The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Eric Zemmour is a French journalist and pundit who captured the attention of the French body politic by announcing his candidacy for president with a bang...simply reading a famous speech by Charles De Gaulle.

Eric Zemmour, Superstar

My dear Countrymen -- For years, the same feeling has swept you along, oppressed you, shamed you: a strange and penetrating feeling of dispossession. You walk down the streets in your towns, and you don't recognize them.

You look at your screens and they speak to you in a language that is strange, and in the end foreign. You turn your eyes and ears to advertisements, TV series, football matches, films, live performances, songs, and the schoolbooks of your children.

You take the subways and trains. You go to train stations and airports. You wait for your sons and your daughters outside their school. You take your mother to the emergency room. You stand in line at the post office or the employment agency. You wait at a police station or a courthouse. And you have the impression that you are no longer in a country that you know.

It's well worth a read, mostly because the media will portray it as a xenophobic, racist, classist, sexist, anti-Semitic rant against the modern world.

But it isn't. Recognizing that the glories of France are being subsumed into a chaotic mix of the rest of the world is not hatred of the foreign...it is a recognition that the accomplishments of a significant culture are worth preserving. Zemmour is blunt, and he is a firm adherent of the classically French snobbery about their culture and their country. It is easy to fall into the lazy assumption that he hates, but the reality is a bit more complex. For instance, he has been accused of anti-Semitism by some of the leaders of French Jewry, but that is laughable, since his entire political philosophy is based on the glory of France rather than the glorification of its many ethnic groups.

Even Daniel Pipes -- who is a fine example of an academic mind without much common sense -- understands Zemmour's importance.

What to Make of Éric Zemmour?

What to make of Éric Zemmour, the just-declared candidate for president in France in 2022?

His last name in Arabic means, perhaps suitably for an intellectual, honking, as what geese and car horns do.* His parents fled Algeria and he openly identifies as a Jew but presents himself as the representative of traditional Catholic Deep France and the scourge of immigrants and Islam. He adopts positions on Jewish issues so extreme that France's Chief Rabbi Haim Korsia called him an antisemite. He's been twice found guilty of hate speech and wears these condemnations proudly. His anti-feminist positions are antediluvian. He's pro-Russian and anti-American.

* Dec. 2, 2021 addenda: (1) Two readers inform me that the name زمور is actually Berber and means olive tree.

But Pipes goes on to say:
Despite my many criticisms, large and small, of Zemmour, I would vote for him were I a French citizen. That's because he grasps an essential truth, that France faces a scourge from immigration, that the country needs more babies, and that the elements which made France great are in peril of being overwhelmed by alien cultures. He speaks these realities eloquently and fearlessly, hoping thereby to revive a country that otherwise is heading toward a self-imposed crisis.

I doubt he will win, but the fact that his message is being taken seriously, or at the very least being reported far and wide, is a testament to the pent-up demand for love of country, for patriotism, for pride in culture.

It is long past time when the glory of Western culture is taken seriously rather than constantly denigrated as an anachronism in the modern world. It is odd that all other cultures are celebrated, but the most successful one; the one that has brought the world most of its wonders, is mocked and minimized and demonized.

Thomas Hobbes described the natural state of mankind as, "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." Western culture, in which France had a significant role, banished that life. It is by no means guaranteed that it will not return, and Zemmour understands that very well.

Because that culture made those mockers, demonizers and minimizers rich and comfortable - and resentful. They're not worthy of their station and could never have achieved it. The know, deep in their bones, that they are not good enough for their legacy. They lash out and destroy that legacy instead.

There is true and capable evil among their ranks, but so very many of them are defined by the petulance of the unworthy.

19 I understand his anti-American position. He is opposed to the leftist politics, the social justice crap, sexual militancy and degenerate culture.

The Russians (whom I loathe) have voiced support for tradition and traditional values. Just think back when Obama tried to shove gay politics down Putin's throat at the Olympics. French conservatives took note as to who was traditional and who was degenerate.

In fact, a lot of the illegal immigration issues and support of criminalized neighborhoods can be directly tied to the BLM agenda and the Democrat party narrative.

Not saying I agree with Zemmour -- just saying I understand why he is saying it and getting support.

I'm sorry, but this is entirely backwards. They fully believe that these "stations" are entirely arbitrary and constructs of a racist, sexist totalitarianism, and if it were a truly equal world, they'd be on top. Just watch any modern Hollywood movie with "strong, capable women." The overlying trope is that these people are inherently perfect, and the only reason they aren't on top of the world is that the "system" is keeping them down.

Of course they think they can just steal the infrastructure of other, more advanced civilizations and then steer them towards "equity," but we have already seen what happens when towns run by "diversity and inclusion" try to run a sanitation system.

The residue of the French Army held the perimeter at Dunkirk to allow the British Expeditionary force to escape across the channel.
Those that survived spend years behind the wire as POW's.
They were plenty brave when properly led.

If you want a little insight into this, watch "Paths of Glory", which is, of course, about WWI. But it illustrates the terrible class divisions in French society and why the French Army was so badly led in the opening days of WWII. And why they were sometimes very badly led in WWI.

The Romans thought their civilization would not backslide and humanity learned otherwise. Greeks probably thought similarly. The Chinese also, I imagine.

So, Zemmour is right in at least one thing: we must fight to keep the lights on. Civilization is all too easy to lose.

77 She's definitely a spoiler. She was one of Sarkozy's lieutenants, and did what she could to kneecap Le Pen. If it brings France rightwards, that's a good thing, but definitely look at what is done behind the scenes to sideline Zemmour. The establishment definitely does not want him to win.

I have been told by French people that I know that the Le Pens (father and daughter) are just clowning around, and have no real plans as to how they would govern.

The French and Europeans in general have been so conditioned to the welfare state (as we are now), that they cannot imagine another way of life.

84 It is long past time when the glory of Western culture is taken seriously rather than constantly denigrated as an anachronism in the modern world. It is odd that all other cultures are celebrated, but the most successful one; the one that has brought the world most of its wonders, is mocked and minimized and demonized.

This. A thousand times this.

Western civilization and the Catholic Church have done more to raise the world of of slavery, desolation, want and hopelessness than any other false creed, 'honor' culture or mud-sluiced gutter empire in the history of mankind.

A culture that has produced Bach, Shakespeare, Goya, von Stroheim and dozens of others is one to be celebrated, treasured and passed down as an honored inheritance, not tossed away for the godless detritus of drag shows, mincing soybois, testosterone-jacked shrews, state-sponsored propaganda and barely literate 'art' that sees no greater glory than its own shit-spattered asshole.

That would involve shame, which 10 seconds traversing a random Twitter or Tiktok account would remove any pretensions.

They fully believe in the moral arc of "progress;" the Darwinian evolutionary process where they believe themselves the apex of civilization simply because they exist in CURRENT YEAR. And they fully believe that their politicians are there to drive them forward into an even better world, if only anything resembling traditional values would go the way of the dodo.

It's best not to try and divine their "unconscious motivators" and simply listen to what they're actually saying. It's solipsism all the way down, and people like us are simply in the way of making their grand dreams a reality.

98 Compare and contrast the government's advice to the public on an epidemic from 1918 and today. The Spanish Flu was several magnitudes more deadly and dangerous than the Wuhan Flu, and it seemed to attack the young and healthy even more than sickly people. But here was what the federal government of the US advised then:

Influenza is caused by a germ, the influenza bacillus, which lives but a short time outside of the body. Fresh air and sunshine kill the germ in a few minutes.

Protect yourself from infection, keep well, and do not get hysterical over the epidemic. You can do much to lessen the danger to yourself by keeping in good physical condition. Eat simple, nourishing food and drink plenty of water. Avoid constipation. Secure at least seven hours of sleep. Avoid physical fatigue.

For the protection of others, if you are really sick stay at home and remain there until the fever is over. A day in bed at the beginning may also save you from serious consequences later on.

Fight the disease rationally and do not become unduly alarmed.

It's becoming apparent no form of organized resistance to this government will be permitted. Big Tech has taken the lead to prohibit any and all organization by people and groups it deems as "problematic." The latest Twitter purge is an example of this. Facebook and Google also participate in this behavior.

It's highly unlikely the civilian population in this country will be able to mount a "Solidarity" type movement as the Poles did decades ago unless we forego the use of technology and do it the old fashioned way. Even using snail mail is a risk now, so the only solution is in-person meetings at undisclosed locations.

Usually I would be very leery of anyone who mysteriously starts receiving praise from the "conservative" media, especially the total fakes at The American Conservative, but I generally think Claremont has their finger on the pulse. Claremont's honesty also leads them to admit it right in the article: he has no experience, no -obvious- source of funding (which usually translates to "shady globalists"), and no political allies. Especially among the National Front, who he would need to make his anti-inmigration pose remotely convincing.

Given how Zenmour's magically increased profile resembles Macron's meteoric rise, I'm surprised you are so quick to believe in him.

The second part... well, what can I say? It's the right play.

If I put myself in the position of someone who wants to save his country from the elitist globalism devouring it - then I need to take an immediate and forceful position opposing the United States and all it stands for.

If I put myself in the position of an erstwhile American ally, then I also need to immediately realign my country's economic and security policy away from dependence on the United States.

The first part is dumb. If he ever achieves power, I can assure him that he will find my cousins in Russia to be a bad friend. They certainly have no abiding love or respect for la belle France. The smarter play would be to realign with the other SMR states in Eastern Europe, but that would necessitate a chilly relationship with the Russians. Tough call. But the Russians can't be trusted further than they can be kicked.

I found a pirated version and was watching the game when a commercial came on for a "non-profit" asking for donations for cancer research. Actually - by demonstrating the DOJ has little actual influence - it is making resistance to all things federal much easier. This used to just be sanctuary leftist enclaves on immigration type of thing, an area the feds actually have authority on; and now red states are taking on the feds over everything, and winning.

The stock market is now so divorced from economic reality and so skewed by funny money from "Make it rain!" from the Fed I am past trusting anything on the economy.

Here is the one inarguable truth economically, our leadership class is knowingly hamstrnging the competitiveness of the American people by fucking up our energy sector in the name of Goreon Warming and incentivizing the flight of industry to China by backing things like the drive-by for 15.

There is not a happy ending here.

253 From what I understand both the "left" and the "right" in Europe are far along the authoritarian scale, making European "right-wing" quite a bit different from American "right-wing".

What too many people (both here and there) seem to miss is that trying to make villains out of what are normally healthy human concerns isn't going to make those concerns go away.

267 I worked for a French company for 5 years overseas. Spent a lot of time in France. This was back in the late 1970s. The company was great. We had 6 weeks vacation a year and they paid for expats trip home. They paid for all Medical care, 100%. They paid a percent of your salary into a profit sharing account, all their money.

They were, outwardly, a snooty bunch but a lot of fun when you got to know them. I give the French a lot credit for the Enlightenment but also ,alas, for Postmodernism. Would live there.
