Here is a wonderful educational video. No word if it is CBD ApprovedTM............. DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON. 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET. VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. Democratic Pennsylvania Rep. University tells students they can’t hang Christmas decorations. While children and nostalgic adults across the nation enjoy the silly, whimsical story of Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” festive college students at Emory University found themselves in trouble for their Christmas decorations under a policy that would make the Grinch snarl with a sneer. According to public reports, Emory charged the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity chapter on Dec. 3 with violating the university housing policy. Its transgression? Hanging a wreath and garlands on its front door and railings — a common tradition this time of year, but apparently banned by Emory Housing Policy 1.21.1, which allows students to “decorate for the holidays,” but requires “[s]orority lodges and fraternity / themed houses” to “request installation of exterior holiday decorations” before Nov. 1, and prohibits students from installing or removing any such “decorations” themselves. This policy applies only to displays that have “holiday” themes. My guess is there were no donuts or coffee at this party. Former Trump Adviser Michael Flynn Sues Jan. 6 Committee Over Subpoenas Former Trump adviser Michael Flynn on Dec. 21 sued the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol, seeking to block the panel from obtaining his phone records. Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, alleged in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Florida that the subpoena issued to him by the committee last month was too broad in scope and punishes him for constitutionally protected speech he engaged in as a private citizen. “Flynn has raised significant Constitutional and practical concerns that preclude his compliance with the subpoena without clarification of its scope and terms by the Select Committee,” the lawsuit states. The former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency and then-President Donald Trump’s national security adviser also alleged in the lawsuit that the congressional committee “has no authority to conduct business because it is not a duly constituted Select Committee.” I remember being young and having a young family. "The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see."
True, but the fallacy in the whole "yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus" is that it is really about whether there is One True God. We play along with Santa and the Easter bunny, so "they" want to say the belief in One True God is the same sort of "suspended disbelief", rather than a deeper insight into more spiritual truths. By the way, some people propose that the tipping tradition be replaced with better wages for servers. You know who opposes that? Servers, because they come out ahead. I don't know what it's like now, but back then servers only declared a minimal amount of their tips on their taxes, and no one can prove they made more.

I always had a problem with a tip being based on the amount of your bill. Doesn't mean I don't follow the protocol. The Waffle House waitress probably works harder than the Ruth's Chris waiter.
Posted by: Just a side note at December 22, 2021 10:21 PM (aUP71) 92
I usually do tip on the to-go orders because my observation has been that the waiter or waitress stuck at the to-go station isn't also doing tables, and they are usually busting ass running around to get people their orders.
I used to go to Carrabba's for lunch on occasion, and sometimes I'd order just a bowl of soup and a glass of water, which at the time was less than $5 while most people ordered an entree and drink for like $12-15 (I'm sure the prices are quite a lot higher now). I always tipped as if I'd ordered the $12-15 entree because I am not a dick. And I had a couple regular waiters who always wanted me in their section, too. I almost always tip pretty well. But, being able to spring for the tip is, in my mind at least, not the deciding factor if one should go out to eat. Who knows about this family's financial situation. If the waitstaff demands a set wage, perhaps they should seek employment with an outfit that pays them in that manner. Getting stiffed happens. So does 30% or more in tips sometimes.
Posted by: Tonypete at December 22, 2021 10:21 PM (mD/uy) 97
I've got no problem with ditching tips and just bumping the prices by 18-20 percent. Because that would be honest pricing, not this weird thing we have now where the price is X but everyone's obligated to pay 20% more because reasons.

Not usually. Anyone who will get out in an Alaska winter to bring me food deserves it. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at December 22, 2021 10:21 PM (bW8dp) 100
Applebees and somewhere nice don't really fit together. I've left low tips for sub-par service, but would scrimp on meal to have enough for a tip if it just a budget thing. And all those no tip posts. I used to always try to tip in cash even if paying with cc. So far as I know I never had a server try to get dough on SM based on the no tip on the receipt but these days, one wonders "is it safe" to let the server decide how much of the tip to report to Uncle Sam to snatch his 'share'

I truly hate the system where you are electronically asked for a tip. It puts you on the spot and the server immediately knows what kind of tip you are leaving. The first time I used one was at an outdoor "beer garden." I ordered two Miller Lites (yuck, but it was the cheapest thing offered). The waitress reached down, pulled out two cans, and opened the tabs. For that, I'm supposed to give 15 percent? The beer was overpriced to begin with.

Well, the black market can be very lucrative, and can buy politicians and cops. Whether individuals at the low levels are getting "rich" is not really the problem. And some higher end waiters do pretty well, and skip most of the taxes. ... Better than the average grunt perhaps doing harder work. But the whole "service industry" and the illegals and tax avoidance ... is it directly tied to the "mob", or "just the way things work"? idk I frank a lot of beer with those folks ... mostly "good people", separate from the Wall Street crooks, for sure. Oddly I've had an argument with a few girlfriends over this - if you can't afford to tip at a place, don't go there to eat. Pick up food though? I rarely tip. The IRS assumes that you are receiving tips, and you have to pay taxes whether you actually get the tip or not.
Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia Wait staff are required to report their tips to their employer. The amount is on the W2. No one likely reports actual amounts received. The IRS can adjust the tips received amount to the POS recorded amount or 8% of food actually served. With possible exceptions for very high budget establishments that they suspect are under reporting they won't waste audit dollars on a wait person. If they think tips are being under reported they will go after the employer. Bigger pockets and opportunities for penalty dollars. The IRS is very cost conscious in regards to audits. I paid not a dime in taxes from that job. And that suited me just fine. I doubt the owners reported any income to the state or feds, lol. And most likely had no licenses to operate. Fun times.

Yesterday, the evil Proud Boys evilly visited a couple of suburban Portland shopping malls, and wandered around them unmasked for a couple of hours, in complete violation of Maximum Leader Kate Brown's diktats. A few Antifa types showed up as well, since allowing the Proud Boys to gather anywhere is the step that occurs right before a Nazi takeover. One Antifa person angrily asked the mall cops why the evil Proud Boys weren't being arrested for not wearing masks. CBD's point on 'cheating' on taxes, and the whole discussion, derives from bad law, as many problems do. First, income tax itself is the root problem (see quote above from Will Rogers). Second is the government getting up in businesses' business by mandating wages and presuming tips. Do away with those two things, problem mooted. CBD, outside of a sense of following the laws, no one other than you cares about your own taxes.
They all just care if the numbers line up and don't flag any routine to kick the taxes out for review. The workers that input don't care, the computer doesn't care, the auditors that do a second look if there is a flag don't care about you, just the numbers. Their managers and department heads don't actually care, and neither does your legislators, they just want the numbers to line up. If you call a phone agent they just want you off the line within 5 minutes because that is what the phone system software is set as their optimal talk time, they don't want complicated answers, because that requires more documentation and they only get three minutes to input it. If you owe they want you to pay, if you are due a refund they want you to go away "and be patient" until they have to do something to find out what happened to it. they only care about cheating if they can find it. My late Dad's last seagoing billet in the USN, was the USS John Quincy Adams. Second in the George Washington Class of SSBN's. Polaris boat, and I frankly, have forgotten whether it served long enough to be converted to Poseidon.
Good thing the boat was in port at Pearl Harbor (1972) for a routine maintenance workup. 'Cause he had one helluva heart attack while ashore there. They saved him there, and eventually medivaced him to Walter Reed in D.C. Nearly a year there as an inpatient, as they did surgical repairs to his nearly destroyed heart. He passed at age 78 after a 2nd career at Litton Laser Systems, a major defense contractor. Retired as their Senior Prototype Test Engineer. Not bad for a South Carolina kid who started his USN journey as a High School Dropout. Anyone disparaging "boomers", deserves a "boomer" of a kick in the balls, right back at 'em. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim Okay boomer refers to okay baby boomers which is a common insult among particularly Gen Z. In essence, they blame a lot of current US problems on the Baby Boom generation and its misdeeds. Cost of college related to the 1960's is one such sore point, another is jobs available, another is that people paying into social security today are unlikely to even receive their contributions, let alone more. That again is blamed on baby boomers who have a positive net flow from Social Security on average. Posted by: whig at December 22, 2021 11:34 PM (9hXN1) 436

Back in the "before" days, when I was but the teenaged whelp teen Navy Brat, riding my bicycle to Ballast Point was not an unusual activity. Looking over at the "nest" of subs next to their tender, every now and then, one would be surrounded by heavy canvas draping, suspended from overhead cables. Kids' instructions were: just keep riding, don't stare, nothing there to see, anyway. Was told they were just painting, but "just painting" didn't need that ginormous deck crane from the tender swinging overhead, either. As to your question of what do they call an SSBN that's been converted to S.F. use? They call it "you didn't see that!, please sign the NDA, here, here and here!" The "ok boomer" thing does mystify me a bit.
And the reason is there should be a next step here. Ok millennial, the boomer just told you to stop wasting your money on frappuchinos so you can pay off your loans. Yes, I get that college was MUCH cheaper when the boomer went. Now, ask why. And no the government wasn't paying for it at all. So again, why was college so much cheaper then. And when you can answer that let's go to the next step - do you want college to be cheap again? Because it can be done - but you have to stop voting for the people you are voting for now. Meddle was released in 1971. For a band that began releasing albums in 1967 and released Division Bell (their last "real" studio album) in 1994, I still say Meddle is early Floyd. Early in their history.
Posted by: Doof Meh. I'll give it to you. I suppose one could say that Floyd's middle started with Dark Side. The timespan between albums is somewhat arbitrary; it's really the characterization of the music. The more salient point that Echoes is the entire side 2 of Meddle. ("One of These Days" kicks ass.) He sold a lot of two models: the XL12, which was arguably the first mass-market homeowner saw, and one of the best ones, and the C51, which was considerably larger and more powerful, and aimed at arborists and farmers, etc. Not a real faller's saw, but pro-grade. Those saws were all metal. The little Super2 is plastic-housed, and lacks a throttle lock to aid in starting, but it does have an automatic chain oiler. @453 Those few of us that belong to Gen X are usually lumped in with Baby Boomers, because Millennials are kinda dumb, bless their hearts. Not all of them, but a huge chunk of them.
---- We (I'm one of them) never had a "cause", which was anathema in the eyes of our Boomer predecessors, and meant that we were handicapped, or mentally undeveloped, or something like that, as far as they were concerned. I remember reading an article lamenting that fact (the "no cause", not the "might as well have been mentally handicapped" bit) when I was in my late teens. The Boomers had the civil rights protests and the Vietnam protests. Gen X didn't protest. And this was an horrible, horrible thing to the Boomers. So, apparently, the Boomers set about making sure that the next generation had stuff to protest, even if the stuff in question seems awfully silly. That way, the Millennials could be seen as not mentally handicapped, and significant. Not arguing with your thesis, but if true, I'll assure you this: ALL of those "boomers" who laid out the protestable shit for the GenX'ers, were "boomers" of the left, pure and simple. I'm going to have to search for either a Bosch contractor's saw (alloy table), or preferably, the rarer than rare Rigid pedestal saw with the Granite table. You see one of those for sale, you let me know, okay?
Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 23, 2021 01:50 AM (QzJWU) My other saw is a Rockwell Beaver 9" saw, made in Canada, with extended wings on the table, and a 1 HP 240 volt motor. Quite similar to this pic, but on a different stand: https://tinyurl.com/4rtp5fp7 I think a very small amout of grinding on the arbor casting would let it swing a ten-inch blade. Good 9" blades are hard to find. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 23, 2021 02:05 AM (P3gRi) 747
9" beaver. This 57 genders thing is getting really unappealing.
