Another Key Inflation Measure Hits Highest Mark Since 1982

Again, the highest level since the very, very bad year of 1982, when Paul Volker (IIRC -- might be way wrong) jacked up interest rates into the double digits (IIRC) to wring Jimmy Carter's inflation out of the economy.

It worked -- by 1984, the economy was soaring.

But 1982 was miserable.

And I don't think Brandon is working on some clever plan to get rid of the inflation in a year.

So here we are again.

Let's go Brandon.

Annual inflation is running at the hottest pace in nearly four decades as widespread supply disruptions, extraordinarily high consumer demand and worker shortages fuel rapidly rising price increases.

Prices soared by 5.7% in the year through November, according to the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index data released Thursday morning. That topped the previous month's rate of 5%, becoming the fastest pace increase since February 1982, when the gauge hit 6.17%.

...

In the one-month period between October and November, prices jumped 0.6% (0.5% when excluding food and energy costs).

More from the NYT. This is the Fed's "preferred" measure of inflation.

Federal Reserve policymakers are finishing a year that has been colored by surprisingly high inflation with yet another piece of bad news: The price measure they follow most closely last month touched its highest level since 1982.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, which is the one the Fed officially targets when it aims for 2 percent annual inflation on average over time, climbed 5.7 percent in November from a year earlier.

Part of the jump owed to gasoline prices -- they were up sharply in November but have moderated this month -- but a so-called "core" index that strips out food and fuel prices also increased sharply, to 4.7 percent.

Rapidly rising prices are lasting longer than policymakers had hoped and have become broader in recent months, and the new data point reconfirms the pop that a more timely and related measure -- the Consumer Price Index -- had previously shown. Earlier this year, big price increases were largely reserved to goods that were in short supply as demand surged and as overtaxed shipping lines struggled to keep up. More recently, they have spread into categories like rent -- which can be more long-lasting.

Fed officials are tasked with keeping inflation moderate and setting the stage for full employment, and they have grown increasingly worried about the surge in prices. This month they pivoted on policy, speeding up their plans to cut back on economic support and preparing to raise interest rates early next year if necessary. Higher interest rates can weaken down demand for everything from homes to cars, helping to slow down the economy and restrain inflation.

And indeed, consumer spending is slowing down:

Consumer spending rose more slowly in November, raising risks of a broader economic slowdown amid the latest wave of Covid-19 cases.

U.S. consumer spending rose 0.6% last month, after climbing 1.4% in October, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Holiday shoppers snatched up gifts earlier than usual this year in anticipation of product shortages, helping to boost spending in October while contributing to a November sales slowdown, economists say.

Soaring inflation, stagnating economic activity -- stagflation, here we come.

But inflation is a Good Thing, you guys. All this means is that Karen's Peloton is being delivered late or something.

Let's Go Brandon song.

Posted by: Felix at December 23, 2021 12:21 PM (b3u1C)

A bit. That's optimistic. Assume you have $300k worth of mortgage loan at 2.5% fixed for 30 years. Your payment is $1,185.

What do you get for that same payment if rates double 5%? The same payment will carry a loan of about $220k. Those 2.5 percentage points cost you $80k in house price. And this is important, because most people don't buy houses - they buy a payment.

But mortgage rates aren't set by the Fed, they usually reflect the 10-year US Treasury note. The T is considered the "zero risk" option, so mortgages tend to float above that by some amount. If mortgages are at 5%, the 10 year note is probably at around 4% or 4.5%. And US debt service costs just more than doubled. The fact that real estate prices will crash will be the secondary concern.

89 It's bizarre that while we discuss inflation, we completely ignore the trillions in emergency spending on Covid.

It's as irrational as freaking out about a "spike" in Covid while ignoring the fact that it's cold and flu season.

it's fundamentally unserious.

I swear I am not making this up.

118 On a slight derail, I want to discuss a topic that I think we could turn into a major winning issue - Student Loan Debt. Now obviously, if you take out a loan, you're ultimately responsible for it getting paid. That's just sensible business... but what happens when you're dealing with predatory high-pressure sales tactics?

If you've been paying attention to commercials lately, there's all kinds of lawyer commercials about getting you out of your timeshare, as the predatory sales tactics and false pretenses they were sold under invalidate the sale contracts. We can come up with an issue that will interest young people, challenge the narrative, and put a dent in the Left's Education Industrial Complex.

Let's apply those precedents, as well as the Lemon Laws, to education. You have similar sales tactics already - traveling speakers visiting high schools and selling the idea that you absolutely need a degree - any degree - to succeed in today's economy. Buy now, buy today, and your rate will be locked in, today's special rate will never be lower in the future! It's really the same scam with slightly different flavor.

Imagine siccing the lawyers on Leftist Academia.

Posted by: rd at December 23, 2021 12:37 PM (Z32m1)

This is just based on where I live, semi-rural WA state but you can buy half or a quarter of a cow. Then you can pay a butcher to cut it up. Final prices is...still over what you'll pay at Safeway.

But if things get worse, it's an option.

164 Cutting gasoline costs is easy: reopen the pipelines, reopen federal lease auctions, open ANWR, and increase drilling. The announcements alone (of a return to Trump oil policy) would immediately cause oil prices to drop.

Democrats will never do these easy things, and purely for ideological reasons. Progressives require the party to be for high energy costs. It is an article of faith. So energy cost inflation is inevitable when a Democrat is in office.

167 Well inflation is the only hope the feds have to devoid outright defaults on their obligations. Probably better in their minds to pay out SSDI obligations with dollars that are 10% of former value than to admit that they cannot afford it and are going to have to means test.

Then, if you have a 401K or private pension "it was a tax" if you don't "ok here is your welfare by another name."

I'm getting old enough that I'm not looking forward to life after the great currency collapse. Having to trade labor for daily bread when of retirement age is going to suck but unless I die relatively young I expect to experience it.

175 Raising interest rates ain't gonna happen and won't work this time around anyway. 40 years ago we didn't have a zizillion in debt to service. Higher interest rates means higher payments on the debt -- payments that are practically bankrupting us already. So while the Fed might make a token increase, it won't do anything more than that.

Another point: raising interest rates after decades of crazy-low rates is not politically possible. People will revolt. Ordinary people are just as addicted to low rates as business is, and the middle class would be most effected by a substantial increase in rates. They are the ones with house, car, student, credit card, and other debt but also the ones most likely to really feel a substantial increase in payments on these loans.

The more affluent will bitch at the increases, but it won't really move the needle for them. They will be able to easily absorb the increases. Ditto for increases in things like gas.

I think we will have to live with higher inflation for the time being. It will ultimately level itself out. Hopefully.

Pomelos may also help reduce signs of premature ageing, aid in weight loss, and boost oral and dental health."

311 Paul Volker (IIRC -- might be way wrong) jacked up interest rates into the double digits (IIRC) to wring Jimmy Carter's inflation out of the economy.

We say that, but that's not quite what happens. You run interest rates up which slows new lending (because folks are hesitant to commit to higher rate loans), which in turn slows the expansion of the money supply which reduces the YoY inflation. But it doesn't undo the inflation that already happened.

Which is to say, we never saw quarter a gallon gas again.

About the only way you could reliably undo inflationary damage is to run taxes up (above government spending) without increasing spending for a while.

321 I shall propose a bill in the CA legislature that bans the state from purchasing power from out of state power sources derived from non-renewable sources.

That is absolutely bat scat insane.

The grid obviously does not run like that at all. First, we need to have a definition of "renewable" resources. Because hydro sometimes is, and sometimes isn't considered hydro. Biomass (wood chips) are sometimes called renewable.

What this doesn't do is address resiliency. For every windmill, there must be 1.1 equivalent energy gas plants behind it for leveling and backfill. That doesn't work with thermals (other than oil and non-CCGT gas fired).

When the sun goes down and the wind is fickle, and you can't use non-renewables for leveling or backfill, then you will get rolling black-outs.

Averages for hospitalization from Covid is 63 % unvaccinated to 37% vaccinated. Being vaccinated doesn't preclude you from getting infected nor from being hospitalized with severe symptoms, but it certainly appears to greatly lesson your chances of ICU admission and death.

375 I think I figured out something that's helping me time the stock market a lot better. I don't move in and out of markets or individual stocks very often. But over the last two years I've done pretty well since I started treating the major indices like your average Democrat voter. And by that I mean how they react to the news of the day, and more specifically how they overreact to the news they're being fed. This idea was crystallized last week when I saw major investment houses lowering the GDP of the country based on the failure of build back Brandon. That so-called financial professionals would really believe 1% of GDP growth could be associated with a completely wasteful spending program told me that there's nobody left who is very smart anymore on Wall Street. To sum up move in and out of the market as if Karen was at the controls. Predict her move and you can time the market pretty well. And if there is one thing we've learned, Karen is very predictable.

406 Cutting gasoline costs is easy: reopen the pipelines, reopen federal lease auctions, open ANWR, and increase drilling. The announcements alone (of a return to Trump oil policy) would immediately cause oil prices to drop.

Considering the beating oil got over the past few years because the entire economy was destroyed by the Democrats' lockdowns, there is little desire to get back into the game. Furthermore ESG is likely to kill any new thermal energy projects - that includes financing too because the banks no longer want any petroleum industry projects in their portfolios.

Except - and it's a huge exception - this assumes flat efficiency. The tendency toward efficiency is also positive, because increased efficiency increases profit in a competitive market, which is achieved by cutting prices. As efficiency increases, given stable money supply, you should expect the natural tendency in prices (although not money supply) to be *deflationary* rather than inflationary. The reason for the apparent tendency toward inflation is because of constant low-level stimulus provided by policy. There is still the potential for manias and localized inflation (like the railroad bond bubble in the late 19th century), but broad price measures would naturally decrease as efficiency increases and product diversity expands with the subsequent investment.

You could argue - weakly, but you could argue - that building dams is bad and that hydro power doesn't justify it. But existing hydro power is from dams that already exist, and thus the environmental damage such as it is has already been done. It doesn't get worse over time. In fact, you could make a *much* stronger argument that tearing down the existing dams would be enormously environmentally destructive as those areas have stabilized.

432 hat? Since when is hydro considered "non-renewable?" It is the premier source renewable electric power!

Strange but true! Vermont thinks hydro is a renewable so they buy Energy Tax Credits from Canadian hydro generation on the cheap because other New England states don't consider hydro to be renewable. Vermont then sells its common "renewable" credits to other states at going rates. Vermont, by merely defining hydro as renewables gets tax subsidies from the surrounding states by playing the arbitrage game.

Marxism-Leninism in the west has devolved over the last century into a figleaf for neofeudalism. Meanwhile the Marx-Lenin-Mao-Deng-Xi ideology in China is trucking along fairly well as an instruction set to the sort of societal/governmental continuity that the Chinese have struggled with for a loonnnng time. At least so long as you mind your own business and you're not a scapegoat group that gets chopped for spare parts.

If we're going to rebuild later we need to focus on actual history, not civics text platitudes.

443 Living in the rural areas with a septic tank and paying for it's cleanout, you become frugal with flushing the toilet (and also because you're usually on a pump and a well of unknown depth and life) you also are carerful on the amount of material you put in that sewer.

And that's only if the builder did some tests and had your septic tank and leech field built properly and nothing changed in the area to modify those requirements.

There's some dirty Bubbas with those big trucks that smile with their dirty faces all the way to the bank with their dirty money.

China is only doing so well as it is because it has a benefactor in the form of the US and Europe to sell to and invest in and steal from.

If it were just Communists (like they apparently want) it would be a constant battle (literally) for the limited amount of production.

The only reason communism in Russia lasted that long is because of the west and China is doing the same. Without capitalism, communism fails in a very short time. Reasons are myriad.

446 >>>Paul Volcker messed up. He let gold get too low from its high of 800 and produced deflation. A more measured process and declaring a gold standard as the end result would have avoided most of the negative impact. Volcker did eventually switch to keeping the gold price stable, but there was no announced gold standard.

Reagan was for it, he wanted the gold standard returned...but he asked the right question...what do we set as the price for gold?

447 A bit.

Depends on how fast the rates are raised to 5%. If it's done slowly, with pauses, then the housing market can digest it and in most markets housing values would flatten out. Done overnight, then yeah, the housing market would crash.

448 But mortgage rates aren't set by the Fed, they usually reflect the 10-year US Treasury note. The T is considered the "zero risk" option, so mortgages tend to float above that by some amount. If mortgages are at 5%, the 10 year note is probably at around 4% or 4.5%. And US debt service costs just more than doubled. The fact that real estate prices will crash will be the secondary concern.

Yup, and it will be an issue, but we're talking about a government that shuts a country down for over a year because of Covid. I'd be happy to see the same folks be forced to pay the piper instead of kicking the can down the road to the next senate or whatever.

450 Love watching me some millennials and zeds who never lived thru the Johnson-Nixon years watching speechlessly as the government steals their money via third parties. Dumbasses.
