The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The rule of law is well and truly dead, and while it is easy to blame both sides of the aisle, the Democrats have a particular skill at rooting out the absolute worst of all possible options.

Imagine the catastrophic clusterfvck in the court system if liability for emotional injury caused by words were allowed to be anything more than a punchline! And does anyone doubt that leftist tears would be the reason for the overwhelming majority of those injuries?

'Emotional Injury': Democrats Press To Broaden Liability for Social Media Companies

Democratic witness Rashad Robinson, president of a George Soros-backed advocacy group, called for more restrictions on free speech to combat "misinformation." Robinson’s group, Color of Change, has pushed for defunding the police. Robinson also serves on the Aspen Institute’s Commission on Information Disorder, which called for a "national response strategy" to stop "misinformation" online. In the hearing, Robinson called for Congress to place legislative limits on the First Amendment, saying "I understand that we have these conversations about the First Amendment, but there are limitations to what you can and cannot say."
Hey dummy...there actually aren't any limitations on what one can and can't say in the context of opinion. There are very narrow restrictions on speech, but you aren't talking about those; you are talking about speech with which you disagree. You are talking about political opinions. You are talking about disagreements with the liberal orthodoxy in science and medicine and public health.

The purpose of this is glaringly obvious. It is intended to chill free speech directed at the progressive shibboleths that they are furiously pushing into mainstream thought as fact. This is weaponizing the courts even more to make them a de facto arm of the Democrat party and its progressive shock troops.

Speech is easy when it offends nobody. But the very core of free speech is the absolute defense of speech that offends and disrupts and challenges and irritates and infuriates. It is exactly that difference of opinion that is the hallmark of a free society, and its enshrinement in Western culture is a huge part of our success...politically, scientifically, technologically...

Challenging the status quo is what got us here, to the pinnacle of human thought and accomplishment. Degrading that freedom will send us right back into the calcified and orthodox thinking that has been common through most of human history.

Yes indeed. This is the real reason for the "harmful speech is violence" crap. To control speech, they need to conflate it with violence.

30 The horses have already left the barn. Decades ago, liberals -- and greedy trial lawyers -- drastically expanded the scope of what damages could be sought for "personal injury" claims, including vague bullshit like "emotional duress" and "emotional injury" and a host of phony injuries that meant whatever the plaintiff wanted them to mean, and could not be disproven. Conservatives screamed from the rooftops that this was a terrible idea and would only be the beginning of even crazier and more phony claims and damages. Nobody listened. So here we are. There's no turning back.

It must be weird living in their world. There are two glaring problems with this:
1. The Party/State/Media Complex is what wants eterna-COVID. That does include a lot of Republicans, but they aren't the primary players.

91 The horses have already left the barn.

Which is why anti-monopoly laws exist. The "free market will help keep these impulses in check" presupposes a free market. We don't have one, and haven't had anything even approximating it for a long time. Big Tech is a prime example, where each of the major Silicon Valley players is a monopoly or near-monopoly on their own, and then they actively conspire (e.g., have formed a cartel) to cover the rest of the market or when they need cooperation.

Every big tech firm should be broken up, but thanks to the mutually parasitic government/industry complex all is well for them...

I was served (a few years back) a court order to appear for a restraining order hearing. It was claimed that I was harassing someone that I only communicted to via court documents and my lawyer. Harassment! In the end neither they nor their instigator appeared for the final hearing as it was dismissed, yet in court, documents were filed that said (and had a TRO filed against him).

293 I know it was two threads ago, but I just woke up and need to get this off my chest: IF DARRELL BROOKS WAS TRULY IN NEED OF PSYCH HELP, IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THAT HARD TO GET IT WITH HIS CONSTANT INTERACTIONS WITH "THE SYSTEM." Pooky has homicidal ideations a lot, and we're working on controlling them, but I have to fight to keep him *out* of the psych ward. If Brooks' momma thought he was a danger to others (and he clearly was), she should have not paid his bail. Social workers are easily accessible in rural Iowa, so she'd have an even easier time of finding one just outside of Chicago.

My old company had the single best printing system I have ever used. There was no printer selection. You just printed, and it all queued up in a global (literally) system. You can then walk to any printer on the company network - any printer in any office, anywhere in the world - and tap your badge on the card reader. It matches your ID number and dumps your print queue to the device. Or you can configure it to prompt you for which jobs from your queue you want to print right then.

That system was phenomenally well-designed and worked exceptionally well. It is one of the few examples of truly great software and implementation I have ever seen.

Heh. For federal auditing and compliance purposes, a company where I used to work *had* to print paper logs of all transactions. There was a room off the server room that was just stacked with gigantic IBM line printers clattering away at all times, dumping their tractor-feed green-line paper into big boxes that were hauled away to storage every night.

That room was so loud that there were procedures we had to follow prior to opening the door - like clearing the nearby parts of the server room and signing out hearing protection. It was like a closet full of machine guns spraying away on full-auto.

There was a dedicated "Print Queue" PC in each lab, and you'd have to sign in to it and pick the printer (based on its network name, which you wouldn't have any reason to know) and the jobs from a crappy Visual Basic type interface.

356 My old company had the single best printing system I have ever used.

That's the way ours is now. With one advantage.

It took several weeks for the lethargy, dry cough, and aching lungs to pass for me. I suspect that had I not already been taking extra vitamin C, D, and aspirin leading up to it that it would've really messed me up. I've added B-complex and zinc since then.

365 Grumpy Martha is not a celebrity.

An unfunny, obnoxiously produced, condescending depiction of every broad demeaning stereotype of old people you might imagine. Oversized thick-glass eyeglasses, bob cut unstyled hair, frumpy house dress, snarly old-person face, overly loud talking, hard of hearing, saying "Bah!" every third word. Incapable of understanding the first four letters of the alphabet (as in Part A, B, C and D). I find it pretty distasteful.

368 Regular cons generally have furries come to them and the girls all squeel over them. Which I guess is why they go. I tell 'em, you know they're probably naked under there and all pervy. They don't listen to me. I get the same look when I told girls that George Michael in his blue jeans waving his ass around, might not be waving it around for you. "You're just jealous" they said. Girls make crazy decisions based on looks the same way guys do.

I hate to break it to you, but there are no hot furries.
-------------
Okay, okay, as a fanboy I now have to straighten things out here.
1. Furries are a fandom that really, really like Looney Tunes, old Disney cartoons with Mickey & gang, and the old HB cartoons, and want to live in that anthropomorphic land. As their own original furry character, even.
2. Yiffers (who in my youth were known as "furverts") take the fascination and fandom to the ultimate conclusion. Which is sex in furry suits. Which is weird, but not the absolute worst. Unfortunately the Rainbow Army got into the fandom, and yiffing is now Sacred Perversion or something.
3. The hot chick who has cat ears and tail added to a cute schoolgirl or maid outfit is not a furry. She is an anime cosplayer. Anime catgirls, doggirls, foxgirls, and so forth aren't furry characters. They are representative of hengeyokai the Japanese shape-changing spirits of folklore. Sort of the Addams Family-ification of old terrors into the odd neighbors/harem members.
