As famines go, this must be a minor one. They're only eating a horse and not their children.
In Robert Conquest's book Harvest of Sorrows, which is about the Holodomor (Stalin's murder of up to 8 million Ukrainians through man-made famine in 1932), there is a picture of a peasant couple standing before all that remains of two of their children - their heads. The rest the couple ate. One of the most profoundly sad books I've ever read. The French do what they do to be contrary.
I think it's from Caesar kicking their Azz way back when. Ever since they just refuse to get along with anyone. Well except for the Muslims. They seem to like Muslims. They've been their buddies since way back. Which is strange given that Charles Martel kicked them out Aquitaine. Them and the Scotts they're another group that likes to be contrary. And at one point they were allies. That must have been fun. Posted by: jakee308 at December 08, 2021 09:44 AM (1hoTV) 95

Jeez, even the snow is ugly. There is nothing in this work that is hopeful. The only bright color is red--red of the blood and guts, and of the Commie flags in the back. For me, this creates interesting image association and foreshadowing. Real blood and death and blood and death to come. I don't know if that's what the artist intended (very likely not), but looking at it 100 years later, that's what I see.

Posted by: 18-1 at December 08, 2021 09:42 AM (ESjRY) The Italians found that they could tell where the infection was the worse by testing the sewer outfall. And yes many believe that it's not only spread by people expelling moisture from their mouth but by fecal matter that every one has on their hands. Even the compulsive wipers. It gets everywhere. Another reason why they think it spreads so fast in old folks homes. Lots of incontinence and poor hygiene cause there's just so much to keep clean. And so many expelers of same. Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded here and there, now and then are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

There was also always within the royalty a deep-seated interest in "doing something for the peasantry" without any interest in the peasantry themselves. The need for "doing something" was elevated by the elites' turn from religion and the need to validate their embrace of European modernity. The rising communists took advantage of this desire.

The booster seems to be knocking a lot more people over than the initial vaccine rounds did at my company. I don't know if this is a real phenomenon or not, as it could be that everyone is getting boosters at once whereas initial vaccination was more staggered. But man we have a lot of people out sick post-booster.

I'm thinking the earthquake in Kansas can't be over 5 because the highest recorded was 5.1 in Manhatten over a hundred years ago. Looking at the government sites I only see a magnitude of 4.3 or so for today hitting Salina but it was close to the surface, maybe that makes things more intense? Anyway, people felt their houses sway in the first hit and then felt bumps from the aftershocks. But probably not over 5.

People calling in sick for boosters might be that if you are an unperson uninjected lower caste you can never call in sick because if you do you are shunned and made to get tested and quarantined before you can go back to work again. So you never ever call in sick.
So once you are counted among the anointed injected caste you can use the shots as a pretext to take off any of the time that you weren't able to before. And if there's any additional work as a result that it can just be placed on the untouchables. Posted by: banana Dream at December 08, 2021 10:39 AM (Fq1gB) 390

We need a movie about the Flavians -- Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian. What an epic it would be, set against the backdrop of the early Empire and the building of the Colosseum.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 08, 2021 10:33 AM (txdEq) That would make a neat series, like Amazon's Medici show--which I highly recommend. Although the choice of Dustin Hoffman as Giovanni was weird. The Flavian show could flesh out the hope of Vespasian after Nero and the Year of the 4 emperors, and slowly devolve through Domitian's rule. Could get about 2 or 3 seasons out of it. Posted by: Kris at December 08, 2021 *** I wasn't thinking series; a lot of them start out on a high note, and devolve fast (the one about John Adams comes to mind). This will end when the numbers of people getting ill and dying immediately after getting their second shot becomes at such a level that everyone will know a few people it's happened to.
We're already almost there. 300 athletes over the last year got heart attacks and some died after getting their second shot. The media can't keep it quiet when the truth is right there for anyone to see. Note that we all laugh when they tell us one of their lies. Soon that's the way most everyone will be. I read about more and more everyday people saying they know someone in their family that it's happened to. And as more happen, then more people realize it's not just them or rare and that's when the poop is gonna hit the propellor. 397 This is obviously the time period during WW1. The Tsar and his generals fucked up the war against the Germans and ruined the economy. Posted by: Xipe Totec at December 08, 2021 10:42 AM (o2MD2) The communists occupied high positions in the Tsar's government (and so were easily able to cut communications). Tsar Nicholas had a high opinion of some of them (who later became the Mensheviks iirc). All in all, the Tsar comes off as a generally unaware dumbass, but it's fundamentally a coup and not a popular revolt. The relationships between the Reds (who represent the aristocracy) and the Tsar is somewhat complicated. Posted by: Been Lurking, but clearly been posting too at December 08, 2021 *** Vespasian: True, though he did have a sense of humor. The bit about waving a gold coin under the nose of Titus, who had objected to the pay toilets or urine tax as unseemly, and asking, "Does this stink?" later, as emperor, he attended a play in which his corpse sits up in the coffin and asks, "How much is this costing the treasury?" "Fifty thousand sesterces, Sire," says the actor. "Very well," says the corpse. "Make it twenty thousand and toss me in the Tiber." And Vespasian found it hilarious. On his deathbed, he struggled to his feet to die as a soldier/emperor should. Usually emperors were deified after death, and so he murmured, "Dear me, I must be turning into a god," as he died. Your driver shared with us that you weren't wearing a face mask during a recent trip. To help protect everyone's health and safety, riders and drivers are required to wear a mask on every trip when using Uber. Our mask policy follows CDC guidance stating that masks are required when using rideshare, even if you've already received the vaccine. Before your next trip, you'll be asked to verify that you're wearing a mask by taking a photo of yourself wearing one in the app. Riders who receive multiple reports of not wearing a mask will lose access to the app. Sometimes these reports are made if your or another rider's nose was not fully covered or if a mask was removed at any point during the trip. We're reaching out to let you know about the feedback and remind you of our policy. Thank you for doing your part to help keep your driver safe. She just said - and this is a direct quote - "the odds of it actually helping me not get COVID are pretty small because of my other stuff, but I am super happy that I can finally get the vaccine." That's a level of cognitive dissonance I can't really understand. She has a chronic health condition and other drugs that are known to cause problems with or reduce the efficacy of the COVID vaccine but she's still raring to go get it regardless. did you also know that the vaxx that was approved by the FDA is not the same vaxx that's still being given out? It's supposed to be better but they didn't have enough to even do any trials and it would have not have the liability waivers. It's all in the approval docs and says right there the name of the good stuff I cominrty (sp?) but that's not the same as the one that won emergency approval and still being used. They did that to head fake the military and others into making the mandates of their employees cause now with the approval there should be none of the complaints about an untried vaxx. Turns out they're still using it and all they're doing for the kids is using less. Something like 1200 deaths in the first 90 days during the testing period prior to roll out. Thank you very much for posting this painting. My mother, when she was 10, went through Stalin's barbaric forced famine in Ukraine from 1932-1933 {The Holodomor). She rarely spoke of those times but the look in her eyes whenever it was finally mentioned in the West (1980s) brought this haunting glaze over her. She mentioned only once that, indirectly, she saw cannibalism in her small village, but what caught her voice the most was how she tried, but never could, adequately describe the devastating hunger she and her family felt for months on end.. one of her relatives said at the time that no one, no one, will ever believe that this has happened... so the above painting is candid for a scene that takes place in an urban setting (Leningrad, during the siege?), but there is no closeup glimpse of the faces or their eyes or what happened in the villages.. a horse was actually a luxury, if any were to be found due to Stalin's forced collectivization that took everything from poor peasants ... Robert Conquest's book on the Ukrainian famine verbally says it all.. but I have seen a photograph that, if described, could overflow a house with horror and shame... thanks again for posting...
