Has-Been Former Child "Star" Who Hasn't Worked in Years Tries to Cancel Dave Chapelle

No one has ever liked Wil Wheaton, ever.

He is a professional Nerd and leftwing scold who was a minor actor on the Star Trek sequel series ages and ages ago and now exists entirely as an internet-based pseudocelebrity. He and I are up for all the same roles in movies and TV, and we each have the exact same odds of landing them.

Netflix is defying the Trans Ban on Dave Chappelle, making him the host of a comedy special.

Wil Wheaton is not only demanding that Chappelle be fired, but that any comedian appearing on this special also be #Cancelled.

After condemning Dave Chappelle’s remarks about transgender people in his most recent Netflix special, actor Wil Wheaton has apologized for his own past homophobia.
“For much of my teen years, I was embarrassingly homophobic, and it all started with that comedy special,” the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” alum wrote in a Facebook post, a reference to Eddie Murphy’s 1983 standup show “Delirious.”
In the lengthy social media post, he detailed a moment when he was young and said a slur, referencing gay men in a locker room — a room full of gay men, no less. He said he was “embarrassed” and “horrified” and still “thinks about it all the time,” offering up an apology nearly 30 years after the incident.
Then he turned to Chappelle’s comments in his controversial Netflix special “The Closer.”
“For a transgender person, those ‘jokes’ normalize hateful, ignorant, bigoted behavior towards them,” he wrote, then turning to those who defended Chappelle seemingly because he is a person of color. “And it’s all okay, because they were dehumanized by a Black man. And the disingenuous argument that it’s actually racist to hold Chapelle accountable for this? Get the f–k out of here.”

I have an incomplete observation about Wil Wheaton and social media. This observation isn't "going anywhere." Just something that I'm noticing.

Certain celebrities -- or former celebrities, or " " " celebrities " " " in Wil Wheaton's case -- jumped on Twitter early. Really low-value people like Chrissie Tiegen.

And like Jake Tapper.

Other idiots whose identity was wrapped up in being Twidiots fell in Twitter Love with these people, because they felt that if " " " celebrities " " " were wasting time on Twitter, that somehow validated their own excessive, obsessive use of Twitter.

I mean -- Wil Wheaton's a Somebody. Chrissy Teagan's a Somebody. Jake Tapper's a Somebody.

Therefore, AllahPundit must be a Somebody too, right?

It stands to reason. If you are desperate to believe it.

This partly explain the "homoerotic" devotion that some Twitter-addicted "right-wing" pundits have for Jake Tapper -- he made them feel good about spending ten hours a day on Twitter.

None of these people are anything. They're not Somebodies. They're much closer to Nobodies. They're just more Somebodies than the actual Nobodies of Twitter.

So they became Twitter "Stars." Not people who were famous for being famous, but people who were famous for... having a lot of followers on twitter.

And they fed the idea that Twitter was somehow a "Star-Making Machine," where you could "get noticed."

I mean, one retweet from Chrissy Teagan could really put you on the map!

(Which map? The map of nobodies who are nowhere and mean nothing?)

No one believes that Twitter or social media are "democratizing celebrity" any longer. It was always a deeply stupid idea.

And barely any of this "Twitter fame" extended very far away from Twitter itself.

Wil Wheaton's career, such as it is, was artificially extended by ten or twelve years just due to his posting on Twitter. Without Twitter, and without the Nerd Cred that Twitter gave him, he wouldn't have gotten those guest appearances on Big Bang Theory, for example.

And that's about all Wil Wheaton got out of his "Twitter fame." That and some low-pay hosting duties for nerd shill shows.

One million twitter followers can buy you a cup of Starbucks coffee if you also have five dollars and thirty five cents.

Twitter is fading as a force now, thankfully, and Twitter no longer elevates zero-grade non-celebrities into Twitter "Stars."

There will be no more Jake Tappers for liberal Republicans to fall in love with, thinking "Oh my gosh, we're both on Twitter, maybe we can be best friends some day! (Or maybe we can be more than best friends!)"

I'm glad that time is over.

And I'm glad that this will probably the last time I have to write about this pudgy, stupid no-account no-talent non-entity loser.

It was immediately a weird kind of pseudo-credibility. At the beginning, I remember Larry King and some other CNN person in a public competition to be the first to get a million followers. That number was the goal, and would determine which of them was better.

It doesn't matter. It never has mattered. But for some reason that follower count on Twitter (even more than the "friend" count on Facebook) was steeped with the false impression of value and worth.

To a degree I was glad he was there. It usually meant scenes with his mother, Beverly (Gates McFadden), the hottest doctor in Star Fleet history. Once he left the ship and she stayed, I didn't miss him.

This may be true, but it is because one of the odd attributes of social media at the beginning: openness. The platforms were open to all and a lot of stuff grew organically. The Twitter celebs exploited their networks to grow phenomenally and reenter people's minds. But way more than them, a lot of people got as big or bigger than these guys exclusively in those networks.

That openness, however, is now over. The platforms are fading to some degree, but they won't be replaced. The last decade has seen gigantic consolidation among infrastructure players. If someone wants to try to replace it or return to openness, they'll be stymied by the big players like Amazon and Microsoft and Google. We are in a way back to the 80s. Walled gardens and top-down control, just bigger.

I think it is very subtly different from that. It isn't to marginalize normal people so much as it is to normalize abnormal people. They built all these groups and mechanisms and invented this new ecclesiastical language to describe the deviants. This had the effect of layering precision into the description of deviance, but it had the effect of explosive growth in the number of ways one could be "other" but without reducing the "otherness" of all those narrowly-defined groups.

The application of the language of deviance to the conditions of normality is more of an effort, I think, to recast the deviant as normality rather than to recast normality as deviance.

You're exactly right that he was a Marty Stu, and that's the prime reason the character was so constantly annoying. The reason for his name (seriously) was because the show creator's full name was Eugene Wesley Roddenberry. Apparently Gene had waited his entire life to stick his own avatar into one of his shows, and he went all the way with it.

It would have been logical to kill Wesley off when Gene died in '91 - but the writers who took over ST:TNG, like Brannon Braga, were themselves too pathetically bad to even think of that one.

It was not great at the time, imo (a handful of episodes around the Borg beginning Locutus arc)- but they have not aged well. I can watch any TOS episode and be entertained, I have absolutely NO desire to see TNG. At all really.

I can only think of maybe four episodes I would rate as great:

Tapestry
That archeological one
That one where Picard lives his entire life on that planet

However, even the great ones are kind of boring. There are bits and bobs 'There are FOUR lights!' But for the most part, they never put together a great show, just a shit ton of filler.

That's why I prefer to think of ST post ST VI as a dystopia where the Federation, freed from the need to maintain a massive military, rapidly expanded in order to gobble up resources to feed the demand created by the development of replicators, and to provide an outlet for human populations who otherwise were bored and restless on core worlds. Starfleet was stretched thin trying to maintain tenuous links between Earth and the colonies, with captains spending years or decades in command, most of them far from home.

We were used to Kirk, the Alexander the Great of Star Fleet, the guy who would find a way to slash open the Gordian Knot. Picard was different. Look at "Darmok," the counterpart to ST:TOS's "Arena." We still quote from that episode.

Also: Not everything always got resolved in a happy ending in 50 minutes. Remember the story of the people who had deliberately removed gender from their society, but there were still those who had male/female feelings in secret; and one of the female people has an affair with Riker. At the end, he cannot save her from being brainwashed into being a "happy" no-gender drone, and returns to the ship, a sadder man.

I once went through a pro-tranny website's list of murders of transexuals for the year. It was supposed to prove that tranny's were targets of anti-tranny violence. What it really proved is that they tend to live really risky lifestyles and get killed by johns, dealers, customers, boyfriends and cops (when they point guns at them).

That's the reason why DS9 is best Trek. The characters are allowed to have different motives and goals. Not everyone is on Team Federation (rah rah). It also exposed the Federation as not being the utopia that was promised. I'm not saying Grimdark Edgy is great either. I think DS9 put just the right amount of cynical edge needed for the too-perfect ST universe.

There was one later episode (Force of Nature) about warp drives destroying the actual fabric of space, putting planets in danger. Obviously this is an environmental-themed episode and thus by the end, the Federation dictates that their ships cannot go past warp 5 other than in an emergency.

Of course this screws everything in-universe up and thus this warp-limit decree is never mentioned again, at least to my knowledge.

There were good stories in the first 2 years, but the production crew was still feeling their way. And yes, GR's vision was often too dull for real drama. When Michael Piller (?) created the Borg and wrote the first script with them (one of the best of any Trek), he had to fight to get it produced -- it was so unlike GR's usual vision of the show.

oh you're welcome. BTW Cal Newport's book about this is good, and he's all over YouTube doing podcasts about the low-value proposition that is social media. He's an interesting guy. He's essentially a real-life Spock. Seems very conservative/Christian though he avoids saying he's on the right because he has an ethic against being political in his public/professional life but you can totally tell.

309 TNG had some great ideas, some good episodes and moments, but was pretty terrible overall.

Q was fun. The Borg were a terrific enemy. Barclay or whoever it was using the holodeck to virtually bang all the chicks on the Enterprise was a hoot. Klingon politics with figures like Gowron were fun. The Darmok episode was dumb but still very entertaining.

But overall? Picard and Riker were wimpy metrosexuals. Data's quest to be human was dull. Troi's and Guinan were terrible characters even in concept, and would be utterly loathed but for Wesley's much higher loathsomeness quotient. La Forge, like most of the other men on the show, desperately needed to use the replicator to brew up some testosterone supplements. Worf might be the only exception in that regard, but he was like an adopted shelter dog who kept eating the furniture.

One of the reasons why DS9 was one of (if not the best) Star Trek outings. They allowed the characters to gamble at quarks, use currency, fight a war using morally questionable means and showed some of the dark side of the inner-core federation.

I think I remember reading that the writers (or producers) had a bust of Roddenberry in their office, and they would avert its eyes, or turn the bust around when they wrote things that they knew he would disapprove of.

But it made DS9 more gritty and real than the rest of the Star Trek utopian vision.

Another point: how many times can you think of filler in TOS where you were like 'I can go grab a drink and not miss anything'. Not many. TNG was 95% filler. They even make fun of it themselves. Barclay or that late episode with the lower decks rejects.

It was new a and different formulation of sitcom, with quirky characters that people in science and engineering could appreciate. And the jokes, if you got them, weren't the same, tired material, for the most part. And, at least initially, they steered pretty clear of politics and preaching. Then they started in with the relationship garbage to reach a broader audience and pretty much killed the shtick. It lazily became all about "ooh, who's going to get together this week?".

You guys are also missing another point: WHAT MADE THE BORG A GOOD VILLAIN WAS THAT THEY WERE UNEMOTIONAL, RELENTLESS, FACELESS AND IMPLACCABLE. They were commies/bureaucrats, essentially. Once you start to take that away, they lose all flavor.

I've long believed that Ferengi were created because the humans in the universe were so darn boring. It's why they used the Klingons so much too. Humans in the STNG universe had zero real motivations to do anything. It would have been a really boring universe without other races to add some human motivation.

I kinda disagree, what I've seen is the first season is usually trash bc they have "big ideas" that "aren't fleshed out" and then they hit their stride.

So...Parks and Rec Season 1 was supposed to be about Pohler but that sucked so they retooled.

Obv TNG season 1 was trash.

And the Office Season 1 was garbage lifted from the woefully awful british show (like episode 1 firing Pam for a joke).

and then again, I think Friends S1 was pretty good and gathered steam..Community was perfect from the beginning. and that's all the TV i've seen.

ST: Picard established that replicators use "omniprotein" and that different types have different effects on the quality of the food. Additionally, it was long established that replicators created approximations at best and had to be tweaked.

My theory is that for food, replicators work by basically "printing" out the item using a few basic templated patterns. For example, a chicken breast might consist of a segment of cooked meat repeated multiple times into the shape of a chicken breast. An apple would consist of patterns for the flesh, skin, etc. This saves computing power and memory space. High end replicators can get close, but are still imperfect substitutions. Low end public replicators might provide a basic menu of "gruel."

Women's sports for me are basically like watching high school sports, whether boys or girls. Compared to professional men's sports, they're all slower and less skilled. Which is fine. I go into watching those sports knowing that's what it is.

What is annoying is the claim that women's professional sports are just as good as men's professional sports. And that they "deserve" the same acclaim and the same pay for a much worse product. You don't pay the same professional pay for a product that is at the level of high school sports. If women's sports were the same level as men's sports, there would be no need for women's sports. Because they'd all be competing in the existing sports leagues.

Wine is a mixture of chemicals. Once you know what chemicals are present, and in what concentrations, all you need are those chemicals to "replicate it."

Even if it's something very very suble, only a few ppm...if your original source was properly analyzed and recorded, making unlimited quantities would be easy.

Thinking of a replicator as some sort of next-level 3D printer that works on a molecular level and has all base elements available as raw materials - the wine inside the bottle would be the easiest part to make. Far easier than the bottle itself, or the cork.

Assuming these games are made accurately, where the players represented in-game have the same general performance as their real-world counterparts (skating speed, ability to change direction, shot power, liklihood of making a shot, liklihood of blocking a puck, etc...), then this is going to be a disaster.

I rather liked Wil Wheaton in "Stand By Me". The writers for "Star Trek: the Next Generation" didn't know what to do with most of their characters.

He's actually appeared as an actor in 110 separate screen productions since 1994. That includes 19 films, six made-for-television films, 49 television series, three miniseries, and 33 other sorts of production. He's appeared in that time in about 170 episodes of conventional television series and mini-series, and that doesn't count his appearances in new media like podcasts, video games, &c.

Don't care for his politics and have hardly seen him in anything in > 25 years, but people do pay him to perform. He's had a mess of credits just this year.
