The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Our military is rapidly devolving into a European-style pseudo-tough armed force that is more interested in post-modern lunacy than actually learning how to fight and win wars. No matter what obfuscation emerges from the slimy maws of the current leaders of our military, our readiness is pathetic, our focus is on everything other than fighting, and our enemies are happy with the trends.

War is by definition unfair. Battles are won when the conditions are not equal, and it is incumbent on our leaders to create those conditions. which means the best men to take up arms, no matter their proclivities or opinions on homosexual marriage and gender and power structures in America. That Critical Race Theory and gender "equity" has overwhelmed training to kill our enemies is a symptom, not the cause.

The cause is the Long March, and that began probably with Woodrow Wilson's disastrous presidency. Progressivism and racism..what a combination!

The goal is to destroy America and American Exceptionalism from within, by carefully manipulating the vision of America that is taught to our leaders. No longer are they taught the glories of American history. No...they are taught that we are irredeemably evil, with systemic racism and a traditional patriarchy that pummels women into submission.

Can the US Navy fight and win a war?

The devastating fire in the USS Bonhomme Richard and the subsequent scathing investigation report again raise profound questions about naval competence. If the Navy is not prepared to fight a fire in a major warship, is it fit to fight a major war? Many will reject that comparison as this was only one of some 290 combatants. Yet, that possibility should not be rejected without further examination.

The Readiness Review, conducted for Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer after the 2017 collisions, and his cyber study were searing critiques. The first identified cultural problems, many that still have not been corrected. The second concluded that China posed “an existential threat” to the Navy and Marines. So, what has happened since?

[Emphasis mine] The answer is simple: It has gotten much, much worse.

Navies win battles by killing people and breaking things, and the best way to do that is to have the best men and train them to do exactly that. Every second spent on other things degrades the effectiveness of the fighting force. But the progressive plan is brilliant, because the argument that the armed forces should reflect the country as a whole seems, on its face, to make some sense.

Of course it doesn't make any sense at all. Women and transsexuals and non-binary...things...don't make great and ferocious soldiers and sailors and airmen and marines. They make our armed forces a miasma of conflicting priorities and confused goals. The example of the Bonhomme Richard is a good one: Ask any U.S. Navy veteran about what they trained for onboard ship, and fighting fires and damage control consumed much of their time. But when we shift to CRT and gender sensitivity and all the other crap that has infected our armed forces from the outside, we get a navy that cannot do its job!

21 Again: This is a feature, not a bug. Indeed, it may be the prime directive of the new, leftist junta that now runs what used to be the the USA. (And don't kid yourself. They run the former USA. We handed the country to them on a silver platter with a side of arugula. There is no going back short of full-out civil war. And it won't be fought with prop guns.) These leftist pricks WANT to see our military weak and incompetent. They WANT to see the country defeated and dejected. They are not Americans and don't want to be. They are a Fifth Column wearing the USA as a skin suit. We must learn to understand and accept this. Boys, avenge me. Avenge me!

28 This is another symptom of the creeping Marxism disguised as PC, Woke, LGBTQupdownleftright and so on. Remember during the Cold War, the Commies didn't care how many people got killed or how much gear broke down or was otherwise inoperable. As long as they had the right spirit and could spout the right Commie slogans on demand, it was cool. And if they were Party members, so much the better. No, I can see what's happening. But OTOH, in the present situation we might not have to worry about the Navy so much when Civil War 2.0 goes down.

37 Rule number one aboard a ship is you keep everyone as busy as possible even if its make work bullcrap just to keep them out of trouble or being bored. Chipping and scouring every single flake of rust all day long and repainting is one of the easiest ways to do that. Swabbing decks, picking up trash, etc. Keep them busy or they will get into trouble.

39 There are two places you really don't want to have a fire of any kind--on board a ship or on board a plane.

EVERY member of EVERY crew should be well-trained on how to handle fires. Even the lowly deckhand on a superyacht is trained on what to do in case of a fire. That's pretty much the basic requirement before ever joining a crew.

Idiots.

40 Better sooner than later? Maybe some Chinese general should light off this battle sooner, rather than later, so that our rust is less-widespread and there are still some he/him pronouns in the military. Waiting helps them get stronger and merely weakens us further.

41 Loss of perceived naval competence and power will be worse than most imagine. The existential basis of American power and the backstop behind our treaties since the Great White Fleet has been naval power, and this is particularly true in the postwar era.

Think shipping is having trouble now? Wait until the US Navy is no longer perceived as able to guarantee safe passage to all comers for trade.

47 The rusting Navy ships has been an issue for several years. Part of the problem is the prolonged time at sea while other vessels that would normally rotate are held up in port while a refit that used to take 6 months now takes 2 years.

And, of course the obscene focus on race, trannies and being green isn't helping. There's a lot of rot in the military today and it's not just confined to rust on warships.

59 The US Navy was destroyed when two things coincided.

First was the destruction of the traditions of being a sailor. Sailors are something special. Mother Nature and Neptune are ALWAYS trying to kill you... sure, they will lull you into complacency with Clear skies and following seas... and then bamm... welcome to the HER icane. These Men lived a life apart... gone for months or years at a time... and so created a society and lifestyle that worked... they had their own traditions and culture. Part of that culture WAS becoming their own group... and they did this with ceremony and tradition. Shellback. Bluenose. Order of the Golden Dragon. These traditions put you into the Brotherhood of sailors. The US Navy destroyed those traditions...

78 26 "The devastating fire in the USS Bonhomme Richard and the subsequent scathing investigation report again raise profound questions about naval competence. If the Navy is not prepared to fight a fire in a major warship, is it fit to fight a major war? Many will reject that comparison as this was only one of some 290 combatants. Yet, that possibility should not be rejected without further examination. "

Not only that, but that ship was tied up pier side with the fire fighting facilities of an entire Navy base at it's disposal. If that fire had happened at sea the minnow would have been lost.

Oh, and not only that, but the Bonhomme Richard fire was set by an arsonist, Ryan Sawyer Mays, who hasn't even been put on trial yet. While the criticism rightly falls on the crew that couldn't put out the fire, you hardly hear anything about the fact that it was deliberately set, and we know nothing about the motive.

Then add in the destruction of the crusty Chief Petty Officer. That stereotype was there FOR A REASON. Every old Sailing Ship had a Boatswain. Someone who kept order in the crew... one that no one would cross. He was there to keep order WHEN, INEVITABLY, the shit hit the fan. Junior Officers were often scared... and Senior Officer knew enough to LISTEN because they often had the most experience of anyone on the ship.

Now? The myth of the crusty Chief is gone... because the new Chief is kinder, and gentler, and can't cuss anymore. With that came a degradation of his effectiveness at those times when a REALLY experienced person is needed in a crises. America has always been alone. The closest we've come to having true allies in the past 75 years is for a couple of months after 9/11, and frankly the help we received from our allies was virtually all a bunch of stuff that we could have done ourselves.

Our allies are a bunch of remoras, who get pissed off when the shark changes direction without their permission.

Keep in the mind that the kid who got "blown away" by the witch didn't harm or even threaten harm to the dude in a dress. All he did was use words to mock the dude in a dress. Starting almost 20 years ago, madison avenue shifted towards focusing on "lifestyle" as part of their campaigns. So we'd get shots of the guy not just driving the car, but him waking up, having an espresso, long shots of the interior of his house, then walking outside and climbing in.

Somehow, that's turned into this myopic view of a particular group of people, who may or may not be interested in your product. The product has become secondary in so many ads it's ridiculous. I really would love to see just how the agencies are acting, and who is driving what. There was a time where you'd tell your client - "this ain't gonna sell your stuff, we think this is the wrong approach". I'm guessing there's agencies out there now that make not selling your product their schtick.

It was for a reason. all of us that made Chief on the base bonded like brothers and sisters and helped each other out in weak areas and learned new skill sets as initiation went on. The night before and the day of us putting on khaki were meant to humiliate us and teach us at the same time. You had to be able to stand up for the sailors in the face of abusive and irate officers and keep a straight face while doing it.

145 Knew many admirable women there - but to this day would like to have seen a real discussion/debate on 'is the admission of women to the service academies a NET benefit to the United States?'.

This is absolutely needed. We've had women in uniform for over 70 years now. We've had women in combat and training and housing along side men for 30 years.

Lets look hard and close at how well this has worked out. Are we better for it? Is the military better and more effective? Is this a net positive for the actual purpose and mission of our armed forces?

My bias says "probably not" but I'd really like to find out. But that is a question One Must Not Ask.

149 Good morning.
I have a serious problem.
Today the indoor mask mandate in Montgomery County, the last county in MD to have one, was lifted. There are less than 50 cases per 100,000 in a population of 1.2 million. For all intents and purposes, the pandemic is over. Your chance of coming in contact with a "case" is .00005( I think my math is correct).
Yet my condo association has somehow decided( who exactly I am not sure about) has decided that in order for myself and friends and family to access my condo without a mask, they need to provide a vaccine card or wear a mask. His also includes anyone I hire to do work on my unit as well. This memo arrived last night hours before the mandate ended without any consultation from the people who live here.

Exactly. The ads have gotten so "sell a lifestyle" that they don't even care about the product. Does it work? I'm highly skeptical. But it makes ad companies a lot of money.

There really needs to be a huge, long study of how well advertising actually works and how necessary it really is. Especially in modern "skip the ad" culture. We aren't in the 1970s when people had to sit through your crappy coffee ad.

But in a different role I saw the infection setting in during the end of the first dot com boom. The industry always looked to the younger people coming in for what was "hip and new", but never gave them the keys to the car. Now they've got the keys to the car and the liquor cabinet.

I always roll my eyes at the TV commercials with the celebrity spokespeople. Last one I saw was for something where the female celebrity claimed "we have been doing this with [our product] for generations. This is who we are." Right. "We". When the celebrity has no idea about anything to do with the product or the company is now saying "we" as if she has been a part of the company since its founding or something.

I can't remember what this commercial was or who it was, but another example that comes to mind is Mila Kunis with Jim Beam. She became an "ambassador" in 2014, yet she was doing commercials talking as if she had been some key part of the company for decades.

Given declining TV viewership in general, I can't believe there hasn't already been a sea change.
I saw something yesterday that the World Series Game 1 had 11 million viewers. 40 years ago, when the population was about 100 million fewer, it had over 30 million viewers. Advertising should be dying, or dirt cheap.

"And I'm sorry, guys, but any parent who thinks their 17-year-old school's assignment is too explicit, they need to check out his browser history, because trust me, he can handle it. It this shows you that the real dangerous ideology in society isn't conservatism or liberalism. It's helicopter parenting. An AP is basically a college course. How long will this lady be trying to protect her kid?" --Trevor Noah

Look, Trevor, I know you're just desperate to defend schools and perverts from the evil right wing, and you're not from around here, but... you're full of crap.

Whether kids are going online and browsing porn all day long or not, this kind of stuff does not belong in school books. Its not proper to put images of boys doing blowjobs in textbooks, no matter what is out in the world. Its grooming, for one thing. Its explicit and pornography targeted at underage people using underage images for another.

And if kids are already super aware of all this why the hell does a school need to teach them about it??

276 Another advertising/celebrity spokesperson example is Matthew McConaughey for Lincoln automobiles. I like McConaughey as an actor, but do companies really think people make decisions on things like car purchases based on a celebrity commercial?

It is actually quite effective. Images can act identically to trigger words by simply putting these sights and sounds before your mark, you can manipulate their emotional associations. Its yet another form of Neuro-linguistic Programming.

Well, being a spokesperson for things you actually use is one thing. Claiming the royal "we" when hawking cars or alcohol is a bit different.

Michael Jordan can sell me on a certain shoe for basketball and Tiger Woods can sell me on a certain golf club. But if either of them try to sell me a car or hard liquor, claiming they've been a part of the Ford family or Jim Beam family since the founding and know the products... hard pass.

There's a long-format commercial for the new 1964 Chevrolets on YouTube. Liz Montgomery and Agnes Moorehead, Robert Vaughn, and the lead actors from Bonanza all hawked one or more of the models that year. Chevy sponsored all 3 shows, I think, even though they were different networks, and the cars were used in Bewitched and U.N.C.L.E. for sure. I wonder if that pumped up Impala and Corvair sales.

Partially true. The vast amount of people today did not live thru Carter's inflation and gas lines.

People have a short memory and filling your tank 12 months ago for $35 and now $50, going shopping last Christmas Eve and getting 90 % of what you went there for and a reasonably cost Thanksgiving dinner 12 months ago is a very real memory.

Sure, Netflix is on and my Gummint check hit my EBT card. But, I don't have any money left for domino's and some bud. And my ____ (toy, visa gift card from mom, whatever) is less/smaller than last year. Supposedly the height of the Karen Pandemic.

All I'm saying is there will be less of everything in the next 6-12 months and a very linear line will be drawn mentally by all people. The "expect less" babble by journalists merely re-enforces the meme.

A number of pros used Nike equipment. It was the lack of retail sales to hackers which caused their golf business to fold. Their game improvement equipment sucked compared to their competitors and the scratch handicappers preferred other brands as well.

344 Good one, CBD. Thanks.
I was struck by this, which is a nice simple summary and an excellent takeaway:

"War is by definition unfair. Battles are won when the conditions are not equal"

346 Someone should ask Trevor to fix South Africa before he starts trashing another country that he's not even a citizen of.

Yeah that's what gets me about Trevor Noah. His stand up was pretty funny but it had a fatal flaw. Take his best bit, napkins and tacos. The entire premise is based on him being from South Africa, where "napkin" means "diaper" and being told he'll need plenty of napkins if he eats a taco because they are so messy. OK that's funny stuff.

The problem is he approaches it this way: Everyone around the world except America considers a Napkin (nappy) to be a diaper. How weird Americans are.

Now, this is barely tolerable an approach in America to begin with but it might have been less ridiculous if he'd been from Germany or England or something. He's from freaking South Africa one of the worst crapholes in the world. Lecturing people on how they should label things???

And good comedy comes from the position of "look at how ridiculous I am" not "you suck and should change". He should have done the bit with "I was so dumb I didn't know what napkin meant". The fact that he chose the other approach says a ton about him and his attitude.

347 Truck Monkey, I lived in Ma before moving here so you would think I would be used to the nonsensical ideas of these liberal no nothings, but I owned a single family home on acreage in the burbs and married so could avoid it all.
Now a widow with kids and grandkids in DC living in a condo with neighbors, I feel trapped.
The only saving grace is a group of horde members with whom I get to hang out with at the range every other Sunday , the MoMes and this place.

351 I am absolutely sure that the new US Army composed of mostly Wammen, Troons, Soy Boy SJWs, and sassy black mammies will continue this great history of exceptional-ism. I am also sure that recent disaster that claimed the USS Bonhomme Richard had absolutely nothing to do with these same people being in charge of a billion dollar ship and letting it be destroyed through gross negligence and utter incompetence. Remember the bad Don't Ask/Don't Tell was a sin. This is the new Don't Ask/Don't Tell and is required to preserve equality. You are a racist and a bigot otherwise and no True Conservative can ever condone that.
