The Morning Report - 12/20/21

commcarbcompl.jpg

Good morning, kids. Start of a new week and the last few days before Christmas. Let me begin with a quote from the great Milton Friedman:

"I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office."

While elections are now perhaps the least important aspect of how policy is enacted and enforced in topsy-turvy overthrown Amerika, every now and again they can and do throw a monkey wrench into the machine of State and the plans of those at the controls.

There's an old Appalachian Christmas tradition in which children throw their wish lists into a fireplace in hopes fairies will bring the embers to Santa Claus. [So-called quote-unquote "president"] Joe Biden may want to consider giving it a try after Senator Joe Manchin's Sunday morning announcement that he's gifting the White House a lump of West Virginia coal for Christmas: a "no" vote on the multitrillion-dollar "Build Back Better" plan. Not a year into his [so-called quote-unquote "presidency"], Biden's domestic agenda is dead.

. . .Biden's refusal to budge on the price tag of the bill means not only the demise of his domestic agenda, but the central appeal of his candidacy: that he's a moderate deal-maker who, thanks to his nearly half-century in the Senate, knows how to get things done.

Much of this was predictable. Despite beating former president Donald Trump by only 44,000 votes in three swing states that decided the election[*], Biden handed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) full control over budget legislation in a 50-50 Senate.

When moderate Democrats felt squeamish about rubber stamping the desires of an octogenarian socialist, party leadership countered with a litany of absurdities, such as labeling cash handouts to illegal immigrants "infrastructure" and promising that the largest expansion of the welfare state since President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society is actually deflationary. . .

. . . Rank-and-file Democrats with competitive races this cycle are now untethered from the failing [so-called quote-unquote "president's"] agenda. They no longer need to explain to voters how printing more money for a leftist wishlist made sense as prices continue to skyrocket in grocery stores across the country. They no longer have to explain why they voted to include massive tax cuts for the wealthy in their "human infrastructure" bill.

Who knows whether the lifeline will be enough to save vulnerable Democrats given Biden's other failures. Between the [junta's] utter failure in Afghanistan and Biden's failure to shut down [Chinese] COVID-19, the past year of Democrat leadership has been a political disaster. But with just under a year until the midterms, Manchin's bullet to the [junta's] disastrous spending bill may be just what they need to get back on track.

Yeah, he "beat"(*) Trump by 44,000 votes -- mostly by flooding a toilet in Atlanta and flooding 6 states with a few million fraudulent ballots to put him over the top, but I digress. Then again, not really. While the trajectory of this nation has been towards devolution/dissolution into a top down centralized big government bureaucracy starting around 1913, the only variable has been the speed at which that goal was achieved, never its inevitability. The closest we have ever come to slamming on the brakes and throwing it into reverse was with the election - and re-election - of Donald Trump. And by that I don't necessarily mean because of the man himself, though for sure, his reason for seeking the presidency in the first place was from a businessman's perspective (and dare I say despite his New York liberal pedigree, a patriot's perspective), in stopping the madness and destruction of big government bureaucracy.

Donald Trump represents tens of millions of Americans, perhaps at least half the country if not upwards of two thirds of the citizenry who, despite the concerted efforts to brainwash several generations of children to hate themselves, their heritage and the greatest nation that ever came into being, had woken (pun definitely intended) up to find a wolf at their throat. Too late that by hook and by crook, little by little, a distinct minority of individuals control the instrumentalities of power in and outside of government now have almost total control of society. Yet here we are, with Donald Trump ousted in a coup that installed a virtually dead corpse into the Oval Office with the slimmest of majorities in both chambers of Congress (also under the shadiest of circumstances) and ready to deal a death blow to a Constitution on life support and somehow, the wrong man stepped up and did the right thing.

Whenever I see Joe Manchin, I remember back a few years to a State of the Union address from President Trump. After Trump made a pronouncement that got a standing ovation, Manchin rose to his feet to join in the applause but within a nanosecond of being glared at by IIRC Malig-Nancy Pelosi, he sank back in his chair and sat on his hands. Not exactly a profile in courage. And yet, he just put a massive torpedo into the greatest expansion of government power since the Great Society and the New Deal, that would have completed the fundamental transformation of America into the moral equivalent of Rachel Levine with Obama's brain.

Let's face it, Joe Manchin understands full well what voting for a bill that would destroy the coal industry means; political suicide. Hence, Milton Friedman's observation of political profitability. In any case, he did the right thing despite what has to have been offers of massive payoffs by the Klain/Kalorama Klown Kouncil, if not the Yasser Arafat pistol in the hand not holding the olive branch. You know, I'm not going to be all that tough and cynical on Manchin. Recall a certain congressman from Michigan IIRC named Bart Stupak. Obama assured him over and over that he wouldn't com-- er, include abortion in the Obamacare bill and Stupak went along with it and voted for it. We all know how that turned out.

Certainly, like zombie radioactive projectile herpes, the Left will come back again and again, and do anything and everything to ram through this garbage any way they can. They don't necessarily care about elections anymore thinking or perhaps knowing that they can rig them like they did 2020. We'll see if this is true. Frankly, I'm kind of shocked Pee-Air Defecto or the Alaskan Snow Blower have not announced their intention to cross the aisle.

For now, a welcome reprieve from the next round of waterboarding.

Say, whatever happened to Bart Stupak? This (from Wiki):

Stupak chose not to seek re-election in 2010. He departed Congress in January 2011, and was succeeded by Dan Benishek, a Republican from the Upper Peninsula. Stupak is now a lobbyist with Venable LLP.

Hope he enjoys his 30 pieces of silver.

They're the same thing, essentially. The economy is among other things an expression of men in the system where they live. You cannot have a free economy without a free society. You cannot have an honest economy without an honest society. The economy is how we produce, consume and live but it is also a physical mirror of our broader philosophy.

You cannot have tyranny of the society and freedom of its production and consumption. If your system is comprised of rotters, you cannot have a lively economy. If crooks and liars, the economy cannot be honest. The two cannot be divorced, because one is the expression of the other.

Not yet it isn't. If BBB is dead - and it appears to be - that was just the planned killing stroke. They're still all-in on the 'Rona nonsense, they're still strangling the economy, they're still crippling our prospects with their energy and environmental policies, they're still stifling expression with speech controls, they're still robbing us with inflation and they're still sexually corrupting our society and using children as the increasingly popular means to do so. The coup de grace might have been stymied for the time being, but domestic agenda otherwise is full steam ahead.

Talk about missing the forest for the trees, National Pulse. The lead damn paragraph shows this to not be true:
In the next legislative session beginning January 5th, 2022, the New York Senate and Assembly could vote on a bill that would grant permissions to remove and detain cases, contacts, carriers, or anyone suspected of presenting a "significant threat to public health" and remove them from public life on an indefinite basis.

The vaccine has nothing to do with it. It's far broader and far worse than. It is apparently a "significant threat to public health." And that will mean precisely whatever the hell they want it to mean. Do you question authority? Well then you're insane and we all know that the mad are a public health risk. 90 The lapdog media didn't notice, but Russia delivered an ultimatum to the United States last week, and demanded an immediate response to it.

Not only is the United States and NATO required to guarantee that no former part of the Soviet Union be admitted to NATO in the future (i.e. the Ukraine, Georgia), but NATO cannot carry out "military activity" near Russia's borders. The Russians have made it clear that this includes all of Eastern Europe, including the Baltic States, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

There is no way NATO and the US are going to agree to this, of course, so Russia has deliberately presented an ultimatum that they know is going to be rejected.

Russia also just reduced gas shipments to Europe.

They are really and truly getting ready for military action - against Ukraine at a minimum, and perhaps other places.

Yeah, I was wondering about this months ago when we started hearing about so many vaxxed covid cases. I imagined it provided a stronger immunity, allowing for the guaranteed immunity to the spike protein the mRNA vaccine was designed for as well as any further mutations. Maybe not some kind of miracle cure, or anything, but just simply more robust resistance to further strains.

And the scientific community, at least as reported in the NYT, seemed incurious about the question. And now, in a time when the Biden administration has seen its political capital burn up in a blaze in no small part because it didn't shut down covid, it's starting to come out? 154 The long knives are out for Manchin (from HuffPo - https://tinyurl.com/4enpc42u):

"In recent months, Manchin has told several of his fellow Democrats that he thought parents would waste monthly child tax credit payments on drugs instead of providing for their children, according to two sources familiar with the senator's comments. Continuing the child tax credit for another year is a core part of the Build Back Better legislation that Democrats had hoped to pass by the end of the year. The policy has already cut child poverty by nearly 30%. Manchin's private comments shocked several senators, who saw it as an unfair assault on his own constituents and those struggling to raise children in poverty."

Considering that WV is one of the poorest states in the USA, this is a slur on him. I can't imagine that he would say that about his own constituents, especially to another senator. Biden really isn't happy with him, it seems.

I have no doubt there are and Manchin might not be a political ideologue but he's also not an idiot. His state has taken a beating with the anti-coal left's agenda and this would've been another giant torpedo to a state that is having real economic challenges.

Unless Democrats were planning on offering him a new electorate he still needs the votes of West Virginians to stay in office. And because he's not an ideologue he wasn't going to light his political career on fire for this far left agenda.

He didn't just come up with this decision yesterday, he has literally been saying NO for months but people didn't want to listen and assured everyone it was just a matter of meeting his price.

Who established the climate? His constituents, the people who put him in office and can take him out.

227 Local Classic Rock radio station sports update this morning talked about how the Red Wings will not be playing another game until after Christmas "due to COVID". Apparently the NHL has put 7 teams in "COVID protocol" due to "omicron cases" and something like 70 games have been postponed.

The NHL has shut down several teams through Christmas break because of COVID-19 concerns, including the Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames.

The NHL also resumed "daily testing" and suspends all games with "border crossings".

Then there's this: "If you test positive... there is a chance a positive test result means that you have antibodies from an infection with a virus from the same family of viruses (called coronaviruses), such as the one that causes the common cold." How many "COVID cases" are actually either common cold or seasonal influenza. Since they share almost all the same symptoms.

He's still "asking questions." It's a development and likely an important one, but it isn't a full pivot yet (the Atlantic test articles were full pivots). I'm playing wait-and-see. It's a bit contradictory at the moment, and I don't think the junta is fully aligned. Some camps are going with "COVID is over" and yet we have things like the reversal of the nationwide mandate injunction (the Kentucky decision is still active). I don't know if they're trying to ease in the transition or if there's infighting, but it certainly hasn't pivoted yet.

"Health officials also met with Biden on Thursday to discuss Omicron, with some asking the president to shift the White Houses' message of 'freedom from the virus' to publicly discus how Americans can 'live alongside' COVID-19, CNN reported.

The health officials were advising the White House to switch optics and focus on the nation's fight against severe COVID rather than everyday infection, which has been the norm for government agencies and the media since the pandemic began.

'We're getting to the point now where ... it's about severity,' Xavier Becerra, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, told reporters this week. 'It's not about cases. It's about severity. I think that's where we're heading...to try to be able to tell the public that.' "

It's not predictive at all. Manchin has been reflecting the will of his constituents (to a degree) for years now. The polls you cite simply prove that the climate was pre-existing, not that anyone actively "established" a climate. So the question remains, how do you actively establish a climate where it's politically profitable for a politician to do the right thing?

Carried farther, how do you define "the right thing"? By my estimation, the Left has this formulation down - establish (or re-establish) the definition of what "the right thing" is. What most people on this smart military blog think is The Right Thing is not shared by a significant number of voters, and certainly not by the people who control the institutions.

A more meaningful version of Milt's famous quote would be to change "the right thing" to "enact your political preferences", but then that gets into stating the obvious.

289 Took me some time to get around to watching Robert Barnes take on the 6th circuit decision, but we can expect the injunction to go back into effect this week from the Enbanc review.

I think Whig might have already mentioned this.

Earlier last week the full 6th was evenly split 8-8 with doing an Enbanc review and confirming the injunction as a matter of law. Of the 8 who opposed, 3 were abstentions who were on the panel that just issued the ruling.

Since one of those on the panel dissented, that means there are 9 judges on the 6th circuit who will vote to reinstate the injunction.

Barnes thinks we will get a ruling to reinstate the injunction before Christmas.

And the day after the new pivot, Sinema was saying that she doesn't support the procedural moves the Democrats would have to do to in order to pass it, leaving her stated support of the bill's actual aims clear.

Speaking out both sides of her mouth, she's killing the bill's new chances while providing rhetorical support to her left to help stave off any primary challenger.

330 I don't know if they're really effective against air pollution, but I can see how it could help.

If I wear a mask while moving the lawn I notice I get less allergy symptoms afterwards - so presumably it is filtering out grass dander.

You'd think the same would be true with at least some industrial pollution.

I am visiting family and went to the Episcopal church service yesterday with family. Masks, hand sanitizer upon entry, no touching when greeting others. Last week, I went to an Evangelical church with another family member, it was huge (hundreds, one of 4 services at that site), no masks, and happy people greeting each other with hugs and handshakes. What a contrast -- and I can see why the latter church is growing like crazy (more than doubled membership since covid hit). I can also see why the Left and the David Frenches of the so-called conservative press hate Evangelicals.

Start by viewing all things government - most especially the parts that enforce their will - from a default position of skepticism.

The context is Manchin and WV as an example of Milt's axiom. When we can predict behavior based on an already established pattern, that's not responsive to Milt's quote, which says "establish", not "state the plainly obvious based on existing political preferences".

In WV's case, the will against that policy already existed, so frankly it sucks as an example of Milt's axiom, because Milt's axiom frankly sucks as a useful analytical tool.

Do you have a better example?

364 The health officials were advising the White House to switch optics and focus on the nation's fight against severe COVID rather than everyday infection, which has been the norm for government agencies and the media since the pandemic began.

'We're getting to the point now where ... it's about severity,' Xavier Becerra, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, told reporters this week. 'It's not about cases. It's about severity. I think that's where we're heading... to try to be able to tell the public that.' "

Posted by: Gref at December 20, 2021 09:06 AM

"Switch optics and focus". All political theater. This all could have been over last summer (and it was over based on actual science) had there been treatment protocols put in place for everyone infected to use HCQ, Ivermectin and monoclonal antibodies. And to recommend at-home treatment/prevention with Zinc, Vit A, Vit C, Vit D3, healthy diet and lifestyle to lose weight, spend more time outdoors to get natural Vit D, etc.

None of that is happening, so this is just more political theater.

------
Politifact did some investigative reporting and discovered who Ray Epps really is and why he isn't being charged by the FBI? And all the innocent explanations for all his actions on the 5th and 6th? They refuted Revolver's reporting point by point with independently verified facts, like what reporters used to do in the days when men wore hats regularly in a masculine way (not like fey Max Boot today)?

Most of that shit is put in the vehicle not because the auto companies want to, but because we are forced to due to stupid government regulations. Such as this new one in the Infrastructure Bill:

The 2,000-page infrastructure bill, signed into law a few weeks ago, includes a mandate that newly manufactured cars keep a digital eye on their drivers - and figure out whether or not they're in any condition to drive. This certainly sounds well-intentioned, but as lamentable as drunk-driving deaths are, mandating technology that has yet to be invented raises serious practical and privacy concerns.

Section 24220 of the law, titled Advanced Impaired Driving Technology, directs the secretary of transportation to issue a rule within three years requiring advanced impaired driving technology in all new vehicles, although the rule may be delayed if the technology is not ready for implementation. Automakers have up to three years after the rule is issued to comply.

At the end of the exercise, the child was told to pretend to commit suicide, as Hitler did..

A different parent of a student who was a part of the reenactment said her son had to pretend to be on a train to a concentration camp, then act as if he were dying in a gas chamber. He also had to act as if he were shooting his peers, the parent said. The parent spoke on the condition of anonymity and declined to name the child.

474 Wow. Manchin destroyed democracy AND the planet with a single non vote.

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at December 20, 2021 09:45 AM (E8EsG)

475 >>What I find interesting and quite fun is that the size of the "stimulus" is what is driving the fractures. Had the Biden junta kept it smaller, Manchin and Synema would have voted for it and all would be well in Prog-Land.

Yea but it wouldn't have gotten by the Squad in the House. Don't forget, this bill is smaller than the one they wanted, this was their compromise.

479 Best thing is why manchin finally went public on Fox yesterday - apparently he was incredibly pissed off that Biden was publicly lying about their private talks.

Posted by: Tom Servo at December 20, 2021 09:47 AM (q3gwH)

480 The left: Why do you wingnuts think we are all a bunch of pedos

Also the left: Believe all women about sexual assault claims!

Also, Also the left: So Biden's daughter thinks he molested her. Women lie aboujt that shit all the time in their private diaries.

481 Be funny as hell if Manchin sent Chuckie an email this morning: "Hey Chuck! Guess who is NO LONGER the 'majority leader'! Merry Christmas!"

482 " you can *never* elect the "right people" - all your heroes will go corrupt sooner or later."

sure, political pressure is fine. But I think Trump, MTG, a few others show that real change is the only hope, and that only comes by electing the right rebels, not playing the enemy's long game of establishment politics. (where they throw us a few crumbs and promises).

It has been a long slide into our current state, there may be more political pressure now than ever, yet borders are more open now than ever. Rich are made richer via bailouts for the rich, more than ever. "Gradualism" I think they called it.

483 CNN has a brain dead article listing the top 10 senate seats most likely to flip in 2022. 6 of the 10 are Republican seats, which seems a bit odd with current national trends. Also, as much as I dislike him, I don't think their number 8 pick, Marco Rubio, is really at much risk.

486 I really think this is a case of Manchin doing the right thing.

As far as his political future, he's as high as he's ever going to get. He's already been governor of West Virginia, and now he's a Senator. He's never going to be President, especially if he stays a Democrat. He'd be murdered in any Democrat primary. I doubt many Republicans would welcome him, either.

The Democrats could offer him any bribe he wanted, in terms of money, media adulation, sexual favors from Hollywood starlets, anything he could ask for. But he still sticks to his guns.

487 Yes, trending toward centralized big government bureaucracy starting around 1913 with the left clearly able to do more damage when ascendant than we can fix during our turn. Which makes Trump the turning point no different than Midway, and the left's concomitant reaction in installing Biden perhaps best described as the end of the beginning. Changing the trend requires a shift in the electorate by aligning the under, working, and middle classes against the 1% to control legislation and the budget. Think vouchers instead of DOE, training/STEM instead of BAs, and short-term government employment instead of the permanent bureaucracy.
