10 Afternoon, all! I'm normally unable to join in on the Pet Thread until deep into it, but I woke up early from my nap. How are everybody's furry little pack members or slinky psychopaths? My Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is asleep *next to*, not in, his pet bed. He's been moving arthritically around, eating with enthusiasm, and purring when petted -- the usual, in other words.

21 Our cats were really good about the tree, until last night. Then Yuu finally found the tiny reflecting ornaments Littlest Kidlet had put at the bottom of the tree. I think I caught her in time.

22 Chekov has moved over near my feet. Honor demands that I climb down and sit on the floor near him, for petting (of him, not of me).

23 Went out to the woods yesterday, since I'm working today. It was snowing and we just had a great time. I can drop the lead on the young dog and just let him run. I did have to rescue him once, when the handle at the end caught on a tree.

Old dog had a seizure in the car on the way back. She hasn't had one for a month and I chalk it up to the excitement of the trip. She's fine today, although still a bit stiff. I don't know if weather conditions will allow a trip on Sunday.

24 I had a lovely Christmas Eve dinner with new friends down the street who have four dogs. Since dogs like me, who knows why, all four said hello.
Paisley was very jealous when I got home. She gave me a major sniffing.
I'm sure she was wondering if I was hanging out with that bitch down the street.

25 We had a cat that tried to sit in the Christmas tree one year. We always cut a blue spruce - the ones that have sharper needles - he didn't try that again

29 Nice Pets Y'all!...

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at December 25, 2021 03:44 PM (6FtXF)

30 Christmas tree business . . . I guess I've been lucky. Rusty, my boyhood red tabby, vanished one afternoon after we'd put up the tree in '65. We found him curled under the tree like a little furry present. He didn't bother the tree or its ornaments much.

The cats I had with Mrs. Wolfus No. 1 were pretty good about not batting at ornaments. We learned to hang the fragile ones up high where they were safer. Mrs. W No. 2 and I did the same with Arizona, the big red part-Maine Coon, and while he did try to climb the tree when he was tiny, he desisted from that the next year. Then in '86 I didn't bother with a tree, and (though I blush to admit it) haven't since, so I've had no trouble with my cats since then.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 25, 2021 03:45 PM (c6xtn)

31 My cat isn't as concerned with the tree as she is with the turkey. She's crazy for turkey. I even had to shoo her off the counter as I was prepping it to cook. Last I checked she's sitting in the kitchen with that "c'mon, what the hell, isn't it ready yet?" look on her face.

And, for the next week, any time I open the refrigerator door she will materialize as if beamed in.

33 Hello all! Porch kitty is trying to become house cat. This is caused by the fact that a neighbor, who lives a quarter of a mile away, has about 18,000 cats and one is tired of the crowd. She comes to my house to eat porch kitty food and attacks poor kitty. Pax (the assassin porch kitty) now has a cat bite infection and must take antibiotics. If those don't work she will need a small surgery to drain infection and remove the "capsule" that forms around such things.
This morning she came upstairs to say good morning to me and then came back downstairs to sit on the arm of Hubbymayhem chair to examine the Christmas tree.

35 January will mark the 1yr anniversary of Cat#1 passing. Daughter gave Mom a photo book with all the pictures she had on her phone of Cat#1. Brought a tear to our eyes. Lots of pics of all the "trophies" she'd drop on our stoop. Mice, moles, voles, snakes, birds. Miss that killer cat. The 2 we have now are pussies. Scared to get off the deck.

36 Every Christmas I think of a dog we had that ate the popcorn threaded on a string we hung without pulling the tree down. She got busted when my ma saw the piece of string hanging from her butt and had to pull it out.

37 Last Sunday for our full family Christmas gettogether, I met my nephew's new "puppy" -- all 24" to the back of him -- Tubby. [He's actually very lean BTW. German shepherd and black Lab I think though I forgot to ask with all the family stuff going on.]

He was a very good dog, not chasing grandkids' plastic Slinky even when it was being waved around or being dragged along the floor in front of his face.

Joined me on the couch for belly-rubs right away although he did some 'play' biting/chewing on my hand when I switched from belly to head and ears.

I'm going to have to get him a tug-of-war knotted rope for the next time I see him.

51 Too late for Gardening Thread: It's Christmas Day in Omaha, and I carted a pitcher of water out to my pansies because they are still very happy and blooming.

I also tried to fix a place for the outside cats to hide from the inevitable snow and subzero weather that will soon arrive. We started with one outside cat, and now are up to four. We think a couple of them actually have homes but do appreciate the extra snack. But a new one showed up a couple weeks ago and does not seem to have any place to lay up in bad weather. Hopefully, it will realize the newly arranged porch stuff is meant for him.

Chekov grew up among other cats at the Siberian breeder's. Except for his first 15 months with me, he's always had at least one of his species around. But I don't know how he'd react to another cat right now. A kitten would merely annoy him, I think. And I'm not about to handle a second senior cat. Until I see him really improve, be able to jump onto the bed or into my lap, I don't think a second feline would be a good idea.

I'm not sure I'm ready for a successor to the great black Wolf either.

He became one as soon as I started putting a couch pillow on my lap. He'd sit near me and look up, clearly expecting the pillow, and as soon as I put it down, he'd leap up and settle in. He'd leave after about 10 minutes, but then come back after about 5, as if he couldn't sit still but couldn't stay away.

Wolf was a lap cat too, but mainly on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, when he saw me sitting for a long period watching a movie or reading.

80 Miss LIida has an all-black feral cat who visits her every few days -- sits at a distance on her porch, clearly expecting her usual handout, but won't let anyone come close. It might be the same one she's been feeding for several years, but maybe not. Both have bushy tails. We theorize that my Wolf, who was an intact male before I adopted him, could well have spread some genes around back in 2009 and 2010, and some of his traits like medium-length black fur and bushy tail might still be popping up among the ferals here.

Linda says that I have some responsibility for Wolf's descendants. I say, "Cats don't have paternity suits."

81 The aptly named peekaboo cat liked to climb up in the tree and then peek out like some of those 50 pets of Christmas. She never tipped it over. I should pay the photo bucket ransom for a month or two and see if I have those pics there. I have not been good about keeping pic backups on the computer. For the most part my clumsy pics are not worth preserving but there are probably a handful I would like to have.

Cat owner tip I read somewhere. Fishing line to eye hook in the ceiling.

96 Merry Christmas, Morons and Moranimals!

We've been feeding an outdoor kitty since about March. Had seen him frequently since winter of 2019 but assumed he 'belonged' to someone nearby. Befriended him summer of 2020 but wondered then if he had a family at all-- he looked so scruffy. Early this spring, he was looking very unkempt, so began feeding. We then assumed he had been dumped and was lucky the last 2 winters were mild, plus is a good hunter. (Laughed as I watched him eating grasshoppers this summer)

He's been by every day since March/April and hangs out with us whenever we're outside; sleeps on the back porch or under our deck. Poor baby, it's going to get frigid here soon and I'm worried about leaving him outdoors.

Got him into a carrier and to the vet Thursday, scanned for 'chip'.... no chip! And he is a she! Guess we assumed male because no pregnancy or kittens, is quite large, and got plenty of scratches from fighting other cats. She HAD BEEN trying to get into the house since this summer, but is very wary now since going to vet. (She was so mellow and compliant while there!)

Wish us luck!

99 Merry Christmas to All and to all your good pets.

My little yellow fellow Charlie kitteh has had a rough couple of weeks. Something happened to his left front paw. Looked swollen. He was hobbling around for a few days, but got better. Then he had some kind of wound to his left cheek, looked like spider or small snake bite. Mostly cleared up now, a bit of hairless spot that I expect to recover.

We do apply some aid, but he mostly just got better.

I'm glad they're such awfully tough little critters.

100 Thanks, Infidel!

Her appointment for shots and bloodwork is next Wednesday. Hope I can coax her indoors before then.

103 Kitty came indoors for a few minutes just now. She ate a (very!) little, then wanted out. I put her food outside so she could get a full meal; brought it in after she finished.

Baby steps!

"Have I been eating cat poop out of the litter box? How dare you accuse me of such uncouth behavior, sir!"

This I will never understand.

Commercial cat food is high protein and, thus, so is the cat poop hence the reason many dogs will eat it.

105 Merry Christmas. Took the dog to the dog park this afternoon. It's 70s here in the Carolinas. Sat there alone for about 10 minutes, but the pooch was content to sniff around and do think whatever it is that dogs think about when they're sniffing. Then about a dozen dogs showed up one by one. A good time was had by all.
