Top Story

  • Slashdot linked to an Axios (spit) story bewailing the failure of the US Senate to approve the nomination of a communist to head up the country's banking regulations. Not ever mentioning that she's a communist.

A certain someone pointed out that she's a communist.

And got voted up +5 Insightful.

  • Speaking of communists, China has suspended Tencent from updating existing apps or launching new ones. (South China Morning Post)

Tencent is a holding company for a huge range of investments in both Chinese and foreign businesses - like Engulf and Devour, their motto is Our fingers are in everything. They run WeChat, which has 1.2 billion users, and own 20% of Universal Music, and a huge list of other stuff.

They were one of the most valuable corporations in Asia at the start of the year, close to the trillion dollar mark, before Chairman Xi knifed the economy in the front.

And now they are not permitted to fix bugs in their apps. I'm sure this will work out just fine for everyone.

  • Speaking of communists and tech companies getting banned, miracle of miracles the Department of Commerce has actually been doing its job. (The Register)

Another 27 companies from China and Pakistan have been banned from doing business with the US - including one that has the exclusive distribution rights for HP servers in China.

Party Like It's 1979 Video of the Day

This one confused me - I knew in my heart it was a 70s song, but it didn't show on the charts I was looking at.

Because it charted in Australia way back in '76 but not in the US until '81.

4 Big talk from a country whose newest prime minister didn't last a full day before resigning.

Lol. Yeah, she didn't even make it to the 8 hour mark; hell, she hadn't even been officially sworn in yet. I wonder, did she get 81 million votes?

In other disturbing news, the Salvation Army has gone woke. CRT woke. You still have plenty of time to ignore their kettles.

What was founded in 1865 in London, England, as both a protestant Christian church and an international charitable organization, the Salvation Army has now embraced Critical Race Theory.

20 1979 -- The Year Of No Damn Raises

Late in 1978, as inflation approached a double-digit rate and the public urgently demanded that the government 'do something' to slow the decline in the purchasing power of money, the Carter administration brought forth its wage-price guidelines.

A 'voluntary' wage freeze for a year. While inflation raged. Fun times.

Bon Scott playing the bagpipes, "It's a long way to the top, if you want to rock n' roll".

https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=nULs4JW3tPI

He really learned how to play the bagpipes. He actually played them live a time or two. Later on, they just used a tape. Scott laid down the pipes on stage, and fans destroyed them. They didn't get a new set.

The story is Bon bought them, and paid some ridiculous overprice for them, and they weren't going to do that again.

40 Thanks again, Publius. I am going to pull the oven again and recheck the plug/cord wiring, terminal block, and make inspections for any obvious signs of shorting, overheated wires. Reviewing some youtube vids and various forum threads, I am also going to check the bake elements for proper resistance and ground isolation, while I am back there. Another piece of info is that the pre-heat seems to take an abnormally long time (outside of the breaker trip/reset), which points to bake element deterioration. I'll also reseat the breaker and inspect to see if it is warmer than it should be during use (I don't believe it is from existing troubleshooting).

I have another 40A circuit in the same panel, 6 feet away for the wall oven/microwave (not yet installed). So my troubleshooting options are pretty well open at this point. I may swap in a non-GFCI breaker (I don't believe code requires it), rather than running it ungrounded, to establish whether the tripping is a ground fault.

Thanks to ace, the cobs and open bloggers. And to all our friends in the gray boxes.

I think 2021 is more similar to 1977. After all, we have 38 more months of this failure theater. Carter was inept. The Biden junta is evil. IF we make it to January 2023 1) the GOP, as we know it, will do little to turn the tide - 2) we may be too far gone.

In spite of the politics, have a great day everyone.

"Most people think of the holidays as a time to enjoy a good meal with loved ones. But for many people, holiday food can trigger intense anxiety."

Shut up. Go away. Leave decent, normal people alone to enjoy good food and companionship. You've had nearly two years for fear mongering. It's over. Nobody should listen to you any more.

116 800,000 controlled and directed votes would sway most NYC elections. Why would we allow this to happen to our nation's largest and greatest metropolis? Imagine a conservative government in a place like, say Atlanta that said they were going to let a bunch of white guys in southern Gerogia who identified as Braves fans vote in Atlanta elections? Both are satires. This is not a serious country anymore.

119 "The Tandy / Radio Shack Color Computer 2 was my first computer back in '84."

Pixy! I always thought you were a kid. Turns out you're an old fart, like me, another one who remembers life before the Internet.

BTW, did the Tandy run the 6502? And do you remember the Coherent OS?

Posted by: Nemo at November 25, 2021 12:07 PM (S6ArX)

120 The Color Computer had a 6809E in it, the 6809E being distinguished from the 6809 by, um, it was something to do with the clock. The technical books I have are on the bookshelves on the other side of the table and I can't be asked to get up and look in them.

I got one of the last of the "gray case" coco 1's that had 64k of RAM in them. The original color computers had 32k, but the chips were all 64k chips, 4164's IIRC, and they just took ones that were half bad. Toward the end of the production run of the color computer 1's, they couldn't get half-bad RAM chips, so they just used fully working ones. It meant I could run OS-9 on mine.

My first computer was a TI-99, my second computer and the first computer I bought myself, was the CoCo.

122 The E in 6809E meant that it used an external clock.
It ran at 1 MHz. The 68B09 and 68B09E ran at 2 MHz.
My favorite cpu for assembler. It was a Motorola product unlike the 6502 made by a bunch of guys who left Motorola to do their own thing.
