I worked in a diner the summer after I graduated from college. There was an elderly couple who didn't tip. It was not a problem. You make enough in tips from other people who are generous that it doesn't matter.

I used to go to Carrabba's for lunch on occasion, and sometimes I'd order just a bowl of soup and a glass of water, which at the time was less than $5 while most people ordered an entree and drink for like $12-15 (I'm sure the prices are quite a lot higher now). I always tipped as if I'd ordered the $12-15 entree because I am not a dick. And I had a couple regular waiters who always wanted me in their section, too.

Also, I tip in cash because the server may want to buy smokes on the way home AND if you tip on a credit card, most likely the employer takes the credit card merchant fee out of the tip

Not usually. Tipping is to reward them for paying attention, noting that you need drink refills, making sure everything was correct and well-prepared, etc.

yeah, I don't like the tipping system ... just pay what they deserve, then it is not a tax issue, and people don't have to worry their food will be spat on next time if they don't give a big tip. And now like 15% is just added on.
But sure, better service should be rewarded I guess ... I still don't want waiters pretending to be my "servant", kissing up ... but many of my friends seemed to really like that, and mocked me for treating the "servant class" as my equal. ... I hated them being treated as "servants". Oh well, that is "working class me" I guess.

I understand where you are coming from.
But everything is relative. For a lot of people, lower-end chain restaurants really are nice. For them, eating out normally means fast food or pizza. Something very simple and comparatively cheap.
Growing up, we seldom ate out. If we did, it was usually a place like McDonalds. We were bumpkins and of limited means.

It's not a "silly assumption" at all. It's an expected part of the meal, and has been for probably hundreds of years.
The IRS assumes that you are receiving tips, and you have to pay taxes whether you actually get the tip or not.

Sort of amusing: My late dad was a terrible tipper, even after he started making a decent wage. Later on in life, it was sort of amusing to hear him complain about some of the lousy tips he got when he was driving limo after he retired.

As I understand it, most hair salons work the same way as most taxicabs. The salon/ taxi medallion owner leases you a chair/cab for a certain amount per day, and you keep what you make above that.

Well, the black market can be very lucrative, and can buy politicians and cops. Whether individuals at the low levels are getting "rich" is not really the problem. And some higher end waiters do pretty well, and skip most of the taxes. ... Better than the average grunt perhaps doing harder work.
But the whole "service industry" and the illegals and tax avoidance ... is it directly tied to the "mob", or "just the way things work"? idk I frank a lot of beer with those folks ... mostly "good people", separate from the Wall Street crooks, for sure. Pick up food though? I rarely tip. They are handing you the food...what am I tipping for? A complicated order, or to be honest a pretty smile, does change that sometime though.

Tasty, not too overpowering but, I have to go to MT to buy it.
12 hour round trip to Missoula but well worth it.
I stocked up this summer and won't have to return until next summer.

I use to officiate quite a few ball games every year until my knees went to hell. Schools usually paid with a check and a 1099? A lot of the weekend tournaments were cash.
I reported everything but then I also kept track of mileage, clothing, shoes, etc.
The gal at Applebees should shut her fucking pie hole. She got a tip. Maybe not as much as she wanted. But still a tip. She should work on her manners and get of Tik Tok.

Wait staff are required to report their tips to their employer. The amount is on the W2. No one likely reports actual amounts received. The IRS can adjust the tips received amount to the POS recorded amount or 8% of food actually served. With possible exceptions for very high budget establishments that they suspect are under reporting they won't waste audit dollars on a wait person. If they think tips are being under reported they will go after the employer. Bigger pockets and opportunities for penalty dollars. The IRS is very cost conscious in regards to audits.

A long time ago 10% was the norm. That was decades ago. Then it went to 15%. Now a lot of people think it should be 20 or 25%. I tend to tip high because I don't eat at restaurants that are terribly expensive, and I'm only paying for myself. My restaurant bills aren't tremendously expensive.

I occasionally don't tip at all - when I was treated awfully or (as happened once, at a *buffet*) say the waitress pre-adds an 18% tip on the ticket (there were 3 of us - not one of those "large parties" or anything). She got nothing.
Otherwise, I tip in accordance with service - and most service is good enough to get ~15-20%.

I never had a client who could pay me enough to sacrifice my integrity. Always made clear to my clients that I was responsible for any errors or omissions based on the information they gave me but they were responsible for what was reported on their return. That's also the IRS's attitude. I fired a client who omitted some pertinent income that I was aware of. I took a $6k a year hit for that one. I told him he was lucky I didn't look him up at the bar he drank at and kick his ass. I also took the opportunity to make sure the CPA who took him on knew why I got rid of him.

One of the reasons I never played the partnership game. That and the politics. There are also a fair number of CPA's who are dumb as a box of rocks. Financial reporting and actually using information to successfully manage an organization are different animals. I spent more of my career on the private side of the ledger.

We were once on a road trip, and stopped at a family restaurant. the lady who took care of us was clearly tired and a little fed up, but she was still very pleasant. CBD's point on 'cheating' on taxes, and the whole discussion, derives from bad law, as many problems do.
First, income tax itself is the root problem (see quote above from Will Rogers). Second is the government getting up in businesses' business by mandating wages and presuming tips. Do away with those two things, problem mooted.

They all just care if the numbers line up and don't flag any routine to kick the taxes out for review.
The workers that input don't care, the computer doesn't care, the auditors that do a second look if there is a flag don't care about you, just the numbers.
Their managers and department heads don't actually care, and neither does your legislators, they just want the numbers to line up.
If you call a phone agent they just want you off the line within 5 minutes because that is what the phone system software is set as their optimal talk time, they don't want complicated answers, because that requires more documentation and they only get three minutes to input it. If you owe they want you to pay, if you are due a refund they want you to go away "and be patient" until they have to do something to find out what happened to it.
they only care about cheating if they can find it.

Good thing the boat was in port at Pearl Harbor (1972) for a routine maintenance workup. 'Cause he had one helluva heart attack while ashore there. They saved him there, and eventually medivaced him to Walter Reed in D.C. Nearly a year there as an inpatient, as they did surgical repairs to his nearly destroyed heart.
He passed at age 78 after a 2nd career at Litton Laser Systems, a major defense contractor. Retired as their Senior Prototype Test Engineer. Not bad for a South Carolina kid who started his USN journey as a High School Dropout. Anyone disparaging "boomers", deserves a "boomer" of a kick in the balls, right back at 'em.

Okay boomer refers to okay baby boomers which is a common insult among particularly Gen Z. In essence, they blame a lot of current US problems on the Baby Boom generation and its misdeeds.
Cost of college related to the 1960's is one such sore point, another is jobs available, another is that people paying into social security today are unlikely to even receive their contributions, let alone more. That again is blamed on baby boomers who have a positive net flow from Social Security on average.

Nah, it's a two step process. The program that rips the blu ray creates a roughly 50 GB file, then, I have to process that output through Handbrake to get it down to a mere 3 or 4 GB. Still using a 3.5TiB volume for the media server, though.

I really like Handbrake for standard DVD's. I decided to see what happens when I render them HQ 1080p. Yeah, that takes a while. But, from what I can tell, it does make a difference.
MakeMKV is the disk hog. But, it rips disks Handbrake can't handle. I might add, I run Ubuntu, so, it makes doing various things like ripping DVD's interesting.

I can't speak for the entire state, but my little corner of Arkansas, the only mandatory masking is in the hospital and clinics. And they only kept the schools shut down for that initial two weeks to stop the curve.
You see some people wearing masks, mostly old folks and people I assume retired down here from up north.
We had plenty of the Chinese virus here, but no one freaked out about it. We kept our old folks home, and went on about our business.

Way back when, I was the IT guy for a large farming operation. The potato processor had an 8086 processor on it, and, it was controlled by a i386 computer. I about had a heart attack when I realized they only had the one computer and the 8086 could not work with anything faster. I scoured the place, and, amazingly, found a working i386 stuffed in a corner. I didn't waste any time getting it set up so it could run the sorter, should the main computer go down.

Chainsaws, eh? I just get the fella next door to help out. I can trim the loose stuff or pull it out and down but I don't like heights and I am not cutting a limb off. I used a chainsaw a few times but I usually used a big sledge with wedges to split our wood. Good workout.

My ancient Homelite Super 2 still runs like a champ. Light enough to use one-handed for limbing. I bought a brand new Stihl once; used it for a season. Was never very happy with it, and gave it to a friend. I have some vintage chainsaws, too.

My late father was a Homelite dealer for a number of years. He sold a lot of two models: the XL12, which was arguably the first mass-market homeowner saw, and one of the best ones, and the C51, which was considerably larger and more powerful, and aimed at arborists and farmers, etc. Not a real faller's saw, but pro-grade. Those saws were all metal. The little Super2 is plastic-housed, and lacks a throttle lock to aid in starting, but it does have an automatic chain oiler.

My first computer was an IBM PS/1 "multimedia computer". Had a small floppy, not the 5.25. It ran Win 3.11. I still have it, have not booted it up in years.

I got my christmas present this year. the move from hell officially ended on Dec 7, and have been in full blown party mode. A year of my life in the 9th circle of hell. It's party time.

We (I'm one of them) never had a "cause", which was anathema in the eyes of our Boomer predecessors, and meant that we were handicapped, or mentally undeveloped, or something like that, as far as they were concerned. I remember reading an article lamenting that fact (the "no cause", not the "might as well have been mentally handicapped" bit) when I was in my late teens. The Boomers had the civil rights protests and the Vietnam protests. Gen X didn't protest. And this was an horrible, horrible thing to the Boomers.
So, apparently, the Boomers set about making sure that the next generation had stuff to protest, even if the stuff in question seems awfully silly. That way, the Millennials could be seen as not mentally handicapped, and significant. Unlike those useless layabouts in Gen X who didn't spend at least a couple of years trying to burn everything down.

JIm, I have been milling up some splits off the long-dead Mulberry tree we toppled on the weekend. This is nice heavy hardwood, with some pretty grain patterns. I am making some small boards, some with book-matched grain, which might make nice gun grips, or other small projects. I am going to end up with more than I will ever use. Would you like some?

My cheap-ass Hazard Fraught table saw up and quit in the middle of ripping a long piece. Thought it was just the thermal breaker, but resetting it did nothing. I will look inside it tomorrow. I do have another table saw, though. Might be time to get it limbered up. That mulberry is slow-cutting, but the saw cuts are glassy smooth, and a little scorched.

My other saw is a Rockwell Beaver 9" saw, made in Canada, with extended wings on the table, and a 1 HP 240 volt motor. Quite similar to this pic, but on a different stand:

I think a very small amout of grinding on the arbor casting would let it swing a ten-inch blade. Good 9" blades are hard to find.
