number of people testing positive with Omicron.
Dr. Anthony Fauci made it clear on CNN that the move was at least in part political and economic, "to keep society running."

Now I don't object to the change -- but I am going to underline that this decision, like the recommendation to close schools, was made not based on "The Science" but by the request of powerful lobbies. The airline industries wanted this; the teachers unions demanded schools be closed.

Though I bet "The Science" is much, much stronger in supporting this latest change.

But still, that isn't why the decision was made. The science has been clear since May 2020 that children have low risk from covid and transmit covid at very, very low rates but we've kept schools closed, and kept kids masked, because the Democrats' key labor constituency and donor group the teachers union demanded we punish kids to make teachers feel Important and Respected.

And it's probably been clear for a long, long while that 10 days quarantine was excessive and unnecessary.

The reason for the change, then? Not science -- complaints from industry.

Barely anything in the past two years of the pandemic has been done because of science. It's all politics. And dirty, crude, base-stroking politics at that.

So you did a cost/benefit analysis on aggressive and disruptive measures to contain Omicron, and found that they are not worth pursuing.

Two questions CNN *should* have asked, but didn't and never will:
1. Was this kind of cost/benefit analysis - or any kind - performed at any point prior to this, whether in the initial outbreak or later during that outbreak, or with the Delta variant?
2. Given this admission that at least some COVID response measures are generally deleterious and too expensive to be justified, have you reassessed any of the existing COVID response measures for cost/benefit tradeoffs and will your organization be recommending a stand-down on any other existing measure?

Those questions would be polite, neutral, incisive, non-inflammatory, reasonable and informative. It will never happen.

I think there's a battle being waged within the State/Party/Media Complex over this issue. There are clearly big chunks of the Complex that are in "COVID is over" mode, but it is clearly not uniform. The last week has been downright schizophrenic. It was less than a week between Brandon's "Dark Winter of COVID" address and his "no Federal solution it's on the states" statement. The Press is going two directions on this, too. They're fighting it out internally, but the battle is leaking out into the public square.

I've taken vit D along with zinc for more than a year. Also K and some C. I take flonase and certizine during allergy season. I haven't been sick that entire time even with everyone around me getting sick. I've never been a vitamin/mineral taker. But this has convinced me. I've probably had the longest period of not being sick in many many years.

I think they had the groundwork in place to do it. Shortly after the idiot usurper was sworn in, the WHO changed their testing guidelines to something sensible (only symptomatic tests with diagnostic confirmation are considered true positives) and the rates began to decline as expected. As TJM points out, the scuttlebutt is that they had a victory lap planned. Something went wrong.

Whether it was the Karens in the base, or the press, or the governors and bureaucrats and other power players being unwilling to relinquish control, or the corporate players, or something else - well, I have no idea. But I have started to think that they *wanted* to do "COVID is over" stuff 6-8 months ago but for some reason were unable to do so. With the failure of the rest of the agenda, they now have to force the issue. They're out of political capital now and have to get a win.

Not really. The schools still have many of the same expenditures. There might be some savings from reduced utility costs, etc., but those are a small portion of expenditures compared to teacher salaries, bond repayments, etc.

Churn is a huge problem in streaming right now. People sign up for a month and cancel after they've caught up.

But the bigger problem is an accounting one. How much of a streaming revenue stream do you attribute to specific projects? They have viewing numbers they will never make public, but the more expensive stuff they put on there while the subscription numbers plateau it's just a whole bunch of dollars looking for a smaller slice of the subs pie.

Streaming cannot support this kind of product.

Not how it works these days. Instead you get put up for sale (like, say CNN) to another conglomerate who might start selling the office furniture away or merge you into something else. The true test is who listens to you any more. Newspapers are dead - even the NYT has virtually no influence. Cable is dying. They aren't have a lot of luck outcompeting others on freer platforms, and using monopoly power to force away competition just forces your opposition to work harder while avoiding your infastructure bloat.

Churn is a major problem and it always will be. Streaming is not like cable. Streaming is mercenary. You have to have a constant pipeline of new stuff people *want* in order to keep the subscription. If you're depending on the library, your subscriber isn't go to stay put for more than three months. And even with a steady stream of new stuff, the culture has shifted. The water cooler is less of a thing. We see some phenomena like this (Tiger King comes to mind), but it has way less power. Even with a good pipeline, people can just wait until there are several things they want to watch and subscribe for another 1-3 months.

300 Churn is a major problem and it always will be. Streaming is not like cable. Streaming is mercenary. You have to have a constant pipeline of new stuff people *want* in order to keep the subscription. If you're depending on the library, your subscriber isn't go to stay put for more than three months. And even with a steady stream of new stuff, the culture has shifted. The water cooler is less of a thing. We see some phenomena like this (Tiger King comes to mind), but it has way less power. Even with a good pipeline, people can just wait until there are several things they want to watch and subscribe for another 1-3 months.

The other problem is that the licensed material (movies, mostly) jumps from platform to platform. What you signed up to watch on Prime this month might be on Hulu next and Netflix after that.

Yup, and that library was also a big factor in their purchase of Fox. They wanted the library and they wanted exclusivity for their own platform. Well, they got it. And Disney+ did gangbusters growth before stalling out.

Which is to be expected. Growth is easy at the beginning. But the library is not all-powerful, and while it might get people to walk through the door, it won't keep them on the estate. Eventually you watch what you want, or you binge and burn out. And then you'll cancel and come back in 6-12 months to watch some more of whatever it is. But why pay in the meantime? You don't.

The frustrating thing about this for me is that Disney doesn't actually care about the Fox library. Like...at all.

They only coveted it so they could mine it for IP for new movies and shows, like the new sequel to Home Alone or the Alien series they're producing.

In terms of the actual library? They're letting it languish. No releases of old titles on streaming services or physical media. It's kind of pissing me off while I'm going through John Ford's filmography, so much of which went out through Fox.

Thus you get nonsensical birthdates, etc. That is where you get loads of people registered to one common address. You also vote in the names of real people that have moved, duplicate votes in two or more states, etc. Then there is vote buying via harvesting--pay people to give you their ballot to vote. Just setting up that comparison in a valid way is quite a challenge, given the circumstances.

But looking at the macro numbers, one has to find a clear departure from an expected path, or a path experienced by some similar population (in this case, a form of influenza, this means age and Hope-Simpson adjusted). Not aware of any, any more than for all the other "interventions" - masks, lockdowns, distancing, quarantines.

Yup. It's flatly illegal for them to make a value judgement on your exemption demand, You sincerely believe something or you don't, and they have to take it at face value. Depending on whether you're the government or a private company, religious tests are illegal either under the First Amendment or under the Civil Rights Act. Federal contractors are ambiguous, but both might directly apply.

I have had my three shots of Moderna, two plus booster, every one of them had more immediate aftereffects (okay, not quite the fever) than the virus itself. I've spent six days really incapacitated by the shots vs four-and-change somewhat incapacitated by OG Wuflu.

I still look at Ohmybod or whatever the current variant is as probably God's Vaccine. We'll see. But it sure as hell isn't worth panic. None of it really was. I'm not young, I'm arguably immunocompromised by an indolent cancer, I'm kinda on the lower fringe of the people Cuomo was killing. Live your life.

In criminal trials, circuits are split on doctor patient privilege per se but often apply other rules of evidence to exclude it (relevance for example). Civil cases involving federal questions are different than diversity cases. In diversity cases, many states have such privileges, on federal questions, it is complicated like in criminal matters.
