Thanksgiving ONT

Happy Thanksgiving Morons!

Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving.jpg

THERE is one day that is ours. There is one day when all we Americans who are not self-made go back to the old home to eat saleratus biscuits and marvel how much nearer to the porch the old pump looks than it used to. Bless the day. President Roosevelt gives it to us. We hear some talk of the Puritans, but don’t just remember who they were. Bet we can lick ‘em, anyhow, if they try to land again. Plymouth Rocks? Well, that sounds more familiar. Lots of us have had to come down to hens since the Turkey Trust got its work in. But somebody in Washington is leaking out advance information to ‘em about these Thanksgiving proclamations.

The big city east of the cranberry bogs has made Thanksgiving Day an institution. The last Thursday in November is the only day in the year on which it recognizes the part of America lying across the ferries. It is the one day that is purely American. Yes, a day of celebration, exclusively American.

O. Henry, Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen

On this day of giving thanks, I think it important to consider gratitude. Gratitude is an oft overlooked virtue. Oh sure, we all say thank you, we are a polite people. We say thank you so much that in many circumstances the phrase has no meaning. But that's not gratitude. Gratitude is the virtue that keeps us grounded. It is the antithesis of ego and the father of humility. Gratitude is turning away from the self and acknowledging the other. It is the ability to recognize that it's not all you. Gratitude is something that all of us need to nurture in ourselves, and teach our children. America promises the blessings of liberty, and the foundation of the blessings of liberty is gratitude. On this day dedicated to gratitude, I urge each and every one of you to take a moment to not only be thankful, but to truly be grateful for the blessings that you've received.

I don't have any links tonight, and of course the comments are open, like all ONTs, but if you want to take a moment to share what you're thankful for, I think we would all like to hear. Personally, I'm thankful that I live in this great country of abundance, that I was able to share today with family and friends, including Hogmartin, Redchief, and Helena Handbasket. I'm thankful for my family, and our health. I'm thankful for the Moron Horde, and most of all I'm thankful for the blessings of the Lord above.

That God for whatever reason chose to include me among the elect so that I'm not too attached to all the awfulness of this world, and while I have mixed feelings of what lies ahead of us, I got to live most of my life in the USA at what may have been it's height in general freedom and comfort. That I have friends and some family that also care about these things, and part of the times we get to live in is the ability to contact each other (here).

100 "President Roosevelt gives it to us."

And there it is, the Progressive carp about gov't giving us things that by right come from God.

FDR didn't *give* you Thanksgiving. He *proclaimed* it. Because it was always there, scattered about, from home to home, church to church, when the crops came in, or a bonus was given at work, or a new line came online at the plant. All FDR did was what every President before had done and recognize that the people ought to be grateful to the Creator of Heaven and Earth, and we should as a nation have a single day to do it together.

No, O, FDR didn't give you nuthin' you didn't already have.

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. When I was in school it was when I came home for a decent meal. It is also bittersweet as my Dad died on Thanksgiving day, 1987, at the VA hospital in Louisville, KY.

I'm also thankful for this place, as I just don't know what I would do without it. Hope everyone has had a good a day as I have. Nitey nite.

115 I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for my health, and my Dad's as well and thankful that I got to enjoy some freedom in my life. Hopefully it can be restored electorally, rather than the hard way.

I feel bad about the Salvation Army story, though. When I was a little kid, a flood swept through the area I lived in. A number of people were killed, and a lot more left destitute. My family was essentially homeless at that point. It took months to get things livable again. All through that, the Salvation Army was there with community food trucks, clothes, you name it. 7-year-old me even got to have a bit of a Christmas that year, thanks to gifts provided by the SA. Since then, I have always given to them every Christmas. Once I was old enough to work, it was always a $100 bill into a pot, at least once or twice per season. More as I advanced in my career.

I'm still grateful to the organization that did so much for my family and community all those years ago, but they are no longer that organization.

And that makes me sad.

124 >>>On this day of giving thanks, I think it important to consider gratitude.

This is annual thread-worthy. Thanks WD and horde.

And! I think I may have finally solved the Mystery of the Inconsistent Tolerance of Baked Goods! My 5yo can eat some baked goods - Mrs. Baird's bread, donuts, pasta, tortillas, Oreos, etc. - but not others, such as croissants, any homemade baked good (cake, cookies, cupcakes), pancakes, etc. If he eats one of the latter foods, he has stomachache, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. He reported itchy throat after eating rolls at lunch and then had stomachache for hours followed by diarrhea. So, I checked the ingredients list to see what's in the rolls that isn't in the sandwich bread he likes.

EGG.

Egg is also in the croissants he can't eat. So, I hope that turns out to be it, because egg is relatively easy to avoid.

(The pasta he eats is the boxed, dried stuff, which doesn't have egg in it. He presumably would not be able to eat fresh-made pasta.)

In fact, the doctor said I was wrong to even suggest the theory. Who's wrong now, motherfucker?) that he was allergic to cow's milk protein. He eventually grew out of that allergy and can now consume dairy without a problem.

He also spent 9 months, from 9 months old to 18 months old, getting every fucking stomach bug there was. I swear, every other week, he spent at least two days vomiting. He gained 2.2 lbs between those ages. (I knew it was bugs because I got them all too. I lost a couple pounds myself.) I legit was not sure this kid would live to grow up.

So, an egg allergy would be par for the course. I'm just glad he has been growing (even if he is still 5th percentile) and is happy and mostly healthy.

The anime series is great. And it's one of the few where the English dub is really worth the listen, if you're not a subtitle reader.

170 I feel bad about the Salvation Army story, though.

It's #8 out of 6554 on Anime News Network, with 12k votes, if you want a few thousand more opinions.

And only one other first run series (Stein's;Gate) outscores it; the other things above it are movies and sequels. Sequels score higher since people who hated the first season probably didn't watch and rate the sequel.

Seriously, I got a wee bit verklempt today. My maternal grandmother's dining room table. We had it restored. 42+ years since it had last seen a family feast. Last big meal was back in '77 or so.

The last time I sat around that table, I was just a little kid. And there it sat since idle. It has been restored, and hosted a feast today, 42+ years later. That table is now in my own home, with family gathered around. The circle is complete.

My maternal grandmother bought that table new in 1919, the year she got married. Last big meal was around '77 or so, maybe '78. It sat in the house, unused, until 2003 or so, when my maternal uncle died. It then went in an old trailer on the farm. Miley came into my life. We restored that table early this year.

It had another feast today. The circle is complete.

186 Anyone ever start reading through some wiki articles and various other news pages and come up with something weird?

Well, I was reading about the statue of Baphomet that the Church of Satan has been dragging around to state houses. I noticed it had a caduceus on it...so why does a statue of the devil have a medical symbol on it?

Ok, here's where it gets weird...because the Satanists have it right and the medicos have it wrong. The caduceus is NOT related to medicine. It comes from a staff associated with Hermes that...lets you change your sex (paging Dr Adm Levine) and is associated with commerce (because the ancient greeks were odd).

The medical symbol is supposed to be the somewhat similiar Rod of Asclepius which in greek legend is associated with medicine and healing.

But...apparently because the US government screwed up the two symbols a century ago the caduceus is more commonly used in the US then the Rod of Asclepius...and I guess the weird french guy that designed Bahpomet did his research.

Still Greek dude spies to entwined snakes and strikes at them, bingo he becomes a she. For the next seven years. So when she spots the entwined snakes again, again strikes at them and becomes male once more.

Then it gets more weird.

So one day Zeus and Hera are as usual arguing and it gets to which gender has it better when it comes to sex. So they go and ask Tiresias since he has experienced both sides. He says men do so Hera gets pissed and strikes him blind. Zeus can't undo the curse so gives Tiresias the ability of foretelling the future.

Mind blown! 1621 the Pilgrims and the Natives were friends.

Squanto had been enslaved by a waring tribe and sold to Spaniards. He was shipped to Spain where monks bought him/ his freedom. He was in Spain for a time, baptized. The monks then arranged for him to go to England then back to the Americas. When he finally returned home, his village was gone and he joined the Wampanoag (sp?) tribe. When he saw the Pilgrims, he recognized them as Christians and knew they were friends.

God be praised!! All things work together for good.

I am thankful for my family. I just had a wonderful TG with family. Weather was wonderful so we could have a lovely outdoor celebration (for those that were uncomfortable). But we had a great time, great food. We will never be locked down again! I made a pact with my cousin, never again. My heart is full of love for my family. 230 I'm thankful that so far Dopey Joe has only managed to make food expensive, not non-existent.

I'm thankful for the visitors who came today, and also thankful that they've now gone home, leaving me to eat my first post-Thanksgiving Turkey and Tillamook sammich in peace.

I'm thankful that the only surviving member of the family senior to me was finally able to get a bed while she does her chemo and radiation. While I love her dearly, having her sleeping on my couch and me having to haul her to the bathroom, not to mention hauling her up and down the stairs to get to appointments, etc. was taking a toll on both of us ('cuz being 29 now, I ain't exactly in the shape I was in when I was 22, yo).

Fortunately the COVID rate has gone down some here, and the hospitals and care facilities are no longer jammed full of the anti-vax whackjobs who oddly seemed to be the first ones to run to the ER when they got COVID.

I sent a similar admonishing note to investor relations letting them know that I don't mind spending ca. $1200 at one of their competitors for tires if they keep pushing this garbage and don't focus on their core mission, which is tires. You're only as old as you think you are.

Mind over matter.

https://tinyurl.com/2p82ebr4

The University of Michigan ran a study on the impacts of self-perception and aging and found a direct correlation between negative self___ and poor health. Couples who tend to view their aging negatively tend to become less healthy and less mobile than couples who view their aging positively. The amazing thing is that another study found that as people aged, their explicit bias toward older people, how they vocalized how they felt about fellow older adults, improved as they aged. But their implicit bias, how they felt internally about fellow seniors, became more negative as they aged. So, based on this study, the old "you're only as old as you feel" adage seems pretty true.

380 Being thankful takes no effort, takes no time, means very little, even saying 'Thanks' has lost most of it's meaning...
Gratitude however? Is thankfulness with work boots on, it's an active, action, attitude, thing.
DOING something that shows you are "Thankful",
in fact soooo full you have to let some of it out, sweat some of it off.
That is where the "Giving" part comes in, having as constant as possible an Attitude of Gratitude, ever willing to GIVE exactly that which you are Thankful for having received, be it time, money, hope, council, comfort...or Blood. Or all of them.

Unlike you I haven't yet graduated to infusing cigars at home, but sort of a similar endeavor, I'm re-charging Boveda humidification packs. I think it's working. Means I shouldn't have to buy any again. Small little cost savings, but it's the challenge and principle ....
