No Just Kidding, He Wants to Be Applauded for Ghosting His Job During a Crisis.
Pete Bootyjudge is freshly back at work after his secret two month paternity leave, and he's assigned himself a higher-level priority than unsnarling the shipping crisis: advocating for paid parental leave and attacking Tucker Carlson.
I want to stress that this was a secret paternity leave: he did not tell the public he was taking two months off from his job as Transportation Secretary during a transportation crisis.Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is aiming to use the fierce criticism he faced from conservatives over taking paternity leave as a way to have a conversation about the issue, amid efforts from the White House to get paid family leave into a social spending bill pending in Congress. "The negativity was unfortunate but, in a way, maybe some good comes out of it too because it's helped us have a conversation about parental leave," Buttigieg said this week.Any way we might have a conversation about the shipping crisis? Or about government officials not taking time off during a crisis which they have direct authority over?

Buttigieg took shots for taking paternity leave during the supply chain crisis from Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who criticized his absence from work. ... Buttigieg, the first openly gay Cabinet official in U.S. history, and his husband announced the birth of twins Penelope Rose and Joseph August. Buttigieg reportedly started his leave in mid-August.
Carlson's high-profile criticism drew attention to Buttigeig and the larger issue of paternity leave, something the Transportation secretary went on to discuss during a series of appearances. During an interview Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Buttigeig said that "paid family leave is important" and noted that "it's not a vacation." Separately, on CNN's "State of the Union," he said it’s work that "every American ought to be able to do" when they have a new child. He has stressed that paid leave is still work when asked on ABC's "The View" how to shed the stigma around paternity leave. ... He also said that parents need to be supported when they take leave, regardless of gender.Isn't that convenient? The guy who blew off work for at least two months wants to reduce the stigma of blowing off work for at least two months, and demand that people "support" him. Simple question: Why was this secret? If he wanted to "reduce the stigma" of blowing off work during a crisis, why didn't he inform the press and the public he was doing so? Why did he pretend to be at work when in fact he was on Secret Leave? The answer is obvious: because no person in a position of serious responsibility, who is serious about undertaking that responsibility, blows off his job during a crisis. Especially when the other one of the kids' Two Gay Dads is available to take care of them.
Bootyjudge made two proclamations: First, that supply issues are not his fault, but due to The Regime's all-purpose excuse, the pandemic. And he offered The Regime's all-purpose panacea: the shipping crisis will end... when we're all vaccinated.
He later added, "Look, the bottom line is that everything we're experiencing right now, from issues impacting the supply chain, to issues impacting the ability to travel right now, they're all driven by a pandemic that we need to put behind us. The pandemic ends when we get everybody vaccinated. It is our best tool to get that done, and it's one of the reasons why these vaccine requirements are so important and they work."So we have to get everyone in America vaccinated to end the shipping crisis? No, he's not saying that. He's saying we have to get everyone in the world vaccinated before he can do his actual job.
On Wednesday's broadcast of CNBC's "Squawk Box," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said there are supply issues “that will persist as long as this pandemic continues," and that includes "things happening around the world. I mean, if a shoe factory closes in Vietnam in September for a COVID outbreak, you're going to see the effect of that at the mall in December or January."
Meanwhile, cargo companies warn that vaccine mandates -- and the inevitable loss of workers during a critical time these mandates will cause -- will deepen the crisis.
A trade association representing all of the major cargo companies in the United States is warning that if Joe Biden actively purses more vaccine mandates, it could further disrupt an already-weakened supply chain, according to Politico. Stephen Alterman, president of the Cargo Airline Association (CAA) sent a letter to the Biden Administration expressing concern over an upcoming December 8th deadline. "We have significant concerns with the employer mandates announced on September 9th, 2021," Alterman said, "and the ability of industry members to implement the required employee vaccinations by December 8th, 2021."The firings will occur just weeks before Christmas. Brilliant.

I think Newsom is a bad executive who doesn't really understand the unintended consequences of the policies that he signs into law. I think he's more concerned with looking good to his constituents of virtue signaling rich white people than actually governing.
I think Newsom would rather see the ports working, but he simply has no idea how to navigate the byzantine labyrinth California has set up around the issue. So, he does nothing but fall back on what he knows: virtue signalling.

2. This is strange to me. Any adult who ever accomplished anything in their career understands that there are times when you have to sacrifice your home life - getting a degree, an apprenticeship, a new job, a big assignment,.... Sure, this does not apply to someone who eeks through HS and a local college 5 year plan, and then takes a job for the state, but taking a cabinet level job and ghosting is going to piss off a lot of people. If he was not able to perform he should not have taken the job.
3. My understanding is that a lot of the supply problems are due to logisitics and too many empties stuffed into all the yards making it hard to move the full ones. This is easy to fix but needs top-level direction,....

That's a bit aggressive. The way the EO is written is apparently "must be demonstrated fully vaccinated by December 8." So let's do some math (sorry in advance). So you have to get your second shot by November 24th to be "fully vaccinated" in time for the December 8th deadline. You have to get your first shot No later than November 3rd for or October 27 (day after tomorrow), respectively. With companies telling their employees about this late last week or early this week, they are giving them between 3 and 10 days to decide what they want to do and to get exemptions lined up.
I suspect companies have been waiting on this for two reasons. First is to make sure the lawyers have everything ready to go. The other is to leave timetables so tight that they force employees to jump in rather than risk an exemption being denied.

It is brilliant if you understand what they're actually doing with all of this.
They're trying to provoke a civil war on specific terms. Using the jab as leverage has a limited life span so they're running with this while they can - there will come a point where they can't keep a lid on the side effects anymore, at which point it won't be sufficiently divisive in the manner it's intended to be.
Remember, the jab is SUPPOSED to divide people in very specific ratios. They need just the right sized minority resisting it and both sides to be really worked up about it - (1) so that the minority either lashes out, or can be false-flagged into being seen as lashing out, (2) so that when this happens the minority they get a blank check to crush is big enough to matter, and (3) so that the opposing majority supports the crushing with a blank check long enough to get enough of it accomplished.
A lot of you seem to think they're bumbling through the larger aspects of this. They're not, and many of the "failures" at the micro level are intended.

No, the rest of the show drags down the ending. The last episode is the one written by King and honestly...it's the best of the whole bunch. It works as a stand-alone story in the Stand Universe....though it's a bad last episode.
This version of the Stand was butchered in the editing room, almost laughably so. Performances are mostly worse too.
Watch the last episode and then go watch the mini-series with Gary Sinise.

My first long-term job had me doing the paperwork that the previous employee stuck in a box and hid in a closet. He took every advantage from banked overtime to sick leave for elective surgeries; he was the reason his dept had to use a punch-clock and the others didn't.
My current employer has a sick bank for when employees' regular medical leave runs out; e.g. cancer treatment/recovery. We all put a day, sometimes two, in the kitty. Five years later, we changed it because too many young women were hiring in, using up the sick bank for pregnancy, and then quitting. Nothing like being a long-term employee who loses 3-4 sick days a year because the "bank" ran dry!

I just spent the last hour on the phone trying to hunt down a couple of front tractor tires (10.00-16 F-2s). Finally found a guy who could get a pair in tomorrow morning. He had a few in a warehouse somewhere.
He and the others previously I talked to, who couldn't get any in any time before Christmas all pronounced that the country is fucked. Everything is fucked up and they can't half the shit they need to get.

The practical problem with this is that there is a desperate need to subsidize productive people having kids. If you axe mandatory maternity leave you need to cough up suitable tax credits and subsidies to offset, but you have to be serious about it. Obviously our leadership is not only not serious about it, they're actively hostile to it.
We need to get back to a point where we're paying people who aren't useless to have and raise kids that aren't useless, in proper numbers to sustain our civilization and society. Because if you don't, those are going to evaporate.
We don't get "temps", we staff at a suitable level to account for people having families.

In fairness, it's not clear there's much purpose to the Border Patrol any longer, so maybe thousands quitting/being fired (I doubt it will be that many) is no biggie.
Sure, "migrants" will starve and be murdered and abused in much greater numbers in more remote border areas. On the other hand, if the full erasure of any effective border or immigration requirements can be resurrected/"fortified" at established entry points, will be harder to get customers for the remote crossings - and the profit on people channeled through established ports of entry is higher. So, cartels should do fine.
But even a $ of funding for ICE or BP at this point is a hard sell, if one is serious.

Same here with Federal Civil Service. FMLA gives an employee 12 weeks of unpaid vacation if they qualify but the catch is we can't hire anyone to fill that job while that person is gone. Everyone else has to man up and take on extra work while that person is gone. At one point I had 166 GS employees working for me and at least 9-10 were constantly out on sick leave or FMLA at the same time. We were constantly operating at 10% under strength. Frustrating.

I figure they've got a little under 10 years to execute before Venezuela-like conditions start to seriously hamper the federal government's ability to put down a consequent revolt. My guess is that it has to do with the fact that there are lots of black children available for adoption, and that lesbian couples are more likely to have connections to bypass the hostility and red tape that other couples normally face when trying to adopt.

CARB eliminates all trucks older than 2011 by the 2022, further incentivizing Owner/Operators to leave the state, because the new trucks with the new emmissions controls are expensive to own and operate; they breakdown often and the replacement parts/chips are on the containers that can't be delivered.
STAB Mandate will further eliminate available truckers and dock workers.
