Gun Thread: Day After Christmas Edition!

snoopy after christmas scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

So! It's the day after Christmas, or as our Canadian and UK friends call it, Boxing Day. Gotta say, given a choice betwixt Christmas and Boxing Day, Weasel is going with Christmas every time. Anyhoo, if you're joining us from somewhere where Boxing Day is a thing, I hope you had lots of fun on your, um, holiday. For the rest of us, how was your Christmas? Get any cool gun and shooting stuff? Did you give any cool gun and shooting stuff? Giving is never as much fun as receiving, but some people like it. Or so I've heard.

With that, let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Homework Review
Last week we had a little homework assignment to complete for this week. In case you missed it, here 'tis:

Math? I Was Told There Would Be No Math!!

122621 sliderule scaled.jpg

You were lied to. There will be math.

So this week I have an assignment for you. A homework problem to study over Christmas break, if you will. I have always said shooting is mostly a big math problem, and this will give you an idea what I am talking about.

The assignment is to watch the video and come prepared next week to discuss how you would apply the covered concepts to shooting. This might be a tough one because you have to think a little beyond the material as presented and apply the concepts to certain shooting situations.

Here are the questions I'd like you to answer:
- Which of the concepts presented are relevant to shooting?
- What shooting problem can you solve using the concept?
- How would you apply the concept to solve the problem?

Good luck!

Did you watch the video? Hmmm? Anyone have any ideas? I'll wait an hour or so for discussion and then will post the answers here around 8pm eastern time.

***

And here are the answers!
Cosine! The cosine of an angle is your friend when computing high-angle firing solutions! The same methodology used in the video to approximate the Newtons of force apportioned to the X and Y axis of a right triangle can be used to estimate distance expressed in yards or meters or cubits or whatever. If the hypotenuse of a right angle represents the straight line distance to a target, the opposite side then represents the gravity distance for the shot, or the distance where gravity is affecting the flight of the bullet.

high angle shooting graphic scaled.jpg

Considerations for High-Angle Shooting
When shooting at an angle greater than about 10 - 15 degrees, you must correct the firing solution for the difference between the straight line range to target and the gravity distance to target. Uncorrected, high angle shots will always impact high whether shooting uphill or downhill. This is because the gravity distance in an angled shot will always be less than the sight distance.

Using an Angle/Cosine Indicator or ACI
Angle/Cosine indicators (example HERE) work when mounted next to the riflescope, by indicating the angle and/or cosine of the angle by means of a level and index marks. The shooter then multiplies the cosine as an adjustment to the straight line distance firing solution for an adjusted gravity distance solution, in MOA or Mils.

Other, and arguably more accurate, options exist for correcting a firing solution for angled shots; for example, input the observed angle into a ballistic computer or use a prepared slope chart. I am generally not a big fan of relying on electronics in computing firing solutions, but they sometimes do have their place. The angle cosine methodology is not perfect at very high angles (beyond about 60 degrees) or very long distances (beyond several hundred yards), but does provide a reliable estimate and field expedient solution.

It's a Joyous Christmas Miracle!
Welp, the whole dang WeaselFamily piled into the truck on Thursday for the 5 hour drive from Northern Virginia to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, arriving in record bad time some 26 hours later. What happened? A flat tire a couple hours into the trip happened. Although typically not a show-stopper, apparently King Kong had put the lug nuts on the wheel and I couldn't get them loose. Helpful VDOT Roadside Assistance Guy #1 couldn't get them loose either. AAA guy couldn't get them loose, and neither could VDOT Roadside Assistance Guy #2, but he was driving a tow truck and did manage to tow us from the shoulder of the interstate in a bad area into a much worse really seriously bad, depths of Hell section of the 'hood, in Newport News. Fortunately, the amazingly helpful and cool Virginia State Trooper who had stopped on the side of the road originally came back when called and we had a very nice chat waiting for a tow truck to take us to a repair shop. Long story short, we ended up staying the night at a hotel in a much better neighborhood, the truck was fixed the next morning, and we made it to our destination late but safe and sound. Christmas adventure: check!

Q: Weasel, why are you telling us your stupid Christmas story?
A: Calm yourself! I'm getting to it!

So we have talked before about how to handle a police stop when carrying, and it was interesting how this played out. I was in the driver's seat getting ready to call AAA when the State Trooper rolled up so I had my driver's license and concealed weapons permit ready as he approached the door. When he saw them in my hand he said he didn't need to look at them. Huh? So much for my often rehearsed little opening statement about being a CWP holder and being armed. Weasel wuz robbed!

Later, as we were waiting in the 'hood, the Trooper very candidly mentioned how we had gone from a bad neighborhood to worse, and that he'd hang out with us until the tow truck came. Knowing my CWP status was linked to the truck's plates, I acknowledged that I was armed but didn't want get into a gunfight right before Christmas in front of WeaselWoman, WD and FSJ. His response? He laughed and said he'd be surprised if anyone in the area wasn't armed! Grrrrreat. We spent the rest of the time pleasantly talking guns and ammo and shooting.

Anyhoo, here is a video from Massad Ayoob with some ideas for conducting yourself if you're stopped while carrying.

I'm guessing my experience was atypical. Although not required in Virginia, it has always been my intention to acknowledge I'm carrying to a policeman, but the circumstances in this case weren't exactly how I'd envisioned them. I've always sort of imagined that by being up-front, I might get some sort of reciprocal consideration from the cop, as Mas Ayoob even mentions in the video.

How about all y'all?

******

First up, our pal A.H. Lloyd sends us an excellent range report.

A few weeks ago I was singing the praises of the Charter Arms Undercoverette, a compact revolver that is almost exactly the same size and weight as a standard .38 Special snubbie but which is chambered in the hard-to-find .32 H&R Magnum. This generally forgotten caliber allows room for an extra chamber in the cylinder (six rounds instead of five in .3, has mild recoil and yet is ballistically superior to standard .38 Special or .380 ACP ammunition loads.

One can also fire .32 Smith and Wesson long through it, which is really mild, and I think is a great option for people with weaker grip strength or who don't like the way pocket .38s and .380s tend to jump around. Such folks might gravitate to a .22 LR or .25 ACP pistol but .32 Long has twice the energy of either, making it far more effective in the self-defense role.

Let's go look at the targets. First up, we have three targets from a quick range session a month ago. As you can see, the Taurus 85 had the best group, but I've been using it for 16 years so it's not exactly fair to compare it to something I'm still breaking in.

AHL 1 122621 38 special Taurus 85 scaled.JPG
Taurus 85 in .38 Special

Next up, we can compare .32 Magnum and .32 Long. Not bad groups, certainly satisfactory for self-defense at maximum range, but I was hitting a little low.

AHL 2 122621 32 long scaled.JPG
.32 Long

AHL 3 122621 32 mag scaled.JPG
.32 Magnum

AHL 4 122621 32 long elevation scaled.JPG
.32 Long with elevation

Like many snubbies, the Undercoverette has fixed sights, so what I needed to do was figure out the proper sight picture for this particular weapon. The next target - which was done in blustery conditions while looking nearly into the sun - looks pretty bad, but I wasn't trying to build a group, just nail down the proper elevation. Once I started to strike the red, that was good enough.

All of which is to say that but for the crippling shortage of .32 Magnum, I think I would make the switch to it.

Until then, the Undercoverette will remain a practice tool, something I can use to ease the pressure on my stocks of .38 Special. I will also use it to teach novice shooters who are ready to move up from .22 LR.

Very nice job, AHL! I am a big fan of the .38 caliber and keep hearing good things about the .32 caliber. Great report. Thank you!

Speaking of calibers, how about that wacky 9mm? There are a lot more than the trusty old 9mm Parabellum.

11 I'm self sufficient. I give AND receive.

Got some new fake walnut grips for my .45.

Got a muzzle flash hider for my carbine. and a new large cap magazine for the carbine.

I might even take some time to get that put on and ready. Cause now I think the mask deal is over here in PA. (Oh they wanted to but the Commonwealth Court said Nuh uh. So no mask mandate.)

So it may be time to GO TO THE RANGE!!! No outdoor ranges this time of year plus you have to have a license as they're all in State Forests. So It's indoors for me.

Having watched the Massad Ayood video, I notice he did a special call-out to Michigan.

Yeah, so Michigan *requires* you to disclose if you are carrying, and while some find this odd, I have always found it to be a great benefit. Basically, it writes the script for you.

Officer pulls you over, approaches your window. Officer makes banter and you announce: "I have a CPL and I am carrying."

Now the officer *already knows this* so you are proving that you are an upright citizen and someone worthy of trust.

I will add that I've disclosed even in casual encounters with police ("I should tell you that I have a CPL...") and every time, the cops have reacted with relief if not open affection.

40 Posted by: Just a side note at December 26, 2021 07:12 PM (DAevm)
A lot of cops delight in seeing how mad they can make someone without them blowing a gasket. They get their jollies off.
Best to do is ignore. Just tell them that you were doing as the law required and let it go. And complaints to the police don't do any good. Have a lawyer fill one out if it's bad enough cause the amount of grief you might rouse up is not worth it. Won't do anyone any good. You won't even feel better afterward.
Hands on the wheel, smile on your face and always say sir or maam, never raise your voice or your hands. If they they ask you stupid questions to get a rise out of you just tell them that you don't have anything more to say about it to them. (a gentle way of saying you are invoking your right to silence.)
And then stick to the silence unless it's absolutely necessary. Just keep repeating that you don't have anything to say about anything to them anymore. Works like a charm. No snark so they can't get jacked up. Not starting a discussion that can lead to dangerous topics (remember they are taught that the more you are talking the more likely you will talk your self into an arrest.

51 Merry Christmas horde. I've been to the range and maybe best Christmas ever! I tried to make it up to the range Wed. with my new 6 Creedmoor but too much snow. So I went to another range and ran a bunch of test loads over my chrono. That went so well that I went home, loaded up 50 of my new loads and rebarrelled one of my 308's to 6 Creedmoor. We had a big snow melt so I was able to make it up to the range on Christmas eve. It was 40 and blowing 20+, straight at my back. From first shot to loading up the car was less than 15 minutes, I got both rifles sighted in and shot a flawless 25 round mag out of each. Best Christmas ever!!

58 Well, I bought a Navy 1861 in .36 caliber. Finally shot it some this weekend. Like all black powder guns, it's a blast to shoot.
Cleans up MUCH nicer than the Remington '58.

59 Quick range report, Weasel ... Went this morning, and could see that I was plain worn out by all the Christmas festivities. Shot my new P2000 and continued to learn from the DAO action. Someone I know counseled me and was certainly right: DAO practice will clean up your trigger work. Good call on his part. Also shot his Glock 17L, but just couldn't pick up the front site. Too thin for again eyes, and I started searching, flexing my wrist, and doing bad things. ;-)

61 Good evening gub threaders.

My plan to go shooting in FL was foiled by time taking over things. As is it's wont.

So now just tooling along through the Southeast with a number of guns and ammo that the media might call an arsenal, but really, no more than one gun per person in the car and only 100ish rounds per gun.

I thought I had filled my gun checklist and PSA has the P365XL Tacpac for $599 and really only the fact that I don't have the money is stopping me.

63 Using the cos of the angle you are shooting is very important when shooting long range and/or steep terrain, like Afghanistan. Instead using commercial "Slope-Dopers", I took a 75 cent plastic school protractor and printed out the cos of 0-90 degrees in 5 degree increments, twice, and glued them to their relative position on the scale. I then laminated the whole thing to make it waterproof and took a length of dental floss and a weight at the end; I used a 308 projectile. All I had to do was sight down the straight end of the protractor to the target, the weighted string found the angle, then I grip the floss to keep a steady index when I took it off my eye. I now had the cos to multiply to get my adjusted range. I still used this as a back-up to my LRFs which do all the work now, but when I first joined the Corps in the late 80s, LRFs were big and clunky devices; the GVS-5 was only good for about 100 lases per battery.

Cops are actual people who want to do a job that needs to be done. If you act like a jackass, they will treat you like a jackass.

I've been pulled over *mumbles* times over the years and always get off with a warning because when I get stopped, my first priority is to make sure the officer feels safe. You can see the relief when they realize you're one of the 'good guys' and this stop is going to go quick and easy.

And yes, one of them told me that. They know that CPL holders are clean, which is a great relief to them.

After I answered in the affirmative, we preceded to discuss why my not wearing a seat belt made me a candidate for a failure to observe road conditions ticket, NOT a speeding ticket. I paid the ticket via a credit card, no court appearance nor a speeding citation on my record!

Joan Didion on Self-Respect In brief, people with self-respect exhibit a certain toughness, a kind of moral nerve; they display what was once called character, a quality which, although approved in the abstract, sometimes loses ground to other, more instantly negotiable virtues Self-respect is something that our grandparents, whether or not they had it, knew all about.

All police is local. It really is. I live in a liberal college town but I feel perfectly safe because I grew up here and know the cops.

I've been stopped many times over the years, usually because the tail light was out or something stupid, but because I treat the the officers with respect (and this absolutely includes keeping hands on the wheel, etc.) I get off with a warning because they are reasonable people who don't get off on inflicting pain for its own sake.

In one memorable incident, I got stopped for a bad turn signal light, and we ended up chatting for half an hour in a leafy neighborhood because college town and we had a lot of gossip to catch up on. No ticket.

Be nice to your local cops. They're your neighbors and don't hate you unless you make them.

91 Weasel, about those M1911 airdrop cans: I don't think that's what they're for. They're meant for long term storage of M1911 pistols "just in case" they were needed again at some point in the future. At the end of WWII and into the 1950s, Army arsenals (Springfield and Rock Island in particular, but others took part as well) overhauled or rebuilt tens of thousands of M1911 and M1911A1 pistols before storing them away in cans like these. Each can could store fifty pistols, with one magazine in the grip and one spare (as seen in the photo). Some pistols (those delivered in August and September 1945) may have gone straight into cans like these upon delivery, but most were overhauled or rebuilt. You can readily identify rebuilt 1911/M1911A1 pistols by their mismatched parts from different manufacturers and eras (functionality was the only criteria) and arsenal initials stamped on the pistols. Some of these are:
SA: Springfield Armory
RIA: Rock Island Arsenal
LAD: Letterkenny Army Depot
ANAD: Anniston Army Depot
AA: Augusta Arsenal

1982 I had JUST pulled into town, after driving my Camaro cross country, on leave, to attend a friend's wedding. First time I'd been back to my hometown for a couple of years.

Was 4 miles per hour over the limit, and red and blue lights behind... was going... COME ON... I'd just done a pretty high speed run clean across country.

Cop gets out... comes up to my window... and goes 'HI! you back for the wedding?' Was a guy I'd gone to school with.

95 Mrs. tbodie and I bought each other matching, identical 22lr semi-auto pistols for Christmas.

Went to the range to test drive them. We each shot 20 rds thru "our" pistols, then traded and shot 20 rds thru the other pistol. Long story short, I lost my pistol cause she liked it better. It really did shoot noticeably better.

Just a reminder that each gun is unique.

P.S. Now I will have to go back to range, often, to figure out "my new" 22lr. Dang the luck.

Unfortunately, you're about 55-60 years too late. So many surplus M1911 pistols came on the market in this time period that Colt sales of new commercial Government Model pistols were hugely depressed, impacting Colt's profitability. It took DOD contracts for the AR15/M16 series of rifles to bring Colt back into the black. Today, 1950s and 1960s Colt Government Models are relatively hard to come by for this reason.

Colt stupidly pulled out of the civilian market in the 1990s and relied on military contracts to survive, thereby missing the Obama bull market in civilian sales.

Now they're belatedly catching up, but mostly they are doing repops of legacy revolvers.

If those people had one ounce of sense, they'd be cranking out a modern, polymer Model 1903 in .32 ACP and piling up money in the bank.

I think Colt has stopped making more classic/legendary firearms than most other manufacturers have ever made. That said, they're not the industry powerhouse they used be 60-70 years ago. I doubt they have the capacity to make more than what they have in their lineup now. With every Python and Anaconda they can make already spoken for before they leave the factory, I'm not expecting any new product lines coming out anytime soon.

When Colt decided to abandon the civilian market in the late 90s, they were giving up all their master craftsmen, decades of skilled tradesmen. The King Cobra was an entry-level revolver with precision targeting. They threw away a century of expertise because they figured civilian arms were a dead end and military contracts were the future.

Idiots.

Colt abandoned innovation long ago. Again, women are a huge force in the gun market today, so were are the new Vest Pockets and Pocket Hammerless models using polymer and updated ergonomics?

156 99 ... "PA's flintlock only deer season starts tomorrow, but the weather report doesn't look conducive for keeping your powder dry."

While not foolproof, there are a few ways to limit rain problems with flintlocks. The easiest is to use a 'cow's knee'. That's a leather cover that ties around the lock and keeps the rain out, at least in theory. I've also heard of sealing the seam between the pan and the frizzen with grease.

Or just wait for the rain to stop. Nah, too simple.

Historical reference: At Guadalcanal, Gunnery Sergeant Mitchell Page (CMH recipient) used his MG platoon's M1917 machineguns (.30 caliber water cooled) to deliver accurate indirect fire on the Japanese at 1,000 yards and area denial fire on terrain features at 2,000 yards. The Brits and Aussies would concentrate an entire MG battalion of .303 Vickers machineguns (96 guns total) to do same thing on the WWI Western Front and in WWII on New Guinea and Europe. This kind of concentration would deny acres of land from enemy use.

183 Late to the thread by a bit. But I did my homework and my answer is below.
Merry Christmas to you Weasel, and happy new year, you are appreciated.
And thanks for the homework assignment. I watched the video and was amazed at how well the guy explained sine and cosine. I did not understand it well in school.
To answer your homework question, using cosine we can determine the Flat Line Distance (FLD), to a target, that is at an angle to us. Some people call this the riflemans rule.
Line of site distance x Cos (angle to target) equals Flat Line Distance (FLD)
A guy, who is part of a company Sierra Bullets, measured the accuracy of riflemans rule, improved riflemans rule, Sierras Rule. He found the improved rule better than the original, and Sierras rule, better than both. Turns out that when a bullet is fired at a target either above or below the shooter, the bullet will go high. How high depends on the inclination angle and the slant range distance.

As an alternative, Lee Precision makes a two cavity round ball mold. They usually sell at MidwayUSA for under 30 bucks. They are aluminum, not iron, but I've used them for round ball and regular bullets for decades. Lyman molds are great and have a lot of fans but cost three times as much and you have to buy the handle separately. I would rather spend the price difference for pure lead.

200 Back when I was an EM in the Arty I was trained in FDC, Fire Direction Control. Specifically I was assigned as a VCO, Vertical Control Operator, when back at my Battery.

The FO, a Lt.Diogenes type, would call in a target and I would find it on the contour map, figure the difference in elevation between the target and the guns, calculate the powder charge and gun elevation required to hit it and give that data to the guns. Sometimes that required high angle fire, for some reasons.

209 Actually...
Today is NOT Boxing Day. Boxing Day is the day *after* Christmas Sunday (The Sunday after Christmas) when that day falls on the 26th. I looked it up today.

It makes sense, because Boxing Day was the day for priests to distribute the gleanings of the poor box to the poor, and they're a little busy with Mass on that day if it's Sunday.

224 As an alternative, Lee Precision makes a two cavity round ball mold.
Posted by: JTB

Maybe if I shot at Cowboy tournaments... but I pay 8 cents a ball. I shot 6 cylinders of balls, and spent less than $3 on the lead. Can't see making my own balls.

Now, as for elevation in artillery, the difference in altitude between the guns and the target is called site. The tube needs to be aimed in both direction (deflection) and elevation (quadrant). It is measured in mils. More geometry. :-)

233 I got cleaning mats for Christmas. TWO of them. Both with the 'splodey diagrams of 1911s. The funny part is they came from 2 different people... AND I already had one. Heh.

I had gotten my son a non-'splodey-diagram one to go with his "Put a thumb in it" shirt. (I couldn't find one of his gun; hard to find specific ones for anything that isn't a Glock or a 1911, it seems.) So Tekmats all around!

Santa didn't bring me a 1911 .45 5". But I know he's kinda busy and stuff. So I'll just have to buy my own.
And all the other gubs on my list.

And I keep bugging my spouse about getting off her duff and getting to the women's gun meetings here. Now that she has her CCP *and* a gun, she doesn't have an excuse, dagnabit.

236 Hello! Back in the Free State of Arizona! Woot! Sorry, just got in the door, and, well, the dog ate my youtube homework.

Range bag report: I received and installed a new gun safe and, during the process, decided to pull out the range bag and see what, exactly, I had inside it. Well, yes, I had the essentials, basic scratch and dent repair, hearing protection, etc., but, what really threw me was the roughly 64 rounds of 30.06 in the bottom of the bag. Along with misc stuff that wasn't really needed.

Needless to say, range bag was cleaned out, and, unsurprisingly, lost a bit of weight. Life is good.

288 Another thing, if there is no safe haven or emergency lane to pull of, put your flashers on and wave out the window to let the officer know that you see him and are looking for a safe place to pull off.

Where I live, on some roads, you might have to drive a couple of miles to find a place to pull over.

293 I've no doubt you're a competent man Weasel, but I've got to ask; did you stand on the lug wrench? Standing and bouncing will exert nearly 400 lb ft* so unless you have a ten lug truck, that should break em free.

I had too tight lug nuts on wheels but luckily, I was home. My impact wrench, even dialed up to '11' didn't budge them - even, as you suggested, standing on the breaker bar didn't help. Too bad. The pre-war Colt finishes (blue or nickel) are arguably the apex of the gunsmithing art in the US. Unfortunately, they're quite fragile and wear away quickly under hard use.
If you're willing to spend some $$, you can write or call the Colt historian's office to find out via a letter where Colt shipped the pistol. Don't forget to ask for the manufacture date. The Brits purchased practically everything Colt had in inventory in 1940-41, including over 2,000 1903s in .32 ACP. Many of these went to the SOE (Rheinhardt Heydrich's assassins used .32 ACP 1903s). If your gun was delivered to a famous/infamous someone or noteworthy organization, that will make the gun more desirable from a collecting standpoint due to provenance. Be prepared to be disappointed, since it's relatively rare for these letters to reveal a jackpot.

337 Cop attitudes toward drivers with guns depends a lot on where the stop is taking place. CCW permits aren't as common in urban areas in California. So if you live there, you're probably not going to have to tell an officer that you've got a gun at your hip if you get pulled over. However, the fact that you have a gun in the trunk of your car, in a locked case, as required by law when you transport it, *can* get the officer upset if he discovers it before you tell him. On the other hand, some officers will automatically confiscate your weapon whether or not you're legally transporting it. You're not going to win an argument with the officer about such actions. So you're forced to file a complaint to the local PD, who will eventually give you the weapon back. Though it might not be in usable condition any longer.

There was a thread that I recall on the CalGuns forum about this. The general thought was that if you think the officer is likely to go looking in your trunk (and he might if he knows you're licensed to have a weapon), then warn the officer beforehand if you're transporting a weapon. If you don't think the officer is likely to look, then keep your mouth shut.

Installation of an AR-15 aftermarket trigger almost always improves the trigger break, reset, and overall feel. In fact, the only reason to keep the "mil-spec" trigger in place is reliability. Apparently in the not so distant past, some aftermarket triggers could produce light primer strikes, occasionally resulting in malfunctions, especially with military ammunition (hard primers). Geissele sold a lot of very expensive triggers guaranteeing both improved trigger performance along with maintaining mil-spec reliability. Times have changed. Lots of triggers now offer those attributes, and at a significantly reduced price. My personal favorite is the LaRue MBT. If you prefer 2-stage triggers, you can't beat it. And they can be had for under $100.

Watched a short but enjoyable video today. They interviewed a woman who sells guns, at a store. They asked her, what is the most common brand returned. The answer? Glock. Everyone suggests Glocks, or sees them in movies etc. So then people get them, and no external safety etc. Anyway, I am not making an argument either way. Just thought it was interesting. Glocks may not be a good choice for a newbie.

356 Late to the thread, but I did get in a partial range desert day today. Went with lurker Osprey. I had loaded up my .44 Remington New Army repro with 25 grains of Pyrodex, and .454 round ball. Didn't apply the caps until we got to the desert! The .454 round ball seems a little small for the bores in the chamber. Will have to try a size larger. The little straight capper I got proved to be troublesome, and I wound up applying the caps by hand. Bottom line: it worked, seemed a little underpowered, more of a whoosh than a bang. One chamber didn't fire the first time the cap went off, but it pushed the bullet ahead about a quarter inch in the cylinder. I used the rammer to push it back, and another cap fired it OK.
I need to make me a better capping tool, and I need slightly bigger bullets. I did use Bore Butter to seal the loaded chambers, and that stuff melts too readily for my liking.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 26, 2021 11:06 PM (P3gRi)

357 Further: I also brought out the little el-Cheapo FIE single action "Old West style" .22 revolver that I rehabbed a little. I made some temporary grips for it out of laminate flooring, but they work. It fired every round I loaded, and I even hit the swinging steel target a few times. I loaded .22 birdshot first, on the theory that if the cylinder timing was a little off, I would have lead spitting out all over. That worked OK, so I switched to .22 LR. Osprey and I both shot several cylinders of that, and then I tried .22 short. I had better accuracy with that! I think with .22 LR, I was over-shooting the target. So then I tried .22 BB caps, because I had some. Big mistake; brass is so short that they cock in the cylinder once fired, and jam it from turning. I did fire all six, and got it cleared, and then fired some .22 LR, which worked fine, no damage done. Osprey brought a CZ Skorpion, a CZ boltie in .22 HMR, and a Keltec P33 in .22 LR. I really liked the boltie.

358 I had a very good Christmas present on Christmas Eve.

My house blew up and landed on me last December 18, 2020 (not recommended, trust me; a fractured pelvis, 5 broken ribs, a shattered collarbone, a broken on both sides lower jawbone, and a severe concussion/TBI with multiple brain bleeds are no fun at all). However, here I am, mostly whole; I went through things almost as bad in Desert Storm.

On Christmas Eve, my stepson came in bearing a 5-gallon bucket full of ammo that he somehow managed to extract from the wreckage of my house. That was a fine gift; we lost nearly everything else.

359 Here in Massachusetts I have only had a new LTC (for the first time in decades) for a couple of months.
The problem I'm running into is finding handguns, I have one SW 9mm but I'm having trouble finding that next one intended for the nightstand.
Oh, I can find the model with the features I want; but every actual weapon turns out to be NOT Mass compliant when I trek down to the gun store to order.
That along with the cost of ammo and the lack of local ranges still taking in new members has slowed my progress in becoming fully capable at the level I used to be.
When I can I take a 160 mile round trip to the only open or public range near me. With Biden gas prices, it stings.
